In my opinion, the FR-S/GT86 doesn't need any boost, its almost there with the power, and it definitely doesn't need any suspension changes, the handling is perfect, it can take a mountain road like some of the newer corvettes I've driven. It just needs about 40-50 more HP and it'll be golden. Intake, exhaust a tune and maybe a cam.
I think the only reason as to why Toyota didn't release a more powerful version of the GT86 is because they want to leave a gap between their low cost sports car and the upcoming Supra (if it ever happens)

smgs921 I agree. I don't hate the GT86 it's just that I believe it will suffer the same fate as the Celica and MR2 because Toyota didn't learn why those cars stopped selling in their final years. I do love the look of both cars, but being 21, I don't think the insurance companies would be very happy with me driving a supercharged rear wheel drive coupe.
I switched out the Prius tires on my 2013 FR-S to the same size Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires. No more drifting like with the Prius tires, it just sticks in the corners like a banshee. As for more power, the GT-86/FR-S/BR-Z are all made in a Subaru factory in Japan, so why don't they put in the Subie 2.5L that comes in the Forester instead of the stock 2L and kick up the horsepower a notch? Seems logical to me.
guyfihi its market is as a cheap sports car, 2.5ltr would have higher fuel costs... i agree it is stupid, as with most modern subarus having a 'more fuel efficent' 2ltr instead of the old EJ25 2.5ltr as standard... nowadays if you want the more powerful 2.5ltr you've gotta get the STI impreza... when it used to be standard equipment on older soobys
***** They should at least offer more power as an option, see if it would sell. I don't think the FR-S is gutless, I mean 6.7 sec 0-60 at sea level with a stick isn't bad, it's just that a lot of family sedans like a Camry with a V-6 call pull that now. But if a person wants a straight line performance sports car better look at a V-6 Genesis, Mustang or Camaro. The handling of the FR-S is phenomenal though, especially with optional tires.
I would take smaller Turbo, you can make it really good for daily driving if properly tuned with 280-300 hp. The responsiveness is better and it climes the rpm’s evenly/smoothly if you don’t exaggerate the power and turbo size.
Guys, this is HKS V1 Supercharger that give 225 HP. There is now the V2 kit that give 250/260 HP with SP98 and the 38mm HKS restrictor. That can pass 300/340 HP with no restrictor (with you own risk) and E85.
Shid, I’d settle for a good 300whp lol. 350 or more and I may find myself not only getting into trouble but spending a lot more money than I’d like to admit….just yet at least 😅.
You could fly to Japan and import a clean silvia s15 spec r, ship it back, put some mods on it and still have money left, which looks better and much faster than a TRD...
I really enjoy your videos, i found the channel via the silly stuff (2 guys 1 car) and i stayed because your reviews, RR etc. are all really high quality stuff and i really enjoy them, keep it up.
i love a mercedes 190, that is like the ideal car for the quote "they don't make them like they used to"... my father bought one brand new in german and drove it to 400,000 miles (not KM) without a single mechanical problem
Ben Dover yep, that was the last Mercedes that designed for long life. Nowday's mercedes cars: if something goes wrong, the repairing bills are starting az 500$. I hate them... My dad and his brother had so many 190, and i could drive one, oh man, that feeling :D Much better than every other v8 shit :D
It's called a centrifugal supercharger. Looks the same as a turbo, but as above, it's belt driven. No lag giving it more driveability with power on demand, but of course it uses the power produced from the engine resulting in lower peak power.
Om, I know what a Supercharger is Chris, hence why I said "Ahh, thats a Turbo, not a Supercharger". Its a turbo in this, but I know the difference between the three types of turbos/superchargers. Lol. When their belt driven, they whine, in the case of Superchargers, but he actually mentions hearing it sucking in the air, which only happens with the Turbochargers ran off the exhaust lol.
There are actually people that argue giving this thing a TC/SC will screw up the handling or drivability. That doesn't make any sense, as long as you're not trying to make an absurd amount of HP. The car will still corner perfectly provided you know how to drive....
I still don't get why Toyota don't offer a more powerful GT86 as a production model. The car looks great but there are diesel hatches out there that will outperform it. HKS is the way to go! Although at 31 grand you can still get more power and RWD from a BMW 135i. It could still do with a bit more than 270bhp to seal the deal.
I really think a supercharger just isn't required on the 86. It's the perfect example where less is more. Everyone complains about being stuck at 3000rpm. Well.... you're in control of that thing! Try 7000rpm for a change.
From where I am, the TRD name is used for some "range topping" Yaris hatchback. With some bodykit and rice looking decals. No gain in power. Automatic only.
XeoKill I care since I am poor... lol If I were to buy a new car and it breaks down on me I definitely won't have the cash to fix it so yeah, a warranty on a new car is a must for me
HaloToday bro the HKS is the version of 86 supercharge... By mean, its not a mod car, its come stock with supercharged if you buy the Supercharged version...
Whats the point with supercharger? Isnt a turbo so much better as it can actually LOWER your fuel consumption and not increase it like sup-charger does
turbo doesn't lower fuel consumption... in fact it raises it more than a supercharger would. why turbos are fuel efficient is because you can have a smaller engine with the same power. so putting turbos on an existing engine does not increase the fuel economy... back to your main point. there is no point for super charges. they should die, everything should be turbo'd. i want a turbo on my blender....
Turbos are better for high end power due to them needing to take time to spool up and provide boost whereas supercharges are better for lower end power
Mortalomena super charger = more immediate power at your disposal turbine = more efficient method of increasing power/ often makes hissing noises thats pretty much a basic break down
Mortalomena i heard its because when you want to go hard into a corner you dont want a turbo to spool up and a supercharger lets you have power that you can predict.
Supercharger gives you more instant power, there is no lag like a lot of turbos have aka turbo lag, it doesn't over heat like turbos tend to do with heavy use and there much more reliable.. I'd take a supercharger any day over a turbo.. U don't have to waste time building up boost the power is always there with a supercharger.. There are MUCH more benefits of superchargers than turbos
Who do I contact and does it include internal components to handle the extra power and how has the other parts been taking the extra power? Does it burn oil?
I still dont get it, why some GT86 owners wants more power??? dont they know that GT86 in its stock setting is already a factory-made drift car? balance engine power, suspension setting, THE PRIUS TIRES, its entire weight, its transmission, all of it are basically balanced to be a drift car. One theory is that, GT86 is the re-incarnated Toyota Corolla Trueno GT Apex 86' model, in other words, the hachiroku. Clarkson already made a review of GT86 in one of their films, Worst car in the world.
The 86 and FR-S are the same car, dude.lol just a different name for a different country. Just like the Lexus SC400 in the US, is called a Toyota Soarer in other countries.
GHOS7v its called a Toyota-scion-subaru alliances.. its ther project together... Use the same platform, scion are more into US market, Toyota more than UK market and Subaru more into Asia market.. yes you can find this all model but it will be in different prices.. Subaru brz have a little bit extra on engine, its have mix around with WRX shaft ( i guess) but when come to Technology , Gt86 win
you speak of the HKS kit not doing much down low ... yeah, its a centrifugal kit. If you went for the Edelbrock twin screw kit for around the same price, you would've gotten the down low grunt you expected from a supercharger; which also happens to enhance the power band where most people use it most of the time. Seems to me, besides lag, the HKS kit would be better replaced with a turbo kit for the high rpm power.
Honda S2000 has 250bhp Rwd with a 9k RPM as standard and you can get a decent one for around 6k add a few mods and you have a beast for so little cash it makes the GT86's 30k+ price tag a total joke.
Forgive me for not understanding the appeal of the GT86, it's just not fast enough for my tastes... Prefer to buy an almost new 370z for that money, or a decent 350z and spend the rest on fuel :D
I don't know where you're at, but a Z in America costs quite a bit more than an 86. You also don't get the insurance seats so that factors into higher premiums. The car is an everyday sports car to have fun zipping around in. It's more meant to appeal to the miata crowd than anything, really. Z's are nice cars and what a lot of people do to their car puts it into Z price territory, but some more like to customize the platform than just buy it from a dealer. I got an 86 because it was fun to drive, super affordable, and pretty decent on gas. Getting 35 mpg on the highway and still being able to have some safe fun driving around town is a nice combo. It also goes fast enough to get you a speeding ticket, so really it doesn't *need* to be any faster for an everyday driver.
Like ein311 said... lots of people would prefer buying parts for the brz/frs/gt86 and make it their personal work of art compared to a factory vehicle. Also this means that their "project" car still has better fuel economy in most cases. There is also the car club credo "built not bought" of you know what i mean but i mean thats just what i can pick up on from my point of view and infact if you use non-branded or lower brand products which most of the time are equally as good you can get results for even cheaper.
ein311 You realize any car could get you a speeding ticket? The stock GT86 feels slower than my mums Civic. Just plain boring if you don't live near mountains or nice corners.
Husam Hammadi Yea, which is why the whole "MOAR POWAR!!" thing is really pointless for anyone that does all of their driving on public roads. Passing power is nice, but you don't need 400hp to do that. Different people have different tastes in their cars. If you're happy driving around a fwd shoebox, then go for it.
Toyota and subaru's mentality was to first succeed in selling as many cars as possible around the world with the least amount of fuss .that would accommodate both male and female drivers, and all age brackets which would keep the insurance and the overall cost of the car to a minimum and in turn generate maximum sales forcasts. They succeeded with flying colours in this venture .But why in gods name did they fail to capitalize on say a third version of the car like a GTS-R version that would have covered all the bases and increased sales even more and in turn kept the purist's super happy as well .Imagine a 250 kw version like a rex or evo for around 50 to 60 grand. This in rear wheel drive would have ......OH WAIT THE FUCKERS ARE LEAVING THIS SPACE FOR POSSIBLY THE NEW SUPRA. That's why japanese car manufacturers are no better than there western counterparts, because greed is more important to them these days than what they usaully are known for.BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. Later.
jose jalapenho I think your missing the point.japanese cars are the best in the world.I own a gt 86 and am super happy with my 143 kw.Im sick of these new age hipster jokester's thinking their golf R is a better car than a gt 86 at twice the price. All it has is more horsepower.Hence toyota put a supercharger or turbo on the 86 and sell it for ten to 15 grand less than a golf and watch vw go out of business. Whose running these companies.Turbo's cost car companies like 350 bucks for one unit. For gods sake bolt them on and put Porsche out of business cos its not rocket science
Those brakes seem wayy overkill for a car with such little power and weight. Those are the type of brakes i would like on my supra. This car looks great with em but the brakes just couldn't be used to their potential even if you tried. But yeah i think the TRD gt86 with the super charger would be amazing. I do like turbocharded ones better but i have heard they suffer from heatsoak. either way.... boost is just what a subaru motor deserves.
Im really surprised Subaru haven't an sti turbo version of this car, even Toyota's old 3sgte would have been great in this car,i guess well have to wait for the new Supra for some real Toyota power in a 3 door rear drive coupe.
Was that even a question which one is better? I did not even know who HKS were, I only knew they were in NFS and from the moment I saw their logo I knew this is a serious company.
I am doing my best to push The Company for a factory Supercharger, as they have one for the car in development. I am pleased enough that they did in fact improve the car in ways of handling. I went my way to send Scion/Toyota a couple of hints of what could be improved on the vehicle. as I am happy they released a new sports car. (at least) Any remarks on improvement write on my wall!!
With the standards for today's cars, people look for sheer numbers more than what originally made us love cars, the fun of it. sure, it's not very appealing on paper, and yes, because of today's prices, it is just as pricey as the much faster car. but toyota was a brand made for fun daily drivers. When they really make fast cars, its iconic, but that's not their target for the gt86. They made this in mind where it would be ultimately fun on track, but also modular, jdm brands like toyota and honda are known for their easy modularity, meaning the owner can do what he feels, many cars come out with such complicated designs, this one does not. People enjoy what they enjoy, don't take it away because of your beliefs
The TRD is pretty but is just pretty much riced up, the boosted one is sick, but the exhaust on the trd would do a better Justice on the boosted one. They need to make a turbo frs
I hope a larger high flow radiator is included with the HKS kit. Without it you wont be making more power for long. On a hot day the stock radiator has a difficult time keeping up with cooling the sock 200 hp engine.
In any case, I'd buy a e36-e46 m3 over this any day (even if it's a bit shaggy like the blue one you showed us, more than enough money left over to bring it back to full song and then some).
i reckon this car isn't made for power, its made so you can have fun on the streets without crashing so you can push it 10/10... handling, balance, and fun comes to mind, power would just overwhelm the chassis

Seems logical to me.
guyfihi or jdm sti engine...
Rory MacKay
Yes exactly, it's a mystery to me.
guyfihi
its market is as a cheap sports car, 2.5ltr would have higher fuel costs...
i agree it is stupid, as with most modern subarus having a 'more fuel efficent' 2ltr instead of the old EJ25 2.5ltr as standard... nowadays if you want the more powerful 2.5ltr you've gotta get the STI impreza... when it used to be standard equipment on older soobys
That Trd body kit is tacky literally...like a tack on after-thought.
But it looks great haha, and that's all that matters imo
Guys, this is HKS V1 Supercharger that give 225 HP. There is now the V2 kit that give 250/260 HP with SP98 and the 38mm HKS restrictor. That can pass 300/340 HP with no restrictor (with you own risk) and E85.
I'm quite frustrated with the fact that they call that a supercharger.
We desperately need a different name for it.
hectorae86 how about a Centrifugal type supercharger and not just say supercharger?
Its a great looking car imo and to be fair, it may not have the power it's deprived of, but its still a fun coupé
Just drop the hks kit onto the trd body and bam you got a good looking quick gt86
for close to $40k. smh for that price buy a 370Z new with LSD and run laps around the gt86
For 40k I'd just get or boxster or something or project a mr2 etc
You could get a supra for the price of a gt86 by itself
This thing with 400 hp must be a huge blast... Its so light and nimble
Shid, I’d settle for a good 300whp lol. 350 or more and I may find myself not only getting into trouble but spending a lot more money than I’d like to admit….just yet at least 😅.
what about the TRD-LZR?
+brunoignaciogi LOL!
it would amaze ya'
bringin' back the full ricey flavour
The race instagater
If they combined the TRD looks with the hks performance it would be spot on!
You could fly to Japan and import a clean silvia s15 spec r, ship it back, put some mods on it and still have money left, which looks better and much faster than a TRD...
your on my level. even a toyota chaser 1jz TRD tourer V with a few bits and bobs could eat this
Gt86 was never meant to have alot of horses or go fast in the straight it's just meant to to be pure rwd turning joy
Just buy the TRD and install the HKS supercharger kit. Win-win on performance and appearance.
+Idtelos Or just buy a Honda S2000 instead... ;)
+TassieLorenzo no
AkaraFTW Or a Mazda RX-7 instead ;(((((
Or a HKS supercharger with a Rocket bunny kit
The reason you buy a 86 is to tune or have fun the car is built for tuning look at it lightweight rwd and easy to tune engine thank the toyota gods
I really enjoy your videos, i found the channel via the silly stuff (2 guys 1 car) and i stayed because your reviews, RR etc. are all really high quality stuff and i really enjoy them, keep it up.
6k seems steep for brakes exhaust and a body kit
Wait, the rest is all stock? Transmission, connecting rods, pistons? Everyting stock and holds 270hp with no issues?
Which Should I Buy? Mercedes 190.
E30... M50b25 can be easily tuned to ~700hp...
Paveseikkailija You must be a Master tuner to pull that off! Yay for random UA-cam car Gurus!
ImSofaxxKingBad No need to be a master tuner, but it requires quite much skill and even more money.
i love a mercedes 190, that is like the ideal car for the quote "they don't make them like they used to"... my father bought one brand new in german and drove it to 400,000 miles (not KM) without a single mechanical problem
You forgot to mention the BRAKES on the TRD. It's the first thing you notice on the images. Big fucken slotted discs with big calipers.
+papapetad oh ok here come the brakes at 3.30...and they're optional which explains the initial description. Nevermind then.
Not too troll but...isn't that a Turbocharger, and not a Supercharger? Looks like a turbo from here...
And you are talking about suction noise, that only comes with Turbos. Superchargers have a whine, not a scooping-of-air sound.
Yeah its a turbo
Jacobi Sparks lol a supercharger is a turbo run off a belt and not exhaust gasses. thats a supercharger. Philip Lotto look it up
It's called a centrifugal supercharger.
I say but the TRD. and the reason why is because of resale value. limited numbers means you'll get most of your money back if you sale it.
+turshin too bad there is no market for this car.
+soundseeker63 because power only isnt the anwser. the GT86 is a very good cornering vehicle. great for driving in the hills or forest roads.
+DevasionX lol under power isn't the answer either at least offer at 240hp version it would help out so much
+DevasionX of course not but 200HP is way to under rated 260 should a be a much better number from the factory.
I really think a supercharger just isn't required on the 86. It's the perfect example where less is more. Everyone complains about being stuck at 3000rpm. Well.... you're in control of that thing! Try 7000rpm for a change.
Toyota has been gone for a while. The name TRD is gone, the name TRD is just for marketing purpose for kid.
Denracer yeah bro trd is just for suspension, body kit and exhaust in Indonesia many car using TRD brand name but its just for a city car shit
Denracer well there's at least some decent upgrades. Not a total waste but it doesn't make sense to get the trd anymore
From where I am, the TRD name is used for some "range topping" Yaris hatchback. With some bodykit and rice looking decals. No gain in power. Automatic only.
Gazoo Racing is the "new TRD"
4:55, that bug got so lucky on that road.
Does the HKS super charger kit void the factory warranty?
+HaloToday Yes.
who cares about a damn warranty when you can run 10's in the quarter
XeoKill I care since I am poor... lol If I were to buy a new car and it breaks down on me I definitely won't have the cash to fix it so yeah, a warranty on a new car is a must for me
HaloToday bro the HKS is the version of 86 supercharge... By mean, its not a mod car, its come stock with supercharged if you buy the Supercharged version...
you mean to tell me that "Car Throttle" isn't just some guy at home making top 10 videos?
+Ben Dover Not sure... :) Doesn't matter really.
Mortalomena super charger = more immediate power at your disposal
turbine = more efficient method of increasing power/ often makes hissing noises
thats pretty much a basic break down
Mortalomena i heard its because when you want to go hard into a corner you dont want a turbo to spool up and a supercharger lets you have power that you can predict.
Damn I want the hks. Not that the car isn't fine now I just want it really really bad. 😒
The answer is Rocket Bunny kit
I love this , watched many , many times, great review , and yes this car deserves a supercharger! I have one on mine and boy oh boy does it go!
ill go for HKS
Its a belt driven supercharger. Looks like a Turbo but has a belt that connects to the crankshaft
2020 Toyota supra BMW engine Vs Custom swapped 2JZ
I like the thought of putting super chargers into 86s, but in the end 86s were made for handling, not for power
An HKS with a TRD rear spoiler would be my choice. The full bodykit looks just a bit too silly.
I still panic when I see oncoming traffic in these videos. I always forget that you guys are supposed to drive on the left side.
wait wait, so theres the scion frs, toyota 86 and subaru's brz? wow....
The 86 and FR-S are the same car, dude.lol just a different name for a different country. Just like the Lexus SC400 in the US, is called a Toyota Soarer in other countries.
steven weber I know, Its just a bit of a shock to me. Seems like a bad marketing move.
+GHOS7v Kinda like the Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice, Opel GT
GHOS7v its called a Toyota-scion-subaru alliances.. its ther project together... Use the same platform, scion are more into US market, Toyota more than UK market and Subaru more into Asia market.. yes you can find this all model but it will be in different prices.. Subaru brz have a little bit extra on engine, its have mix around with WRX shaft ( i guess) but when come to Technology , Gt86 win
I've seen the Greddy Turbo kit which boosts the GT86's power from 197/200hp to 350hp
How about the Rocket Bunny GT86.
I would get the HSK. But if it was up to me on the brand of the supercharger I would get a Vortech one. The whine is what makes it special.
For real power kicks in you'll need to look elsewhere - VTEC yo!
you speak of the HKS kit not doing much down low ... yeah, its a centrifugal kit.
But I'd prefer a turbo...
Can't wait to buy one of these!
hks look a lot better
ur funny
+Meth Jayasekera I agree with him
thas ur opinion Ayrton Bondzanga
Meth Jayasekera no shit
I think he should have brought a HKS GT86 with a Rocket bunny kit
Honda S2000 has 250bhp Rwd with a 9k RPM as standard and you can get a decent one for around 6k add a few mods and you have a beast for so little cash it makes the GT86's 30k+ price tag a total joke.
"Ders a soopachargar"
c:
Like this video more than the newer ones
Forgive me for not understanding the appeal of the GT86, it's just not fast enough for my tastes... Prefer to buy an almost new 370z for that money, or a decent 350z and spend the rest on fuel :D
any Z = win.
The Car can handle it, you can handle it, love those words!!!
Later.
they made better cars so they deserve the money. greed is german cars, they are expensive and they suck.
jose jalapenho I think your missing the point.japanese cars are the best in the world.I own a gt 86 and am super happy with my 143 kw.Im sick of these new age hipster jokester's thinking their golf R is a better car than a gt 86 at twice the price.
FUCKING BUY TRD WITH HKS SUPERCHARGER #richlyfe
Correction. What’s the BRZ/86 needed is an H6.
The irony that the one with no power change is the one with quad exhausts...
I want the looks of the TRD, with the performance of the HKS one
at 2:17 that would be perfect if that exhaust sound and music were fused together.
TRD for looks, HKS for the power. add them together and you'll never get tried of the GT86 (FRS in the states)
Im really surprised Subaru haven't an sti turbo version of this car, even Toyota's old 3sgte would have been great in this car,i guess well have to wait for the new Supra for some real Toyota power in a 3 door rear drive coupe.
Ronan Mc Namee speaking of, BRZ STI is being unveiled at Tokyo Motor Show
Was that even a question which one is better? I did not even know who HKS were, I only knew they were in NFS and from the moment I saw their logo I knew this is a serious company.
Take the TRD design, wheels, brakes, and exhaust and combine with HKS performance
(Discussion Section)
There is an 86 with a huge turbo that makes 700+hp somewhere in Japan
The best combination: TRD bobykit and wheels and HKS performance plus make it black
i need 1 of these in my life.. 1 of these days when i finally make it big...or in 10-15 years of saving, ill get one
Have you made it yet? XD
With the reviewer on this, give me the TRD looks with the HKS power. Please.
2:12 - Needs a stabilizer bar for the engine to avoid some massive weight shifts due to the shaky engine
Love the 86! Good video.
In any case, I'd buy a e36-e46 m3 over this any day (even if it's a bit shaggy like the blue one you showed us, more than enough money left over to bring it back to full song and then some).
papapetad maintenance boy... If you can afford the maintenance , gas mileage and service, then you can have your own e46
You could surely buy a combination of both kits from the companies? So TRD handling and the supercharger?
Can you post up the video of the raw sound? The music and talking overwhelms the sounds of the cars.
Why not do a 2jz swap?
And if you have extra money add a intercooler, twin turbos, and a new exhaust
i reckon this car isn't made for power, its made so you can have fun on the streets without crashing so you can push it 10/10...
handling, balance, and fun comes to mind, power would just overwhelm the chassis
