Hands down THE best car I have ever driven in my life! And I've driven cars way more powerful than this...but power doesn't actually matter...fun is what matters
Every car has its own purpose. Every performance car has its own approach to "fun". A sports car relies on handling, feel, balance, tossability, and a direct connection to the road. The S2000 had that. The Elise had that. The first two generations of the Miata had that. The Toyobaru triplets had that. For me, any approach to "fun" has value. Hell, I even enjoyed tossing around my first new car, an obscenely simple '92 Nissan Sentra E, with its 13" wheels, manual everything, and power nothing. It was FUN. If I'm to drive a muscle car or pony car, I want tire-melting burnouts, loud growling engine notes, and room for some friends. If I'm to drive a Grand Tourer, I want legs for days, power to spare, and room for some overnight bags and some golf clubs. If I'm to drive a supercar, I want to be looked at and I want to scare myself with more power and sharper turning than I could ever handle. If, however, I want a car that feels like every ride on the playground, at any speeds, then I'll drive a sports car. The BRZ/FRS/86 is one of those cars, and it's a great one at that.
indeed: time on tracks, winning race, and efficient driving is totally boring and absolutely no fun. Sadly, race/sport cars are evaluated on this shit. Like driving a train is boring, even if an empty TGV can easily go at more than 500 km/h. (more than 310 mph). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_speed_record TGV 4402 (operation v150) reaching 574.8 km/h (357 mph)
Alejandro Vega I’ve had my twin for 5 years, fully paid off and I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it. I daily a G37 coupe now, but my BRZ will probably always stick around.
Serious question: How are they on mountain roads? Asking because I live in the mountains, and sometimes passing uphill is a must, but not every car can do it fast and reliably. Nothing worse than trying to get by a logging truck or tanker when you run out of "umph" and have to get back behind it or hope to hell nothing is coming from over the other side.

@@jpcrafton69 I'm 54. I test drove a 2016 Scion tC a few weeks ago while shopping around for a "plague" car that I could drive around just for fun while remaining socially distant from others. It felt like the rentals I would drive to work sites, a feeling I DON'T want to experience in my own car! I bought a 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth instead.
Perfect. I remember hearing about the sales numbers from the first-gen Scions. Low price, high efficiency, good quality=LOTS OF OLD PEOPLE BOUGHT THEM. 😂 Remember old folks are on fixed incomes, can’t afford expensive cars, are sensible and wise and know where the tontine gold is buried and most of all, love Scions.
Its odd that a comparative small coup, the Mazda MX-5, could go generations with very nominal changes in power and still be loved, while the 86 receives criticism for it.
Many people say the Miata is a hairdresser's car, while many other people say "Miata Is Always The Answer." It gets it's share of criticism, but it's old enough that the consistency in it's design philosophy is part of the love, and the bulk of the power-critics have probably gone on to looking at different cars instead. Meanwhile, the GT86 is much newer, and the big boys behind the engine (Subaru) love juggling turbos so much that everyone is wondering how one hasn't accidentally fallen into the BRZ yet. I would love mine to have a turbo, but the car is already such a nice drive that it'd sort of be a waste.
Case of bias before trying. I would gather 95% of those who hammer on the car have never actually driven one at all or for its intended purpose. Meanwhile in the twisty b-roads I can guarantee every owner is grinning ear to ear. Haters gonna hate.
@@lucsmith3953 driven hard the g35 will feel heavy, and go through tires, brakes and fuel much faster than an 86. Also it will struggle much quicker with engine overheating. It all depends on what kind of driving you like. If it helps: when you don't see the issue with putting 19 inch wheels on an 86, then the g35 is the right choice.
That really does sum up the 86. It's not fast, its times are garbage, it's not even the slickest car in the lot. But when you get in it and drive, you'll love it, I swear. Finally! Thank you for doing this video! I’ve had a turbo in my BRZ for 5 years now, putting out 275whp, I couldn’t ever go back to NA. It should’ve come with FI from the factory, it didn’t upset weight distribution at all.
Gustavo Salgado It’s a SBD kit (the Greddy knock-off). Winter mix fuel causes an O2 sensor warning every winter but the actual sensor is fine. I always run 93 octane, E85 stations are hard to find in my city. I think the winter O2 sensor issue is probably an OFT problem, I should’ve gotten EcuTek. So I reset the ECU once a month in winter. No issues aside from that annoyance. IMO getting it tuned by a great pro-tuner is the biggest factor in reliability. I’m going to have him retune it using EcuTek and see if the winter O2 sensor problem goes away.
I just turbo’ed my BRZ about a month or so ago. Full Blown Motorsports Stage 2 kit, definitely made a huge difference! lol currently pushing way too much boost at 14 PSI, gonna drop it down to 10 PSI soon 😌
I REALLY liked my 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. The biggest problem I had with it was that it was FWD (and heavy, but ignore that). The 86 really seems like the best version of my old Eclipse that I can imagine. Now that I'm no longer a young naive budget "sports car" owner with shallow pockets I REALLY want to become a slightly older budget "sports car" owner with much deeper pockets. Kudos Toyota, you're still killing it! Also, "Hearse Purrs!" lol
I had a 2000 Celica GT-S and the valve program wouldn’t kick in. Spent nearly $1000 at the Toyota dealership to no avail. Turns out it was a simple fix, but this wasn’t known at the time (internet forums were in their infancy)
@@joaquinvillasenor4818 I feel like the drift King was just drives the 86 because he loves the car. Cars don't have to be amazing for you to love them, you just have to bond with them. I feel like they could have as easily liked the Miata or s2000. This is purely speculation on my part.
I literally sold my Evo X GSR because after I drove my dad's 2013 FRS and felt more connected to a car that was so much easier to operate and drive, that I had to get in line for the new GR86 even if I have to wait months to get it.
Honestly I like the slow & simple starting point of these cars. It allows a young driver to learn and grow with their car. A friend of a friend put in flexfuel mods to his BRZ first, and as he got used to the power he then got the HKS turbo kit bolted on. 290 kW (~400 hp) in such a light package! Not something you can just buy and drive without any experience...
The 86 doesn't need more power, I have a FR-S and I can redline with no problem. You never redline with a v6, v8, i6, or i8 cuz you will lose control. The 86 uses the whole engine efficiently, there is no way tou can do that with a faster car unless you are on the track.
Yeah, thats definitely not true. I have an S4(supercharged V6, 6spd manual) and i often redline it without losing control. Power isnt just about racing either. It affects driveability in everyday situations. When you have to redline the motor to pass someone on a freeway or going up a hill, that car is underpowered.
So happy for this episode. I’ve had my FR-S since 2014 and buying this car is one of best decisions I’ve ever made in life. As an avid autocrosser since buying the car I believe I understand Tada-San’s reluctance I add power and I’m still happy with my fun [slow] car. Excited about the rumors for the 2nd gen though!
I bought my 86 and a couple of years through ownership, I turbo'd the car. Small turbo (basically the same as the WRX now), but my god, it makes the car SOOO much better. No more annoying torque dip, nicer power out of corners, its just *MUAHH*. It's a shame they never brought the car out with a factory turbo, even as a separate model.
Scion was such a great brand. Still proudly rolling my 06 tC that I got when I was 19. First and only brand new car I've ever purchased. Served its purpose to introduce younger buyers to the Toyota brand, as I've had 2 4Runners and a Tundra since!
As Ryoske Takahashi said; "You should remember that, at times, you need less horsepower to run faster. That's how deep street racing is. The key to downhill success isn't power, it's balance."
_"More Horsepower makes you faster in straights. Lightness makes you faster everywhere."_ *-Lotus probably? I don't know who really said it tbh. I just heard it*
Honestly, I’m thankful it doesn’t have a turbo. Naturally aspirated engines just feel so much nicer to drive. I don’t know how to explain it, but some people will get it
The episode I wanted for so long!! I own one and have been driving it for 3 years, every-single-time I drive it I love it. It’s just so fun and nice to drive
Super underrated car. There is no better chassis/suspension that you can get for the price. It's a jdm car that you can buy on every continent. It's meant to be unfinished. It's meant to be tuned or engine swapped. I've got an 86 with 30k miles only cost 16k. I could put 5 k into this car make it equal or better than a 40k sports car. This car with 300 whp is pretty much excellent
@@RobBroderick44 point being why should i spend 40k for a new car when my prelude thats 21 years old has the same amount of power and its payed for with 80k miles on it. the FRS would be cool if it had a turbo and like 100 more horsepower.
in a interview with tada, he said that having a turbo on the car would completely change the price of the car. you will need a better part on the car, better tire, better brake, better suspension ect. all this coming from a manufacturer will be very expensive. we fall into the prices of a sti practically. It's not what Toyota wanted
More power is great if you get a kick out of blasting out of a standing start or getting really lose around corners. If you want to really hone some driving skills, less power is actually better. It means you have to make every corner perfect and hold as much speed as possible as it takes longer to build it back up again. You'll learn how to drive perfect lines and make sure each gear-change uses the most of what you've got and don't allow the revs in the next gear to fall too far below where the power is. I drove an auto one a while back and felt it was great, but would be even better with a turbo or supercharger. Then got to think about it more. 200HP is pretty good really! They run a racing class for them in New Zealand, with only suspension mods so you really need to drive well to win anything. So, I get where they're coming from now! :)
I have put over 40k miles on my 2019 86gt in 1st year. LOVE IT. ...but... Passing on the hightway is a no go. Or just slow. Too low power to pass essily, safely. Otherwise, plenty of power to cruise, gets great mileage, and hits curves without slowing down. I get more compliments on the 86 than both my C5 & C6 put together. Just 30 to 50 more hp, and fix stupid "dip" would be very nice. Better headers help from what I understand.
@@shawnmiranda Great! Thanks! I am making notes right now. Yeah. Knew headers helped a lot. Just waiting for more income I guess. So the intake is a great idea for now!
Ayyy, we've got similar taste. I had a 2014 C7 and it would just attract douchebags and homeless people begging for money (seriously). With my 2018 brz, it's not as fancy or nearly as fast but the car is still very fun. I can play around with it but don't have to worry about dying in corners.
Shawn Miranda intakes are a waste of $ power wise for this platform.. plenty of tests on the forums to reflect this. The stock air box is very good, just grab a better filter. Put the money for an intake towards an OFT after header and exhaust.. no dip, extra 20-30 hp for relatively low cost.. To each their own though. Intake does add some cool induction sounds.
WOW! The Toyobaru is an amazing machine! Why have I not bought one yet! Awesome video guys! I watch every day and you all are pumping out the best automotive educational entertainment on the internet!
MX-5 is still there, along with the Fiat 124. Empty? No. And if you don't mind paying a bit more, you have a ton of options. Alfa Romeo 4C, Porsche Cayman, Lotus Elise/Exige, Nissan 370z, BMW 2-series, and Tesla Model C, for example. Seriously. Not empty in the least.
I also just love that people think calling them slow is this scathing criticism, like imagine my shock that the spiritual successor to a overglorified corolla is "slow". It was never a fast car. It was nimble and light and fun to drive, and... oh my! Look at that, the spiritual successor also directs towards those values. Crazy.
Love my 86. It's lightweight, manual transmission, great racing suspensions and it's RWD. Oh, it's modified to have 240 HP lol. Still, you can enjoy this car stock
Owned a BRZ and it spun bearing with 72k miles on the motor, powertrain warranty goes to 70k. Fa20 is not just underpowered it is a weak engine. I wouldn't be suprised if it ends up in a class action lawsuit like the sti motors.

Hands down THE best car I have ever driven in my life!
And I've driven cars way more powerful than this...but power doesn't actually matter...fun is what matters
Preach
Preach it brother
indeed: time on tracks, winning race, and efficient driving is totally boring and absolutely no fun.
Sadly, race/sport cars are evaluated on this shit.
Like driving a train is boring, even if an empty TGV can easily go at more than 500 km/h. (more than 310 mph).

Finally! Thank you for doing this video! I’ve had a turbo in my BRZ for 5 years now, putting out 275whp, I couldn’t ever go back to NA. It should’ve come with FI from the factory, it didn’t upset weight distribution at all.
Have you had any issues? What brand did you get
Gustavo Salgado It’s a SBD kit (the Greddy knock-off).

the early 2000s concept cars are so funny to me, I love how they make them so extremely futuristic

Headers and a tune and Dip is gone, unfortunately for more power/Tq only way with this engine is to FI or E85
@@shawnmiranda Great! Thanks! I am making notes right now. Yeah. Knew headers helped a lot. Just waiting for more income I guess. So the intake is a great idea for now!
