Thank you for explaining why EV tires wear out faster. How long did it take to change each tire? What did it cost to invest in all the tools to change your tires?

You’re welcome. The tools were $160 and it took me about 1.5 hours per tire. Now that I’m a bit practiced, likely 1 hr per tire next time.

Man do whatever you want with your vehicle but don’t suggest people to buy cheap tires and not balance them on a Tesla? Where there is no engine noise, it might not bother you. But coming from someone that works on vehicles not everyone wants to hear not even a little bit of tire noise or road noise. Your tires are not balanced. It cost 20$ to balance a wheel….

People are free to do whatever they want.
It wouldn’t make an interesting or thought provoking video if I bought name brand tires and had them installed at a reputable tire shop…snore fest 🤣

@@TheLawnEngineer Didn't you use that balancing tool you bought recently? I think that was when we first saw you cutting the tire in half and getting all that experience in taking them off and putting them back on. Without looking it up, I am drawing a blank as to why you were doing the tire removals during that episode. Maybe it was about replacing tires on a different vehicle?

Yes, I used a static balancer. What the commenter was referring to is dynamic balancing. Dynamic balancing is generally better but static balancing was the standard for decades before technology enabled dynamic balancing. Balance specifications are a deep topic but it’s not fair to say the tires aren’t balanced.
I split the tire change into two videos. One was just about the change and the tools used, this video was about tires for a Tesla.

What's the efficiency with these tires? My guess is that it's worse than the stock Continentals but by how much? If it's worse, then is it worth the savings at the costs of efficiency and noise level from these economy tires?

Unfortunately, there is no current standard to compare tire efficiency or rolling resistance. There is a proposal out there to include on all new tires but it’s not in place yet.
I have not noticed a range decrease with these tires. My average monthly charging cost is sitting at $25. It would have to be a significant increase in rolling resistance to overcome the cost difference.
Also, the only noticeable rolling resistance is mostly based on tread pattern and how much boundary layer air gets carried around the tires. Deeper more aggressive treads are worse than all season tires. They play around with rubber mixes but that is a small lever compared to tread.

What effect did the new tires have on your range? I have to think the cheaper tires have a higher rolling resistance...

      @TheLawnEngineer  6 місяців тому

I’ve tried to see a difference but there are so many variables.
Rolling resistance will definitely affect range. I’ve seen discussion about developing a test standard so tires can be easily compared but that’s probably a ways off.
In the real world im not sure you will notice much of a difference if you stay away from more aggressive tread designs. I’ve heard that All-terrain tires and winter tires give a noticeable reduction in range.

I have a 2021 AWD Y and it's got 36,000 mi on the tires. I rotated my tires once myself, easy to do. I drove nuts also but not insane... My tire ware is same on all 4 tires.. ( your so wrong about time waiting for rotation, but invested a ton of $ and a hell more time then having a shop to do it).... All I bought was a torque wrench ...If your car was in an accident I think the insurance company would decline your clam after you took a saw to the tire on the rim....This did not go well for you.. But love your raised beds and trailer hitch. Ill give you a few more looks

Rotation does even the wear out across all four tires. However, the case is not closed on your tires vs my tires lasting longer. I only replaced the rear tires, the front are still in great condition. To truly compare, we need to see how long my front last and then average the life. If the front last 60,000 miles and the rear 20,000 it's an average of 40,000 miles for the four.
I agree with the tires/rims and cutting if I hit the rims with the saw or grinder but I was careful and did not.

You get what you pay for...when it rains or snows you're going to regret cheap tires.

For most things in life, you get what you pay for; however, it's not a blanket statement that can be applied to everything.
These tires are DOT approved with a UTQG rating of 600AA with a typical all-season tread pattern . The UTQG rating is based on test results not opinion.
