I love when you closed your eyes to just listen and feel the music. I just read a quote that said back in the day music was for closing your eyes and enjoying. I shared a special bond with my dad growing up and it was one of the bands that really brought us together. I still listen to their songs and I instantly remember my dad. It makes me smile. My dad past away 6 years ago to lung cancer. So thankful for great music. It really does feed the soul. Being from Arkansas I have a huge appreciation for southern rock and blues.
This track was in heavy rotation on DC FM stations after the 9/11 attacks. That was a Tuesday, it was a morning. It just somehow fit. A lot of people were in pain, disbelief. The mournful tone worked for a many listeners.
Thank you man, Skynyrd is truly a universal band, full of real life, and death, just like the band, glory and tragedy, but life through it all. Train...roll...on.......my baby's gone with the wind...yes he is....
So glad you're going down this path. I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert 5 times (not all the original band members... I was born in '79'). Still some of the best live concert moments I've had.
I saw them December 28, 1998 with Charlie Daniels Band at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Never got to see Ronnie as I was born in 78 but I'll never forget it. Anyone that doesn't know how Ronnie saved the Fox Theatre should look it up...
Yes there is soul in southern rock. Same as the soul in RnB/hip hop. It all comes from the blues. No matter what side of the tracks, whatever style you gravitated towards, we can all get down and relate to the blues my friend😊
"Tuesday is gone" and you can't do it over again. Whatever you did not do, is haunting you. Lost a person and wasted the day, but another week will come on Monday. Such poetry, is amazing.
Yes there definitely is “soul” rock, we just call it southern rock and it’s absolutely beautiful What he means by Tuesday and my baby is gone with the wind is, Sunday Monday and Tuesday he would be home with his woman but come Weds he was back on the road to play music.....he wants the clock to stop so he can be with his lady!! The life of a traveling musician, Lynyrd Skynyrd were AMAZING musicians
Southern Rock has a lot of SOUL AND BLUES INTERTWINED IN THE MUSIC AND LYRICS...EVEN THE VOICES AND HARMONY.... WE SOUTHERNERS ARE A LOT MORE COMPLICATED AND FEEL THINGS DEEPER THAN A LOT OF THE U.S.A. BUT IT'S IN A GOOD WAY.... WE HAVE HEART HERE AND LOVE AND LOYALTY.... GOD BLESS THE SOUTH FOREVER.... AMEN...🙏❤️
For me this has always been one of those songs that just makes you wanna hop in your ride, get on the freeway, and just drive..... Was on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. Great movie, great songs!
First off I’m 50. I spent my entire life hearing these songs and never listening to them. I know this band well and their history. But never took the time to understand their songs. I know them word for word but never reflected on them. So I’ve had what we call a revelation and from here on out will understand and embrace these songs more tightly. Thank you my brother for opening my eyes and heart a little more. God bless you.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is Southern Fried Rock. Rock took influence from soul, gospel, blues, and a few other genres. Soulful rock ...Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, Queen. Bands with Keyboard solos: Queen, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Nightwish...there are many!
Ronnie van Zant was the lead singer. He died in the plane crash in 1977 along with guitarist/backing vocalist Steve Gaines and Steve's wife Cassie. Billy Powell was the amazing pianist/keyboardist. The guitarists usually stole the spotlight, but Powell got to show out on this one. And Tuesday is his baby. I have a cousin who is such a big Skynyrd fan he named his daughter Tuesday after this song. That's how much we love Skynyrd in the South.
Having grown up in the deep south in the seventies and eighties. I can say that the influence of soul, jazz, and blue's music are very strong on many southern rock as well as country artists that grew up in that Era. In the south of my childhood. Which in many areas was heavily depressed financially after poor trade decisions on the part of the government caused the oilfield work to bust and agriculture to be forced to nearly bankrupting most farmers. There were black musicians that toured the south and became highly popular. These musicians had an advantage over their white counterparts. Because they could go into any town and do three shows in that town. One in a predominantly black bar. One in a predominantly white bar. Then cap off with either a theater or arena show. So many of the kids who would grow up to become Southern Rock bands such as Lynard Skynard and country artists such as Conway Twitty, Chris Stapelton, Ronnie Milsap grew up listening to Ottis Redding, Percy Sledge, Clarence Carter, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Fats Domino, Aretha Franklin, Patty Labelle, Donna Summer, Ike & Tina Turner. Then add to that influence of the Swamp Pop bands and Zydeco such as Cookie and the Cupcakes and Boozoo Chavus coming out of South Louisiana and South Mississippi. Southern Rock and Country artists actually have a well rounded and diversified pool of musical influence to draw from.
I believe the most soulful rock band are the ones based in the deep southern blues. So many British legends were influenced by the blues legends. Southern rockers are great story tellers and musicians. Check out "The Legend of Curtis Loew" as Skynyrd pays tribute to a blues player who as a kid Ronnie watched playing the blue.
It’s a great song, but Curtis Loew was not a real person. “The Ballad of Curtis Loew” was just more of Ronnie Van Zandt’s artistic genius as a lyricist. The inspiration was pulled from several living people and places here on Jacksonville, Florida’s Westside where they grew up.
I don't know if I could pick one favorite song from Skynyrd. They all are pretty much perfect. Just it play, listen and enjoy. They will take you there
That was my Dad’s favorite song, it was played at his funeral. He was a lifelong friend and fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, he went to school with them at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL. To be his favorite song by them, you know it has to be a good one.
Southern Rock definitely. Ronnie Van Zant was the singer/ songwriter for this amazing iconic band. He passed alone with two other band members in Oct 1977. You might consider checking out the live version of Free Bird Oakland, Ca. July 1977. One of the most amazing live performances of all time. Just three months before the tragedy. Peace out ✌️
I'm actually gonna watch them play later this year I know its different with his brother but couldn't turn down watching them play with Metallica gonna be a good show
This is my favorite Skynyrd song. I remember the first time I heard it was the intro to Happy Gilmore when I was a kid. You will find that southern rock and outlaw country take a lot of inspiration from Blues.
Some people associate this song with “ Happy Gilmore,” but I will forever think about the movie “Dazed and Confused” with this song. There are a ton of songs off that soundtrack you would really enjoy: Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer Slow Ride - Foghat Highway Star - Deep Purple Stranglehold - Ted Nugent Low Rider - War Enjoy your reactions. Keep doing your thing!
Southern Rock is the balance between rock n roll, country and blues. Soul Rock. Ronnie Van Zant was the singer. one of the few who died in the plane crash 1977.
The 60s and 70s was the best time in history for music. They where actual artist and actually played their instruments. Not just pushing a button on a box to give them sounds. And as far as the "soul rock" Thats just how it was in the south back then.(Southern Rock)They put their heart and SOUL into their 🎶 🎵 🪕
Southern Rock is like a sub genre of Classic Rock. It is kind of a blend of screaming guitar Rock, emotional Soul, the faith and belief of Gospel, and all the heart of Country.
Hey Van, lots of rock bands had 🎹. Stones, The Who, Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin... The more you listen, the more you’ll hear. Glad you’re onto Skynrd. Lots of outstanding songs. Allman Brothers band, The Outlaws, Tedeschi-Trucks band (Midnight In Harlem is a must)... Go forth & feel it deep in your soul. ✌🏽
I love how much you feel the music. We can see you get into the music and makes the reaction so much better. Thank you for giving these great songs the time to appreciate. I’m only 20 but Songs like these I don’t want to be forgotten.
Man, this song makes the ‘allergies’ appear quick... My buddy made a video basically saying it wouldn’t be long before we’d be home and couldn’t wait... He sent it before we were supposed to come home from overseas and sent it to his family back home... He was killed a less than a month after sending it... this song was the last song on his video and it kicks me every time... Thank you for what you do Sir! Really enjoy that we’re all on the same page! Like you said, we may all have different beliefs and come from different backgrounds but, at the end of the day, we can all talk and get to know each other better and make this a better America!! Y’al are great! Thank you again! 👍👊🇺🇸
Tuesday’s Gone” was written by Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins from the band, with vocals by Van Zant. It details how the band’s life is going to change in various ways adter being singed to MCA Records. Tuesday in this song is the name of a girl. It's about going away and leaving her behind.
They did use a string orchestra as accompaniment on this song! Such a beautiful piece of music 😊 And there are lots of rock bands that use keyboards/pianos: Guns N’ Roses REO Speedwagon Motley Crüe Journey Foreigner And many more!
Like "Ruby Tuesday" by The Rolling Stones, Tuesday in this song is the name of a girl. It's about going away and leaving her behind. Written by lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins, it's another "I must be going now" song on Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album, similar in theme to "Free Bird." There was a train track near the place where the band rehearsed. The sound of the trains inspired lead singer Ronnie Van Zant to write the first line, "Train roll on, on down the line." The group was discovered by Al Kooper, a producer and session musician who had previously worked with Bob Dylan, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and The Zombies. Kooper played some instruments and sang backup on the album, but his contributions were credited to "Roosevelt Gook." On this track, he played a synthesizer-like instrument called a Mellotron.
I love Lynyrd Skynyrd because they are a band that you can listen to that just hits you deep inside. They do have a soulful rock sound. “The lyrics are band frontman Ronnie Van Zant's realization that his normal life is finished forever with the band's new MCA/Sounds of the South record deal. "Tuesday," representing life as it was, is gone with the wind. “
Another incredible fact about the mind and heart of Ronnie Van Zant is that he never wrote any of the lyrics of these songs on paper. He listened to the band working out a song and the words came off of his tongue as we later heard them on record. His loss to the world of rock music is immeasurable. The fact that this band could still fill arenas, waiting to hear his songs for forty years after his death, is an indication of how much his words always strike a chord with listeners. A very special person with the soul of a poet.
All Rock & Roll has it's roots firmly in the Delta Blues.... Southern Rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers etc...) even more so... that's where the soul comes from...
Southern Rock (aka Soul Rock by me, now that you've said it- it's perfect! lol) has been my favourite brand of rock since my childhood in the early 70s in an area that played Hank Williams on the same station as KISS... lol! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_southern_rock_bands is a jumping off point... they all are amazing, i believe.
The 70s gave us so much phenomenal music. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best southern rock band. Ronnie Van Zant wrote and sang so many classics in his short life. RIP
Dude, I am sitting here with a compound fracture trying to keep my mind busy in a shitload of pain, I’ve hit the subscribe button 🤣. You been keeping me occupied and entertained for the past couple hours 🤣 thanks much appreciated 🤜 (To add what you were saying about the piano playing and other instruments etc it didn’t matter what genre of music old school music they took more pride I think and used more instruments & paid attention to details more)
You need to listen to the version that's on One more from the road album. It's a live album. Also there's concert footage of the band playing this in early 76 at winterland concert. Both live versions are fantastic. Also something else to note is that Skynyrd is a piano band
"Soul Rock" is a good description. A lot of the southern rock artists had the same background as a lot of the Motown artists. Came up playing in church and at home/ in the neighborhood. That's the difference. There's emotion, soul, and a relatability in all of it. Elvis is another example. He had very professional productions and at the same time a little bit funky and soulful. Kentucky Rain comes to mind.
As for the piano in the song, several Southern Rock groups used them. After Dwayne Allman died and Greg took over the Allman brothers used even more piano because that was Greg's instrument. Southern Rock was not like modern rock there was a lot more soul in it. They were country boys. Listen to Train Train by Blackfoot.
Glade to see people learn about new things from old times, I was backstage for the 10 years later Tour. First tour after crash. Looked in my old box and found 11 ticket stubs where i have seen them in concert. Pulled out the old LP's. Thanks for the Flashback.
@@josephconway3986 Ten Years Later Tour was not bad. still played all the old Music. Hung Ronnie Van Zant's hat on the mic. No one sang Free Bird. Sucked after that. Did see them with Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1974. Several times alone.
Trying to label or define music is missing the point in my opinion. Almost all music created with good intentions is some form of soul music. Lynyrd Skynyrd definitely created great music with a pure intention. It’s usually pretty easy to tell the artists who do for it the art from those who make dumbed down pablum for the sake of crass commercialism.
Southern Rock! It's a blend of rock, rhythm and blues. Maybe a little country harmony at times. Bands like this one Molly Hatchet, The Allman Brothers, and the Outlaws. Very popular in the 70's.
That’s the definition of southern rock “soulful “ Because most southern rock bands grew up in church and that’s why it has gospel and blues sounds in this type of music
yea same. my first time hearing this song was from happy gilmore and it made me dive head first into LS. obviously everyone and their dog has heard sweet home alabama, but this is the song that made me go "WOW who IS that?"

Southern Rock or even Folk Rock.. kinda about the same thing in my opinion. ;)
If it touches your soul, must be soul rock?
Lol....there are women named Tuesday...i.e. Tuesday Weld, an actress
yup. rock and metal have almost indefinite sub-genres. sometimes you can put a single band's album on 5 different subs

"is there such a thing as soul rock?"
yea. it's called southern rock

Sorry if I went off on a tangent, just got caught up in memories.
I hope your heart heals.
Love from me in South Texas to you and yours.

Billy Powell and his ever present Grand Piano…even live! Classic LS!
I love the live Winterland performance where he plays the piano and a Hammond B3 on the solo...epic!
I love when you closed your eyes to just listen and feel the music. I just read a quote that said back in the day music was for closing your eyes and enjoying. Todays music is less talented with alot of computer help and relies heavily on a video. this is why I love watching people react to the older music falling in love with what their hearing.
My Daddy always said "We Don't Know What We Know, Until We Experience IT" Man I Miss My Daddy God Rest His Soul 🥰
I know how you feel girl. I miss my sweet daddy too! 😢
Same, guys. 💕He introduced me to such great music like this.. My childhood ♥️ I was so blessed to have a father with such a great soul n love for good music like this.*sigh* Love you sm dad. Miss you ...until we meet again. 1 & A 1/2 Years ....and forever to go😭😩
It's called southern style rock & roll, my friend 🎶🎵 🎸 And yes it is deeply soulful.
Train...roll...on.......my baby's gone with the wind...yes he is....
ive loved this song my entire life , 50 years later i still get goosebumps every time i hear it
Six musicians, piano, drummer, bass, three lead guitars and singer Ronnie Van Sant. Lynyrd Skynyrd's music will outlive us all...
That's southern rock man most of it comes from the soul
"Tuesday is gone" and you can't do it over again. Whatever you did not do, is haunting you. Lost a person and wasted the day, but another week will come on Monday. Such poetry, is amazing.
Genius reply!❤
Yes there definitely is “soul” rock, we just call it southern rock and it’s absolutely beautiful
What he means by Tuesday and my baby is gone with the wind is, Sunday Monday and Tuesday he would be home with his woman but come Weds he was back on the road to play music.....he wants the clock to stop so he can be with his lady!!
AMEN...🙏❤️
Been listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd my whole life and they are so consistently great in their music!
Rock was born out of the blues, and both are steeped in soul. Southern rock is particularly soulful and bluesy.
Another awesome song. Heartbreakingly soulful
Southern Rock. My allergies are really messed up today!!
Peace and love always!😊❤
For me this has always been one of those songs that just makes you wanna hop in your ride, get on the freeway, and just drive.....
Was on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. Great movie, great songs!
I love a song that makes me feel like I’ve been to Church!
Country is Soul!!!! We are one in the same separated by time. Our people are your people.
If you dig Skynard my man, you most definitely need to check out the Allman Brothers... Melissa or Whilping Post. I think you'll be pleased.
I drive around for work literally listen to this song everyday man I love it. Truly talented musicians
My favorite Skynyrd song!
Southern Rock is a combination of Blues and Country with an edge of Hard Rock
I don't know if I could pick one favorite song from Skynyrd. They all are pretty much perfect. Just it play, listen and enjoy. They will take you there
"All I can do is write about it" is another one of their soulful songs, if you like them enough to give it a listen
That's a fantastic song. I'm always surprised how people don't know or react to that song.
I love all I can do is write about it. The song had so much truth in it.
That was my Dad’s favorite song, it was played at his funeral. He was a lifelong friend and fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, he went to school with them at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL. To be his favorite song by them, you know it has to be a good one.
Such a great, great song. Redneck poetry, and my wife and I listen to it all the time.
Peace out ✌️
I'm actually gonna watch them play later this year I know its different with his brother but couldn't turn down watching them play with Metallica gonna be a good show
I think it's considered 'Southern Rock', but Southern Rock has alot of influences from Blues, Bluegrass, and Soul Rock
There are a ton of songs off that soundtrack you would really enjoy:
Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer
Slow Ride - Foghat
Highway Star - Deep Purple
Stranglehold - Ted Nugent
Low Rider - War
Enjoy your reactions. Keep doing your thing!
Southern Rock is the balance between rock n roll, country and blues. Soul Rock. Ronnie Van Zant was the singer. one of the few who died in the plane crash 1977.
I'm glad you could "ride this train" with us brother! Loved seeing you FEEL this one!
The 60s and 70s was the best time in history for music. They where actual artist and actually played their instruments. Not just pushing a button on a box to give them sounds. And as far as the "soul rock" Thats just how it was in the south back then.(Southern Rock)They put their heart and SOUL into their 🎶 🎵 🪕
Lynrd Skynrd is super soulful! One of the great southern rock groups. Loving your reactions to them Van!
Southern Rock is like a sub genre of Classic Rock. It is kind of a blend of screaming guitar Rock, emotional Soul, the faith and belief of Gospel, and all the heart of Country.
There were women named Tuesday back then and that is who he's singing about. :)
Southern rock is a mixture of blues rock and country, and it sounds very soulful
"The hunt" is another killer tune from these boys.
I'm a Country Boy too!
This is one of your better southern rock bands to ever come out. Ever!
They did use a string orchestra as accompaniment on this song! Such a beautiful piece of music 😊
And there are lots of rock bands that use keyboards/pianos:
Guns N’ Roses
REO Speedwagon
Motley Crüe
Journey
Foreigner
And many more!
Toto long keyboard intro to Won't Hold Back Now
Led Zeppelin Cashmir
real music tends to make your eyes leak whether from sadness or from pure joy:) you dont listen to real music ,,,,,,you feel it in your soul
You can feel free to call it soul rock if you want to, we call it southern rock at it's best!
Billy Powell on the keys, a total talent in and of himself. A classically trained musician and the only one in the band with a highschool education.
I can hear his classical technique & improvisation & key changes just like the Mozart of Southern Rock.
Ballad of Curtis Loew is a badass song! Might wanna check that out if you haven't yet;]
He has done this one, check it out!
Definitely!
Like "Ruby Tuesday" by The Rolling Stones, Tuesday in this song is the name of a girl. It's about going away and leaving her behind.
Written by lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins, it's another "I must be going now" song on Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album, similar in theme to "Free Bird."
There was a train track near the place where the band rehearsed. The sound of the trains inspired lead singer Ronnie Van Zant to write the first line, "Train roll on, on down the line."
The group was discovered by Al Kooper, a producer and session musician who had previously worked with Bob Dylan, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and The Zombies.
That’s right. I saw them in 2019 too. I also saw them in 1987, ten years after the plane crash.
He said if you can't remember the lyrics, then they are not worth singing.
ABSOLUTELY SOUL ROCK!!! YES!!
I think it's all about what's in the depth of your soul when we talk about LYNARD SKYNYRD
This is one of my favorite songs and I have never seen a reaction! You have made my day! Memories with my mom when I was younger. ❤
RIP
Tuesdays gone to the wind- the past is the past and you got to keep moving forward- that’s what I get the song to mean
Dude, I am sitting here with a compound fracture trying to keep my mind busy in a shitload of pain, I’ve hit the subscribe button 🤣. You been keeping me occupied and entertained for the past couple hours 🤣 thanks much appreciated 🤜
(To add what you were saying about the piano playing and other instruments etc it didn’t matter what genre of music old school music they took more pride I think and used more instruments & paid attention to details more)
I consider this as southern rock
Best band ever! So much talent from right here in Jacksonville FL ❤️❤️❤️
Tuesday's gone is about a girl . another great one!
This song is one of those lazy Sunday songs your kicking back chilling kind of songs.
Southern rock mostly has that blues feeling. You might also react to Blackfoot, Mashall Tucker and Molly Hatchet. They all had that same feel.
Man they are full of soul !! They have so many songs and yes there is such a thing as soulful rock you have skynyrd , Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc
Another one of my life's favs, southern, classic rock n blues music❤ God bless*
Southern Rock Marathon? All deep Soul!
Marshall Tucker Band
Heard it in a love song
Fire on the mountain
Can’t ya see
Glade to see people learn about new things from old times, I was backstage for the 10 years later Tour. First tour after crash. Looked in my old box and found 11 ticket stubs where i have seen them in concert. Pulled out the old LP's. Thanks for the Flashback.
there was no tour after the plane crash skynyrd died the day the plane crashed anything after that is not skynyrd !!!
Sometimes its not just about the the lyrics. Its about the feeling or the mood. And that's what drives a good song
Love this song! Love Skynyrd! You should definitely check out Freebird live from Oakland 1977...if you haven't already...it is an epic performance!
Southern Rock! It's a blend of rock, rhythm and blues. Maybe a little country harmony at times. Bands like this one Molly Hatchet, The Allman Brothers, and the Outlaws. Very popular in the 70's.
Great reaction. Please react to "I Need You". This is a highly underrated song by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Not just underrated my friend, actually one of skynyrd's best in my opinion. Good taste.
Yessir!
Absolutely 💯.
Yes and was I right or wrong are two of the best
Man are you right about "I Need You!"
That’s the definition of southern rock “soulful “ Because most southern rock bands grew up in church and that’s why it has gospel and blues sounds in this type of music
I loved this song as a kid from Happy Gilmore, when I found LS and this song years later I fell in love with it again on a whole other level.
"It's all in the hips"
yea same. my first time hearing this song was from happy gilmore and it made me dive head first into LS. obviously everyone and their dog has heard sweet home alabama, but this is the song that made me go "WOW who IS that?"
