i was in that crowd, 16 years old at the time. The jumping crowd at the end of this song caused seismic sensors in the neighborhood to send out earthquake alarms. One of the best live performances i ever had the privilege of actually experiencing for real. Great memories....

They keep talking over the lyrics - that's why it went over their head. They weren't prepared for what they were about to hear to catch the cultural significance of it. IMHO, this is the kind of song that you have to have the lyrics laid out beside you as you listen to it for the first time to really get what they have the kahunas to say.

@@hmmhmmhmm3 Yeah I was looking to see if they actually heard "Some of those that work forces Are the same that burn crosses" because for me when I heard it when I was like 10 living in Ireland I realised what it was about. I didn't even know much about America or what was going on at that time of my life, but as an Irish person it resonated to how the troubles started up north. And the war of independence here too. So I'd imagine it would resonate with black people in the US even more so.

Rodney King was a tragedy. But, keep in mind, he led police on a high speed chase, nearly wrecked into other cars and then refused to exit the vehicle. He acted erratically and resisted arrest. The riots were even worse. Look up truck driver Reginald Denny, who was pulled out of his truck and savagely beaten. Every time, the riots are far worse than the police beatings. And they are NEVER justified. NEVER is looting, burning, beating or killing a justified response. In my eyes it’s worse.

    • @gems3604
      @gems3604 Рік тому

@@danielbeckstedt767 Don't you get the feeling we are part of a human lab rat experiment? Everybody does stuff to up the ante to ratchet up the violence. The so-called authorities and peace officers seem just as blameworthy as the original perpetrators. And then you have outside groups who go in and provoke and incite people to react and overreact. I am willing to accept the Rodney King was an unfortunate incident that got out of hand. But all of these different incidents that happen especially in urban black communities seem calculated to stir people's anger. In the George Floyd case you had outsiders handing out bricks and encouraging people to create mayhem. What does that have to do with happened? Here in the Nichols case the special unit is very special indeed. They were recruited specially. Why is that? The corruption in that department is blatant. I think people were hoping there would be a huge riot, but it didn't happen. Anyway, forgive me. I am one of those tinfoil hat people seeing a conspiracy everywhere. But trust me that Nichols case is about more than what you think.

Gentlemen, this band is one of the most influential bands from the 90s and their content carries so much weight, it would do you good to research them a little bit and watch the lyric videos. Rage against the machines messages were so raw and Ironically lost in their popularity of mostly white audience due to their sound. They carried a heavy political message trying to speak truth to power and shed light on police brutality of african americans, along with general government control over the lower classes. With their rock sound they found fame in the numetal communities which would not have been their target audience if you follow the lyricism. Everyone should listen to them now as their message hits hard and their music even harder. I really hope you can get into them because they were amazing.

The lyrics were "Some of those who work (police) forces are the same who burn crosses" and "Those who died are justified, by wearing a badge (police) they're the chosen whites".
Most Rage songs are about oppression or injustice.

As good as this song is, it’s a protest anthem. It doesn’t show off Zach’s lyrical ability and it doesn’t show Tom Morello’s skill in the guitar. For a first time listener, it more than likely sounds like just another rock song..

They speak truth to power and they do it fearlessly. Songs like "Freedom" and "War Within a Breath" will change your life. As others have said, definitely read the lyrics. Zack doesn't always enunciate well but his lyrics are fierce and truthful. They'll honestly give you one of the best history lessons in the historical oppression of marginalized communities combined with a powerful call to arms for people to rise up and fight back. Also, since you mentioned The Matrix, there are Rage songs at the end of the first and second films, "Wake Up" and "Calm Like a Bomb" so you've probably heard this band without even realizing it. I fell in love with RATM in the 90s after being exposed to 'Guerilla Radio' while playing the video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. I've been hooked ever since. Their body of work immediately resonates with me given their message, as well as their fusion of rap and rock. One of the most underrated contributors to rap unfortunately. I pray for new music weekly.

This song is still so powerful and holds so much weight. Also still very relevant today. I feel like it wasn’t given the attention it deserves, maybe if they had the lyrics pulled up it would’ve been appreciated more. This is one of those songs that pumps me up and inspires a fire/rage😏 in me
(As many others have stated, Killing In The Name was directly inspired by The LA Riots following the brutal beating/attempted murder of Rodney King by police. This all happened a couple months before I was born in LA in 1992 so it literally hits close to home for me)

Tom Morello is in the goat conversation for guitar, and all of these guys are on a lot of “best of” lists, individually and as a group. and yeah, Zack is a rapper. this album dropped my senior year of high school and blew everyone away. it was more “fuck the police” than “fuck you mom” 😉 they’re one of the most important and influential bands of the last 50 years and Tom Morello’s mom is an absolute legend.
There’s a show called “from cradle to stage” about moms who raised rock stars with an awesome episode about his mom.

This isn’t a song that was made just to be made like a lot of music these days. It’s so relatable to those who lived during the 90s, specifically younger people. You either get it or you don’t and idk if these guys got it. And that’s ok. Sometimes you have to look deeper into the background of some music to fully understand it.
On another note.. the simultaneous head banging was epic🤣 love these guys.

The song won the title following a Facebook campaign encouraging people to buy the song to stop The X Factor's winner's single getting the title1. The song sold 500,000 downloads, beating X Factor winner Joe McElderry's The Climb by 50,000 copies to clinch the top spot

They toured with Gang Starr after that, Zack has always been in the Hip Hop scene and Hardcore Punk scene. Tom Morello the guitar player is a huge Hip Hop head too, it’s obvious in their music. Zack De La Rocha had made songs with Run The Jewels and KRS One, when Zack left Rage, Chuck D and B Real filled in for him. I was into Hip Hop/Graffiti Writer and Rage Against the Machine got me into Punk Rock and Hardcore. I thought it was just noise and suburban teenager angst until I was introduced to Rage Against the Machine then I realized how much of a movement that was going on in Punk Rock and Hardcore about anti-Racism and anti-Fascism and I understood more what the music was about.

From Rolling Stone interview with Tom Morello (the guitarist)
“‘Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me’ is a universal sentiment. While it’s a simple lyric, I think it’s one of [Zack de la Rocha’s] most brilliant. And to me, it relates to Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass said, the moment he became free was not the moment that he was physically loosed from his bonds. It was the moment when master said, “Yes.” And he said, “No.” And that’s the essence of “Fuck you, I will not do what you tell me.” And that’s why it’s encouraging to hear it shouted at the Fed goons who are shooting tear gas at American citizens.
