This tree has captured a part of me I didn’t know I had. Like you I don’t create many mame trees although I seem to have plenty of container options 😆 I really enjoyed this episode thank you for your energy and time.
My question, if you were collecting a large cotoneaster from field grown material, when would you do it? Mid spring? Thank you 🪴

I would suggest latter part of spring when it’s warmer and the tree is growing already. You definitely don’t want to do it when it’s still dormant.
What you might want to do is the year before do a harsh cut back allow it to bud back using the strength built up in the field and then the following year you dig up and then you already have some branchlets to work with.

Great video and really nice tree and pot Terry. What time of year do you take cotoneaster cuttings like that most successfully? I have a nursery stock plant that I am wanting to start off but will have some decent sized branches taken off that I want to start as cuttings. Thanks so much
Thanks very much Greg. I believe it was late spring that I took the cuttings. Not all of mine took but this was fortunately one of those which did. A safer way would be to “French layer” the branches off, will take a little longer but has better strike rate.
Hi Terry, good choice of pot! Quick question...I tend to get green mosses that grow on the surface of the sphagnum cover layer when I use it, surely that happens to you too; do you bother replacing the sphagnum with new one when it is full of green moss? I always wonder whether to let it be or remove the green moss, as it can suck some of the nutrients from the soil and eventually grow onto the tree's trunk. Thank you!
Thanks for the compliment Victor. Actually the goal is for green moss to develop on the sphagnum. So no, I do not remove it when this happens. Actually it’s meant to be good for the tree as (as it filters the water). The amount of nutrient it will consume is minimal. Yes you need to prevent it from growing onto the trunk as it will cause bark to rot. You can lightly spray moss that develops onto the trunk with undiluted vinegar to kill it.

Hi Yurup. I grew the mother tree, this was a sort of truncheon cutting. At a guess I’d say I’ve been developing it as a bonsai for around 5 years.
Where can I get this water gun? Do you have an exact name of this tool? Thank you in advance.
It’s an ink spotting gun used by the silk screening industry. You can approach suppliers to them.
