The Who are among the greatest rock bands in the history of this music. The 4 greatest albums are: "Tommy" 1969, "Live at Leeds" 1970, "Who's next" 1971 and "Quadrophenia" 1973. Of course, there are other excellent compositions such as My generation (1965), I can see for miles (1967), Join together (1972), Who are you (1978), You better you bet (1981), Eminence front (1982) etc. Each Who album sounds different. It is mainly guitarist Pete Townshend who writes lyrics and music and sometimes John Entwistle (voted as one of the greatest rock bassists of all time). Let's not forget Keith Moon, the unique and talented drummer and Roger Daltrey, a great singer. Thank you for this analysis.

You picked a fine rabbit hole to dive into. The Who were among the most influential bands of the 20th century. As well as being among the loudest. All four members were insanely talented. You need to see them live to get a sense of their incredible energy. I would suggest their Isle Of Wight and Woodstock concerts

Hi Saeed! Roger Daltrey is not a "big" man, but his voice is very BIG, powerful, controlled even when shouting or screaming his lyrics. A one of a kind voice, very nuanced, to be savoured. I like that you get that about him!

"Love Reign O'er Me" (LROM) is the last song on the album. The important part about LROM is that on the 3 songs before it on the album, the main character, Jimmy, was contemplating suicide and very nearly succeeded. And then he had an epiphany with saved his life and led to LROM. BTW, lead vocalist Roger Daltrey's voice is equally as great on all the other songs on this album as it was on LROM. They don't call him Leather Lungs Daltrey for nuthin'!

The rock opera is brilliant and Guitarist Pete Townshend is a genius songwriter. The entire band hit new levels for this record. The Who have many great songs, but my favorites come from their Live at Leeds album. It was recorded on the perfect night and at the perfect time when their youthful energy was being combined with incredible musical abilities. The raw power and energy that it produced is awe inspiring. My Generation is my favorite, a 15 minute medley of songs with one incredible riff after another. Young Man Blues, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Magic Bus, Summertime Blues... the bangers keep coming.

This is the closing track on side 4 of "Quadrophenia". As you can imagine, with 17 tracks telling a story, the mood and pace changes throughout. "Won't Get Fooled Again" from Shepperton Studios is Maximum R&B at its best. Pure rock energy crackling from every pore. However, at 9:10, it's over your time limit. "Baba O'Reilly", from the same set, is probably the one to go for next. Within 4 months of that performance (May 1978) drummer Keith Moon passed away at 32. It was an end of an era which had started in 1964.

Another iconic band with a deep catalog starting around 1964 to sink your writer's teeth into. They have a range of sounds. BTW: I think you got it; the word is over where o'er is written but pronounced as 'or'; it's as a poetic contraction. It also is used in the US national athem in the line "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave".

The Who have hit so many genre in their careers. Started with POP and R&B. Hit psychedelia a bit. Power balots...Rock and concept albums...there is a good selection of quirky, cute songs. There is early heavy metal...there is a bit of disco-ish from the early 80s. There are many, many songs used throughout advertisments and tv and movies. There are many classic hits....and this is just one gem from this incredible album. Bargain, Behind Blue eyes, Baba ORiely, are three incredible songs on the album that is over flowing with nothing but incredible ear candy called Who's Next. The entire Quadraphenia album...Tommy has many incredible songs...and that is just a few of their albums :)

Quadrophenia the album is a rock opera that is a youth story that the main character gets into the mod culture and his trials and tribulations and at the end gets totally disillusioned by it was latter made into a movie The mods were a culture that wore smart fashion and rode Italian motor scooters adorned with extra wing mirrors and headlights and painted with iconic British symbols at the same time another British youth culture was the rockers who rode motor bikes wore jeans and leather often adorned with metal studs and chains they sometimes clashed violently This cumulated in large Conflicts that took place at Clacton and Hastings during the Easter weekend of 1964. A second round took place on the south coast of England over the Whitsun weekend (18 and 19 May 1964), especially at Brighton, where fights occurred over two days and moved along the coast to Hastings and back; hence nicknamed the "Second Battle of Hastings" although it involved large numbers from each group and damage was done to property and a large number of arrests were made it was blown out of proportion by the press questions were asked in parliament the movie encompasses this and drug use as well as youth culture rebellious attitude to society.

An absolute powerhouse on stage in their prime, they were punk rock a decade before the term even existed, yet with a depth and maturity that no punk band could ever hope to rival. This song is the sad and dramatic ending of a life of a young man who drove his motorbike off the cliffs of Dover. If you watch Quodrophenia, it will make sense, that final scream as he goes over into the sea. It’s the end of the album, and the movie. Great songs all through this production and a real period peice of Mods and Rockers in England in the 60’s

Pete Townshend is right there with Neil Peart as far as songwriting goes. You should review the entire Tommy album because it's a theme album. You could do it in 2-3 videos so it's not too long.
