One's a glass mixed attacker and the other is one of the slowest starters ever with mediocre offensive stats and bad typing. Torterra was done dirty, should've been a rock type.
@@alexwijaya6857 Rock and Ground types are fairly similar, with the greatest physical difference being their skin texture. I'm sure Gamefreak could've tweaked Torterra's sprite slightly to make it look rockier, it already has a mountain on its back.

@@lillyie I know but its still just weird hearing such stuff of course you cant compare singles with Doubles its already incomparable because of the existence of Moves like Helping hand or Rage powder/Follow Me which only work for doubles while Moves like Spikes,Stealth rock etc which technically work in doubles are mostly used in singles i just wanted to point it out as something showing just how different both Gamemodes are
Maybe if it wasn't in a format dominated by a Fairy type delete button, and if Rapid didn't exist, it might have eventually found a niche, but yeah, H-Sam just isn't anything special in Doubles
I don’t think I ever registered how similar Meganium’s stats are to Venusaur’s. They basically took 20 of Venusaur’s special attack and put it in defense. That’s obviously massive in VGC where games are so fast-paced, and Venusaur’s Poison typing is mostly helpful. But it’s wild how one of the best Grass types ever looks so statistically similar to the worst Grass-type starter. They really gave Venusaur everything under the sun.
Venu having Sleep Powder, Chlorophyll, and STAB Sludge Bombs goes a loooong way especially with that extra spattk. Not to mention it got both a Mega and GMax to keep it relevant over gens
That's because Meganium and the other gen 2 staters base stats are literally copy pasted from the gen 1 starters. Feraligatr's stats are the same values as Blastoise, just flipped to be offensive and Typhlosion is the exact same as Charizard.
It actually has almost the same stats as Incineroar, 5 more HP, 5 less attack, and 5 more special attacks. Give it regenerator and some decent support moves and it'd be amazing in VGC
Nah, its have high speed mid defence, good for supporting Its have glare, a recovery move(im forget the name but grass type move), and coil. Atleast its do something for me
I feel like this really highlights the differences between singles and VGC, because Samurott-H is absolutely monstrous in singles, and Feraligatr is niche but pretty good.
Yeah honestly Feraligatr as 3rd worst surprised me. That thing is a demon in the lower tiers. But if this is only talking about doubles then it makes more sense.
One of the major problems with Sceptile, was that in order to make him viable in gen 3, even though he looked like a physical damage type pokemon, they had to give him a higher special attack stat than a physical attack stat. The reason for that was that if an attack was special or physical was solely based on the element, there were no physical grass attacks, and pretty much everything he could learn was considered a special attack. Now gen 4 came along, which changed all of it, and when you, even today, look at his learnable moves, like 75% of them are physical. They never switched his attack stats and it shows, on top of that they never really improved on him and just made him trash. Gen 3 Sceptile with Leaf Blade, Crunch, Dragon Claw and Thunder Punch was a sight to behold, and was by far the most viable and fun starter to have compared to the horrible movesets the other 2 had, which is the complete opposite of what we have today with those 3 starters.
Even when just messing around in story mode/single-player, it feels detrimental to teach Leaf Blade to Sceptile instead of a Special Grass move. There's a bit of a problem when I'm thinking that in story mode about what could be considered a Mon's signature move.
Hilarious that meganium is only marginally bulkier than serperior but that's somehow its defining characteristics because there's literally nothing else there. It's like the attention on Ledian's punching moves.
Because of serperior’s speed and access to light screen and reflect its more likely to set up and survive than meganium is anyway since meganium is likely to be sniped. Plus serperior having better speed allows its contrary damage to rise and even before contrary sword dance or coil helped it a lot
When Wo-Chien tries switching in on one of the following: Landorus-T Earthquake Urshifu’s Wicked Blow or Surging Strikes. Dragapult’s Dragon Darts Rillaboom’s Grassy Glide or Wood Hammer. POW! Right in the kisser. Wo-Chien was slain by U-turn.
You also need to give it Calm Mind and/or Earth Power since it doesn't have them already. Grass and Fairy are both negged by Fire, Poison, and Steel types. Without a way to set up or hit those types for SE damage (I mean, it does have EQ), it's just going to be a particularly fat lizard rather than a real threat.
@@iancastro1327 Watch False Swipes Gaming's video about Maganium or look up some Smogon articles about the gen 2 meta game/Meganium. Tough ''good'' is subjective. All 3 starters where bad. Only Meganium had some good matchups since the gen 2 meta is all about bulk.
@@thundereagle4130 That's not when it came out. We didn't get "metas" until ADV. That was when the game as we know it started being played. Everything before then was just using stadium as a medium.
@@MegaSpamziken1996 first off, that was most likely an oversight. Prior to Gen 5, Gamefreak didn't realize how powerful Speed Boost could be, as the only Pokémon that could get it before Blaziken were Pokémon with bad stats and even worse typing, namely Ninjask ans Yanmega. Second of all, Gamefreak doesn't balance for singles.

They hated him too...at first. Legit went out of their way to get him killed and nothing worked. And by the end, they loved their little lump of stupid so much that Lani named his real dog after him
it's alright. all these mons have their different purposes. Some of them are decent in singles, some are good when playing through the game, and decidueye is really cool in pokemon unite. It's unfortunate what happened to magnium. It's a sun based grass type born in a gen without abilities or strong weather. As the gens went on it never got the buffs or expanded movepools that other starters got and so it just kinda stayed bad. Conceptually meganium would be a good mon for running things like bodyslam, synthesis, solar beam, stun spore, leech seed, (follow me if we're talking doubles), rest, maybe even earthquake or some other coverage move for damage. It would basically sit there and deal chip damage while healing in the sun and spreading status. In theory a pretty cool mon.
Outside of competitive, Feraligator is actually arguably the best gen 2 starter sonce he learns Ice Fang shortly before the elite four, meaning the champion gets completely creamed immediately without you needing to keep an Ice type with you
Meganium was my first starter Pokemon so I love it, and it hurts to always know it's going to be listed as the worst starter Pokemon. Already knew it was going to be #1 on this list :/ Maybe one day they'll give it Grass-Fairy regional form with good stats and moves.
I’d believe it. Majority of what is covered in this video is not relevant to what makes people decide their favorite starter. The start of the video says as much, it’s just looking at competitive viability.
Samurott and Decidueye are my 2 favorite starters. Both were given non sensical trash stat distributions, useless abilities and a mid movepool and nothing to compensate
14:21 As a UNITE player, I'm genuinely terrified of Decidueye, it can just cut your HP by third out of nowhere, and keep doing so until you locate where this thing is...
Yep. As someone who likes the line, it get ALL the relevant moves (Reflect, Light Screen, Giga Drain and Heal Pulse if you get it as an Egg Move) with 120 in both defenses being better than Meganium's 100. Like, if you wanted Meganium to Do It's Job, the job its movepool says it should do, cute 40 Speed and a lot of Atk since it uses neither, give that to defenses and SpAtk, put it in Trick Room, and let it be the annoying screen-setter/drainer it WANTS to be.
A lot of these bad mons really need a new hidden ability, since that's the biggest thing holding them back. Meganium could get Thick Fat, Emboar could get Rock Head, Feraligatr could get Strong Jaw, and A-Decidueye could get Sniper or Quick Draw
I don't think thick fat would do a lot for Meganium, honestly, since Venu has it too plus better defensive matchups. Also dosen't Feraligatr get Sheer Force?
90% of all these mons problems is stats. They need to either buff or lower speed stats, and just some mons that have a dumb special/physical attack Stat split where theyre both like 110. Make one 135, and the other 60. Trying to make them Jack's of all trades hurts them into unusable territory.
Is it bad that after talking about Samurott and Decidueye I whole heartedly expected number 1 to be my boy Typhlosion COMPLETELY FORGETTING that Meganium existed? lol
The thing is Typhlosion actually has a niche as a fast Eruption user, having great speed and usable SpAtt and access to the aforementioned Eruption, it is actually usable unlike most of the stuff on this list.
Magician Delfox was fun in generation 6! I stole so many Assault Vests and survived hits that would have otherwise knocked out Delfox! I was an anti meta player and saw the “communication error has occurred” screen a lot back then XD
hint: it's a dual Fire type, introduced after gen 2 and before gen 8, has one of the most broken abilities and used to have a signature move, before it was turned into a TM the following gen
My beef with Sceptile is how they kinda ruined its identity the next generation. Sceptile was supposed to be a fast PHYSICAL attacker, Leaf Blade and all that, learns good cutting/slashing moves. Oh but now we're in Gen 4 so those moves are useless now cause you're still a special attacker ._. idk why they didn't AT LEAST swap Sceptile's Atk and Spl Atk going into Gen 4. Resulted later in Mega Sceptile being a lizard with a rocket tail ???
Sceptile was never a physical attacker. In gen 3 it was still a special attacker, but grass moves were all special in gen 3 so leaf blade was actually good on it. Then when the physical/special split came in gen 4 they made leaf blade physical which made it a worse option on Sceptile but a good option for the other pokemon that got access to it in gen 4, with Sceptile now having energy ball to replace leaf blade. Energy ball and leaf blade even have the same base power so Sceptile didn't lose anything, if anything it preferres energy ball over leaf blade because of energy ball's chance to lower the target's special defense instead of leaf blade's higher critical hit chance.
Yep. As a Meganium Enjoyer, the best way to fix it stats in my opinion is to take 40 Speed and 40-ish Attack off, put its defenses at 130 each and up up SpAtack and HP by the rest. Let it be a Trick Room Screen Setter/Drainer since it has SO many draining moves, especially if you add on Draining Kiss as a Fairy STAB drain. Also just Give It Energy Ball. Its only "good" Grass attack being Solar Beam is bad.
Dang your videos are so well done, I haven't played Pokemon in 20 years and find myself binge watching this channel all of a sudden just off how entertaining the videos are even for someone that knows little to nothing about the subject haha
One thing i like to use and saw with delphox was overheat + white herb. The ability Magician works woth special attacks as well, and for some reason if you use overheat, which activates the white herb from the special attack drop, it still steals the item even after the white herb is consumed. So this gives you a free over heat attack with no drawbacks and it steals an item
I vividly remember seeing someone try this, steal life orb and immediately take the 10% recoil from Life Orb without the damage boost. What a programming quirk
The Internet is just abusing a non Canon folk tale based on a real folk tale, and by god is the Internet being racist against Canadian natives and thinking there's only one typholsion in existence. And EVERYONE nowadays is a typhosion magnet
If a new starter trio got mega evolutions, I'd like it to be the Johto Trio. I think they need the most help out of them all and some concept arts I've seen of them look absolutely dope. They look good, but all Typhlosions got is the fire on his back and Meganiums only got a flower on it's neck. Without those features on those two pokemon. they'd look plain as heck.
Just make the starters of Legends Zygarde something like Feraligatr, Meganium and Delphox and give them regionals with cool typing, decent abilities and better stat specialization I still can´t believe they made an alligator a starter and DIDN´T make it a purely physical powerhouse, especially with how its line´s dex entries always talk about its absurd biting-strength.

Feraligatr as well for that matter.
We need the fairy type for her if we her in ZA
Hearing this makes me want to make a competitive Meganium. Hell all of them!
Hehe. Everything under the SUN indeed

When Gen 5 came out, I hacked in a Sandile as my starter, because it was more interesting to me than the starters they offered.
I feel like this really highlights the differences between singles and VGC, because Samurott-H is absolutely monstrous in singles, and Feraligatr is niche but pretty good.
And emboar was huge for speed running for awhile
Yes, but time sadly keeps going, the model A was probably a beast back in the day…. Too bad nostalgia doesn’t affect stats
emboar had it's time in slightly lower tiers too as a decent pokémon. Just a good wallbreaker.
Sceptile was trash in gen3 and it remains trash today. I even restarted my Ruby playthrough ~20 years ago because Sceptile was so garbage.
NO NOT TYPHLOSION IN THE THUMBNAIL
Hilarious that meganium is only marginally bulkier than serperior but that's somehow its defining characteristics because there's literally nothing else there.
It's like the attention on Ledian's punching moves.
Because of serperior’s speed and access to light screen and reflect its more likely to set up and survive than meganium is anyway since meganium is likely to be sniped. Plus serperior having better speed allows its contrary damage to rise and even before contrary sword dance or coil helped it a lot
Wolfey you’re going to start my villain meganium arc. I will win a tournament with meaganium.

Do people actually do that?
@kailesperance1922 yes Bayleaf actually really good in competitive
A lot of these bad mons really need a new hidden ability, since that's the biggest thing holding them back. Meganium could get Thick Fat, Emboar could get Rock Head, Feraligatr could get Strong Jaw, and A-Decidueye could get Sniper or Quick Draw
Meganium should get that one ability where support moves get priority
I don't think thick fat would do a lot for Meganium, honestly, since Venu has it too plus better defensive matchups. Also dosen't Feraligatr get Sheer Force?
90% of all these mons problems is stats. They need to either buff or lower speed stats, and just some mons that have a dumb special/physical attack Stat split where theyre both like 110. Make one 135, and the other 60. Trying to make them Jack's of all trades hurts them into unusable territory.

At least the Chikorita line redeems itself in Mystery Dungeon where she can be a good enough partner... I guess?
I mean Mystery dungeon balancing is strange, skitty of all Pokémon is the completely over powered starter.
This so much. GF's design sense for Sceptile is criminally bad.

I'm remember this!
I vividly remember seeing someone try this, steal life orb and immediately take the 10% recoil from Life Orb without the damage boost.
What a programming quirk
Typhlosion gets too much hate, it’s sick
Just make the starters of Legends Zygarde something like Feraligatr, Meganium and Delphox and give them regionals with cool typing, decent abilities and better stat specialization
I still can´t believe they made an alligator a starter and DIDN´T make it a purely physical powerhouse, especially with how its line´s dex entries always talk about its absurd biting-strength.
