Xavier's Bonsai Retreat
United Kingdom
Приєднався 11 кві 2017
Welcome to my bonsai filled backyard. My name is Xavier and I have been learning and collecting trees since 2002. My kids encouraged me to start this channel after the death of my wife, Zita. I am definitely not an expert but what I do know I hope to share with you. Most of my technical knowledge is based on information provided through watching Ryan Neil of Bonsai Mirai or Peter Chan of Heron's.
I love 'acting the clown' in front of the camera so beware of some of my quirky humour that pops up in my videos. This style may not appeal to everyone but life is far to difficult not to have a laugh once in a while!
If you are new to this hobby then I encourage you to have a look at my Bonsai Basics series in which I 'start again'...
God bless & happy Bonsaiing

WHY Tony's Bonsai Experiment DIDN'T go as expected!
Happy New Year Xavier, the game looks like a bit of fun. I like what you did with the Scots pine. With the final front you showed us, i think the bottom of the tree looks very straight(difficult to tell in 2D) but the literati feel is the way to go in my opinion.
Very good decicison for bending that branch down . Nice litle Literat. Good Job Xav. cheers
Cheers Tom - now I just need it to produce alot of growth and backbudding for the apical region :)
@ Yes but that will come. Sun and furtilizer . 💪🏼👍 let it 2 years grow and you have a lot of Green to work with . Cheers
Happy New Year! Looks like you got lucky for Christmas, with that game. I think you did the right thing with the False Cypress; I thought that branch wanted cutting off too.
Thanks Trevor. Happy New year to you and your family. That cypress is going to be one of my slow developers I think. The gameis great fun and the family enjoy it too :)
Wondering if it's okay to bring in trees from the cold to work on them during their dormancy? Is it just a matter of temperature range or length of time warming up? Mine are currently in a deep freeze, and I'm anxiously awaiting warmer weather which won't be for another 2 months at least!
Freeze has started so i definitely don't touch anything now. The pine is quite young and we had some mild weather so I feel happy I could get it way with it. The tools are definitely in the shed till February :)
Happy 2025 Xavier! Lovely Scots pine - I love the graceful branches and slender trunk - will make a fine literati. Both of your chosen fronts for the tree look nice - pretty movement and branch placement. Can't wait for the new candles to come out.
Thank you Sue. Definitely early days and my aim really is to establish that initial literati shape and then let it push out so i can get better backbuds for the apical styling next year (maybe)
Wishing you and your family a peaceful 2025 Zavier....looking forward to more Bonsai projects👍
Thak you for your support and I wish the same for you and your family.
That looks like a cool game Xavier mate very cool 👌 Love the tree 👊👊
Played twice last night with the kids and it is still good fun and producing different results
Happy 2025 to you and your family. Liked the decisions on the Scots Pine, the side you preferred was best. 🎉
Thank you Randy. Let's all hope for a thriving 2025 for our families and bonsai :)
Test
God bless and thank you Martina.
Ooh, love the clip from Hitchcock's awesome "Notorious" Xavier ❤xx
You spotted the film - bonus points for you!!! Happy New year :)
Happy year to you and all your family Xavier, all the best for 2025. The Sots pine look great but the apex definitely needs work, it looks very symmetrical and upright. The game looks fun and you did well to beat your self, well done 👍
I want more backbudding in the apex first - just a very early styling for the trunk and main branch really :)
Nice! Brings back memories...😊 Happy 2025!
Happy New Year Kennet
A Bonsai game. Seems like the game of life for us Bonsai lifers! Scotts Pine looks great, as do you Xav!
A surprisingly interesting and fun game. Played it again yesterday with my kids.
Hi Xav. I think I will give the game a miss. Totally lost. I have a problem playing snap. I like the idea if a literati though. Happy New Year.
No worries - it was just a bit of fun to mix in with the Pine. Happy New year
Happy 2025 Xavier love the Scott pine the front for me would be with your choice good decision to remove the branch 👍the game looks fun anyway looking forward to future videos 🫶
Thanks Paul - We are now into our frosty weather for a few weeks so time to sit back and enjoy the break :)
great vvideo mate.. hope you had a nice christmas and happy new year :)
We had a lovely Christmas and have just woken up to snow! I pray that your festive season has also gone well :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat nah it was a disaster here mate. my dad passed out in the bathroom and smashed his face open on the sink hes nearly 80 and not well at all.. oh well heres to the new year upward and onward my friend :)
love the work on the pine! do you keep your scots pine outside after big cuts this time of the year?
Happily covered in snow right now - there never seems to be much problem.
Thanks for another great video Xav! Really enjoyed the back and forth with the game and the tree
I'm not a big game person but this was a lot of fun and never seems to play the same way :)
Hi Xav the temperature while I am watching this, it is freezing literally soil hard as nails now, I love those two woman she could die. That game has lost me, my brain hurts my friend. The pine front is the one with the label, I liked the branch you took off ,it needed wiring then bringing in too shorten it, bad idea on the false cypress I liked it before you cut it off. 😅 As I keep saying your tees your decisions. All the best Xav for 2025.
This is what makes bonsai such fun - always different choices but in the end it keeps busy hands at work. Happy New Year JOe :)
More sponsored products is totally fine with me. I’m not paying your bills. Just enjoying your free content
I think this is going to become a running joke from now on :)
Great video as always see you on the 10th January (Dave )
Looking forward to it D&L :)
Sometimes i JUST wished, you would use less CLICKBAIT in your videos. (This may SURPRISE you)! 😐
😐
@TheBonsaiGarden Sorry, i know it's the UA-cam game you have to play to some extent, but as a viewer sometimes it saddens and annoys me that simply making good videos seems not to be enough for the algorithm.
If the video had no title or thumbnail I'd still watch it because it is a Bonsai Retreat video and I have enjoyed every one.
I made it very clear in the first line of description and in the first 1 miute of the video. People who watch my channel know that I mix up my content occasionally. I'm just sorry you didn't appreciate the video. Lots of useful tips and the game was great fun too. Happy New year and all the best for 2025.
Morning Jason :)
Liking your work on the literati pine. Definitely lose that first branch on the right. Not a lot to choose between either front option at the moment.
So true - this one now needs a few years of growth and back budding.
Im not even religious but "Happy Bonsai and god bless", is my favorite greeting from all the Bonsai channels !
You are the first person to comment on that - thank you. Allegedly the UA-cam Algorithm doesn't like it when we use such blessings? All the best for 2025 :)
Thank you. I will try watering with rain water and add a little Mg sulfate. ❤
Let me know how it works out - so much to learn still :)
👍👌🙂
Happy New Year Bruce
I'll bet the yellow "Fairy Soap" is lemon scented. According to an entomologist I know, lemon is a repellant. The soap and oil clog their breathing apparatus and they suffocate. I keep a spray bottle available all the time. I usually don't need the oil and the mix is about 30 to 40% soap to water. I spray, wait 15 minutes and spray good with clear water. Repeat if necessary .
Thanks - I shall up my soap content based on this. All the best for 2025 :)
Great advice. I'll be trying to figure out a way to use that grow light. You might check out Michael Hagedorn's comments on Superthrive (pp 205/207) in Bonsai Heresy. His conclusion is that "..[a]bout its effectiveness, the science is minimal and inconclusive, and so benefits may exist that are not yet proven." I use it just in case it works!
I tried to wade my way through his book but just got a bit lost. This was recommended by a bonsai grower who has lots of good results from it. From someone who never fertilises his trees this may cause them a little bit of a stomach ache :)
In what season you do this ?
It was late summer or early autumn. This short comes from a longer video on Yew. All the best for 2025
Thanks so much. Wish you the best for 2025 🌲🌲🙏🙏💥💥🌹🌹
I think I like both. Especially with the wiring you did at the end 😊
Thank you - it is developing slowly but I am still happy with the cut. I like your username - very soulful :)
I'm about to repot a white pine this spring , I'm in Essex , what soil would you recommend please and should I add sphagnum moss Thanks
Hi, I would use a 50/50 mix of pumice and zeolite(or akadama) with some activated charcoal and an oceana slow release root feed. If the tree is healthy I would not be using sphagnum - but that is only my experience. All the ebst for New year and I would love to see apicture of this once it is repotted :)
Uumm interesting mate... i done some light pruning on a couple of larch end of november and applied wire on branches , like you say everybody seems to have slightly diffrent views and ideas as to tackle this issue...ive seen some posts by miroslav were he has pruned his larch and wired in winter, anyway lets see.. all the best to you Xav.😊
I think most of us are working out that everything really depends on your micro climate and the degree of protection you have/need...if you do work at less ideal times of the year. As a rule I am happy to wire up my larches once I know which buds have made it through the winter. Happy new Year :)
In my experience, even the healthiest of my ficus bonsai never really have solid, compact root balls. A lot of the roots are also easy to tear off, while teasing out the old soil. Even if you’re being super careful. I think some of the roots came off while you were removing the old soil but they aren’t all that important. I always bring mine inside during winter and leave them alone but I might invest in one of those light bulbs!! Nice video!
I am definitely seeing the results of the gro light. A lot of new buds openign. Normally winter is a slow death that takes 2 or 3 months of spring to overcome. I am looking forward to seeing how positively this alters their spring push :)
Pretty sure the "oval things" are catydid eggs.
Thanks so much for the identification. They look really interesting as grown specimens. All the best for 2025 :)
wished i lived closer for this mate... bet you had a fun few days. sorry im binge watching bonsai vids lol :)
Enjoy the videos - I don't mind :)
Oh Bonsai Tree oh Bonsai Tree perfekt Song. Great
Thanks - a lot of fun working out the chorus
👍👌🙂
Thanks bruce
Hope you have had a great Christmas. You probably have been asked this several times. But when is it best to repot bonsai?
Nearly all trees will repsond well to late winter when the buds are just beginning to swell. Indoor stuff really depends on how you are feeling :)
Thanks, love your videos@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
Thanks for a great year of interesting videos. I have learned a lot, but more importantly have been motivated to try things that I wasn't confident about after seeing you do them. Happy holidays Xavier! 🎅🎁🎉⛄🌲 PS You definitely encouraged my tree addiction, but since I'm retiring in a few weeks I'll just have more to do. 😂
What a great way to start off your retirement :)
