It’s crazy how so many lessons are lost in time from great teachers. Moments that are meaningful because technology wasn’t their to record these kinds of experiences.
Why would they be lost? Weren't those lectures attented to by humans? Recorded, by conciousness? Which then took those meaningful moments and incorported them into their lives and passed them on to others. To their children. Why would a moment be more valuable if it is captured and stored as dead material (video aka technology), instead of being integrated into a human life. Yes I get that technology allows us to easily multiply information captured. I work in tech too, yet this sentiment increasingly irritates me. It feels like our single-minded focus on technology really devalues human life. Yes this enables you to go directly 'to the source'. But is it really?

It is so beautiful that Jordan's believe in himself is helping us enjoy this content even more than two decades later. When he was happy even the 13-14 students showing up, who knew that millions of people would have watch this and counting. It's just Peterson's believe to articulate his thoughts and present them by eliminating a huge amount of your presuppositions. Thank you Doctor Peterson for being my most accurate source of news and thank you for being the only public figure who wouldn't mislead me. I have almost watched all your content and studied your books and tried so hard to find gaps somewhere in your thinking, but I haven't been able to do that even reading everything and watching everything with a skeptical attitude. In fact, you're one of the first people I heard speaking about how things have got better in all fronts, but values and traditions. I tried to look for holes in your knowledge and couldn't do that, and I'm glad I couldn't. Revisiting this, you approximately 34 years old - you are basically still sticking by your word even 25 years later and you were basically saying the same thing you did then that you're saying now. It's just incredible what the ultimate human potential is like with truth and hardwork, coupled with genuine curiosity and intention for the improvement of the individual. That's the central message of your work for me. Can't thank Dr Peterson enough!
5:08: "with regards to the video tape, if you could ignore it, that would be best. There's no real purpose to it." Little did he know, UA-cam would be invented 9 years later and that he'd be a MEGA star on it 22 years later ;)

From July 1993 to June 1998, Peterson lived in Arlington, Massachusetts, while teaching and conducting research at Harvard University, where he was hired as an assistant professor in the psychology department. He was born in 1962.
Fast forward 25 years and he's sporting a Caesar cut with an alternate clean shave/short beard - before I die I guarantee he'll be held up as a fashion icon lmao
This popped up on my feed and I was curious. I was charmed to see a young and energetic Peterson, especially with the same mannerisms and ticks he has today. But now I'm like 10 minutes into the lecture and it really has me hooked JP was a rockstar even like 25 years ago 😮

I love watching his lectures. As a future professor myself I find his pedagogy interesting. If I were to meet him, my question would concern pedagogy, for sure.
+Jordan B Peterson -- It is interesting how one can enjoy the freshness of the talks by Dr. Jordan Peterson's in his earlier formative years of his thinking theories. Of course I have no idea what years the Harvard lectures happened or what age Dr. Peterson might have been. But in listening to his Harvard lectures, it is like one is thinking with him as he talks; unlike the Canadian lectures posted in 2014-2016 when it seems that the doctor has become his absolute voice of authority about his own assumptions. I find myself pondering this impression about Dr. Peterson since I have only been introduced to his lectures in 2016. I never knew him before 2016. But nonetheless I like his thinking because it challenges my thinking about stuff beyond what I have thought before.
You should see his Biblical Lectures if you haven't already. It takes him a while to forge through his foundational assumptions to get to the actual studying, but it's really quite something.
Its like now every lecture he's putting on for free and then used technology to monetize it, but he started just playing around. Thank you for your logic. My brother sent me a screenshot today of both your books, after I referenced you in a discussion, more me being more open with everyone, and he paused and said, look at your phone. He just picked them up today as he also reminded me that I've sent him over 30 of your lectures via text and it was a cool thing to connect with my brother like that after 8 years, id you don't count last year, due to my father's passing. I will say that I've worked harder then every on myself but am in a state of turmoil where my success and efforts are aligned and yet a bit if self sabotage seems to be creeping in in comparison to home life, so these are huge and I appreciate it. It allows my mistakes to show so they may be corrected.
Can't believe how much more inviting and pretty the rooms of Harvard are compared to the UofT rooms. At least, this particular room vs his 2017 lecture room.
If he only knew how many lives and hearts he is going to save. He had no idea how pivotal a role he would play in so many lives. Thank you Jordan, for everything.
At 1:15:00 he is referring to a Harper's (not Atlantic) article called Shipping Out by David Foster Wallace. And it was the dill pickle, not the orange slice, that was too close to the sandwich :) I keep noticing connections between David Foster Wallace and Jordan Peterson (Canada, Boston, lobsters,...). This video has me convinced that I'm on to something!
I am so glad this got recommended to me. I was supposed to go to sleep by now, but I'm sucked in. This feels just like watching Personality 2017 for the first time
Now it's 2020 and I can understand with these videos why the conflict with university and mass-media hate destroys you. The unknown that broke loose after bunch of - experimental? - videos was indeed overwhelimg. Here dr Peterson looked like fish in the water during these lectures. Lectures for broad audience, like 3-4years ago - you can see the emotional strain on him. Interviews with media - cortisol levels are damn too high. Such repetitive and vicious stress, combined with family problems - no wonder for further problems with anxiety. Damn it must be hard. Btw I like those old lectures the most. They are not simple, but with my neurophysiological, medical and psychiatric background, are much clearer and transparent to the point than simplified, "narratived" versions. Good health for you dr Peterson and hope to see you again.
I wish I had been born in the circumstances that would have laid a better foundation for me to have had the ability to have been in this style education with this kind of educator. I know its not too late to aim for something higher than what I have been given the responsibility over now, and also, being able to be a “fly on the wall” of this particular educator’s classroom is so enriching and feels like I have been given such a privilege! Thank you for uploading these 😊

I agree and you can tell his parents raised him very effectively! I'm about his age, and I get everything that he says but I didn't spend the time to get the schooling, didn't build the work ethic, etc. Parents don't get enough credit.

youre looking at rich kids able to afford an unaffordable education and nobody in the western world thats part of the middle class or upper middle class would be able to listen to this, but this age of time made it possible for me as a poor human being to gain these insights, man i could cry thinking this through i mean youd need two human beings that made it verry succesfully in life coming together making a child that which was verry succesfully raised to end up in this situation to even gain the knowledge and yet my serbian ass coming from a family that cant afford food or rent barely making it through with 5 euros a day by digging holes and selling crops is here gaining this knowledge, i cant even be thanful enough for this
Imagine what his former students are likely doing these days. I would hope and believe the seeds of wisdom planted during lectures like this had a Randy Pausch effect on these folks. They probably had moments of levity and inside jokes with him like any other professor, maybe even some low points like disagreeing on tough points, discussing papers and grades as he mentioned in some recent speeches interviews. At the end of the day even those low points were likely handled in a better manner than the average college professor. The man is a modern marvel, I am glad he stepped out of the class room to share some of this with the rest of us. Now go clean your room.
It’s amazing how that new ability to read in silent came about, it’s like it’s new ability that literally allows you hear your own voice in mind and now thanks to that we can now change the voice we hear making some of the best memes hilarious

4:44 Back in the 90s, that laptop was THE SHIT.
5:08: "with regards to the video tape, if you could ignore it, that would be best. There's no real purpose to it." Little did he know, UA-cam would be invented 9 years later and that he'd be a MEGA star on it 22 years later ;)
Miley’s a Mega Star.
Sometimes life sorts itself out beyond order.
UA-cam was invented 3 years later in 2005.
Does anyone ever think about how amazing and dramatic this mans success is in life in almost every domain he’s improved and wisend to a great extent. Very inspirational.
It’s freaking me out that he’s always been this brilliant even as a young man. He makes me speechless But I love it!
It’s like he gets euphoria lecturing and teaching about his passions, really wonderful to see. Very rare individual indeed.
The days of the overhead projector...and slide sheets. Great stuff and enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Dan's Spot on the Tube
My mom was an art teacher and I loved projecting my doodles on the wall.
To be fair we still had overhead projectors and slide sheets back in Middle/High School just a few years ago. I guess they don't get enough funding to buy proper projectors w/ computers.
I knew it intuitively but could not dissect it….. “ carrying your cross” was my definition of it.
Thank You for opening up these concepts to all, especially the young🙏
7:12 i wish i had a teacher like this growing up, the energy and insight is amazing!!!
Ey me too everyday
From July 1993 to June 1998, Peterson lived in Arlington, Massachusetts, while teaching and conducting research at Harvard University, where he was hired as an assistant professor in the psychology department. He was born in 1962.
I put my 1992 glasses on and I can see that he's handsome.
Lol Sean flirting lol.Get your head out of your computer and get outside.

Dude.
This popped up on my feed and I was curious. I was charmed to see a young and energetic Peterson, especially with the same mannerisms and ticks he has today.
But now I'm like 10 minutes into the lecture and it really has me hooked
JP was a rockstar even like 25 years ago 😮
Wow, Jordan is so generous to release that to the public !
I truly love this man from all my heart , bless him and every thing around him.
Thank you, Dr. Peterson, for putting these older videos on YTube. I have watched 2017 Maps of Meaning and enjoyed them very much.
You can really see how much "refining" has happened between then and now of these ideas and their delivery
I don’t understand all the intellectual words he says but you can see just how he goes into a state of flow when talking. You feel calm when watching him through his lecture
look at all those young students with papers and taking notes!! the only person with the laptop is the oldest person, who probably could afford it.
H Terri.
I sucked at taking notes, so I hauled my Walkman around and recorded everything. Up to my neck in tapes, which I even forgot to label properly 😖
What is a seamster ? I'm curious
Laptops take notes too, ya know. Source: I was a notetaker in college.
Loved how he walked and actually make connections to the person inquiring.
Ezekiel 25;17 "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides, by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.
Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children.
And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers
And you will know my name is the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon thee."
God bless you Dr. Jordan B Peterson ❤ Thank you for being our Shepard. Guiding us through the valley of darkness, and helping destroy selfishness, tyranny, and evil.
man... watching these lectures made me realize how destructive social media and technology really is. i may be imagining things, but people feel in tune with their thoughts and the reality around them. no culture war bs or petty politics... one cannot get a vibe like this anywhere today...
Gosh all the years of seeking spiritual mentors and all I needed was a JP and in recognising my love for psychology....here now though eh?! It's never too late to do what you really want in life!!!
I love watching his lectures. As a future professor myself I find his pedagogy interesting. If I were to meet him, my question would concern pedagogy, for sure.

hahahaha!
Me neither, please explain the joke so everybody gets it.
Bc JP looks like Seinfeld here. And the footage is old school. 😉
@@RS-rj7ke Ohhh now it makes sense lol
The eighties, I so remember the style.
Ann Porter these vids were recorded in 1996. You see the year printed on the course syllabus shown in the first video.
Wow, 20 years ago!
You should see his Biblical Lectures if you haven't already. It takes him a while to forge through his foundational assumptions to get to the actual studying, but it's really quite something.
I feel that your certainly not alone. He certainly raises the bar in perspective.
Peterson's mullet: Order in the front, Chaos in the back
What order? 🤏🏾 😆
Can't believe how much more inviting and pretty the rooms of Harvard are compared to the UofT rooms. At least, this particular room vs his 2017 lecture room.
The difference of several billion dollars.
If he only knew how many lives and hearts he is going to save. He had no idea how pivotal a role he would play in so many lives. Thank you Jordan, for everything.
At 1:15:00 he is referring to a Harper's (not Atlantic) article called Shipping Out by David Foster Wallace. And it was the dill pickle, not the orange slice, that was too close to the sandwich :)
I keep noticing connections between David Foster Wallace and Jordan Peterson (Canada, Boston, lobsters,...). This video has me convinced that I'm on to something!
RLW Nice catch
Maybe Jordan admired him and felt his post modern beliefs on his suicide?
Dr. Jordan Peterson has inspired me to obtain my PhD. I start August 30th, 2021.
Hey! How're you going with it? Best of luck :)
I have a feeling this man is going to change a lot of lives in the future.
ha he looks like jerry seinfeld
what's the _deal_ with post-modernism, huh?
or is it jerry seinfeld that looks like professor peterson!? xD
He also reminds me of Jim Carrey
EVERYONE did.
when he smiles he looks like mark ruffalo. maybe he can play Peterson in a movie after Peterson saves the world
I am so glad this got recommended to me.
Thank you for uploading these 😊
He’s giving it to you now. You DO have that privilege :)
Young JP looks like that anime teacher who's secretly the strongest & most skilled martial artist in the country.
2019, he has over 2M subscribers.
More power to you.
I wish our university classrooms looked like this or like auditoriums, instead of a bunch of lines of hard chairs.

Looks like he's maybe 10 years older than them and teaching them shit that's blowing their minds :o

An unqualified genius.
I agree and you can tell his parents raised him very effectively! I'm about his age, and I get everything that he says but I didn't spend the time to get the schooling, didn't build the work ethic, etc. Parents don't get enough credit.
@@christopherarendt3531
He was actually 33 years old in this video, and was about to turn 34 half a year later.
@Rishi Eastwood
Yes, I just confirmed that Jordan Peterson indeed was probably about 10 years older than his students in this video. =)
@@christopherarendt3531 what a way to blame parents for your life

Damn Peterson....you look dashing.
It's so refreshing to see him discuss course admin with his students
I would do extremely questionable things to be able to go back in time and take this class with legend Dr. Jordan B. Peterson
Such a trip seeing him young 😂😂 I’ve known of JP since around 2018 and this is my first time ever seeming him young, and it’s not just like a picture.. it’s him being all animated and what not lol. trippy
This him like at 28 or 32
Ah, overhead projectors! I remember those from the 80's. I also remember Jordan's haircut being in fashion.
in the mid 2000s, my school were still using them
Cute! 1996 is the year I became a mom!
He has a kind face, like a primary school teacher
This is incredible to watch
dr Peterson is so young here! love his animated style of speaking!
The last few minutes of this are gold dust, thank you JP
A sweetheart.

youre looking at rich kids able to afford an unaffordable education and nobody in the western world thats part of the middle class or upper middle class would be able to listen to this, but this age of time made it possible for me as a poor human being to gain these insights, man i could cry thinking this through i mean youd need two human beings that made it verry succesfully in life coming together making a child that which was verry succesfully raised to end up in this situation to even gain the knowledge and yet my serbian ass coming from a family that cant afford food or rent barely making it through with 5 euros a day by digging holes and selling crops is here gaining this knowledge, i cant even be thanful enough for this
I had no idea Rick Springfield was such a brilliant intellectual!
Rick frickin Springfield...hahahaha
Touche
I was thinking a young Seinfeld, but okay.

Jordan definitely had the right calling...he's so damn handsome too! His wife is a lucky, lucky lady to have met such an intelligent, humourous, good looking and successful guy with those big brown eyes, cute facial expressions and better hair than Fonz! Smh....I wanted to see a younger version of him and now I can't enough of his earlier lectures....
He was so young and happy back then, incomparable to the way he is now
i wonder if the students in this class now look at this vid on UA-cam and think "people are getting this class free and im still paying off gigantic student loan""

The labtop. The projector. This has to be mid-late 90's. Its crazy to see Jordan Peterson when he was young.
