I had the same dilemma for a week after I bought the Ruger Max on February 12th. I have carried the 365 since December of 2018 and as far as i was concerned it was the last carry gun I would look for. It seemed perfect…. Until the RugerMax. I was just getting it for deep carry. ( weddings, and places where I did not want others to have any idea I might be carrying. I took them both to the range the first day I got the Max and was pleasantly surprised by how well I shot the Max out of the box. After a week alternating the two, I found myself going with the Max every time. I have not carried the 365 since.
The Sig is a smallish gun but for me was never a pocket carry no matter how much I wanted it to be. (And believe me, I wanted it to be and tried to make it one). The Ruger Max is. It might not seem much smaller but the Max fits in my pocket comfortably, the Sig does not.
I got a muddy river iwb holster for the Max and love it. The big thing for me is the weight. I walk a lot. After a bit I notice the Sig. The Max not so much.
I am comfortable with the .380 as a self defense ammo. You can compare all the tests in the world; 9mm is better, but I am comfortable that the .380 will get the job done if it is unfortunately ever needed, enough so that I will bet my life on it.
Each has 10 plus 1 so that is a watch
I have about the same accuracy with both at 8 yards. I am good with the Ruger at 15 yards, but the Sig is a little better. At 25 I can hit the target with Ruger but honestly not very consistently. I am still good with the Sig at 25 yards.
There are pluses and minuses to each. For me the deciding factor basically comes down to weight (about 40% less for the Ruger) and being comfortable with the .380 for self defense. Plus on a subconscious level I started grabbing the Ruger after a couple of time alternating. The Sig was the best for over 3 years, but was dethroned by the Ruger in my world.

@@anthonyblood2439 I went to the range today and shot about 10 magazines of each. It’s the first time I’ve been to the range in probably 3 months.
I suck at noticing recoil unless there is an extreme amount of difference. To me the difference was negligible. The nine mm has more power but gets absorbed by the heavier gun. My wife said that she noticed more recoil with the Max but it was not bad. She said the recoil with the max is better than the recoil of her Bodyguard.
One thing I did notice is that it took a lot less time for me to shoot well with the Sig than the Max. It took me almost 2 magazines before I found the sweet spot with the sights and looked like I knew how to shoot with the Max. I hit the sweet spot right away with the Sig. I have been shooting the Sig for years though so that probably made a big difference.

I have both. P365 on-paper is marginally larger, but for everyday CCW those differences are huge. The P365 is a a good ccw but at the end of the day i can’t wait to take it off. I can carry my BG380 or LCPs all day, everyday without any issue. I’m talking about joggers, shorts, dress clothes, underwear, etc. i never get tired of carrying my micro 380’s. The real issue IMO comes down to wanting to carry ALL the time vs SOME of the time. Carrying ALL the time is incredibly easier with a micro 380.

I purchased the Glock approximately 4 months ago. I have always been a fan since my law enforcement days. Put carry it IWB was becoming a chore for me. I came across the LCP Max online and began extremely curious. I began to watch hours upon hours of videos about the recoil and how snappy it is and few issues with the slide not locking after the last round.
But to be honest, what sold was the rectangular gel test that was done with a 9mm and .380...same ammo and basically the same manufacture the Max -9 I believe. The cavity damege was minimally , I mean slightly different and that sold me. So now I have a EDC for winter and summer and I'm really satisfied. For years citizens carried 22L for self-defense and they were iffective. I wore my LCP MAX and I honestly have to say it was like wearing a new pair of good walking shoes. Both the Glock 26 and the LCP Max can hold up to 12 + 1 and both are just about equally capable of not only getting someone's attention but also fininshing the job.

I just found this video and it’s about time someone made a video discussion like this. As most have said, I have had the same conundrum but I finally put an end to it. I have both weapons, I like both and shoot both well. I carry the LCP full time. It fits my lifestyle better and I am fully confident in the ammo, it’s not that much different when shot out of these small barrels. I want concealablity, if something come along that I would need a weapon, the Ruger just works.

I'm like you. I've thought about what caliber etc. I've found that the law enforcement officers that I've talked to carry somewhat low capacity firearms off-duty. Examples of what they carry are the ruger lcp, glock 43, and the Smith and Wesson 642, 5 shot 38 special. I like pocket carry. You can have your hand on the firearm and nobody knows it. I'm interested in a 380 max. I think it would be a great carry piece for almost any situation.

I'm where you are. I bought my Glock 27 gen 1 within the first weeks of it's introduction in the 90"s. Opted for the .40 Cal. over the .9mm Glock 26 for the "bigger bullet" argument. Been carrying it since that time but a lot less lately. The older and unfortunately fatter I get the gun's weight and width has gotten to me. Finally I have questioned how big of a cartridge do you really need for self defense? I've always scorned small caliber self defense but I just ordered a Ruger LCP Max .380. I'm really looking forward to the smaller profile and much less weight to start carrying more consistently then lugging around my Glock 27.

I’m sure you have found out by now but after having a G27, fellow G26 owner myself, that having a firearm small enough to fit in your front pocket is going to be night and day in difference.
How’s it going for ya? I know I love having a small pistol so lightweight in my pocket that I practically forget about it being there.

@@rhsking05 The timing of your question is ironic. Front pocket is now where I always carry and now nearly everywhere I go. "So lightweight in my pocket that I practically forget about it being there" is the ironic part. Last week when I was out and about I realized I had my LCP MAX in my pocket in a place it was forbidden by law. I immediately left the building being so grateful how unobtrusive it is and leaving me hopefully much more mindful to not repeat the event. I never had that experience carrying my G27.

As much as I find minor issues with the LCP MAX (inferior cartridge; trigger bite; inability to manually eject unspent rounds from breech; loose/sloppy tolerance between slide and rails), I have to say that carrying with a belly band holster makes this the most invisible and comfortable carry option I've ever found. I literally forget that I am carrying at all. For this reason, I opt for the LCP MAX as my EDC.

  • @bent7406

Regarding the Max 380, it's largest advantage is weight. I've thought about carrying the 365 in "pocket" carry situations but what it comes down to is weight. You can see its outline in the pocket more because of weight and some due to it's size. The size of the max is about as small as you can get and still have a decent purchase on the firearms. To be clear, I do not own, nor have shot, the Ruger Max 380. I could see carrying it during the summer time when clothing is minimal as well. I can see more manufacturer's coming out with their own versions of the Ruger Max. That said, ,the 365 shoots well and is ultra concealable for a 9. To sum up, I'd say the P365 for winter carry and the Ruger Max for the summer time and pocket carry situations (or like a fanny pack or whatever). . . unless you where baggy cloths or are a bigger guy and you don't need to worry as much about concealability.

Keep the Sig in the same spot in the car and the LCP in your pocket. Golden. I have a PP2 M2 that can be pocketed, but it's a hassle I don't want to deal with most of the time. So for better or for worse, I've carried a Beretta Bobcat 21 in 22lr for the last year. It's way better than nothing. The LCP MAX caught my attention when it first came out, but I didn't buy one because 380 ammo was nowhere to be found in my area. I go to the farm and ranch once a week to browse for ammo and buy 9mm or 22lr when they have it. Then in November of 2021 I noticed 380 on the shelf, so I grabbed two boxes and reflected on the LCP MAX. "Maybe I will get one of them thangs." I have almost 600 rounds of 380 today and my LCP MAX is on the way to my FFL. I hope I like it. :)

I landed on this video because I’m in the same position today. I already have a p365 9mm. But Im choosing between the p365 380 and the Ruger 380 Max. I like the 380 because of the lighter weight, concealment and as I age I understand it is easier to chamber the 380. Plus I think some diversification in the arsenal is cool too. The Ruger max is a few ounces lighter that the p365. Truth is how often are you going to need to use it, most people go their whole life without having to use their gun in a life or death situation. Either way you can kill with any gun. Go with what you like or go with some change. One point that’s a factor is that 380 ammo is expensive at times.

If you can pocket carry the sig P365 & not print then go that route. I wouldn't worry about the 380 being a weaker round. I dont want to be shot with either. The P365 is significantly bigger than the LCP Max. It has a longer barrel, which is good, but is a quarter in thicker, which is bad for concealment. I've shot a P365 with 110 grain FMJ range ammunition and a finger extension on the 10-round magazine. I had no difficulty with it; recoil is not at all unpleasant. I suspect a 147 grain JHP would be much less pleasant. The closest I have come to shooting something like the LCP Max was S&W's Bodyguard 380. Its recoil was not unreasonable. However, my hopes that its finger extension had room for my little finger were not fulfilled. If I wanted a .380 for pocket carry, I would also consider Kahr's P380 or CW380 with a MagGuts kit in the 7-round magazine. That gives you 8+1 rounds and enough room for your little finger yet it still fits in your pocket.

Questions like this is why the .30 Super Carry was made. For me, specs are almost irrelevant. The evaluation questions that I use are: 1) Which can I shoot more accurately? 2) Which can I shoot more quickly? Of course, accuracy beats speed, so I only consider speed if I can shoot both of them about as accurately. If for some reason they still are about the same, then I would start to consider things like power, size, comfort, holster, etc.
For someone like my wife, lower power produces better results, so it would be the .380 for her. For me, I find it is a lot more nuanced than that... I shoot both .357 Sig and .45 GAP more accurately than 9mm, so more power is paradoxically better in my case. That being said, I would still choose a 9mm over those other two calibers simply because .45 GAP hollow points are about as common as Roc's teeth and I like my hearing too much to want to shoot .357 Sig defensively without ear pro on. I tend to shoot 9mm better than .380, though this is likely due to familiarity, as I have a lot of 9mm's but only a couple of .380s, so in this situation, I would still choose the 9mm over the .380 (though I'm a Glock guy and would prefer my G26 over the Sig... I don't really like the way the P365 feels)

@@ev3dale298 Very true, but I think this means that we cannot consider the cartridge in isolation, but rather in conjunction with the pistol as well. If one cannot shoot either the .380 in a mouse gun nor a 9mm in a micro-compact very well, then neither gun should be carried. There are some larger .380s available, so rather than a mouse gun, it would be better to step up in size to make sure one can shoot it well... shot placement is really all that matters; the size of the gun should be a secondary consideration, not the primary. This is not to say that size/weight is not a consideration, but this should only be used to select a pistol all else being equal

Once I get home I cannot toss it back into the safe quick enough and grab my glock 43. Then if I'm going into the city I take my Glock 19. That's just me. Lol

Have you compared the two pistols in terms of accuracy? I had the 365 in 9mm and traded it for the 365 xl and it’s my favorite all around pistol. However, recently I went back and bought the 365 in 380 caliber and I love it because of it’s recoil. It shoots very accurate and very low recoil. So I prefer the 365 in 380 and in 9mm, I prefer the XL.

I live in wa state where we have these unconstitutional magazine size limit laws, which has had the effect of removing most full sized handgun options from the shelves. I'm young at age 23 and have only been old enough to buy handguns for 2 years now and was in a college town the last couple of years where I both did not need a handgun nor could I justify the expense. My point being, these micro sized pistols are really the only handguns available to people my age and younger unless you want to go with a full size 45 single stack or similar. Full sized 9mm and similar handguns are not something I have access to and it is ridiculous. That said, a p365 in a retention holster is my belt gun and I picked up a ruger lcp max for dress attire pocket carry for the office. They are both excellent pieces.

Usually where states restrict magazine capacity, you are limited to 10 rounds, check your local laws to be sure though. With that said, 10 rounds in the mag and 1 in the chamber PLUS that extra 10 round reload you got to have in your pocket equals 21 rounds..train/practice with reloading your handgun under stress, get proficient with that and you’re fine.. thats more than enough ammo to have on you, you’ll just have to do a mag swap is all..either of those handguns will serve you well..the main thing i want to teach younger folk is the importance of actually having that gun on you when you need it.. wont do you any good at home or even in the truck when you need it to defend your life. Have it ON YOU..heres another thing to consider.. most handgun fights happen in less than 3 seconds, within only 5-7 yards and only 3 rounds fired….and you guys up there need to vote out the dummies making those ridicules laws that infringe on your constitutional and GOD given rights ..take care ..

I completely agree with you on the points that you make. 10+1 rounds out of these micro sized pistols using any premium defensive ammo plus a spare mag in the case of mechanical or operator failure is more than enough for any conceivable ordinary self defense scenario. My father is a desert storm/shield veteran and instilled in me since I could walk a respect for firearms as tools and the proper and safe means of weapon handling and the responsibilities associated. Having the weapon securely on my person at all times is what I have been practicing and I have found that proper holsters and belt help with comfort and safety to a high degree. I own both the p365 and the LCP max. I can definitely say that I enjoy and prefer to carry my sig p365 because of the ballistics of the 9mm cartridge. But what I can definitely tell you is that I find myself pocket carrying the LCP max more than I carry the P365. All due to the ease of carrying. The sig is very easily concealed on my body, especially being a bigger fella at the appendix position. But I noticed before getting the LCP max, I would just run to the store, or a family / friend and say to myself “ I don’t feel like putting on a holster and gun, I’m just going up the road, or I’ll be right back”. And end up leaving home without any firearm. Now having the LCP max, I never leave the house without it, and now I don’t leave the house without a firearm. It’s Just so easily concealable. I also like the idea of a little gun on your person, is better than any gun left at home. This past winter, I’ve found myself carrying both many of times. P365 at appendix and LCP max in my pocket like a back up gun. Also Sitting in the truck, the p365 comes out of my appendix area so its easily accessible in the truck, while the lcp will stay In my pocket in case I get out of the truck and don’t feel like re holstering the p365. So I find my LCP max a little more versatile, with a nice round count of ammo too. I don’t worry about the .380 ballistics too much because in a self defense situation, its all about accurate shot placement and is why I believe in consistent training. A .380 in the right location is just as deadly, from self defense distances, as any round in my opinion. I predict this summer with the Louisiana heat, I will be pocket carrying my LCP max alone, more than my p365 alone. Also, Like the other comment posted, the idea of being able to place your hand on your firearm if feeling threatened, without brandishing or showing you are reaching for a gun, is a plus. Especially, if a threat has the drop on you (already has gun pointed at you), and is asking for your wallet, you can easily say, “ok man, no problem, I’m just going to reach for my wallet, and be able to defend yourself a little easier, than reaching for appendix or the belt line trying to accomplish the same thing. I really liked the video, because it made me want to open up on my situation with both firearms.

Thanks for the comment my friend. I agree. Any way I can talk you out of appendix carry? I know it feels better and might be a tad faster to draw from BUT…. With one accidental or negligent discharge. You will likely perish. That femoral artery in your groin area is a direct line to your heart( that’s why docs use it for angioplasty) and if punctured, you live about 30-45 SECONDS.. please, please consider a different carry position..the guys on here that are glorifying that carry position are promoting holsters for any certain company in the long run and couldn’t care less about your safety..on the hip at 4-4.30 position worst can happen is you take one in the leg or ass. Either way, you live..

@@southernarsenal908 I agree, but I just can’t get comfortable in any other position. I generally never take my firearm out of the holster. It goes in and out the pants while holstered. I’ve had to train myself because I’ve had the same thing in the back of my mind as well. Definitely not something overlooked. But Because the P365 is a small firearm, and the holster is as well, while training at the range from the appendix position, my re holstering consists of popping out the kydex holster from my belt with left hand, inserting the firearm in the holster outside of the belt line, then reattaching the pre holstered firearm into my belt line for added safety. It takes a little longer to take your next shots, but it makes me feel safer. I don’t like reholstering in the appendix position unless the firearm goes in the holster prior to putting back in my pants. But you are correct all the videos you see, are of flat stomached people reholstering in the appendix position, and barely looking out for possible garment snags etc that could cause an accidental negligent discharge.

Someone with a 1911 cocked and locked will have to flick off the safety when drawing. I consider flicking off the safety on my P365 to be part of the draw. Even the old west type quick draw entailed cocking the gun during the draw. It's something you learn to be quick at and to me is much safer than a five pound trigger with no safety.

Shot placement is key in self defense. The power of handgun ammo isn’t going to mean much. You could comfortably EDC .22 if keep you’re training consistent to stay accurate and sharp in your responsiveness. Talk to EMT’s and law enforcement who’ve seen people shot, some can keep gong after getting shot multiple times by a 9mm and some are close to death with one shot from a .22. Shot placement is key. Also people are built different some people just have more inner fortitude that others and they can keep attacking even with fatal wounds.

You may want to try pocket-carrying each one of them for a week and compare how you feel.
As many say: the smaller weaker-caliber gun that you would actually carry because it is easy for you to move around with, would be 100% better than the bigger stronger-caliber gun that you would end up not carrying because its weight and size kept annoying you and burdening your everyday life till you got fed up and left that bigger gun in the safe.
Also - if heaven forbid you had to shoot in a crowded area, the lesser-penetration cartridge would pose less danger that you would harm innocents because the bullet you had shot hit them after going through your assailant.
And if you must, you might carry a +P 380.
Like any bullet, the380 would end the fight if it entered a skull and shocked the brain within.
And it could probably do so from even more than 50 yards.
See below the vid of a professional shooter who hit a steel target from 200 yards with a 380 SW bodyguard. You could hear that "CLANG" from 200 yards away... I would not have wanted to receive that bullet!

I just like the bigger caliber and have always carried on the belt.there actually isn’t but 8 or so oz difference in the 2 guns. And both can be pocket carried if you so desire..for what you gain in the power of the cartridge , the 9mm is a winner for me.. over penetration is hyped up more than it should be.. I would never try for a head shot!! Always air center mass!!! Remember that. But it’s a great thing that we can disagree and still be on the same page..personally, I don’t pocket carry because you’re already handicapped having to reach in your pocket and draw to defense yourself.. for me, hip carry is best.. and faster and easier to get the weapon into action.. Why? Too big and too heavy. So, buy what you actually need and will actually carry everyday. For me, it's the smallest and lightest pistol that is totally RELIABLE and sufficient for my personal risk. I'm not going to carry a .380 in the apocalypse, but as of yet, we are not in such. So, it will suffice. Just bought a Sig 365 in .380 for the wife and she loves it. Bingo. I looked at the Ruger's, but slide rattle, finger pinch and past bad history with Ruger products pointed me to the Sig. Again, what will you comfortably and religiously carry everyday without complaint? For me, .380.

I agree with shot placement BUT… 380 compared to 9mm is very different penetration wise. The 380 with hp ammo is only around 6-8 inches if you allow for light clothing and a straight on frontal shot.as far the 9mm , it’s common to get 12-15 inches penetration from any standard pressure hp round. But with that being said, both have over penetration issues with ball, with the 9 being ridiculas. So shot placement is key but you also have to have enough penetration to reach vital organs or be able to disrupt bone structure..
