I love this little car. I’ve driven five of them since it came out in 2012 and it’s just such a fun back to basics sports car. I’m in a position now where I can get a 2015 model and it will be my only car. My work is a very short 10 minute drive from my house so it’ll cover low mileage under my ownership. This is literally the car I’m about to buy, in fact if it was LHD I wouldn’t mind driving that exact one (plus I’m not a huge fan of the automatic transmission). My mate had a Subaru BRZ which I drove and I completely agree. It was only fun to drive when you revved the shit out of it and threw it round some corners. It desperately needed a turbo and he was planning on installing one which would've given it the power it so lacks, but alas, he sold it instead for more than he bought it for. That's another thing - they seem to hold their value quite well.
I’m 64, living in Ca. where lots of mountain roads exist making my automatic way quicker less fatigued frolicking my 2019 Toy 86 mile after mile on lengthy rides here in my county. As I have the base model I could care less about stereo listening

I owned an 86 and can confirm the back seat is extremely uncomfortable... She felt the same, but we tolerated it for the 2 minutes it took to confirm. Certainly a great cat otherwise.
I've only driven one of these on a half hour test drive, but really loved it. My current daily is an F type V8 which is hilarious around town but a bit lacking when you really get on it, I think a car like this is the opposite, really fun when you're on it, but kind of dull the rest of the time.
I have 2018 BRZ, not sure why he would say it is not easy to live with as a daily driver, I even look forward to when it snows here in Colorado, I put my winter tires on and 60 lbs of sand bags in the trunk and have fun driving in the snow.
I like these era of Toyotas they look much nicer than the gaping grilled ones of today take this gt86, the 2014 RAV4, and 2014 Auris and Yaris for example they’re all very attractive looking cars
actually liked this review, its reasonable and actually shows what the pro and negatives are in the general everyday use for the car that most people will likely use it for. keep it up
I had my eye on one since they were launched back in like 2012. One day I told myself... Ive been a Celica owner for well over a decade so I was used to harder suspension and low rooflines and impractical interior space. It seemed like a natural progression for the next car. I work in the motor trade and one day a Gt86 came in and I thought nows the time, I got to take it out on a private no pressure test drive. It drove brilliantly, grip was nice and the seating position was bang on... But like you say I hit some traffic, and the magic vanished. I got to stop, look around, and became bored, and then disappointed more and more. The switches felt cheap and barely attached. The dash felt like it was made from recycled chocolate box plastic. The build quality felt no different or better than the 13 year old Celica I drive everyday. The excitement trickled away the more I drove it, as logical brain took over, do I want to spend this money on something that felt no better to sit in than the car I was already driving? It certainly felt no quicker when the road opened up. My killer question would, could it be a car I would happily sit in rush hour traffic in, knowing I'd handed over a wedge of cash, could I live twisting the cheap plastic knobs of the heater or the lifeless barely attached feeling switch for the AC. I got out feeling like I'd been gut punched. Id been looking at these cars for years, dreaming of driving one and owning one. But after one drive it was all gone. For similar prices you can get a more luxury feeling BMW Z4, or a New shape Mazda MX5, which after driving left an impression on me that I can't shake, it felt better to drive than the Toyota, the build quality and design of the dash looked a decade ahead and a class above the Toyota. Where the Toyota left me with the feeling of 'never meet your heroes' when I got out, the MX5 felt more like a whirlwind romance, intoxicated and never wanting it to end. So why didn't I buy the MX5? Well it's a soft top, and I currently live in an area that would probably mean the roof of my shiny new MX5 being stabbed or slashed by vandals. So until a RF model drops in price it's the trusty Celica and me for the time being.
I've proudly owned 4 celiacs , 2 mr2s and 1 supra and have wanted a gt86 for 11 years , I have the money to buy one but I'm indesisive about taking the plunge or do I buy something else to give me the joy? Dilemma , what else is good at around £12k second hand?
Not long after this car came out l was walking through the car park at Rudyard Lake when two chaps in their mid 70s came the other way complete with fishing rods, tackle boxes and floppy hats. I presumed they were going to get into a Hyundai or Kia. But they didn't. They got into a GT86, which taught me not to jump to conclusions. I guess it is an easy car to live with.
The misconception of this vehicle is that it need be compared to Porsche's and V8 Audi's.. it's basically more like a 4 cylinder Honda only has RWD, a LSD, fantastic transmission and a Boxer motor. I recommend a few aftermarket upgrades to bring out its full potential and you'll be happy with this machine.
I've only been driving around 5 years nearly, and owned a 124 (Fiat) and Mk3 TT but had to step down to a standard A1 after moving to London. I'm on the horizon of moving out soon and I've had my eye on this for a while, and I have to say this video I think may have just tipped me over in favour of securing one this year! What you said about it being an "ideal second car" resonates with me because I work from home, so my only time spent in the car is for long (fun) trips up the country, or for leisure meaning my primary car always feels like the average second car. I have to say too, I totally agree about the spoiler. It just looks...wrong without it. Great video by the way, you have a new subscriber :D
Im looking for a second 'fun' car and have narrowed it down to mx5 mk3, s2000 or this. The first two put me off a tad as I like to put my seat back more than they will allow, and this gt86 obviously is a hard top, but looks great. Im now warming to it a lot after this review. Like this reviewer...no bullshit, just his honest thoughts on it.
Went to my first car meet last night with my 2013 GTS stock with modified subwoofer oriented system and it’s 😅 can’t wait to mod for performance later!
I got a manual 2017 Orange Edition. I was a bit nervous to get this as my previous car, a fully loaded 2014 Audi S3 Convertible, was super fast and lux but a bit dull to drive! Great review, spot on!
I just bought one from High Lane garage, agree with everything you say, but you should try a manual, the power comes in a lower revs. Love watching your on the road shots, spend most of my time trying to spot which lane you are on. give us a wave as you go past our house while you are hammering up the by pass.
I really enjoyed the video 📹 I the gt86 will be my next car but in Red! I had a brilliant Red hyundai coupe once wasn't very fast but looked the business! Even though thought it was crap , I loved it!
I drove an auto 86 before I bought my manual 86 and I would be quite happy with the auto to be honest - it is, as you say, a great transmission. I bought my MY14 86 nearly a year ago and I don't regret it for a second. for the money there is nothing out there that matches it for involvement and balance. anyone who says this car needs more power just doesn't "get" what this car is all about.
Positive:- I love your reviews and I know it's a long way from Cornwall to Stockport but I plan to come up and buy a car off you one day, Negative:- I'll keep them to myself 🤣🤣
@@HighPeakAutos The only two things I dislike is the cheap interior and spring on the clutch pedal. The power isnt even really an issue, I rarely get to open her up with todays traffic, but when I do and it hits +5000 revs its plenty fast.
A good mate of mine has a 20 year old Celica and it drives incredibly well, and is very reliable. Goes like stink too. As ever, your reviews are always great, based on real understanding of the mechanicals and how cars work. (That said, I wouldn't have one. I'm a BOF, and like wallowy old hectors).
I looked at this car and it was on the list because of it's reviews but when I realised the engine was a Subaru boxer with 200 bhp I looked elsewhere and bought a BMW M235i with 330 bhp, that was 4 1/2 years ago, I now have a MINI JCW with 231 bhp, now that's an exciting drive.
At last someone who does car reviews for normal people with normal budgets as well as real world reliability reviews. Far too many reviews concentrate on mega expensive cars which most people can never afford. Keep it up bud.
Nice one. Another affordable review what the average man (or woman) could afford to buy. Easy on the eye but I can’t help feeling it would have been a proper GT with a 2.5 or 3 litre lump in it. As it stands I think for money saving alone plus similar fun factor I’d opt for the MX5
Hello like the variety of cars you've shown lately, keep going, variety is always interesting. With the GT86 only 2 things you have to do,1 change the oe Michelins for anything further up the performance tyre range (primercey hampered the handling as they gave no grip)2 remember you have a torque lite engine because Japanese manufacturers don't understand what torque is. Regards Simon.
A supercharger is a great way to get another 100 BHP and, more importantly perhaps, boost the low to mid range torque. No need for any engine internals strengthening, con rods, clutch etc, with this level of power increase. I've not seen it done with the automatics though.
I have a manual one, it just a pure drivers car, it's not happy in stop start traffic but on open country roads it's a joy to drive. Decided to get one before the fun police ban petrol cars. No regrets. Boot isn't to bad, enough space for a weekend away at a nice hotel, dog isn't so happy sharing the footwell but...hey ho :)
I have been looking forward to get home and watch this, WHAT A TREAT I love this car, in my opinion it's one of the best sport cars design ever made Hot,aggressive and affordable, As expected great honest review nicely done, top class mate
I was contemplating one of these until the supra came out and learned it had a b58 ever since then I looked at the M240i. You can pick one up for less than 20k and it’s got similar performance to the new 50k supra with the same engine. I’m looking to pick my M240i up next year.
Always a thumbs up from me Matt 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I do think that comment " If you have any negative comments keep um to yourself " was brilliant😁😁😁😁😁 and looking at the comments section it seems to have worked ( Masterstroke )

@Naruto Uzumaki nope dont have one but I have heard and read Several test and articles That they Are reliable Both subaru and toyota model. Great car enyoy☺
The 17 inch wheels are good for 225's even though they are fitted with 215's as standard. Mine came with Michelin Primacy's which are fitted to the prius... hence all the references to it both here and on other reviews. That compound for a summer tyre is a tad harsh for all but the warmest of days here in the uk -- I think the car here has avons which would offer more grip. I live up here in scotland, and chose crossclimate plus for mine. I only get 3 months a year where it is consitantly outside of the mid teens, so the back end of the car is lethal in the cold damp conditions we get without a decent weather tyre. The point here, is that this car is so well balanced what you shoe it with makes a massive difference. From a driving point of view, if you a cornering hard, and the balance of the car certainly lets you do this, you have to remember that you can't light up the real wheels with 200hp at the same time, you have to choose between grip and acceleration, unless you want a load of fun at the back of the car. Most cars do not give you the opportunity to do this in such a balanced way ---- driving this car makes you a better driver as you very quickly learn what is actually going on between the rubber and the tarmac, it is communicated very clearly. ( I drive my other cars carefully now as I have no idea what the conditions under tyre are like compared to driving the GT)
1carus John we live up in Aberdeenshire 1000 feet up a hill. With a decent set of winter tyres on 16” rims and it was awesome in the snow and ice. Surprisingly capable and fun car.
@@Backs4more Yep... the cross climate tyres I have are a four season tyre, but not bad in a few inches of snow... But not a winter tyre. On hot days, you can feel the tyre block loading up and releasing with a bit of a ping as you straighten out.. it's fun but probably eats the rubber. The rubber is soft and prob good upto about 20c, after that I take it a bit easy. If I was living south it would be a different choice. Not many cars are good enough to demonstrate tyre ability like this car. Learning to toe and heel it has been fun, really helps to keep it settled when breaking down into a corner whilst down shifting.... stuff I've not done since been a kid driving cars with no synchromesh. Have fun.

why would you put smaller tyres on in the winter wouldent that remove some of the already very limited ground clerance
Dub 420 winter tyres as far as i am aware are not low profile so would need smaller wheels
Dub 420 because you want a taller side wall to allow tyres to flex more and get better grip. The rolling diameter of the tyre is identical.

Great on country roads, go into a corner feels like it's on rails. The gearbox is sublime, very important part of the driving experience. Great review as always.
I have an 86.
It's awesome.
I am aware of the compromises you need to make with a car like this but If like me your in your 20’s and don’t haul many things or people around then you can live with this car. Can’t wait to get mine.
How have you found your 15 plate now?;
@@ameerahme nope but I did get a 2018 🙌
@@ShanesAutos How have you found the experience with it? In terms of speed, control, corners, comfort and anything else you'd like to add ifthat's ok
@@ameerahme it’s been great. Ride is firm but comfortable. Gets about 31 mpg with me. A lot of fun to drive and usable as a daily as long as you don’t carry a lot of stuff or people on a regular basis.
Give this man more credit he deserves!
I cant wait to see the second generation in a year or two.
This is literally the car I’m about to buy, in fact if it was LHD I wouldn’t mind driving that exact one (plus I’m not a huge fan of the automatic transmission). I agree with you 100%, when you drive it slowly you almost tend to hate it, but when you get it to speed, then you get the whole point of it. Thank you for this kind of reviews, loving the channel and the way you explain the cars you try. Keep up with the good work!
Diego Navarro Antoñanzas Thanks for watching! I appreciate it 👍🏻
I love mine. I've had it a little over a year and never get tired of driving it. Mine is a manual and I haven't driven an auto, but I've heard the auto is pretty good. I think it looks better without the spoiler. The spoiler looks like something they threw on as an afterthought.
Just rented the automatic version (no manual available). I'm pretty disappointed. I'm sure the manual is more fun.
Pleased to hear it!
Great trip Matt. Your totally honest reviews are always a joy to watch and listen to.
Cheers
Mike
PS ... Loving my XF :)
Mike Waldt Thanks Mike! Enjoy the XF 😉
In my opinion you are one of the best car reviewers out there amongst the top dogs. Straight to the point, always useful informations. I wish more of the car reviewers were like you. No complaining, no whining, not nitpicky. keep up your good work mate.
Thank you! I appreciate your comments :)
I owned an 86 and can confirm the back seat is extremely uncomfortable... She felt the same, but we tolerated it for the 2 minutes it took to confirm. Certainly a great cat otherwise.
Cat?
@@iliketowatchvideos47 nope. Dog
I agree about the engine choice, being a boxer engine I wouldn't risk buying one without a full main dealer history.
Thanks Matt, great review as always. This has finally made my mind up after many months. I’m off to buy a GT86 👍🏻
Cheers! Go for it.
Every time I get to drive this car it just puts a huge smile on my face. Love it to bits, thinking to get one as a second car as you say ..
Nice review. Pleasant to listen to. As an owner my self of this beautiful vehicle, I must say that the boot is in reality quite big and useful.
I like these era of Toyotas they look much nicer than the gaping grilled ones of today take this gt86, the 2014 RAV4, and 2014 Auris and Yaris for example they’re all very attractive looking cars
actually liked this review, its reasonable and actually shows what the pro and negatives are in the general everyday use for the car that most people will likely use it for. keep it up
Thanks for finally reviewing a decent reliable car
You're quite right. I agree :)
I agree :)
That’s a beautiful car 😍
Rev up you engines! Love it.
Thanks!
I have the same car. I found that always keeping it in sport mode it's perfect and I use the paddles in auto mode to shift down a lot. Great car
The auto gearbox is excellent isn't it. Much better than I thought it would be
Another great review. And good of you to match your outfit with the interior 😆
I had a 63' plate manual from new in December 2013. Best car ever. I miss it.
I had a 2012 in burnt orange. Only parted with it due to having kids. Miss it so much.
Just clocked up 120 miles today at Donnington Park in my friends GT86. They drive great. 👍
Great car. Great video also, love watching your car reviews. Keep up the good work
Daz Sid Thanks!
I just bought one from High Lane garage, agree with everything you say, but you should try a manual, the power comes in a lower revs. Love watching your on the road shots, spend most of my time trying to spot which lane you are on. give us a wave as you go past our house while you are hammering up the by pass.
Love your talk on this great car .
Like your sense of humour and your comment on a friend with no head
Would like to buy a second car like this Toyota gt 86
I really enjoyed the video 📹 I the gt86 will be my next car but in Red! I had a brilliant Red hyundai coupe once wasn't very fast but looked the business! Even though thought it was crap , I loved it!
honestly mate.. always wanted 1 - love the DESIGN
I like a manual cause it keeps me awake on the commute to work at 5am and is way less boring and better mpg/LP100k
Thats right. You feel totally connected to the car
Bought one superb car so pleased !!
They've confirmed a whole new GT86 / BRZ is due soon around 2020 hopefully just be just as good. Great review.
I'm interested to see what that's like :)
@@HighPeakAutos I'm hoping for a hybrid version similar to what Honda did with the CRZ.
It probably will be. Thats the way things are going
Always enjoy your videos. Never get old!
Glad you like them!
Manual gearbox & better tires transforms the car.
Got one same colour last week.. today decided to UA-cam and I am more in love 😍
It’s the best car I ever had 👌🏼
Good choice! Enjoy!
@@HighPeakAutos thanks mate nice video to
I think you're videos are great! Banging review and production.
Thanks
A very good description of a sports car. Good information on price.
Positive:- I love your reviews and I know it's a long way from Cornwall to Stockport but I plan to come up and buy a car off you one day,
Negative:- I'll keep them to myself 🤣🤣
Hahah Cheers!
The most honest and accurate review of a GT86. I should know, I have one.... :)
David John Thanks! How has it been?
@@HighPeakAutos
The only two things I dislike is the cheap interior and spring on the clutch pedal. The power isnt even really an issue, I rarely get to open her up with todays traffic, but when I do and it hits +5000 revs its plenty fast.
@randomm User1237589 XD
Hi David,
I'm thinking to buy one for daily use. Please give me some feedback of the manual version, pros contras anything :) Thank you :)
Thinking of buying one, useful thank you
I am purchasing this exact car tomorrow! Hope you looked after it 😂 Decent review, looking forward to driving it.
This very same car?
@@HighPeakAutos yes, same reg plate!
So how is the car? I’m looking at these 😂
A good mate of mine has a 20 year old Celica and it drives incredibly well, and is very reliable. Goes like stink too. As ever, your reviews are always great, based on real understanding of the mechanicals and how cars work. (That said, I wouldn't have one. I'm a BOF, and like wallowy old hectors).
dude who buys this car with an automatic...
I got bored watching that kind of thing too. There are only so many unattainable supercar vids I can watch :)
You should send some of your videos to the BBC,as your vids are much more watchable than the rubbish that is top fear these days
Duncan Hutchison Thank you! Somebody else said I should do that too 👍🏻
If you live by Built not Bought then this is easily one of the greatest cars out right now.
Good genuine reviews keep them coming
Thanks!
Nice one. Another affordable review what the average man (or woman) could afford to buy.
Easy on the eye but I can’t help feeling it would have been a proper GT with a 2.5 or 3 litre lump in it. As it stands I think for money saving alone plus similar fun factor I’d opt for the MX5
It would be great with a V6!
Thats right! Good tip with the tyres too :)
Just been looking at these as a replacement for the rx8 and this pops up what a coincidence 👍
A supercharger is a great way to get another 100 BHP and, more importantly perhaps, boost the low to mid range torque. No need for any engine internals strengthening, con rods, clutch etc, with this level of power increase. I've not seen it done with the automatics though.
Does that start turning into the aforementioned death trap though?
I have a manual one, it just a pure drivers car, it's not happy in stop start traffic but on open country roads it's a joy to drive. Decided to get one before the fun police ban petrol cars. No regrets.
Boot isn't to bad, enough space for a weekend away at a nice hotel, dog isn't so happy sharing the footwell but...hey ho :)
While I don't like toyotas current fussy design styling at the moment. I do really like this little sports car. A good review
I have been looking forward to get home and watch this, WHAT A TREAT
I love this car, in my opinion it's one of the best sport cars design ever made
Hot,aggressive and affordable,
As expected great honest review nicely done, top class mate
Thanks for watching! I agree with you

No thank you for what do mate its truly unique and original,
Toyota need to give this GT the GR treatment they gave to the Yaris. Now that would be the best Toyota ever!
I was contemplating one of these until the supra came out and learned it had a b58 ever since then I looked at the M240i. You can pick one up for less than 20k and it’s got similar performance to the new 50k supra with the same engine. I’m looking to pick my M240i up next year.
Good choice :)
My next car for sure ! Lovely cars.
Subaru Impreza engine .
It's like the 21st Century's Porsche 944
Always a thumbs up from me Matt 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I do think that comment " If you have any negative comments keep um to yourself " was brilliant😁😁😁😁😁 and looking at the comments section it seems to have worked ( Masterstroke )
Haha yes it looks that way! :)
Gorgeous car that desperately needs aftermarket rims.
Brilliant review! Thanks a lot!
He sounds like he’s reciting a poem. Good review.
I subscribe when in one of your videos u mentioned about when automatic gear need to be serviced and check full service history if your buying a auto and check for clutch plate in manual. Please do that for every car. As what is the best milage or safest milage to buy the car as automatic or manual
Good revue - A great buy if you love a bumpy ride, loads of noisy engine and competitive priced tyres.
Haha yes exactly!
Reliable and good looking and affordable.
Have fun.
1carus John I am afraid the GT has gone, replaced with a new Subaru WRX STi ;) But my better half is talking about getting another GT, as a second car lol
@@Backs4more Fun all round then!
