As a GT86 owner myself, I think the problem with Ben's launches is that TC was not fully off, so the computer kept cutting power in the wet. When you press the TC off button once, it only turns off part of the TC (which is what Ben did). To further disable control, you will need to hold the button for 3 sec. And for older model such as the one in this video, you will need to do the pedal dance to fully turn off all electronic control (except for ABS).
i leased one for three years and put an hks air filter in it and some stickier tires, it was the most reliable and fun car i have owned, but the interior was kinda dull, i preferred when i upgraded to a gti, but i couldn't drift the gti like i could my scion fr-s(gt86)
The GT deserves respect in terms of reviving the original 86 but the GR gets the most respect as the performance is what the 86 should be in terms of today’s standards.

I mean, the GR86 also deserves a credit. After a struggle to beat it's competition for years the GR nailed it now. Even the GT can't keep up with the elder.
GR86 is a great car and we all knew which car was going to come 1st 2nd and 3rd in the race. The AE86 honestly is the underdog in the race. I am impressed.
Track mode on the GR86 does not disable traction control, it allows for more wheel spin before cutting in. The stability program light comes on to indicate it’s not at its full potential and will allow the slide more before acting. Considering Ben gets a rubbish launch every time he drives a car on this channel, we definitely need to see a car swap to prove if it's the driver in one of these...is the Stig just rubbish at launching? I mean, it's not a main skill for him whereas launching cars is basically the only skill the Carwow team need most of the time!

That AE86 is an excellent car even if it’s not fast and it’s overpriced due to being featured in Initial D. Even though it’s “just” an 80s Japanese econobox, it looks good, sounds good and has an amazing design. In a car like that, it’s about how many smiles per gallon it’s capable of. And who doesn’t love some good ole pop up headlights?
i agree, trap speed showcases the car's ability better and takes less of the skill out of the equation so we have a better idea of which car is faster.
That GR 86 is just so amazing! I know without the GT 86 there would be no GR 86, but the GR 86 seems like the TRUE modern AE86 but really I love them all, Toyota's 86 is my favorite line of cars ever. 🥰❤️

Just an Idea for future races. Maybe try changing the lanes where each car is between launches in the initial drag race. It will help us see if maybe the tarmac has anything to do with the times.

Im from Australia and have ordered the new GR86, the aussies were late to the party, wasn't able to even order one till September last year. And 12month wait 😅. I managed to test drive both BRZ and GR86, found the 86 spoke to me more although maybe some bias as i work at a Toyota dealership. My first and current cars are Subaru's, still a subie fan. Also, I have a motorcycle now too.
Yea I’m in Australia, I’m a mechanic at a dealership. I’ve seen one GR86 on back of a truck and one on the streets. Yet I’ve seen probably like 30+ of the BRZ’s
The reason the GT86 sounded better to Ben is that there is a resonator in the car from the engine to make it sound better for the passengers in the cabin. A bit of a cheat, but still real engine noise, manually tuned and piped into the cabin.
If you get a 20v in a ae86 you have to upgrade you transmission then ... i had 20v with stock tranny and it really lower the 20v potential , i mean , my bluetop with little work on the head was faster than my 20v coz of 5 speed
From a fellow GT86 owner, you need 6000rpm to properly launch the car from that 2L because of the peak torque from the curve. Below that is the famous torque dip which you get nothing if you start off from there.
As an owner pf GR 86 I want to thank car wow for making interesting race videos with GR86, I will consider selling my car to you if I ever decide to sell it in the future.

I've been fortunate enough to have owned all 3 generations of this car. AE86 coupe when I was 18. GT86/FRS back when it first came out in 2013. And a year ago I bought the GR86.
Love the AE86 and would have one over the new ones. The 4A-GE is a peach of an engine and was in the MK 1 MR2 I had and was a proper screamer mounted behind your head. More old school Toyotas please.
Very impressive how a fourty year old car can properly keep up with the modern ones. That shows how rightfully a classic the AE86 design really is. Not sure if it would be this close on a dry drag or circuit race though.
My father had that same AE86 Trueno with 124 hp in white back in the 90s. It was a real sports car for that time and the pop up head lights were really cool and rare. 🤘 I would not forget that soft bell sound it made inside the cabin when going over certain high speed 😄
What a surprise, a 2.4 is quicker than a 2 litre & a 1.6, I bet also that the TC is not fully off on the gt86. But in all honesty, what you did was put a souped up gt86 up against a standard gt86, there was only going to be one winner, as for the Ae86 why wasn't that put up against RWD mkV Corolla too, then you would see some comparisons.
Would anyone else also choose hands down the AE86 over both the other cars... I think it held its own pretty well against the much more modern stuff! Love it. Edit: (I'd probably upgrade the brakes though)
