  • Cotoneaster is the perfect beginner’s tree for bonsai. In this episode my kids do the autumnal pruning required to take their cotoneaster potensai to the next stage of development. This is the second time they have ever tried to do bonsai and follows on from the challenge I gave them in an earlier episode. Learn as Katarina takes the opportunity to demonstrate a new grip whilst James persists with his ‘magical’ creation…
I also get a surprise visit from Dawn of deiceramics. Yes - I bought a load more of her pots too!

Thank you Xav. I loved how you’ve involved your grown up children who had their own style for developing their bonsais. They were very confident in front of the camera. Chip and block comes to mind.
I’m starting to become more interested in different types of pots so I found the last part good too. 😁

I think the biggest issue I have found with bonsai is as the trees start to mature and get more worthy you realise that pots are just as important...and just as expensive sometimes :)

Love cotoneaster for bonsai. One of my favorite is a small cotoneaster horizontals cascade. Lovely to see your adult children exploring their first steps in this art form. Plus, you are so lucky to have such talented potters close by. None here specializing in bonsai pots. I have some wonderful pots from a niece but she is unable to work any longer so I have to order on line. Wilds of Idaho and all that!

Great to see this video Xav. I started bonsai-img earlier this year (about 40 years too late) and bought some cotoneasters really cheap early on to practice on. My son is now into bonsai too and my 8 year old grandson now wants a bonsai tree for Xmas. It’s certainly addictive and I’ve learnt a lot from yours, Tony’s, Peter Chan and Corin at Greenwood’s videos, so thanks, and I’m looking forward to next year and developing my trees and seeing how everyone else’s come on. Cheers.

Nice to see how these are getting on. I think the double branches on the right of Kat's tree looked like Two Towers until they were pruned. Each of the projects has individual charm but my preference for natural tree shaped trees gravitates to Tammi’s Cotoneaster.
