I have no idea what was the deal with the guy who assigned the stats for the Gen 7 Pokémon. Truly an unhinged individual.
Like, why is everything so slow? Why is Silvally so mid?? And why, for fuck’s sake, did Decidueye’s stat spread absolutely go against its design as an agile archer owl???
I remember when the gen 7 games were just coming out, everyone called it the Aslowla region.

Hilarious that meganium is only marginally bulkier than serperior but that's somehow its defining characteristics because there's literally nothing else there.
It's like the attention on Ledian's punching moves.
Because of serperior’s speed and access to light screen and reflect its more likely to set up and survive than meganium is anyway since meganium is likely to be sniped. Plus serperior having better speed allows its contrary damage to rise and even before contrary sword dance or coil helped it a lot
The "What Is The Best Starter Pokémon" video is basically a single 10 minute PNG of Incineroar.
Unless we're talking for the campaign specifically, in which case Swampert takes the crown no contest (Meganium is still the worst in that case lol)
@@MilkyWayGrumpI'd argue Infernape takes the spot for best starter for the story since he's both incredibly fast and hits like a truck, with so much coverage you can reliably sweep even the battles that give it the most trouble.

Wolfey: Hisuian Samurott is bad.
Showdown players: *laughs*
Yeah is he terrible. I rly love Samurott so it would be cool if he was somewhat viable. Is he only good in singles?
@@bobblade2681 in a meta where hazards are everywhere, Hamurott is one of the best
@@bobblade2681 VGC is too fast to be interested in Spikes most of the time. There's only 4/6 pokemon in a battle to switch around and switching is riskier/rarer when your opponent can make two attacks in that turn. Compared to singles where switching is extremely common and whole strategies can be based around having good access to Spikes. What if this already good move, Spikes, that boosts the viability of it's users significantly, was able to do significant damage in the same turn! Why decide between clicking a solid attack or setting up hazards when you can do both with one simple button?
Incineroar is awful in singles so it’s a fair trade.
See, this is the part of the video that confuses me. Hisuian Samurott, unlike his Unovan counterpart, actually has a niche and means of usage, and not just that, he is in OU along the likes of Serperior and Rillaboom. He puts so little attention on how useful he is as a field setter thanks to his signature move, as well as how good sharpness really is for Samurott as almost all his physical moves are slashing moves. He is a fantastic mon for messing with the opposing mons on the field and can provide good physical support when needed.
Samurott I expected to be somewhere in the bottom, despite how much I like him, but Hisuian is genuinely really good and was in the top 10 most used Pokemon in ou for quite a while after Home opened up. Even now, he is still around the reaches of 10th to 20th and so.
Edit: Forgot he was only talking about VGC doubles. Yeah, he does suffer there. But in singles, he is a monster of the wastes
A lot of these bad mons really need a new hidden ability, since that's the biggest thing holding them back. Meganium could get Thick Fat, Emboar could get Rock Head, Feraligatr could get Strong Jaw, and A-Decidueye could get Sniper or Quick Draw
Meganium should get that one ability where support moves get priority
I don't think thick fat would do a lot for Meganium, honestly, since Venu has it too plus better defensive matchups. Also dosen't Feraligatr get Sheer Force?
90% of all these mons problems is stats. They need to either buff or lower speed stats, and just some mons that have a dumb special/physical attack Stat split where theyre both like 110. Make one 135, and the other 60. Trying to make them Jack's of all trades hurts them into unusable territory.
@@videorelaxant2780 if you’re talking about Mycelium Might, it’s the opposite, status moves get negative priority for some reason lol

@@bradevit2446 TF wouldnt help meganium almost at all. Its better on a pokemon like Saur because of the poison typing. I honestly dont know what can be done to help Meganium at all. Maybe Fairy typing, or buff leaf guard to weaken spreadmoves in the sun ?

And emboar was huge for speed running for awhile
Incineroar was intentionally designed by Gamefreak to be busted. Even in the anime, Incineroar is described as "the ultimate Fire Pokémon".
does the anime also explain why Blaziken got Speed Boost as a HA and got banned from singles for 3 gens straight?
@@MegaSpamziken1996 first off, that was most likely an oversight. Prior to Gen 5, Gamefreak didn't realize how powerful Speed Boost could be, as the only Pokémon that could get it before Blaziken were Pokémon with bad stats and even worse typing, namely Ninjask ans Yanmega.

Typhlosion: Ohh my God...
Loved Typhlosion in triples. Fire Gem boosted Eruption in sunlight, wiped literally half my opponent’s team in a single move.
Bro Hisuian Typhy is good if used right though. I've had it deal with Fluttermane,Basculegion, and even managed to get it to one shot Rapid Strike Urshifu with Eruption so it's really really devastating In singles. Yiu just gotta play around it and be clever. If done right you can end up getting into situations where Typhlosion overwhelms the opponent

Interesting because that game had the mach bike which at the time made the player move faster than ever before previously.
Additionally, all the Kanto Starter's abilities center around the use of Weather.
Venusaur - Chlorophyll, Charizard - Solar Power & Blastoise - Rain Dish
& the abilities of Galar Starters mostly revolve around higher damage output. Rillaboom gets to use boosted Grass moves under the Grassy Terrain, Cinderace is able to receive STAB on any type, & Inteleon with Sniper does increased damage whenever it lands critical hits.
Hisuian Samurott is like the epitome of a singles mon. In singles it can change the game, in doubles ur basically already down 3 to 4. But cool otter mustache 😎
Hazards are kind of worthless in Doubles since you don't switch nearly as often as in Singles. In Singles, Hamurott is a menace since it will do a huge chunk of damage + set up spikes 90% of the time. Even max bulk Pelipper is eating 31 - 37% of its HP from a single Ceaseless Edge from a Jolly Samurott. Rillaboom is eating 45 - 53% without bulk investment.
I was about to comment about how good it is in singles. Thanks!
Contrary to popular VGC belief, gamefreak does actually consider competitive singles sometimes when it comes to designing mons and moves.
Incineroar is the opposite of Hamurott, which is funny since they're both dark type starters. The Heel Wrestling cat dominates VGC while in Singles, it's in Neverused tier.
Iirc Feraligatr also has a notable presence in singles
“Decky-dooie” is unironically the best way to call Decidueye. Sounds like that name could be used for another mon as well lol.
Unburden felt like a betrayal for Sceptile, especially after Blaziken got Speed Boost. Exactly like you said, Sceptile's already fast out of the gate... What I think would have been the better idea, would've been to give Sceptile Sharpness instead. STAB for 50%, Overgrow for 50%, and Sharpness for 50%, and you'd be looking at a 150% damage increase to certain moves, like Leaf Blade. And for Mega, if Sceptile's had DROUGHT instead of lightning rod, you'd be able to land Solar Blade successively with NO charge up, which stacks with STAB, Overgrow, and Sharpness... on top of that, the dragon type provided with Mega would help defend sceptile from any fire types boosted by the drought effect.
9:29 OK but that sprite art of Delphox goes so hard. Way better than it's 3D counterpart, even in SV.

I think it's worth mentioning that Feraligatr is useful in competitive Pokemon GO now
Also meganium was way stronger in the early seasons of GO Battle League
As an Emboar fan I'll always be so pissed about it having 100 special attack... just WHY ?! Those Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories sfx hit me with such a strong wave of nostalgia 😄 Great vid Wolfe!
As someone who had Chikorita as my FIRST Pokémon EVER.

I don’t think I ever registered how similar Meganium’s stats are to Venusaur’s. They basically took 20 of Venusaur’s special attack and put it in defense. That’s obviously massive in VGC where games are so fast-paced, and Venusaur’s Poison typing is mostly helpful. But it’s wild how one of the best Grass types ever looks so statistically similar to the worst Grass-type starter. They really gave Venusaur everything under the sun.
Venu having Sleep Powder, Chlorophyll, and STAB Sludge Bombs goes a loooong way especially with that extra spattk. Not to mention it got both a Mega and GMax to keep it relevant over gens
That's because Meganium and the other gen 2 staters base stats are literally copy pasted from the gen 1 starters. Feraligatr's stats are the same values as Blastoise, just flipped to be offensive and Typhlosion is the exact same as Charizard.
Hehe. Everything under the SUN indeed
@@Mintysaur I didn’t realize the pun until I said it, but I stand by it 😝
It’s weird that Wolfey never mentions when over looking stats that having an equal amount of your stat pool committed to both special attack and physical attack stats often is what makes these Pokemon lack specialization in all other stats. Almost always it is better to have one type of attack significantly higher than the other to “free up” stats points for other areas.

I’d believe it. Majority of what is covered in this video is not relevant to what makes people decide their favorite starter. The start of the video says as much, it’s just looking at competitive viability.
Samurott and Decidueye are my 2 favorite starters. Both were given non sensical trash stat distributions, useless abilities and a mid movepool and nothing to compensate

So interesting to me to see how a lot of nuzlocke champions made it pretty high onto this list. I haven't delved too deep into VGC content, Wolfey is kind of gateway, so I find these differences super cool.

You also need to give it Calm Mind and/or Earth Power since it doesn't have them already. Grass and Fairy are both negged by Fire, Poison, and Steel types. Without a way to set up or hit those types for SE damage (I mean, it does have EQ), it's just going to be a particularly fat lizard rather than a real threat.

This may be a hot take, butni kinda feel that starter pokemon should start strong, but taper off as the game progresses. The starter pokemon are special, you are choosing the partner that got you on youre adventure. However as you get more badges, more access to better pokemon, the training wheels should come off at some point and reward you for actually catching new and better pokemon. As they are now, most (emphasis on MOST) starters kinda just become auto-include through the whole game, and only AFTER you beat the game do you really consider other options

Like, if you wanted Meganium to Do It's Job, the job its movepool says it should do, cute 40 Speed and a lot of Atk since it uses neither, give that to defenses and SpAtk, put it in Trick Room, and let it be the annoying screen-setter/drainer it WANTS to be.
I love how this isn’t a “Best Starter” video because if you’re familiar with Wolfey, you already know the answer
There's no competition for best double battles Starter.
hint: it's a dual Fire type, introduced after gen 2 and before gen 8, has one of the most broken abilities and used to have a signature move, before it was turned into a TM the following gen
Learn something new all the time from wolfey ive had legends arc for a year and totally forgot about hisu samur
I did have some minor success with decidueye in ranked (not enough to keep using it), though it only ever gets picked 1 in 4 matches so i still quit using it.
I EV train for max HP, split between SP Def and atack, then run weakness policy as item.
moves; Spirit shackle, Shadow Sneak, sucker punch, and whatever i feel like for coverage it will faint before it ever uses.
I only pick it if at least 3 of the oponents pokemon are super effective special attackers. Hence why it never gets picked.
first turn, spirit shackle, pray they tale the weakness policy bait and you dont faint.
then just spam shadow sneak or sucker punch...
Ya, won a few matches for me, not the strongest set. But it let me use a pokemon i liked as my ghost type before i just switched back to dragapult (which i also like)
So in the end, still not worth using. Just a fun experiment. You are all welcome to build on it, maybe we can find a set that works.
What makes Long Reach worse is that Spirit Shackle, Decidueye's signature move, already doesn't make contact.
proposed new meganium signature ability: flower power
during intense sunlight, all healing is doubled (leech seed, leftovers, giga drain, etc) and passive damage is halved (poison, burn, toxic, etc)
...or they just do what Radical Red did? Make it grass/fairy and give it Comfey's ability of priority on all heal moves? (yes, that includes moves like Giga Drain, meaning prio Giga Drain)
Still trash... it needs better bulk and movepool... i hope they give it a mega form and boost the right stats in that form
@@exgardevior Arguably fairy typing is the best type in the game alongside steel. Sure, it'll not be seen in OU and doubles, but it might at least make it viable in the lower tiers.
@@Dragonoid269 people fangirl fairy typing too much, i don't see it being that good defensively unless paired with another S tier typing (like fairy steel and fairy water) and it also synergizes poorl with grass, they don't compensate each other at all. Honestly i think meganium is a lot cause it would need a major rework, and something that actually matters, should probably start by giving it spore, then maybe something else can start mattering.
@@luigimanzelli3786 It's the math on the type chart that actually says Fairy is way too strong. Defensively, the 5 best types are Steel, Ghost, Poison, Fire, and Fairy according to the math. Fire is held back defensively by being the only type that is weak to BOTH of the top 2 offensive types. For the record, Water and Electric are 6th and 7th, and no other types can reasonably be considered good defensive typings. Offensively, Ground and Rock take the top 2 spots indisuptably, being the only two types with more super effective interactions than resisted/immune, and on top of that ALSO having a large number of super effective interactions. There are only 5 types that have equal numbers on each side, those being Fire, Water, Ice, Flying, and Fairy. Those are the top 7 offensive typings. In addition, there are other good coverages types for seeking neutral/super effective damage, either through having a lot of things it hits for super effective damage like Fighting or by having very few things that it doesn't hit for neutral or better like Dragon or Ghost. Other offensive typings have their niches to be sure, but this is just how the chart breaks down.
If you'll notice there, Fairy, Fire, and Water are the only ones appearing in the top 7 on both sides. But, Fairy also has the distinction of not having negative interactions defensively with any of the good offensive types. The only way to take advantage of its weaknesses is to use bad moves. The reason Fairy is the single best type in the game is because it is good on both offense and defense, without the glaring weaknesses to other top contenders that the rest have. To be fair... Steel is a horrible offensive type, but also by far the best defensive type. As in, if you take every possible type combination, there are 171 possible typings, and the top 15 are all Steel dual typings. It is a contender for best type not by being good at everything, but by being so much better than everything else at what it does that you cannot ignore it.
All this to say... if you're asking what the best type is, the only ones even in contention are Steel, Fairy, and Ground. There isn't a legitimate argument for any of the rest.
A bit wordy here, but since I've done all this breaking down, a few more notes won't hurt. Water and Fire both resist 3 of the top 7 offensive typings, and while Fire has a better balance of weaknesses to resistances it is also weak to both of the top 2 offensive types while water is weak to 0 of the top 7 just like Fairy. However, where Water may have a debatable lead defensively due to how important its specific resistances and weaknesses are by comparison, Fire is the better offensive type to balance that out, both hitting exactly 1 of the top 7 defensive types for super effective damage and Fire's being the objectively best defensive type, while Fire also just hits more total types for super effective damage on top of that.
Short summary... Type chart math. That's what makes Fairy the best type in the game.
typhlosion nowhere on the list?
*SCORE!*
a good day for my beloved basic stage cyndaquil
While I will agree that Torterra lax, meaningful competitive impact, calling it the worst starter from its generation is down right egregious.
Every pokemon I chose as a starter in every game making this list.
ME TOO HOW
Yeah, that hurts
it's alright. all these mons have their different purposes. Some of them are decent in singles, some are good when playing through the game, and decidueye is really cool in pokemon unite.
It's unfortunate what happened to magnium. It's a sun based grass type born in a gen without abilities or strong weather. As the gens went on it never got the buffs or expanded movepools that other starters got and so it just kinda stayed bad.
Conceptually meganium would be a good mon for running things like bodyslam, synthesis, solar beam, stun spore, leech seed, (follow me if we're talking doubles), rest, maybe even earthquake or some other coverage move for damage. It would basically sit there and deal chip damage while healing in the sun and spreading status. In theory a pretty cool mon.
Could also use a second typing, grass dragon ,or grass fair would work fine.@@FlamingZelda3
My beef with Sceptile is how they kinda ruined its identity the next generation. Sceptile was supposed to be a fast PHYSICAL attacker, Leaf Blade and all that, learns good cutting/slashing moves. Oh but now we're in Gen 4 so those moves are useless now cause you're still a special attacker ._. idk why they didn't AT LEAST swap Sceptile's Atk and Spl Atk going into Gen 4. Resulted later in Mega Sceptile being a lizard with a rocket tail ???
This so much. GF's design sense for Sceptile is criminally bad.
Sceptile was never a physical attacker. In gen 3 it was still a special attacker, but grass moves were all special in gen 3 so leaf blade was actually good on it. Then when the physical/special split came in gen 4 they made leaf blade physical which made it a worse option on Sceptile but a good option for the other pokemon that got access to it in gen 4, with Sceptile now having energy ball to replace leaf blade. Energy ball and leaf blade even have the same base power so Sceptile didn't lose anything, if anything it preferres energy ball over leaf blade because of energy ball's chance to lower the target's special defense instead of leaf blade's higher critical hit chance.
@@XC11301991 phys and sp. attack split only came after gen 3 lmao
@@Palosaks facts
Knowing Gamefreak, they probably just didn't want to have all 3 Hoenn starters be physical attackers.
Chikorita was fantastic in the mystery dungeon games. Razor leaf could hit far away enemies, synthesis could heal without items, etc. Plus with her cute ponytail "I'm on an adventure" design, chef's kiss. That is where my love for the chikorita line comes from.
No way you give props to the ugly af bird but don't talk about how cool samurott looks.
Meganium’s comeback in Pokemon ZA is gonna be amazing
Mega evolution with fairy typing
@@thezerowulf2046even better? Give it a new regionsl form and give that a mega too that way even if megas dont come back meganium can still exist.
The thumbnail showing the crying Empoleon rlly scared me, just yesterday I was seeing how the ability "competitive" made the little penguin a menace.
weird choice to include him fr lol
Maybe that Empoleon has torrent lol
the fact that Feraligatr and Torterra are Terrible competively hurts me sooo much
Honestly the bit of pronouncing Meganium’s name differently every time you reference it is hilarious
At least the Chikorita line redeems itself in Mystery Dungeon where she can be a good enough partner... I guess?
I mean Mystery dungeon balancing is strange, skitty of all Pokémon is the completely over powered starter.
The jab at MoxieBoosted’s usage of Wo-Chien at 19:57 still got me laughing
care to explain? I don't know the backstory but sounds fun
MoxieBoosted brings Wo-Chien to every regional
13:29 calling Samurott a narwhal made me cringe so fucking hard
I love how he doesn't miss a single opportunity to hate on Incineroar
Wolfey never fails to include inceneroar in some form in every video
Hard to say whether it is more ubiquitous in these videos or on VGC teams.
Well, in a starters video with VGC included Is almost imposible not mention Incineroar Lets be real XD
Six gens later and I'm still here asking for Sceptile's attack and special attack stats to be swapped.
Aren’t we all?
Might as well drop it's defensive stats and pump them into offense and/or speed.
I think I legally have to fight you for having Typhlosion in the Thumbnail. Typhlosion is my ride or die pokemon. Jokes aside, I know bro is not on the list of the worst.
The refusal to throw singles a bone is irritating but understandable given this guy's background, but to still do that while ripping one-on-one footage from FSG which DOES do that is just in bad taste. A lot of these mons are downright good in what for most people is in fact the default format of battle.
Feraligatr : Disrespected
Inteleon : Missing
Inteleon saw (very very minor) usage in SwSh with Razor Claw Gigantamax Shenagans.
Inteleon may not be amazing, but it's definitely stronger than any of these starters
That's because Feraligator's stats are Too Balanced. It doesn't excel at ANYTHING other water types cannot do. Meanwhile Inteleon goes the opposite direction with amazing speed and special attack but frail af and the attack is only middling at best. Greninja is SLIGHTLY faster but also a weaker special attacker, Primarina is SLIGHTLY higher SpAtk but much slower, while the only other Water Type to beat all three is Iron Bundle as of Gen9. So it has a niche last gen: super fast water special attacker.
@@Kereea inteleon has bad stats, compared to the other Galar Starters. And Primarina is reasonably Slower. And Water Types are considered the Bulkier Type, and Inteleon is not one of the Bulkier mons. And it's sadly isn't a fan-favorite like Feraligatr is.
@@hellothere2570 at least the Mid-Mons would handle Inteleon.
I love the idea of meganium becoming the grass/fairy type and getting way bulkier so it's like a tanky support
Yep. As a Meganium Enjoyer, the best way to fix it stats in my opinion is to take 40 Speed and 40-ish Attack off, put its defenses at 130 each and up up SpAtack and HP by the rest. Let it be a Trick Room Screen Setter/Drainer since it has SO many draining moves, especially if you add on Draining Kiss as a Fairy STAB drain. Also just Give It Energy Ball. Its only "good" Grass attack being Solar Beam is bad.
The funny thing is, as a kid, I always thought GSC were the hardest games in the series, not even thinking that there was a possibility that my favorite starter, Chikorita, was piss awful 😂
Ferraligator looks more like a dark type than most dark types.
