Amber - they were still making music in 2011, one year before MCA died. They did have their biggest hits in the 80s and 90s, I'd say, but they definitely kept going for the duration. He was diagnosed with cancer a few years before, but was receiving treatment and had seemingly been doing better. His death was such a sad shock for their fans, and the other two chose to just disband, rather than go on without their friend.
Fun Fact: The video was nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards, but didn't win any (Video of the Year went to "Cryin'" by Aerosmith). When the award for Best Direction went to R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts," Adam Yauch (MCA) rushed the stage and got to the podium while Michael Stipe was getting his trophy. Yauch was in character as his alter ego, Nathanial Hornblower, wearing a huge fake moustache and lederhosen. This was the first such intrusion in the history of the show, pre-dating Kanye West's takeover of Taylor Swift's speech by 15 years. Yauch's stunt was baffling, as only the biggest Beastie Boys fans were familiar with Nathanial Hornblower. He and the group suffered no fallout from it, as the network figured boys would be (Beastie) boys. They were given the Video Vanguard award in 1998. - This Song Was In Two Rhythm Games. And in 2000 Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine climbed a piece of set scaffolding and refused to come down after his band lost the award for Best Rock Video to Limp Bizkit.

“Like many Beastie Boys songs, the lyrics are an in-joke among the band & crew. When they were making Ill Communication, they weren't very productive (they had a basketball hoop and skate ramp in their studio, which may have kept them from doing actual work). Their producer, Mario Caldato, was nearing the end of his rope, frustrated with their lack of progress. He implored them to finish a song, even if it was just an instrumental, so Adam "King Ad-Rock" Horovitz, in full smart-ass mode, quickly spat out a verse about how Caldato was "sabotaging" them by making them work and impeding their creative brilliance. That became the song's theme, which they put to an instrumental track they had already made. The song ended up being the lead single and biggest hit from the album.” - SongFacts

They are definitely a band. Their albums are heavy on rap and hip hop, but there is also elements and songs of rocks and hardcore. They even have a good amount of great instrumental tracks ranging from chill lounge music to jazzy explorations with hip hop influence. You’ve probably heard their instrumental music as “bumper” music (going into and coming out of advertising breaks) on radio shows and podcasts.
The videos from this record are like a line in the sand. These were the last great MTV videos. You already felt the ending was near but I knew that nobody was ever going to do it like this again. The writing was on the wall with MTV beginning to do more shows than videos at this point.
At one point maybe around this time, the Beastie Boys started bringing back their musical instruments and playing them live. They started to show the world that they weren't just a rap group.
Beasties started as hardcore punk before integrating hip hop into their sound.. they're dope legends because they infused both amazing genres effortlessly and are legends because they're arguably one of the 1st to do it, if not the first.
The beastie boys were the first group who did whatever it was they were feeling. They did things in rap, rock, hip hop, grunge, heavy metal. There wasnt too many music paths they didnt go. And above all, they didnt care who they pissed off in their process
Beastie Boys were a hardcore punk band before they moved into rap. They were members of The Young Aborigines who formed The Beastie Boys, where Kate Schellenbach was the drummer, who went on to be the drummer for Luscious Jackson. Egg Raid On MOJO is one of their most recognized songs from that time, but it's pretty obscure.
They broke down barriers. They didn't give a capital F. They broadened horizons to music for some people. They shall always live on, and this track is one of many that slams that fact in the book.
Seeing The Beastie Boys performing *"Sabotage"* on 'The David Letterman Show '94' and *'The MTV VMAs '94'* was most folks first, only and last time seeing The Beastie Boys playing live instruments. RIP Adam Nathaniel Yauch aka MCA, miss/love.
This was an exciting time for rock music, and the Beasties just casually dropped a crossover that brought in those rock sounds to combine with hip hop vocals and production; and it blew up in both communities. They came out of the punk scene, so crossing over and blurring the lines between sounds was always in their blood.
This came out when I was 18 and if there is one song I would call soundtrack of my life it would be this🤗 Saw them live on a festival once, simply unforgettable 😋
It's punk rock with hip-hop and rap. They started as a punk band. That's why it's a one chord guitar song with 2 drum kits. They are mad at their producer BTW, who keeps rushing them, not worrying about the lyrics while they carefully wrote each song and wanted to take their time. The video was an idea from them watching 70s reruns of Streets of San Francisco with a young Mike Douglas and Carl Malden.
Beastie Boys actually started as a punk band. 70's and early 80's New York saw a lot of crossover with punk kids and hip hop kids with hip hop kids going downtown to check out the punk scene and punk kids going uptown to check out the hip hop scene. The Beastie Boys were there for all of it. License To Ill and Paul's Boutique are primarily just hip hop albums with Check Your Head and Ill Communication being a blend of hip hop, rock, punk and funk.
Saw them live when I was in HS, probably their last tour I think in ‘98 or ‘99 I think. Tribe opened for them and the concert was nonstop 🔥- never forget that one
This is my senior year of high school. The level of mindblowing this song and video did for me and my friends then is an understatement. Beasties were punk in their infancy but traversed into hip hop. They play the all of the instruments. Watch their debut of Sabotage on the Letterman show.
Beastie Boys were a hardcore band way before they were ever rappers. This one does a good job of balancing the two together, and the video is one of my favorites: perfectly captures the vibe of a 70s cop show. Between them and director Spike Jonze, they were so damn creative.
The Beastie Boys started as a punk band , but they broke through with Licensed To Ill with Hip hop . They always infused their rock roots but had the utmost reverence for Old School Hip Hop after their second album Pauls Boutique they infused more rock and live instrumentation on Ill Communication and Check Your head . Love your reactions and seeing your channel develop over the past few years .
I remember when this song dropped, it was one of the heaviest mainstream songs out there. They deserve quite a bit of credit in the foundations of modern hip hop, but also they broke a lot of ground in "acceptable rock" to the point I would credit them with paving the way for commercial metal to get radio play.
This is arguably their most iconic song. When they were inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame the audience went crazy when Sabotage was performed. Plus, it has been used twice in recent Star Trek movies and in other movies/shows.
SO glad yall got to this one! Beastie Boys have been a favorite of mine for years, I started with their first album, License To Ill, in 1987 when I was just a kid, but Paul’s Boutique was the album that cemented it for me. License To Ill really isn’t representative of their style overall, tbh. I saw them live at Lollapalooza in Dallas in 1994, when I was 19 and this song was new-omg I thought people were going to start ripping the few existing seats out, everybody just went NUTS (myself included, of course)! 😂
There was a time in the 90's when people were questioning if the Beastie Boys were still considered as a rap group. They were soooo different and kept evolving. They were confusing the industry with their different sounds(rap, rock, reggae, guitar, etc....)
They actually started as a punk band. They all play instruments too and create all the music in their songs. One of one. That’s why they’re legends

One of thee best videos ever made!! A total love letter to 70's TV cop shows. Never gets old and still kicks ass!!!
This song always brings back memories with the boys back in college. Party hopping driving around jamming to this. It was our party anthem🎉
The beastie boys were the first group who did whatever it was they were feeling. They did things in rap, rock, hip hop, grunge, heavy metal. There wasnt too many music paths they didnt go. And above all, they didnt care who they pissed off in their process
One of the best. This music video was on MTV multiple times a day, every day for months when I was in college, back when MTV featured videos all day.
The Beastie Boys are iconic! It was a thrill to meet them at the Rocky Point Amusement Park in Rhode Island in the summer of 1993.
Oh that unlocked a childhood memory! 70's kid me at Rocky Point every summer😊
"Paul Revere" and "Hold it, Now Hit It" are absolute musts from the Boys.
ROOT DOWN! SUCH a vibe. Coolest song by them. Funky and fierce.
They had there own unique sound. I'm a hard rock fan but I loved the Bestie Boy6
They broke down barriers. They didn't give a capital F. They broadened horizons to music for some people. They shall always live on, and this track is one of many that slams that fact in the book.
They met at a Bad Brains show at CBGB's in the early 80's!
They're both a band and a group. I.e. MCA played bass, Ad Rock-guitar, Mike D- percussion.
This song is one of my favorites from them. So much i watched your reaction twice back to back.
This came out when I was 18 and if there is one song I would call soundtrack of my life it would be this🤗 Saw them live on a festival once, simply unforgettable 😋
Gotta be my favorite Beastie Boys tune. No matter how I'm feelin', I always crack it up and get absolutely pumped up after listening to Sabotage.
“Gratitude” by Beastie Boys is a rockin’ one too.
This song starts at 100 and never lets off the gas! So good, I hope it doesn't get blocked either : ) I love their "1980's cop show" parody.
Honestly, one of the greatest videos ever made! The Beastie Boys weren’t only pioneers of Hip Hop. The were changing the video game as well.
Welcome to the love of music that is Beasty boys.. nothing but love for them boys respect
So glad i got to see them in Dublin back in the 90s ( Ireland ) , still one of the best gigs to this day
SO glad yall got to this one!
"Fight For Your Right " is a banger! It put the Beastie Boys on the map.
Whatchu want is one of their best.
