These guys were just so authentic. They started out as a punk rock band, became hip hop legends, and ultimately blended the two styles together into something nobody else has done before or sense. Not to mention all the other styles they incorporated into their sound through the years. Epic. Paul's Boutique would be something worth checking out just on your own time, Polo. Nothing else like it. Keep rocking!

No they were a joke…. Pushed in front of ppl as an opening act for RunDmc. It was a joke…. The joke became something more bc of that. They weren’t original nor some ground breaking thing. And they aren’t plying those instruments. It’s all fake. And I’m talking about the 3 idiot white boys pretending to play instruments. It’s all BS.

Coolest part of this song is that other than Yaugh’s bass fills, this entire song is one chord. They literally wrote one of the biggest songs of the 90’s strumming one chord for 3 min. That’s genus creativity.

They come from punk music, so at least 2 of them have played instruments. And there are about 20 years in between. On 'Paul's Boutique' their love of experimenting with instruments was already pretty obvious, and on the album 'Check your Head' you can't miss it anymore, as there are a lot of instrumental parts and they don't claim to be perfect, it's obvious that they played a lot of the instruments themselves and assembled them beautifully into tracks.
There were certainly influences from 'Urban Dance Squad' or 'Faith No More' at the time.
However, rocking it out live like that is pretty confident...

After the Paul’s Boutique album, which was mostly made of samples and some programmed drum machines, they moved away from samples and moved in a different direction. The still used some samples from vinyl but a lot of the samples they used were of themselves playing. They would get together and just jam on their instruments and record what they played. Then they would take snippets of the recordings and make new songs out of them and rap over them. Crazy creative! Who else does/did that? Except maybe Portishead

If I'm not mistaken, the guy on percussions to the left is Eric Bobo who mostly tours with Cypress Hill. On the keys is Money Mark.
Beastie Boys have a song called Bobo On The Corner in honour of Eric. The DJ is DJ Hurricane. He was in a group called The Afros.
