My boyfriend who is how my husband didn’t give me a key to his apartment until AFTER 2 years of dating. Yes, he’s avoidant. We didn’t get married until 8 years of dating. I’m anxious. It took ALOT of years of patience, understanding, and honesty to get him to understand me. He still has avoidant tendencies but at least I speak up and express what he does. I adore him.

I realized I was dating an avoidant after watching your videos. My girlfriend rarely communicated about the relationship. She said she was too busy to talk but I saw her talking to friends on social media. She said she rarely knew her ex. She also seemed scared of conflicts. She posted emotional quotes on her wall rather than talk about her emotions. I broke up with her because she wasn't willing to work with me on these issues.

@@TheBlanco951 it was hell dating an avoidant. I have an anxious attachment style so her absence made me very paranoid. I was confused and hurt she was avoiding me. I listened to people other than Craig and made a big mistake. One guy suggested I wait until she talks to me. I just came across your videos and now know I’m dating an avoidant. I am classic anxious. I read the book Attached and it opened my eyes. Problem is that I’m five months into this thing. So 90% of me knows I have to leave and I am. The 10% is sad and really wants to try because some days he doesn’t seem as bad. These people are destructive. Why do they continue to date when they know they aren’t ready for anything real. I tried to do the responsible thing by taking time to heal from my long term relationship of ten years before dating. I feel like he just set me back and now I’m back scared to even give anyone else a try because I’m scared I’ll get trapped again by one of these types.

I noticed that as I progress in my recovery I get turned off by avoidant tendencies (and I was really attracted to them before). Now I get mad when I see how people purposefully ignore me. like if you hate me so much, just stay away from me! Why do you need to pull off this illusion of a relationship? Find someone who is less emotional and expressive if you so much dislike it. I just learned to walk away. And surprise-surprise, these people are like "hold on, where are you going to, I thought you'd be around forever!" They look strong and confident as long as you are around, showering them with love and admiration, and when you walk away they become lost and confused. But really, how can you be so insensitive and expect me to tolerate this endlessly? Very selfish people.

    • @MissSarahGM
      @MissSarahGM 6 років тому +22

Elena, I wish I would feel like you and get turned off! I have had a lot of those "relationships" and many turned out to be narcissists disordered men. Because in the beginning they were obviously not avoidant in order to seduce me and hook me. Currently I am long distance with a man who is pulling away, after having been very close in person and he had been very affectionate and loving. I guess there is some manipulation, conscious or not, because in the beginning he knew how to seduce me and make me feel loved, but I think it is when I started to show I was hooked and in love, and waiting for a relationship, he started the pulling away and coldness, withdrawal of affection... It doesn't really feel like a relationship because the emotional connection has almost disappeared. I feel like he's testing my attachment, am I going to stick around for emotional crumbs? I agree with you on the selfishness, they are very immature people, self-absorbed, even if they fear intimacy and closeness.

Elena May, same for me! Narcissists are horrible people even if they are disordered there is no excuse for the abuse. Currently I believe the guy I am involved with has strong borderline features, very fearful of intimacy, pulling away now that I have asked for more connection.. I guess I am going through a devaluation phase after having been idealized and loved... which is terribly confusing and saddening.

I thought I was secure attachment until this marriage...but I turned into a very needy and anxious person. For 8 years he wouldn’t have sex more than one or two times a year...it was so horrible...I gave and gave to the point that I was trauma bonded with this push pull dynamic. It sounds like she was turned off to a degree by his age this may have affected her attraction. She was embarrassed by his age not to want his voice to be heard over the phone or to show him to her family. It almost seems she was using the relationship as more of a father figure or someone supporting her in some way than in a romantic connection sense. She may have given kissing, sex etc to someone her own age she was dating. I’m feeling she had an aversion to his age sadly.

Ok, all I hear from this video and the comments is about avoidants and how WE as an anxious people need to deal with them. It appears that we need to change for them. Sorry, avoidants have an attachment style trauma from childhood too. To me they need to change to be more secure or seek help with their trauma. We anxious can't be the ones doing all work here and accepting them as they are. I understand that avoidants don't think they have a problem and we can't just give them a pass because "you just have to accept them as they are". Life and relationships are a two way street. They need to understand that that's how they are and be willing to change just like anxious are willing to change. Total BS that we need to follow suit of how they are.

She showered me with gifts, gave me keys to her apartment after date #3, but the second I started expressing my love for her and desire to be with her more, she ran for the hills. I am sure therapy is necessary for such people and that it can do wonders and make them heal, so that they can achieve happiness in relationships. But how do you get them to hear you, when they always avoid talking about emotions?? btw, through your videos Craig, I realized I was with an avoidant. We still feel it after your gone , we feel it hardest when you move on we are not heartless it still hurts it just takes us longer
AND WE WILL NEVER LET YOU SEE THAT SIDE we are 2-3 months behind you and reach out way too late, we see you happy and step aside When we are feeling suffocated in a relationship we run because the we cant breathe., imagine your head is been held under water we are gasping for air, fighting to get another breathe of air to survive.,if you knew how to get us to breathe wow things would be different .when we breakup with you we are just trying to breathe .all you see is us happy and assume we cold heartless people imagine breathing normal again take a deep breath its not about you its air to survive revive

However she became closer in some ways but more distant in others. when we would go out to a club she would want to be away from me socializing with everyone else. anyway the interesting thing for me is i seem to not really be interested in the girls that show a high level of interest in me but show this high level of interest in this girl who shows little in me. When i get that interest its like a switch goes off in me and i no longer desire the person wanting me. can you give me your thoughts on my attachment style and what to do from there?

There are so many more problems with this particular case. First of all, a 20 year-old is still a child. Period. Second of all, unless she comes from a very strict religious background, her demands and restrictions don't make any sense. If she's religious, she'll have to date someone who is on the same page and is ok with no contact at all before marriage. Too many red flags, this case goes way beyond the classical "avoidant attachment style".

dont think its too farfetched that he hadn't dated in that long. im close to 30 and have only been interested in a few different girls and only really dated one of them, one of the other ones wanted a casual fling and i wanted a relationship so it didnt work out.
Its doubtful now that i'll be dating again any time soon since i work 50-60 hours a week , cant go out after work and all my friends are either busy or dont want to do anything on the weekends so i have zero opportunity to meet new people.
only started dating my now ex because we happened to work together and i found her work ethic and general attitude very attractive so we chatted for a while then i asked her out to a casual date and things progressed from there.
of course me having an anxious attachment style meant I smothered her emotionally and its possible she has an avoidant attachment style so of course that drove away her attraction.
she did have some unusual hangups regarding sex and her sexuality though.
naturally now ive been watching a lot of these videos to try to improve myself, or at least know myself a bit better and hoping that when she moves back (she had to move half the country away for a year for a new job) after some good old no contact she might reach out and i'll have improved myself enough to be ready for that since i doubt i'll have the chance to meet anyone new in that time.

Could it be that someone is ‘avoidant’ to some people, but ‘anxious’ to his/her ideal person (I.e.: a person who is way out of his/her league, or his dream person, or celebrities he/she adores)

You’re likely Disorganized attachment / Fearful Avoidant. They swap between the two depending on what their partner is. I am FA myself. Thought I was Avoidant then I got with a Dismissive Avoidant and felt anxious.

Hi coach, I broke up with my ex almost 3 months ago because i found out he very likely had been cheating and talking to multiple girls. He wasnt giving me the same interest and respect as before. He didnt even give it a second thought and didnt fight to keep me. We were together for a year and 3 months. I have been in no contact for about 2 months. His brother had found out about me calling their home phone from an unknown number. I found out from a mutual friend he was courting a girl towards the end of our relationship and is now also sleeping around with 2 or 3 girls and flirting with multiple women online. I tried calling him 3 times from a phone number he recognized was me and he was eager to pick up each time but i didnt say anything. Your thoughts?

I guess the long distance also added another challenge/layer of difficulty...we were very public about our relationship so what he did is humiliating...will keep watching self-help breakup videos until I am better..

Just keep NC and start to understand yourself and him. You will eventually see his flaws clearer and yours. Work on yours! You can do this! Be a better version for yourself and someone better will benefit from it. Good luck!

I've been watching your vids for over 3 months now Coach, so I know that I understand attachment theory at this point, but that said, it's still very hard to know what you're dealing with when you're dating someone, at least in the early goings. For example, I've been dating a new girl for almost 2 months now, but I'm still very unsure what she is. Perhaps a hybrid of anxious and avoidant. On one hand, she's very chatty, personable, and loves to go out, hold hands and if she's a little boozed up (lol) make out in public. On the other hand, she seems very untrusting of people, and seems insecure in the bedroom. She hates giving oral sex and is basically a mute during sex (minus the orgasm when the whole block can hear her lol).. Yes, this is all "TMI", but I've expressed my desire for both of those things, and she's just not into it, so its made a few of our sexual encounters awkward to say the least. My ex was the best lover I've ever had, so this is a step down in my opinion, and it's almost been a struggle for me intimacy wise. I like communication, interaction and openness in the bedroom, and this new girl doesn't. She displays anxious behavior in her every day life, but she's also distrusting of people overall, and avoidant in the bedroom. No clue on how to handle her lol.
