I just replaced my stock Continental with Michelin AS 4’s at Costco. The new tires (same size) feel smoother, grippy and more responsive. The only Cons I the tires width is not as wide as the rim. The lip of the rim stick out and more potential of getting curb rash.
In my 50 years of driving experience, tires start handling lousy after 15-20k miles and I usually get rid of them at @ 30k miles despite the "50,000 mile" rating.
It plays out like this. My corolla needs a $100 oil change every 5000 miles, or 2 cents per mile. The corolla tires run about $900 for 50000 miles, or 1.8 cents per mile for a total of 3.8 cents. My model 3 will need a $1200 tire set at 30,000, or 4 cents per mile. So, the additional tire cost is pretty much a wash against oil/tires on my corolla. Savings are on energy costs and brake life.
I'm about to pick up a used Model Y from Hertz, and the stock rims are Destroyed. Smaller, more stylish rims will give the benefit of fatter rubber for a better ride, less curb rash, and cheaper tires. Something people should really consider.
Nice video as usual. I have a late 2021 MYP which had the original pirelli's summer tires on them, which I sold them as soon as I could and purchased the Michelin pilot sport all season 4, except I went a step further. As you know the tires that come originally are overstretched and that is why the rims are outside the tires, make them exposed to curb rash. I went for 295/35/21 for the back and 275/35/21 in the front which squared off the wheels. I also get a softer ride because of the all seasons and better handling because of the wider tires. The all seasons are not sticky like the Michelin pilot sport 4s which are their summer tires. keep up the great videos
@@RosePigCooking Yes. Wider tires as well. 295/35/21 in the back and 275/35/21 in the front. The ride is much more smoother and softer, as there is much more rubber on the tire
People keep saying electric vehicles are heavy; the Tesla Model Y weighs about the same as the Ford Edge, for example. Tesla, like any other car, will consume tires based on its driving habits. For Tesla and many other EVs, it's the enormous torque that's mainly responsible for tire consumption.
I think Tesla went with Continental for efficiency. I am a fan of Michelin for many years but I can't accept 10% or more on range hit, so I will likely stick with Continental for now.
Sounds like you need to upgrade to the Tesla Y - My 2022 has been flawless. You can always go back to gas 🤣- Remember, you are no longer doing those other things needed by gas vehicles, gas, tires, breaks, fluids, transmission repairs, engine maintenance, filters, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc. Happy Sunday Chris! P.S. Michelin All Weather is the best! - Again, trade up to the Model Y
Continental Procontact RX has tread wear of 400 and Michelin Pilot Sport All season 4 has tread wear of 540 . So, Michelin has higher tread wear as well and that’s why it will last more.
Just bought new tyres in Australia for my Model Y. I had some new 20" alloys I had bought for my Kona electric which had the same PCD and offset as the Y. For 19" Tesla wheel I only had the OEM Hankook Ventus EVO E3 tyres at $495 AUD ea. or Michelin EV tyres at $550 AUD each to choose from in 255/45R19. Instead I got a set of Delmax Ultra Sport 255/45ZR20 105W fitted for $150 AUD each. A little more road noise and a 5% increase in energy consumption but for a saving of $1400 AUD I couldn't be happier.
I ended up going with the Sailun EV tires for my Model Y P. They have been great so far and at HALF the cost of the Pirelli’s or Michelins. Yes, I went with the stock size for the staggered set. These Sailun tires have been even more quiet than my stock Pirelli’s and hold the road every bit as well. I only have about 3K miles on these so far but they have been great. The Sailun tires look great and perform exactly as they should. Get them.
I think Tesla should really include tire in their whole business and eco system due It's very pricey and in need of real innovation. Tesla should look at re-threading tire technology to lower ownership cost of their electric cars. Tires in electric cars are the single most expensive maintenance.
i have 21 Mercedes GLE w/ 13k miles, needed to replace all 4 tires, and front brake pads already. Bigger heavier the car, the slower you should drive, otherwise it'll continue to be costly to operate
Here in NY my 2023 Y/LR came with Continental ProContact tires that say MS instead of XL (but written out on the tire elsewhere is Extra Load). I had to look it up--> MS = Mud+Snow so I'm waiting to see how it does after a Noreaster.
Love your informative an entertaining videos Chris. I have MYLR with GoodYear 20 inch tires made in USA. 50 k miles and have a few mm of threads before needing to replace. I really like the good year but costco doesn’t carry them
Highly recommend the continental extremecontact dws06 if you are on a budget and want the same if not better quality tires than the Michelin pilot sport or the Michelin cross climate 2s.
I have 28,600 miles on my y performance and had to replace the back tires at 22,000 miles. Cost me 1040 dollars for the stock 21 inch wheels. Ouch! The front tires are at 7/32 and still has plenty life in them. Looking to switch to 19 inch Gemini’s in the near future because you get more tire selection and much cheaper.
Yep, I’m a fan of the Michelin AS 4’s. I got them on my last car and am pleased that they came on my MYP. I was yelling at the screen when you kept saying “wet and snow.” It’s “winter and snow.” Classically, summer tires have been great in dry and wet conditions. Where winter tires do poorly in those conditions. But when temps go below 40 F, then it’s “winter conditions” and it doesn’t matter how dry the road is, the winter tires out perform the summers. (Again, this is classical/historical info. As compounds have improved, the lines have blurred. Prime example is with the AS 4s).
have you seen a temperature for pressure? I have trying to guess the extra 3-4 lbs over when at the gas station (with warmed up tires) to get “pressure when cold”
Depends on where you live, down here in Florida, you can barely get 25K due to the sand and crummy road conditions, I guess Trump didn't get to that promise. I know a guy who has had his Y for 1.5 years and after barely 21K miles, his tires were history, cost like $300-400 a piece to replace. I read somewhere that even the top brand tires don't last on EVs, not just Tesla, something about the car design specs, I don't know. All I know is the best tires go on SUVs. I had my Michelin LTs on my 1996 Explorer that lasted for 58K miles and over 7 years with still good tread depth and my Goodyears last 39K miles.
i didn't even think of how patching might be difficult with tires with foam in them. Interesting. I got a Model 3 a year ago and put over 30k on it. Thankfully my tires are still good. Just need them to hold on for 2 months until my MYP comes in! *fingers crossed*
I Did you know that the Tesla OEM tires on your car have foam glued to the inside of the tires for noise dampening? If you have a flat tire some garages will not repair the flat due to that foam.

Hey. Love your videos. I live in a suburb of Philly. I wanted to get all weather tires, but seem to be limited because I have the 20 inch induction on my Y. Can I just get 19inch tires and put on existing rims or do i need to get new rims if I want to get the 19 all weather.
@@EverydayChris When tires are new there’s definitely a slight low frequency hum thanks to the aggressive tread but nothing which ever bugged me and it got better after first 1000 kms. Definitely smoother ride over potholes. They’re snow peak rated which means I don’t need to keep two sets of wheels and can run these all year with just rotation. Approximately 5-10% efficiency hit over stock primacy’s but just like road noise it got better after first few thousand kms. Snow and wet weather performance was very impressive. Stock tires have 8/32 tread when new, CC2’s start at 10/32 and apparently they performance well in all weather conditions down to 2/32.
I also want all weather tire since I have no off season storage. Tire dealer told CC2 we’re not load rated for model y (103 vs 104) so would not install. Was that not a concern for u?
@@geoff.terryhurley8881 It was a slight concern but I was well under all limits. For example 100rating(7056 lbs) on CC2 for 19 inch model Y wheels vs 104(7936 lbs) stock. If someone is going rip cross a track at high speeds and stress test tires at turns, definitely don’t go to CC2’s.

Wow, you must have baby driven your model Y with the Gemini’s to get over 30k on the continentals. I’m getting about 24k with slightly spirited driving. Goodyear has a Electric Drive EV tire now for the Y with 40k wear rating Vs the Michelin EV rated at 20k.

The Y is like a fucking nightmare. I know one person who's battery died after 21K miles and 1.5 years, one who after a little over a year and 13K miles has to put on new tires for like $300 a piece, one whose charger shorted out their home breaker box and they lost power for a few days over the weekend and it was like over $1,000 to fix with the $500 for the charger and the $1,800 the electrician charged to install it. Also, a person who has had hers for a year and has already had to have the HVAC system fixed (no A/C), one of the structural components in the back where her kid sits needed replacement and the touchscreen shorted out and it cost all total, $28,000 too repair and Tesla's warranty didn't cover Jack, they had an exclusion for every component, she said paying $1,000 a month and extra $100 a month on their electric bill and almost $30K in repairs for a year old $65K car was the biggest mistake she ever made, well the second biggest mistake after her marriage, hahaha. It was voted Car and Driver and Consumer Reports least reliable and worst car of 2021 with a 1 out of 5 and 18 out of 100. There is already a recall, so be sure to check if you have a Y for your safety. Not to mention the $9-13K price increase for the new 2022 models from last year and the 2023 is said to increase, as well. Just save yourself the trouble and get a 3, its basically the same car just made better and costs less.

What tires did you end of choosing? I live in Washington state and heard I can only buy Tesla tires and not tires from elsewhere is this true?
@@franklinguillenalvarez7970 I ended up buying the Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3, which seemed to be the only ones available for the 21’’ Überturbine Wheels. Already went through some snow storms, they seem great.
The ones I got is the best choice!
That 40-50 definitely depends on what you were driving, My WRX definitely would not get to 50k. It was about the same as your 30k in the tesla.
what do you recommend for a good longevity replacement tire for the model y (20” rims)?
hmm the OEM tires are pretty solid but I love my pilot sport as4's so much
@@EverydayChris you think the ps-as4’s are quieter than the Goodyear eagles?
Yeah the tread is so thick on this thing
Hey. Love your videos. I live in a suburb of Philly. I wanted to get all weather tires, but seem to be limited because I have the 20 inch induction on my Y. Can I just get 19inch tires and put on existing rims or do i need to get new rims if I want to get the 19 all weather.
20 inch tires will not fit 19 inch rims
Thank you for using kilograms as well!
I have had Michelin Cross-climate 2s for almost 30k kms and im very impressed overall
was going to get those ones next! You like them?? How's the road noise and handling and most importantly, efficiency?
Model Y weighs around 4500lbs. Speed rating 149mph vs 168mph. I guess it all depends on the user. If someone is going rip cross a track at high speeds and stress test tires at turns, definitely don’t go to CC2’s.
Good to know. Before I go ahead with purchase, can u comment on any loss of range ( if any) compared to OEM ( mine are Continental Contact)
My Audi Pirelli lasted 15k miles so anything over 25k seems overachieving 😂
Thanks you saved me $1000 on replica of uberturbine. I almost bought it from tsportline which was a lot more expensive. Subscribed
Chris, thanks for the great content. Looking for new tires for my Y LR and your video was spot on! Only got 20K miles on my original 20” induction wheels. Going to go with your recommendation and purchase at Discount Tire. Thanks again for the info.
Love that place!
Hi, what did you get, I need tires for my 20 Y Long range? I m in OC CA
@@likearock2428 Hey, I purchased Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season tires. I really love them. As you know, Teslas are very hard on tires, but I hope these last longer than the OEM tires that my Y came with. I strongly suggest you purchase the Discount Tire warranty. I don't think I had a single flat tire in 20 years of driving SUV's but I have had 3 already in 30K miles in my Y. I had two flats in my new tires within the 5K miles. Good luck!!
Thank you Keith. Will do. 😊
Hi Bro
I have tesla model y with Gemini wheel what tire is best?
Video coming out tomorrow! I also did a tire video so check that out
What about self sealing tires?
Not the best! I had a tires guide video out
EV critics claims that EV tire usage is much worse than ICE car, due to EV‘s body weigt and more power, such that the cost saving of EV in maintenance is on par or higher than that of ICE car. Do you agree?
Agree in a sense depending on how you drive, my tires lasted pretty long. I guess what you don’t spend in gas you spend on tires
I got the 2022 model y long range came with 20 in rim with good year tire. Those tire has no grip on snow I park the car on drive way for charging as I turn around the car starts sliding ... Like wtf
Omg same! I live in Washington state and heard I can only buy Tesla tires and not tires from elsewhere is this true?
@@franklinguillenalvarez7970 I bought the 255 45r20 105v hopefully it fits on my wheel there is limited selection but I wanted a all weather tire. Cross climate 2 is the one I picked hopefully it fits. On the Tesla forum people said it fits but just a bit less clearance
Good year tires are mid
Hey Chris. Nice video again.
Did you paint your brake caliber yourself, and do you have a video about that? What kind of paint did you use? :)
Best regards
Hello! Powder coated! I do have a wheels video where I talk about where I did it!
@@EverydayChris Thanks I have tried to find it. Can you send me a link please? :)
Tesla Model Y Aftermarket Wheels for only $500!!? 👍

Do you using stock lug nuts on Replika wheels ? Thanks
Yes all stock stock tpms too
Wow, you must have baby driven your model Y with the Gemini’s to get over 30k on the continentals. I’m getting about 24k with slightly spirited driving.
Goodyear has a Electric Drive EV tire now for the Y with 40k wear rating Vs the Michelin EV rated at 20k.
Haha yeah crazy
Buy as4 Michelin. Conti don’t last
What’s the cost??
america's tires was like 1400?
I got a flat, I needed to replace the one tire it cost 475 dollars including labor. I have Gemini wheels model Y. I need a lower cost tire when I have to replace all four😵💫😂
@@EverydayChris love your videos, thank you.
I will try the perillies
Get the warranty!! Americas or discount tires
Did you say the model Y weighs 5400lbs? Lol might need to recheck that stat
I swear I saw it somewhere. But here’s this! Thanks! GVWR** Long Range Battery, Dual Motor: 5,302 lbs or 2,405 kg
@@EverydayChris 4363 is what’s on their website
GVWR is the curb weight (empty) + the maximum cargo capacity it can handle.
The 4,300 lbs number is the curb weight that companies like to use. Your actual use weight will be closer to the curb weight number since you aren't fully loading it all the time.
Where’s the follow up video to this?
Coming!!!
you didn't mention prices
Should be there! Check the links for the up to date prices and use my code for a discount!

HELP! I live in Washington state and heard I can only buy Tesla tires and not tires from elsewhere is this true? I need winter tires! I do not feel comfortable sliding like I have been the last 2 days!
I own a 2022 Tesla Model Y. I have right now 19” Gemini wheels.
Not true! Watch my tire video just need tires that are extra load!
Yikes. Not to throw fire to the flame but I think my battery just died after 30k miles loll
Jep basically.. except when you have kids than the trunk of the 3 is no option.
@@EverydayChris Oh no, did it die? what did it cost to replace it?
Does anyone know if you can use 255/45R20 ties on induction wheels?
I'm pretty sure you can because it's just the width of the tire that's changing so the same as my gemini's
75k on a prius :)
you must drive like BATMAN
