    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mark (Jesse Eisenberg) acts like an arrogant jerk to his girlfriend, Erica (Rooney Mara), causing him to get dumped.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) teams with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) to explore the meaning of success in the early 21st century from the perspectives of the technological innovators who revolutionized the way we all communicate. The year was 2003. As prohibitively expensive technology became affordable to the masses and the Internet made it easy to stay in touch with people who were halfway across the world, Harvard undergrad and computer programming wizard Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) launched a website with the potential to alter the very fabric of our society. At the time, Zuckerberg was just six years away from making his first million. But his hearty payday would come at a high price, because despite all of Zuckerberg's wealth and success, his personal life began to suffer as he became mired in legal disputes, and discovered that many of the 500 million people he had friended during his rise to the top were eager to see him fall. Chief among that growing list of detractors was Zuckerberg's former college friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), whose generous financial contributions to Facebook served as the seed that helped the company to sprout. And some might argue that Zuckerberg's bold venture wouldn't have evolved into the cultural juggernaut that it ultimately became had Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) not spread the word about Facebook to the venture capitalists from Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer and Josh Pence) engage Zuckerberg in a fierce courtroom battle for ownership of Facebook that left many suspecting the young entrepreneur might have let his greed eclipse his better judgment. The Social Network was based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich.

Jesse Eisenberg is really, really good at portraying a guy who is utterly oblivious to just how _insanely_ patronizing he is.

YES and he knows how to speak very fast, Gaslight-ive, patronizing, manipulative, with sociopathic tendencies. Every role he plays is meant for him. There are some roles I don’t see him playing. Then again the producers and director didn’t think Rooney Mara could play Lisbeth Salander. They called her back for a literal two months and told her to cancel her interview/photo shoot to come back one more time and she did. She got the part knowing she’d have to cut and shave her hair, she decided to get some REAL piercings for the role. So if she can do it perhaps Jesse can too. I’ve never been to fond of him but he’s a great actor.

I have always wondered at what period in history did the term "patronizing" suddenly become a term associated with a negative connotation...
According to Websters 1828 dictionary: Patronizing, PAT'RONIZING, participle present tense Defending; supporting; favoring; promoting.
Today "patronizing" (along with many other formerly favorable terms) seem to bear a meaning which is precisely the opposite as what they did roughly two centuries ago.

    • @omg9261
      @omg9261 7 місяців тому

@@jimvick8397 why? I'm not a native but I don't see any contradiction. When there are two adults , it's not normal when one is "patronizing". When someone is "patronizing" to you that means he doesn't see you as an equal, he diminishes your position while pretending to "care" about you. Either it is a passive aggresive manipution technique which is trying to weaken you without being openly hostile or they simply try to boost their confidence at your expence, using you as an "incompetent" "foil". In any case it's infuriating.
      P. S. And before, like a century ago, it probably was more normal becouse the culture was more "patriarchical", people didn't strive for equlity and equal share of respect for everyone.

I love how Rooney Mara refrains from swearing, she subtly stops herself. Not because she's trying to be a better person, but because she knows her point won't get through to Mark. Brilliant opening scene.

Should she have sat there quietly and taken it? No. She'd had enough and she called him out, and it was well deserved. The "I have NO intention of being friends with you" line came after she tried being polite, and HE snapped that he didn't want to be friends. You don't owe politeness to someone who's showing you none, and a person doesn't lack class for standing up for themselves.

Nacha255 Those remarks all came AFTER she had broken up with him and said it was like dating a Stairmaster, which was my point. He made one insensitive (but probably correct) remark about the final club openning doors for them prior to that (and she had just said he could only get into the easiest one). Of course I’m pretty sure Sorkin would use that kind of language on a daily basis regardless of who he was breaking up with.

Stability and comfort. Back in the day, if you were fairly hot, a nerd was a safe bet if you wanted a stable boyfriend you wouldn't have a lot of competition for. What they lacked in fun, social graces, and sex appeal, they made up for in usefulness: homework help, etc. The nerds knew this, and would almost never cheat, mostly because no one else wanted them but also because a hot girlfriend was really hard for them to get, so they were much less inclined to risk their relationship for some side action. But since the mid 2000's, the SMV of the nerd has risen dramatically, and created the Player Nerd: a subspecies of male somehow managing to embody the worst traits of both the nerd and the fuckboi, with none of the good.

But when Erica gets fed up with Mark, it builds up and then Jack White's screaming guitar solo starts and you can hear the song clearly. The music gets angry at the exact moment Erica does. It’s funny you say that, because he’s stated he tried to write this scene and have them sound like young adults from today and it sucked. So he made them sound like your “typical” Sorkin characters exchanging dialogue. He’s just such a great writer that it doesn’t matter what generation the characters represent, he can write great dialogue and you don’t worry if they sound like millennials breaking up or not.

Steven I don't think you mean it but you're sucking his sack pretty hard right now. I'm pretty sure that Sven was talking about what Sven would consider loneliness, but in reality loneliness is a subjective feeling. There is so much that is subjective in human nature that hints towards why there is so much hostility in interpersonal interactions. The only reason I commented is because you, like many others, fail to see someone else's point of view and end up looking like just another suck up.
If your immediate response is "Chill out bro its just a joke", then you are dodging responsibility and if you decide to attack me or send a slick remark then you are probably guided by feelings which cloud objective judgement.
Just take it in and walk away.
