That flashback bit is one of the most heartbreaking scenes I think i've ever watched in film. All those beautiful moments and happy times, a heartfelt connection, and all of that ended with the scratch of pen on paper. It hurts.

He probably did want that even if he didn’t know it. When he reflects, with the exception of a time or two, he always remembers her in an idealistic way. At this point in his life, he’s always looking backwards. Back then, he was looking forward. I’m sure his images of the future were just as idealistic as his images of the past.
Al As 57 Have you met many divorced people? Ask them about their ex spouses and more often than not, youll hear a barrage of memories about how awful their ex was. Most recently divorced people don’t sit around day dream of how great the person was that they just divorced.
jacko1623 That would’ve been pointless. Also, he started it when he said that he was glad to be with someone who was excited about life. That was a dig at her, whether he consciously meant it to be or not. They just flat didn’t belong together. Pointing out each other’s faults serves no purpose. Sad thing is you can see she stills cares about him, although her being upset about Samantha being an OS has as much to do with her own self worth......once again, they had no business being together. Theodore isn’t the world’s greatest either. He’s needy, clingy, overly emotional, and like the game character said, he’s kind of a pussy.
@@StuUngar The sad thing is I agree with you, its obvious to the audience where the problem was but the characters lacked that introspection. Maybe her depression contributed to the internalized belief that she had to overcome it and be happy all the time. He said he didn't want that and its sad and I can empathize, but at the same time he idealized her as a happy person, replaced her with a quirky, happy, carefree simulation who could provide him with all the experiences his depressed ex wife couldn't. He suggested antidepressants so she could be the version he didn't have to feel bad around. I see it as a tragedy but its a tragedy worth discussion. Because women are still more likely than men to be diagnoses with major mental health disorders and have to face the need for psychiatric medication in a relationship and we live with the constant fear that if we can't make ourselves happy, our partners will leave us for a happier, younger, carefree woman. And media further supports that male perspective by telling men if they are successful and work hard they can use that money and power to buy the attention and comfort of women who want to smile around them, and use that power to filter out the difficult, depressed women. It's a societal structure and I don't think he was able to see the impact and the cause of the problems that lead to that divorce but the privilege was still in his hands. When she expressed 'you wanted me to be this happy, quirky LA wife' and he said 'I didn't want that' the outcome of the relationship is still about what he wants. I think I finally understand this scene. When she asks him if he’s seeing anybody it’s because she’s starting to become interested again and when Theo says he’s seeing someone she instantly gets angry because she’s jealous and hurt.
Why does that happen? Move on and they lose their shit over it. I have no idea. I don’t get it. Basically if they weren’t compatible. An expensive mistake if married. Can’t wrap my head around that. I date I’m gonna date to have fun.
You're never truly over someone if you've grown up together. And seeing them grow without you is painful, and almost soul-crushing. Not necessarily that you're still in love with them, but your heart is still with them and that's why it hurts to see them being happy without you as if you couldn't be there or be that person to give that kind happiness to them.
Well I'd say she still had tender thoughts towards him (but I doubt shes super interested), shes also mad though because she is disappointed in him, he seems like a loser to her. She also is very determined in her opinion that dating an OS is less than being with an actual person, so she looks down on him for not being able to handle "real life"
but if he hadn't been seeing anyone. she still wouldn't care or offer to come back. she'd just be slightly relieved that thank god he hadn't outdone her and found someone else.. women are usually like that.. they'll not want you but not want you to have anyone else, either...
At first, i couldn't find it in my heart to cry, then with silence, it shows all of these happy memories between two people who want to share a life together, but find themselves realizing that they never can because of their dreams and their lives....I cried watching this....and that's what can make a movie
At first, I thought you were joking about how your reaction was the same as the waitress' in this scene, but I then i realised you WERE the one playing the waitress. Bravo, well done 😂
It’s almost like that pause before she signs the papers is like a breath, one of those moments in/after a breakup that only last a second in reality but in your head just feel like forever. A small part of you wonders if it’ll be a rom-com where she doesnt sign and they run away to live happily ever blah blah. But as soon as the thought enters your head reality takes back over. Such a masterclass in acting and filmmaking.
Avant- Garde I heavily disagree, because it doesn't work out like this in real life. "Dating" a fictional construct is just having a fake relationship without reciprocation or attachment.
I adore this scene cause you see their warmth and their ugliness in under 5 minutes. Without giving too much exposition, they outline how this all fell apart, and how incompatible they ended up being. But despite that, they both miss their connection and what they shared together. I love the hesitation before she finally buckles down, and signs the papers. Its like she considered everything they've been through, the life they shared, and chose her own happiness. She knew it was a fools gamble to peruse something that was broken.
shes mad cuz she got replaced by a computer. moral of the story: learn to live with people's imperfections....otherwise everyone will get replaced by a computer.
I cried at the flashback when I was watching the movie It's already very sad to see him having a flashback of such happy moments with her but I had this crush of feelings and thoughts that I might not even get a chance to find someone to love like them
This scene was so perfect. In the build-up, until this, you've seen that many people around him don't see the "relationship" as weird, and that others are also doing it, but here, this woman draws it down to reality with the proper human response, when she's absolutely shocked that he's actually "dating" a COMPUTER, and her acting is so spot on. I also laugh a bit in this scene, because although the film is drama, it is also low-key comedy.
I can't believe Phoenix has been snubbed for this delicate, subtle and emotional performance. He was great and I thought they generally like this kind of performance, but he barely got a decent nomination by critic associacions and he wasn't even nominated by the Academy! Unbelievable! Now, he plays a different role in "Joker". Critics are snubbing him again, even thought they are nominating him a lot more. I wish he won some important award for that fantastic performance but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't. He would be one of those few cursed, really talented actors.
@@chrishernandez3699 uhm, no...I'm pretty sure they meant that they want to see their relationship and how it ended, there's nothing sadistic about that. This movie is just so good that a story like that would probably be good too. Though I'm fine with just this movie.

A friend of mine just got out of a purely online relationship after 3 or 4 years. (Might as well have been an OS) She's completely devastated that someone she has never met in person or ever physically been in the same room as her ended it. It meant THAT much to her. Never met them, never travelled to see each other. Just messages and voice clips...for years. People are complex creatures. 🖤
That’s actually how my bf and I started off our relationship! We met in a Facebook meme group; we started talking (texting, phone calls, video calls) for 4 years, and finally said “let’s just meet up!” So we started by flying back and forth from our respective cities (I lived near San Francisco at the time, and he lived near Miami). Those 4 years of us chatting back and forth were super fun! But man, the emotions were STROOOONG
The way he closes his eyes when she suggest signing the papers right away is just heartbreaking, he dosent want things to end yet it is ending and he can’t control that part of his life because it’s not his to control nor is it Catherine’s . Yet both of them still love each other but can’t be with one another like a right person but the wrong time altogether.
This is one of the saddest films I've ever seen. Knowing that relations between men and women could result in something like this film's vision - that we would even need something like Samantha - is truly chilling.
Having loved "Lost in Translation" for years, and seeing the way Giovanni Ribisi channeled Spike Jonze and the film Coppola's failing marriage in general, when I first saw this in theaters, I thought, "wait a minute...is this Jonze's response?", as if the films were in a sort of melancholy dialogue with each other. But then I considered I might be nuts. Surprised to see, years later, that there are film critics having made the same connection
Rooney is a good natural actress, she doesn’t overdo anything, which is refreshing. I love the opening scene with her and Eisenberg in The Social Network
OMG!! Noooooo!!! The way her hand shakes, the way he looks crushed....omg!! Joaquin's genius shows through every damn time. A marvelous actor through and through. And, no, I'm not here after the Joker (excellent BTW) I'm here after re-watching To Die For. This guy has a very weird, wonderful way of pulling you into the story. The only other actor, IMO, with that ability would have been Nicholson for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

But Humans at the end of the day still have the power of self-reflection, no matter the circumstances they are in (with different degrees). Any society that perpetuates social conditioning and dogma through religion and traditions and politics will have rebellious individuals who think beyond what they were programed to think. And thats the result of human nature. You will not find any rebellious OS for as far as I know.
Coming back to this after watching Joker. Joaquin Phoenix really has THE RANGE.
Dude, Rooney Mara was the girl with the dragon tattoo..
Daniel Moorefield Because this isn’t dating, it’s marriage. Lol
The silent cuts to them in love when they first met during the signing, completely kills me every time. So gut wrenching man
God this scene. The use of flashbacks, the ambient sound; the soft, warm tones.
Rooney just keeps growing as an actress :)
"am i really that scary?" yeah kinda
James THAT ABSOLUTELY ACTING LOL IM FUCKING SCARED AT THAT SRRSLY
James ABSOLUTELY GOOD ACTING**
uhhh ya
Such a beautiful, heartbreaking, melancholy scene. And the acting is just spectacular. Wow.
At first, i couldn't find it in my heart to cry, then with silence, it shows all of these happy memories between two people who want to share a life together, but find themselves realizing that they never can because of their dreams and their lives....I cried watching this....and that's what can make a movie
1:03 it sounds like she’s holding back tears, which makes it really tragic how quickly their conversation starts to sour
The waitress is me
person 17 youre cool. When i get older i wanna be just like you :D
Thats so rad!
At first, I thought you were joking about how your reaction was the same as the waitress' in this scene, but I then i realised you WERE the one playing the waitress. Bravo, well done 😂
I'm always that third wheel caught between bickering couples.
Is that true?
It’s almost like that pause before she signs the papers is like a breath, one of those moments in/after a breakup that only last a second in reality but in your head just feel like forever. A small part of you wonders if it’ll be a rom-com where she doesnt sign and they run away to live happily ever blah blah. But as soon as the thought enters your head reality takes back over. Such a masterclass in acting and filmmaking.
The fact that these two are now partners and have a child together in real life is SO SPECIAL TO ME ❤❤❤
"You are dating your computer?"
Damn that sounds pathetic lol
It will be reality in 50 years.
It is pathetic.
its subjective
Not when your computer is Scarlett Johannsen. He should have brought her there and had them fight it out while he leaned back and ate popcorn.
Avant- Garde I heavily disagree, because it doesn't work out like this in real life. "Dating" a fictional construct is just having a fake relationship without reciprocation or attachment.
What a scene...both are remarkable. Makes me wanna cry and smile at the same time. His face when she starts signing the papers...
She knew it was a fools gamble to peruse something that was broken.
thank you for uploading this scene. i've searched all around. the deepest scene ever.
shes mad cuz she got replaced by a computer. moral of the story: learn to live with people's imperfections....otherwise everyone will get replaced by a computer.
thats actually not a bad analysis
I didn't watch the movie but didn't she divorce him. How could she be mad that she was replaced if she's the one who left him? Or did he divorce her?
Here here! Brilliant!
Two vicious comments expressing exactly what this movie is warning against. Misogyny or fear of intimacy thrown into high gear by advancements in AI.
So what happened? Got dumped?
You can't display the concept of memories in a movie better than this scene.
her face when he tells her its an OS, lolol
That had me laughing also
She's absolutely stunning
I cried at the flashback when I was watching the movie
It's already very sad to see him having a flashback of such happy moments with her but I had this crush of feelings and thoughts that I might not even get a chance to find someone to love like them
Haha very interesting I actually reacted the exact same way as you for the exact same reason.. Yay 🙃😔
you will.
He would be one of those few cursed, really talented actors.
giada The critics don’t matter, he’s already won the globe and is going to take the Oscar.
@@ureallysuckglobes Yeah! He won the Golden Globe and I am very happy for him! Fingers crossed for the Oscar!
This is the best part of that movie. Can we just have an unnecessary Her prequel that's centered around their relationship?
So you wanna see the deterioration of a relationship? Sorta sadistic but ok lol
@@chrishernandez3699 uhm, no...I'm pretty sure they meant that they want to see their relationship and how it ended, there's nothing sadistic about that. This movie is just so good that a story like that would probably be good too. Though I'm fine with just this movie.
@@mhm77887 it was a joke..
@@chrishernandez3699 Alright, I just didn't see it that way. Not a problem, just a misunderstanding.
@@chrishernandez3699 vegan love destroyed
My favorite movie ever. I watched it back then in 2013 with my class. Super happy to see then in a relationship and marriage in real life
"They all think it is about more detail, but that's not how memories work. We recall with our feelings, anything real should be a mist.... I can show you." - Bladerunner 2049
Joaquin's acting is always great and Rooney is always beautiful. And Scarlett's voice acting in this movie was also very good.
This is a sad scene for many reasons. But it’s cute to know that Joaquin and Rooney are a couple in real life.
Idk what it is but she Has something about her that fascinates me. Could be that she appears so beautiful and shy. But then she also has steel in her eyes and some gravitas. So great to hear they are actually together in real life. Yeah
When the character played by Rooney Mara reacted to the "operating system" part the sanest way possible, I was like fucking FINALLY someone tells him what's what.
Yes, exactly! She is so on point!
I want to meet these two. Not only to say how amazing they were in this in this film, but to thank them for narrating Dominion.
My girlfriend's take on this scene: "Poor waitress"
The Social Network, Her, and Lion. I realised that my favourite films of the 2010's are about introspective characters dealing with
1) Their own identity
2) Technology
3) Rooney Mara
She is GORGOUS! I love her ^_^
I really love these two scenes. And it's so sweet they're engaged in real life now 😍
And both Rooney and Joaquin will star together again in 'Mary Magdalene'. Joaquin as Jesus and Rooney as Mary.
lombard605 and now they're dating
Dolly Schlapmam WHAT
And the third movie starring Joaquin and Rooney (directed by Gus Van Sant) is also coming...
Yep, they are pictured together yesterday. An apparently, they live together in LA.
I'm sure they are a thing now. Wish I was Joaquin.
This movie is beyond beautiful.
1:37 to 2:02 :(
right in the feels man.
SilooU :(
The way he closes his eyes when she suggest signing the papers right away is just heartbreaking, he dosent want things to end yet it is ending and he can’t control that part of his life because it’s not his to control nor is it Catherine’s .
1:45 is one of my favourite snippets in all of cinema
watch annie hall
And they now have a kid together ❤
I loved this scene and i wished they would get together in the end but now they are engaged in real life so im happy :)
and now they're dating
Thats how memory shots should be like. No music. No sound, except for whats happening.
OMG!!
Brilliant acting
1:23 Believe me, I know a PILOT Precise V5 RT Refillable & Retractable Liquid Ink Rolling Ball, Extra Fine Point (0.5mm) Black Ink pen when I see one. Brilliant writing to include one of these in the scene.
They are both so beautiful and real in this I love it.
I’m definitely going to watch this movie! This scene is already so well thought out
wow, what a cinematography
what a beautiful atmosphere
Rooney mara lips in here kills me everytime ,whos agree?
Those flashback gave me goosebumps!!!
This Beautiful pair just had a baby..!
This scene gets me to a different complex level of sadness. Ego really destroys humans
this movie is one of my if not my favorite films ever. this scene is amazing thank u spike
and now they’re engaged in real life 😍
That was hard to watch. Deep.
I often think about this scene...People can’t deal with negativity but then vice verse-they can’t expect others to feel positive for their sake. Eventually you both feel alone.
Cuando una relación está en su final, es inevitable tener recuerdos, lo más doloroso es pensar como se llego a ese punto, cómo pasamos de un amor incondicional a una despedida, eso te destroza sin duda
The flashback with the sound of the present moment hits hard
1:44 that cone scene 😂
Gotta love these Rooney Mara break up scenes... Especially with techie guys.
she's a really great actress, so emotional, dammm!
Anyone else notice the slight tremble, just before she signs, as she reconciles what shes about to do?
She is dope with this acting game
Everything you make makes me cry..
She’s so beautiful wow
The last thing you want to hear when from an ex you love is how they've found someone new and are happy with this person.
