- In this lecture, I discuss how the basic or archetypal categories we use to frame the world are represented in image, where they existed long before their nature could be articulated. These categories include the individual (hero/adversary), culture (wise king/tyrant), and nature (destruction/creation). The heroic individual (the knower) is typically masculine, as is culture (the known), while the unknown is feminine. These categories can be conceptualized, as well, as explorer, explored territory, and unexplored territory. The most abstract category is the dragon of chaos, the monster who guards what is most valuable. It is from this most primordial of categories that the other three emerge. Our existence as prey and predator is reflected in the ambivalent representation of the absolute unknown.

@Müni Hausen The article you link leaves a lot to be desired. It leaps into hyperbolic statements on Talmudic torture practices without a shred of decent evidence. Simply having a Jewish heritage doesn't make it a plot, it's correlation without causation...
On the atrocities, there are similarities between all ancient and modern torture practices because as a human, you know what hurts you and because you know this you know what to inflict upon another. Sadly, the knowledge of how to effectively rip people apart is something we all share, and uneducated secret police brutes don't need to read some secret Jewish text to reach the same results on the first try.
Now there might be evidence somewhere for this "Jewish conspiracy", but certainly not from the article you linked. It's format of Communist, Jew and pictures of corpses from real atrocities is the same cheap pseudo-journalism that you see with a CNN article featuring an unflattering picture of Trump, Putin and an out of context headline.

A year ago I dreaded going to my 1 hour lectures at university, now I've watched 4 of these lectures in a row. Unbelievably compelling, and affirms for many of us of our instincts we had in college which was: I'm not the reason for being bored in my university classes.

Simply masterful! I’m always in awe of Dr Peterson’s grasp and knowledge of the specificities of neurobiology. It’s amazing how he can speak about the intricacies of neuroscience ad-lib and seemingly extemporaneously.

I think this lecture might be the best one so far. It's ridiculously relevant and insightful. My entire theory of science and reality is being expanded rapidly second by second because of this man's grasp of human nature and motivations, and evolutionary neurological progression. The convergence of things he's pointing out is outrageously satisfying and beautiful.
It may sound strange, but many themes in these lectures are like a therapy after an abusive relationship with a narcissist or a psychopath. Very validating on a mature level.

The Dragon is also depicted as a phoenix, SonGoku has to master the chaos in persued of the Dragonballs in order to be granted a wish by the Dragon and as soon as the wish is granted, the Dragon disappears again. The whole story is essentialy is the story of SonGoku growing up. There's even a parallel with the Lion King in the figures of Rafiki and Muten-Roshi (Old Master Muten), they both even carry a walking stick. Now wonder it was the most successful anime.

Interesting what Jordan was saying about distinguishing between random events and those that are your fault. The stoic philosophy of the classical world was profoundly concerned with exactly that question.

As a speech pathologist who specializes in dysfluent aphasia following strokes, I have seen a similar example to what you mentioned regarding cursing being a separate circuit from typical language. I have had a remarkable number of patients admitted after a stroke who are only capable of verbalizing curse words. Even though in some cases they were the sweet 85 year old grandma who has never said such words in her life. You've helped me understand that on a deeper level. I always knew that curse words must be stored in a separate area of the brain than language production. I encounter that patient too often for it to be an anomaly. I just assumed that curse words were associated with emotion and stored differently. Your explanation is so much more profound! Thank you!

I don't know how you do it Dr. Peterson. It must be extremely mentally draining to articulate these points. You seem to answer your own question about why the stories and not understanding the stories in these videos. You seem to need an incredible intellect to articulate the meaning of the story, and an equally impressive intellect to understand it. Whereas at some level we all intuit the story, but don't know why. Dragons with gold, The Harry Potter series, I never knew why the stories were so drawing until these lectures. Thank you.

I can't be the only one who pauses every 15 seconds and furiously scribbles down every word. There is so much info here so densely packed. These two hour lectures turn into more like 6 hour writing sessions. And when it's done I inevitably continue writing on to something else, being so inspired by the content. Thank you Dr.! You are my biggest inspiration. You made me realize I wanted to be a story-teller. Something that can transcend any art; music, painting, etc. not just writing. Like you said: "These truths will always be true".
This is one of my favorites. Discusses dragons, tells the Osiris/Horus story. Points out that ALL THIS TIME, this information as only been able to be expressed in narratives. What an amazing thing that we have JBP helping us decode all these stories and explicitly state their meaning.

I work in sterile processing, and for up to 9 - 10 hours a day I listen to Dr Peterson's lectures while I work, through my ear buds. I haven't the slightest clue as to how it'll affect me in the long run, but it's well worth the investment.

I do the same thing, listen while I work.
I really like the idea of multiple frames of being. I never thought of life that way before. It used to be a sort of long line if time, with points of different things on the line. Sort of an arrow of time idea, but trying to live on that line. Frames of being kind of wrecks that unidimensional living and things get to be 3D, so to speak. It's very satisfying. Also, thinking about some things in the light of archetypes sure explains a lot, makes things much more transparent or obvious.

As a role model for Western males Dr. Peterson is formidable in so many ways that it's difficult to comprehend. How often does an academic appear who is at the top of their game and who also has the heart and courage of a lion?
i think one thing particularly interesting about dragons that i don't really hear peterson talk about is that dragons are occasionally depicted as breathing fire(maybe because that concept isnt necessarily as old as the dragon itself). i think this is especially interesting because generally that position of "master of fire" is usually reserved to man specifically. attributing this ability to the dragon in my opinion is indicative of the fact that in addition to the lizard, the bird, and the cat, other people are included in the dragon amalgam, and arguably the most fearsome and dangerous aspect of the dragon is the fact that it can breathe fire, which i think demonstrates that as society developed people became less and less fearful of natural predators, and more fearful of the evils of other men.

I would argue (within the structure that Peterson has established) that fire is chaos incarnate, whereas the dragon is the bringer of chaos. So when we master fire, we master chaos. The dragon isn't a master of fire, but a producer of it. It cannot control how it burns, only set things ablaze.
Thoughtfully put, but fire can also be thought about in purely natural chaotic terms. Early man that lived in the forest would have often been sent into a panic by the onset of naturally occurring forest fires. If you've ever seen that kind of overwhelmingly apocalyptic blaze, you can easily imagine its impact on primitive man.
My guess is that it originates somewhere around the point when man no longer feared natural beasts. Groups of men with bows and spears aren't scared of snakes or big cats or eagles so you have to make the dragon breathe fire, to keep it scary.

Wow, professor... you are just getting better and better... this lecture is one of the sharpest and I just sat here consuming this for over 2hours very late into the night... I felt like I sucked in a whole new world... I feel like a completely different person.... and its so crazy because there were so many truths in what you said.... it wasn't just what you said... but every single memory in my past that connects with what you are saying... it's like my entire life was brought to the forefront of my mind as you spoke through everything my memory would bring more of my past experiences in direct parallel with the archetypical stories and that was done all the way up until the present and gave context to who I am at this moment. As I also use to read the bible a lot when I was a bit younger, a lot of verses would pop into my head and coincide with your lecture, even verses you were not mentioning or referring to. I have these types of comments throughout my life... where things feel so much more important and significant than usual. Years ago I use to get chills all the time when I'd think of certain ideas, and sometimes my brain would physically burn when I thought about powerful and uplifting ideas. But those ideas were always connected to a very large scale context that linked me to the world around me and beyond. Sounds a bit strange and wishy washy but it wasn't really... it always felt so specific and in context. Anyway, thanks again for another great lecture.

I’ve been changing my life so much the past 7 months especially this past month I’ve been listening to mostly you, Dennis Prager, and my audible books right now Rational Bible Genesis, 1984, and Irreversible Damage day and night even while I’m asleep my head phones are on playing a story or lecture and than today I finally went to church for the first time in a decade been trying for 3 months my hubby finally got Sunday off for good and gosh I’m telling you I feel like my brain, soul, and spirit are slowly being cleansed of the scum and trash that has been poisoning it for years thank you for all the knowledge you and many great people share you guys are angels honestly to bless us with this knowledge for free god bless you dr Jordan Peterson 🙏🏻

he is quite explicit, he didn't figure "it" out, but rather bringing it to you in a package you can understand. It is essentially as sophisticated take on ancient symbology, wisdom, and scriptures.

The end of this lecture made me cry
It wasn't until I started listening to these lectures that I finally understood why my psychology teacher was so fascinated by me and fought to try to keep me from dropping out (still did, for reasonable reasons I won't go into). This intense fascination was because I had figured something out by living through a childhood only describable as a waking nightmare. I had developed my own theory about the nature of the universe (this was back in 2006, when I was an atheist and long before I started my quest for theological insight).
This theory, built off of prior experiences and observation, was that chaos is merely an absence of order much like darkness is the absence of light, and rather than order springing from chaos, I had concluded that the opposite is true. Where there are different forms of order, chaos will become present as the different types of order meet. If the conditions are right, both types of order will have lost some order, but stability will be born. Such is the nature of celestial orbits, as well as interactions of living beings, and even different facets of our own psyche. In most situations, whichever form of order can maintain significant cohesion over time eventually removes all of the opposing order, reducing the opposing order to a state of chaos, then absorbs what's left into its own being.
What is to be gained by understanding this understanding is the key to identifying why we have order to begin with. My theory proposes that the universe started with multiple forms of order that for whatever reason came into contact with one another. Upon such contact, the different properties each form of order needed to remain at 100% order came into conflict, and a catastrophic burst of loss of cohesion, or "chaos," set everything into a state of both decay and creation. Thus began the struggle for dominant order. Some forms of order were obliterated, consumed by the victor, then reborn in the image of the victor - with minor variants. Such was the foundation for life itself, the birth of order-spawned chaos.
We can see this from the formation of celestial bodies constantly at odds with each other, some outright devouring everything in its path, as well as ones that have come into a stabilized relationship, and even the birth and rebirth of stars. In society, we see politicians sew chaos to keep people's emotions in a state of conflict so that no one notices the politicians maintaining their personal stability that is formed when at least two other parties are in direct conflict with each other. War, or an imaginary just cause, is necessary chaos that brings the politicians personal stability. They just have to make sure there's always a fresh supply of pawns to take up arms. On the personal level, we wrestle with our nature of potentially being orderly or being chaotic. When we learn to balance the order with the chaos, we achieve stability, or balance, if you will.
I had no idea at the time just how profound it was for a 21-year-old who had never had any real teachings of psychology or science to develop a theory out of seemingly nowhere. I think the fact that such an understanding came to me naturally was what had fascinated my professor. Maybe living so far outside of the norm gave me an outsider's perspective of my surroundings. While most kids worried about when the next Power Rangers show would be on, I was living through a mental Hell. Again, I won't go into it. Let's just say a child can confront his inner demons at a very, very young age, and it changes you forever when you realize just how real our capacity for evil acts can be when your consciousness is but a passenger being held hostage by the darkness we can all become, if psychological chaos almost wins over our sense of order.

I've taken 54 pages worth of notes thus far on lectures 1-6. Can't wait to start on this one! :) Peterson fills my heart, mind and soul with all things necessary

This content is very stimulating. I studied evolutionary biology in college, so the biological points alone are not mind-blowing to me (mind was blown on that stuff a long time ago). But the way you tie biology into the psychology IS mind blowing. It makes me want to read evolutionary psychology even though the field seems to be highly criticized right now due to the fact that much of what it reveals is rarely politically-correct. I feel like we're in a strange time where there is debate about whether people's feelings are more important than the truth.
I have been struggling with making sense of the creation story as well and trying to fit it into "real life." I feel Dr Peterson just expedited me through a few years of thinking though I have some potential rabbit holes with the snake..

Just thinking about the female hero myth thing. I'm not sure if it's about taming an aggressive man, at least not in the making him docile sense. It's giving that aggression some kind of guidance, to make it serve her needs.
Harnessing and directing the power, as opposed to 'castrating' it, as it were.
The 'castrating', docile scenario might actually be embodied in the opposite of the feminine hero, the feminine adversary. In the context of the current Western political climate, we might hypothesize that a good female hero story would involve saving the untamed masculine from an oppressive castrating female force.

@@mrtoxicwasteland only recently have I started to analyze the stories I've known throughout my life (like, the way Doctor does -- or at least try to imitate his mode of doing that) and my mind suddenly stumbled upon the Legend of Zelda.
Like, there's so much ancient meaning and symbolism in this simplistic story I can't stand it. The most perplexing to me was how the hell it happens, that the from the three godly powers bestowed upon humanity, the Power is wielded by the tyrannical dark, and how that's actually necessary for the heroes to PERIODICALLY face it to develop and allow for some time of peace and prosperity. It blew my mind when I saw Ganon as the actual hero, one of the actual heroes of the fable, whose part is NECESSARY and we couldn't do without him.

so basically i will listen to each half of these lectures pausing between the breaks he gives to the class
and think about what he says in each hour. THEN after i finish it i have started replaying the videos one more time
before moving on to the next and it really helps me digest and put together all the material he goes through.
looking up seeing that i am on maps of meaning 07 is shocking to me.
there was a point in which i went and watched Pinocchio halfway through his analysis
and that turned out to be vital to seeing that where he is coming from is NOT from assumption but from the plot of the movie itself.
at this moment looking back at where i am at right now,
what turned out to be a lecture or curriculum based on one specific subject ( tools to create maps of meaning for your life)
became a beautiful course incorporating History Mythology Biology Science Religion traditional stories etc.
Also , these micro to macro / macro to micro outlines and charts are absolutely amazing !!!
