I've got 4 or 5. Going to see if I can pick up some small pots at Doncaster. First time repoting so thought I'd start with these. It been in the back of my mind & up popped your video ☺☺
I have noticed that the areas I sprinkle crushed eggshells to...the moss grows great...anytime I go foraging for moss in my yard, the best stuff has chips of shell sticking out of it! I just use a rock in a pot like mortar pestle style to crush em.
Glad I'm not the only one adding eggshells to soil. I use mortar to break it in to fine powder. The trees are looking good! Love the little helpers you got :D

you are really drastic with the roots. Doesn't that harm the plant at all? I wonder because I want to start with bonsai and cotoneaster is a beautiful plant so it would be my first choice. Love the video
I have a couple of Cotoneaster I started from young trees early this year. One of them had a long branch I trained downwards and wired in a zig zag to make a cascade. I was thinking you could have done the same with the second tree instead of cutting them all short. I bought mine with flowers on and now they are covered with red berries.
If you have bonsai outside, troubled with slugs, I use crushed(not powdered) crab shells and put around the plants being bothered. The bits of crab shells are like broken pieces of glass and the slugs will not travel on them. Also good for keeping ants and earwigs out of the plants also if spread around the base. As the shells decompose, nutrients for the bonsai.
Nice miniature tools and the urn you have them in !would you mind me asking where you got them from please? BTW love cotoneaster, bought 5 little cotoneaster dammeri seedlings recently.
Have you tried a Tiny Tim Cotton Easter? Grows about 6 inches tall and spreads about 3 feet and the leaves are very small. Might be a nice try for a bonsai for you, Mr. Winnard.
man i love cotoneasters! you dont see those around here too often as bonsai, i bought 2 small cuttings planning to plant them on the ground com winter!
Scott Winnard thanks man! i appreciate it! and yeah i have everything in pots as well, big pots, coming this spring i willbe puttin on ground a couple small trees not many because i like growing them ina. bigger pot that way i can work on it wheni want i dnt have to lay on the dirt to even try to look at whats goin on 😂
@@LetsDoBonsai sorry to hear x yes, cotoneaster dies on me when I just transplant it and haven’t touched the roots. I think they are hardy but might not enjoy being disturbed once growing somewhere they like. I live in Australia though. It’s very hot here.
I don’t know what your winter temps are typically where you live but where would you suggest overwintering them in an area with freezing and subzero temps in the winter?

This comment reminds me of a time when I was 5. I went out and planted eggshells in the garden because I wanted to grow my own egg plant.

So i just spent a full 5min Looking at a man breaking eggshells you got to love bonsai it is so relexing

Yes it was a bit too much maybe one of the trees survived and the other died off which was probably to do with the root work.

I found a few on ebay not too expensive - cotoneaster should grow quite easily

Shocked at how much you tore at your rootball- I will kill things just transplanting them, how does your tree survive that?
In heinsight you may be correct, one lived and the other didnt make it.

What soil did you use with these Scott?
Pop the shells in the oven while it cools after cooking dinner; makes them an absolute cinch to crush!
Where did you get the small root rake?
Sorry for the late reply here - i got mine from ebay, and a few more for when we had the giveaway.
Egg shells do release calcium into the soil along with some other nutrients for an added bonus from the research I seen on it.

Hi Dean they were kept outside and in the small greenhouse over winter, one died and one lives on.

They do weel in all weathers here in the UK and overwintering is normally fine outside, for subzero i beleive they can go down to about -15 C
I wonder if anyone ever told Scott the Cotoneaster is one word.
Now, I just bought one and it is STIFF in the pot. If I'm raking the roots, what are the chances I'd hurt it?
Work the roots out wards in a radial pattern - you will rip the grossing fine roots but they will grow back
Is this bonsai still alive?
One of the 2 survived 1 died off unfortunately we will be doing some more work and bringing in a new Cotoneaster to replace the lost one.
