The ultimate tribute to RUSH. They inspired so many musicians they became titans of the industry. Love it!!! Thank for the reaction.

The thing I like about Anthem is that it's the first song on the first album with Neil Peart in the band. Neil joined the band in July of 1974 and the Fly By Night album was released in February of 1975. In that short span of time he had a profound effect on the sound of the band. When you listen to Rush (the album) and then listen to Fly By Night the difference is astounding. Not only does Neil have a much different style than John Rutsey, he just jelled with the band so much better. He gave them the ability to do things musically that Rutsey would have never been able, or have wanted to do. Just listen to the bass and the drums in this song. They are so riffing hard off each other.
Anthem isn't one of my favorite Rush songs but I always like to listen to it because it tells you that Neil Peart is in the band now.

I read a humorous account of when they were doing tryouts for a new drummer to replace Rutsey. Some guy showed up before Neil and had all their songs transcribed onto sheet music for the session. Needless to say they didn’t call him back.

Well, no shlt Neil took it to another level when he joined RUSH, he's "Neil F%ckin' Peart" AKA "The Professor." Still as big of a monster Neil was behind the kit, not to mention his pen skills writing lyrics. The music to the song "Anthem" was originally written by RUSH when Rutsey was still in the band. Again, that's not to say Neil didn't step it up & make it his own, of course he did. I'm just saying... ++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend++ 🤘😜🤘

Crazy as it sounds, the original sounds way more aggressive to me, which I love. The rawness and punchy production are amazing for the time. The supergroup one is over produced for my taste. I absolutely love that they are doing a tribute to them, cuz it shows the love for Rush. The vocals to me are no contest, and you will disagree because it grates on your nerves. But his sheer passionate aggression is incredible. The Cambria cat is a little too girly sounding for me. And let's talk about how important the quieter parts are in any song. Constant noise is not necessary.

Anthrax has a cover of Anthem too.
There's also an album from the 90's called Working Man: A Tribute to Rush where various artists cover Rush. On that album there's an Anthem cover with Mark Slaughter, George Lynch, and few others.

Yes and I am not sure if anyone brought it up but Primus toured with Rush as their opening band a couple of times. Also in 2021-2022 Primus did a tour call "A Tribute To Kings" where they played the entire Rush album "A Farewell to Kings".

They rush is the genius of composing and bringing it - Carey doesn’t write nor compose / Neil is working with half the kit and this is their early years and still bring precision unmatched

Great reaction and I think it is really cool that you reacted to both of these in the same video. The cover version was a really nice tribute to Rush and very well done. They are all great musicians and were having fun with it. Danny Carey is a great drummer and Les Claypool is an amazing bass player. I am sure the others are great as well but I am not very familiar with them. However, there is only one Rush and there will never be another group like them. I mean if you are seriously asking which one was best the answer is Rush for several reasons. Here are just a few: Rush were only three guys and they were working with early to mid seventies technology for the insturmentation, effects and the mixing/ recording equipment; they originally wrote the music and the lyrics; all three of them are master class musicians on their insturments of choice; they influenced and inspired thousands of musicians including the ones playing this cover version. Ofcourse I am completely biased. I really liked Rush every since I first heard them when I was about ten years old and they have been my favorite band of all time since I really started getting into rock music at about sixteen (I am fifty five now). I guess when it comes to music ultimately it is all about personal taste. Also, for me, and I expect many others when you first hear a song and fall in love with it that version will often remain your favorite one even if you hear great versions of the same song by others later.

I'll add that this was 1975. Neil had only been with the band for a few months and they were all in their early 20's. They were nowhere near the musicians they would become. Heck, they hadn't even gotten close to being able to play La Villa Strangiato in one pass, let alone being able to write such a song. Conversely, all the guys doing the cover are at the peak of their abilities. So yeah, it's going to sound different.

Funny, I enjoyed the background more on the cover. The washing machines and the rotisserie chickens put a smile on my face (not sure if you're familiar with those). If not? You'll have to check out more of Rush's live performances. The original is it for me, especially when you think of the recording tech back then.
Anyway, I enjoyed the reaction ✌🏻

There is a RUSH tribute album called Working Man, produced in 1996, mixed by original RUSH producer Terry Brown, performed by Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Steve Morse, James LaBrie, Sebastian Bach, Jake E. Lee, Jack Russell, Mark Slaughter, Gegoor Van Der Loo, among many other big names. It is by far the best collection of RUSH tribute material IMHO, but there have been several very good ones since then. Charlie Benante and friends (usually Alex Skolnik and Ra Diaz) put together quite a few really tasty RUSh covers during the COVID shutdown. I hadn't seen this one before, not bad, but of course I still prefer the original!

  • @debbieplato5107

Anthem is from their second album and the first one after Neil joined the band
They were 22/23 here and just killing it!
The more technical and prog songs did start on this album with Bytor and the Snow Dog but this was a transition album and was a taste of what was to come.
I prefer the Rush version as it has more of a rawness to it but
that was a nice tribute to Rush as 2020 was the year Neil passed.
Both Neil and Danny Carey were friends and so were Geddy and Les Claypool.
I have another who did it better.
The song Crossroads, the Cream version or the Rush version. I know there are other versions but Rush were basing it off the Cream version.
It is from their Feedback album where they did covers of their favourite songs from the 60's
There is a live Rush ersion but I can't remember off what tour.

Let's not forget this is the first song off the First album featuring Neil Peart (second album for the band). They are in their early 20's , just developing their sound.
I love the tribute featured on 2 minutes to late night - a fun show. As a big Rush fan I love to see these covers. You can tell the players love this song.
I really don't think fans should view such covers as a contest of who is better. Lets appreciate the music!
Also, I would be interested to hear your favorite Bass player, - not to criticize, just curious.

Don't worry about any Rush fan outliers that get upset comparing other drummers to Neil, or maybe even having another, like Danny Carrey, as your favorite drummer. Most of us Rush fans, though we are completely sure that Neil Peart is the one true GOAT, we can accept newcomer's to Rush may still question's Neil's status as "the one," also knowing that there are close to 190 Rush songs, including cover songs, for Neil to prove to you unquestionably that he is the GOAT.
But we can also accept a world in which Neil Peart isn't accept as the pinnacle, as long as he's within the top five, better, top three, we can accept and respect your decision because at least you are aware that Neil is a master in his own right. Many of us are also old enough to be aware that your favorite drummer's favorite drummer is Neil Peart...accept unconceded Neil himself who's favorite drummer was the also late great Buddy Rich (not at rock drummer, I believe blues or jazz). Neil has tribute albums I intend to get.

  • @TheWhippinpost

You get to a certain level of musicianship where the differences between performers is not one of who is best, but one of taste. They're all good players. Carey's impromptu drum-roll there was a signature Peart flourish, so probably a nod. The singer sang within his range - I'd do the same (not that I can). I'd be disappointed if they didn't make it their own but, as mentioned, it came at the cost of losing dynamic range and bite.

I don't like the "chika chika chika" guitars from the nu metal in the cover, and Geddy's vocals blow the supergroup guy away. But Carey does a great version of baby Peart and Claypool can probably play anything Geddy can. At least I know it's a thing now.

  • @mattbaker5757

So, then this is really just Super group vs Super group, and I would say it is a tie, both versions are equally good, but, the real Super group is the one that can make it sound just as full and rocking with 3 artists, not 5. So the tie-breaker goes to Rush.

You gotta love the tribute, but I find almost every single cover of a song can never be as good as the original. People can make the arguments about songs like sound of silence or others being better, but really it is more about being different. The intent of the original song is what the original song was. For rush this song is more, laid-back at times and was never meant to be bombastic as you said. I do wonder what this would’ve sounded like if it was recorded by rush and say 2015 where they used more digital effects and layering and heavier sounds. Would they have gone for that or would they have kept it more of a minimalistic approach, which I think serves the lyrics and the overall song better. but I’m biased because I’ve listened to this song 1 million times
