    The song is about a sculptor who works with clay and with stone, who tries to recreate from memory the form and image of his wife who has died.

    Jon’s voice can transport you… not being a religious person, listening to his voice is a spiritual experience, many times transcending mere music listening… love your reaction, same reaction that I had 46 years ago when listening it for the first time… and the instrumental interlude, with the piano and the guitar and the bass chasing each other until they meet is one of those ‘Yes moments ‘ that you feel is music just for your soul…
    Peace and love!

    Oh wow! When you said that the instrumental parts you've heard in a very long time, that chimed with me. I watch reactions exactly for moments like this. Especially with songs I heard way back in the day, buying the LP, rushing home, couldn't way to play it through for the first time, like you did here, thinking what a stunningly beautiful song. Whilst I'd probably always list Close to the Edge, Awaken and Yours is No Disgrace ahead of this in my all time fav Yes songs, this one I put into a different category where this song is quite simply, the most beautiful song I have ever heard. Thank you for your reaction!

The feelings you have listening to this now, I have been having for the last 48 years or so! 😅 I recited some of the lyrics to my then girlfriend and now wife back in the 90's. My Grandfather was a jazz musician, and he told me once that one criticism he had of my generation's music was that it lacked beauty. Sadly, I never got to play this one for him. I wish I had. This song often brings me (nearly) to tears. Steve How's guitar work is SO expressive. To the lady here (I'm sorry, In all the videos I've seen with you two, I can't remember hearing your names), you asked "How do they write this?" There are three videos that show the band in the studio creating this album. And you see them trying different ways of playing the elements of the songs. Like a movie crew trying several takes of a film. I found it fascinating to see their creative spirit in action! Cheers! It is a joy to watch you!

  • @JJ8KK
    @JJ8KK 2 місяці тому +5

    Turn Of The Century was probably guitarist Steve Howe's most masterful musical creation. The rest of the band filled it out & made it sound exceptionally beautiful. As a Progressive Rock band, YES always pushed the limits of experimentation & due to their perfectionism, they were able to create masterpieces that were extremely dense with contributions of all the band members, often challenging your ears with multiple melodic impulses occurring at the same time (like with the bass playing a melodic riff against a different, but ultimately complimentary melody being played at the same time by the lead guitarist or keyboardist). The reason YES fans are so enamored with the music of YES was because they were the Masters of Complexity, creating extremely dense compositions "with a lot going on" that can only be really appreciated with repeated listenings
    Because that complexity is not entirely welcome to your ears at this point, you ought to stay away from Close To The Edge & Gates Of Delirium, which while beautiful epics, will stun you on a first listen with "everything that's going on." But as you've just heard, they were also quite capable of keeping it simple, as they did with Turn Of The Century. Others of their masterpieces are far more "digestible" (cuz they stick with or keep returning to a repeated melodic theme). Examples: *Yours Is No Disgrace* & *Siberian Khatru.* Others to consider: *I've Seen All Good People,* *And You And I,* *Long Distance Runaround*

      It's interesting to me that at the same time YES we're doing this, the punk rock movement embodied by the "Sex Pistols" was just emerging. It felt like "the new wave" literally swept these sorts of technically brilliant compositions aside, replacing thoughtful creativity with mindless drivel...hahaha, I lived through it and looking back the change was there to see, a whole new generation of music lovers. How great.

    This song is SO beautiful and unique. The arrangement is very dense and there is a constant sense of shifting or flux that carries the ear on through a latticework of melody and chord changes, drawing us inexorably to the emotional climax. The song is full of joy, melancholy, loneliness, and exuberance... we are feeling them almost all at once.

    They don’t write the music down on a score, as only the keyboard player has any classical training. They just play based on melodic themes sketched out as the song is written. Then hours in the studio trying things out. The guitarist certainly did not read music, he mostly improvised until it made sense.
    If that makes sense.

      We like the majority of the music sent to us, but not all of that music or artist will stay with us for longer. It's always nice to go out of our comfort zone and listen to something new. Never know what we may find around the corner 💚👍
