You alternator belt needed tightening perhaps. The screeching sound is the belt slipping for what ever reason. The cold weather can cause it sometimes or damp but it soon clears. This may clear up the mystery of people with a screeching sound coming from their engine from time to time.
I have a cinquecento with much the same problem. I had a loose fan belt a few months back which led to the battery dying, but that's sorted. Now I think my alternator bearings are worn down because it's making a metallic noise whenever the engine is running. Think a new alternator is on the cards :/

Went into the garage, turns out I have a bolt loose that needs tightening :)
did that fix the problem permanently? or it came back after some time?
