    Welcome to another episode of DiyCarModz. I’m Jeff and in this video I'm going to show you how I hardwired my dashcam on my vehicle. The dashcam I'm using is the A118C. The positive wire is connected to a fuse that is only on when the car is on and the negative wire is grounded to a bolt on a metal piece under the steering wheel.

    When connecting the fuse tap, you need to make sure that the red (positive) wire that goes to your dashcam is on the draw side (i.e. the side opposite to the load side). To know this, take the fuse out, turn the key to acc, use a multimeter to see which side is the load side and which one is the draw side. The one with voltage is the load side, and the one with no voltage is the draw side.

    when the curtain airbag opens and the cable deflects its opening direction, the customer will be sad!
    always mounted behind the airbag, attached to the post or original cables.
    it may be slower to install, but safety comes first.

    I ended up hard-wiring a car socket I bought off eBay. Made it a ton easier. Didn't have to whip out my soldering iron, shrink tubing, or heat gun. I used one of the screws behind the panel as a ground. Would not have been as easy without this tutorial though! :)
    Debating on using the same socket to run my radar detector simultaneously, but I'm not sure if it will draw too much current.

    Great video. 1. Is it necessary to solder the wires together and if it is, do you have any tips for those of us who are not used to soldering? 2. Do I have to worry about the weather stripping/panelling not fitting together correctly after I pull it apart or are all vehicles made to come apart and go back together that easily?

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  7 років тому +1

      Its not necessary to solder the wires. Just use the provided blue crimp connector. There is no issue with the weather stripping or the panel fitment. and it goes back together very easy.

    Can the hardwire drain your car battery or plug it direct to the cigarette spot will drain the car battery. Which one is the best? Thank you great video

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  6 років тому

      It depends on the fuse slot you have the dashcam hooked up to. If you connect it to constant 12v then yes, the camera will be powered even with the engine off. If you connect it to ignition switch fuse then.. no, the camera will turn off with the vehicle.
      Some vehicles does have constant 12v at the charge port. If you can charge your phone with the car off then yes, it will power the dashcam and it will continue to drain the battery.

      The tape they provide is VHB tape. Not your over the counter double sided tape you find at target/walmart/hardware store. In order to remove it you have to pry it off, it will not come off just yanking on it. You actually need to use either a dental floss or fishing line to saw it off.

    Can't you access the fuses without removing the trim piece? Also, what do you think about wiring it to the auto-dimming mirror?

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  8 років тому +1

      +Alex Huynh You do not have to remove the lower dash time to access the fuse panel. If you have the auto dimming mirror you tap the positive wire that goes to that mirror assembly. Just have to find space in the roofliner for the hardwiring kit box. Use a DIMM to test which wire is the positive wire. And, no I do not know since I don't have the auto-dimming mirror

  • @FrankMac59
    @FrankMac59 5 років тому

    If you put the add-a-fuse in the wrong way, you run the risk of having placed the fuses in series -that is the current flows through both fuses on the add-a-fuse, whereas they are designed to be in parallel where the current splits between the two end devices. If is series,. this could mean that the lowest capacity fuse may blow unnecessarily. You must find which point of the fuse socket carries the current in and be sure to have the pin furthest away from the add-a-fuse cable plug into that current-in point.

    What do you when you want to put up a windshield sun shade? Do you leave your dash cam on your windshield during summer months? Where we live, it gets over 100 degrees continuously for weeks at a time. Any suggestions where to mount the dash cam? Thanks

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  8 років тому

      I leave the dash cam on my windshield. The car I have has a lane watch camera feature and the sunshade has a cutout for it. My dashcam does not get in the way of the sunshade since I've mounted it near this cutout as shown in this video. One thing to note: This particular dash cam I'm using does not perform to well in extreme high heat. It will work but the image "might" become slightly out of focus because the camera mounting piece is made out of plastic.

      Thanks for the feedback. One other question, is there a reason why you connected your add-a-fuse to 7.5A or 10A? In my vehicle I have a fuse that's not being used (30A Power Seat FR). Do you think it would it be wise to take that fuse out and replace it with 10A add the add-a-fuse to that slot using? Thanks for your advice.

    Jeff. I ordered same dash cam and I thought I can make hard wire easy with OBD wire kit. Product name is Fuguan OBD car charger kit and waiting for delivery. But I think I made a mistake. Someone said the power of OBD is always on. Is it true? I don't want to kill my battery because of dash cam...

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  8 років тому

      +Jun Rhee Yes that is true OBD2 port will provide power with the vehicle off. However, if your charger you purchase have a built in low voltage protection mode then you will be fine. The device will cut off when it reaches a certain voltage (usually 11.5v)

    • @junrhee4478

      +DIY: Car Modz I got camera and OBD wire. I tested wire first. It doesn't have any manual and power is always on. I checked amazon and this is not the one you mention about with auto shut off function.. I ordered again hard wire and add a circuit kit. I will follow what you did.
      I got couple of question Jeff. I found the frequency on the menu. Do you know the difference between 50 hz and 60 hz? And in the middle of drive I turn on the audio and played loud on purpose. Surprisingly that time of video is missing. I can not figure out it was not turned on or that loud noise cause the recording problem. I will do it again tomorrow for check up but what is your opinion of this incident? And when I saw your video it was very clear and sharp. I will set up 10 mega pixel, quality as fine, strong as sharpness. How did you set up for that clear video? Please let me know. Thank you.

    questions
    1) if i have DC TO DC hardwire kit with 5v 1.5a output do i still need to use add a fuse with 2a fuse or can i just wrap the red wire directly to my 10a fuse and ground the wire
    2) does the fuse have positive and negative side

    • @kjenk19
      @kjenk19 7 років тому +1

      Miles15. com I don't believe the fuse has a positive and negative side. I think they work buy just being part of the circuit, so, essentially just a thin piece of the positive wire that will break if it is over loaded.
      I butchered what I was trying to describe in my head but maybe someone else can explain it better.

    Instead of a hard wire kit, can one just cut the power adapter and use those wires? I did so and it revealed a green wire and black wire. I grounded the green and connected the black to the add-on fuse holder. Chose my horn's 15 amp fuse to tap into with a 5 amp accessory fuse. Turned on the dash cam and it started smoking. Any thoughts???

    Whats the difference between using a power adapter or hard wiring. If the cam will turn on when the car is on?
    Also, if I leave the cam on when car is off. Either connect through adapter or hard wire. Whats the difference?

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  6 років тому

      power adapter and hard wiring is the same thing. It powers the dash cam. People hardwire it so that the wires are hidden and out of the way and the charge port is not occupied by the dash cam. It's upto you how you want it wired. If you want to to turn on only when the car is on then connect the device to a power source that is only hot when the car is on. If you want it on all the time, then connect it to a source that is hot at all times. But if you do connect it to always hot. Just be careful not run out of battery.

    Then what about the parking mode in some dash cams? so then if there is a hit while the car is off, then this feature wont be functioning!

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  6 років тому

      You simply use a fuse slot that has constant power and purchase a dashcam that will record before and after the impact when the impact does happen. No use on getting a camera that will record only after the impact. Also, buy putting it on parking mode then you do risk of draining your battery so you have to install voltage regulator where it will cut off the power to the dashcam if the battery is low on voltage.

  • @Alycanj

    wouldnt tapping into the drl fuse be useless when the headlights are on?

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  8 років тому

      +walkthepark drl turn on when the car is on. Not when the headlights are on. However, it really doesn't matter. As you saw in this video any of the bottom row of fuses would have worked just fine since they only have positive voltage with the car on.

  • @BlackFoxx17
    @BlackFoxx17 6 років тому

    Why did you connect it to the DRL fuse? it's usually done on the car lighter fuse.

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  6 років тому

      It can be hooked up to any fuse you want. Doesn't have to be a specific fuse. The fuse I picked is only hot when the vehicle is on. If you want it to be on 24/7 then pick a fuse that is hot at all time.

    • @BlackFoxx17
      @BlackFoxx17 6 років тому

      I wouldn't want it to be on 24/7. I was just saying most of the videos Iv'e seen they connect it the car lighter fuse, but you are absolutly right you can hook it up to any fuse. It's intresting because on my car (2016 Honda accord V6 touring) the slot you used the DRL fuse, mine is empty. Any advice?

      If you run it along the windshield side of the pillar and keep it clear of the fabric bag, it will still be safe.

    • @gaboaaa23
      @gaboaaa23 6 років тому

      that was my biggest concern! Ive installed it in the same way on the a-pillar. Now im affraid the airbag wont open fully. How can i be sure?

    • @KWatson1984
      @KWatson1984 6 років тому

      gabrielwhite just run the wire again but run it right along the edge of the windshield rather than along the edge of the door. As long as you keep the wire in front of the airbag you should be fine.

    • @KWatson1984
      @KWatson1984 6 років тому

      Some of the metal inside the dashboard can be sharp as it's not normally touched by the driver so be careful pulling the wire through.

    correct me if im wrong, but if i need to use the parking/motion detector mode, when my car is off and im away from it, will this suit me me? or do i need to connect it to the battery anyhow?

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  6 років тому

      You just need to change one thing. Instead of connecting to a fuse that ONLY has voltage when the car is on, you need to connect it to a fuse that has constant voltage regardless if the car is on or off. Also, make sure you are using the hardwire kit that has voltage regulator that will shut off the camera when the car batter is running low so that you are not stranded.

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  8 років тому

      Hook up the power source to a constant battery voltage fuse or hook it up to a power bank. Precaution... by connecting the power source to the fuse , the camera will be draining the car battery. You should consider purchasing the dashcam hardwiring kit with the battery voltage protection function ( the dashcam will shut off when the voltage drops below 11.5v). If not, your vehicle might not start due to low battery.

    Why did you use a 10 amp fuse for the A118C?

    • @DIYCarModz
      @DIYCarModz  8 років тому

      It was just what was provided with the add a fuse kit. I've change it a 3A fuse.

    • @user-jt3vr8ln1c
      @user-jt3vr8ln1c 8 років тому

      OK 3A sounds better. I am using a 2 amp fuse on my A118C's add-a-circuit.
      Now that I have your attention, maybe you can answer a question for me:) Does the direction of the add-a-circuit matter when you plug it into your fuse box? I've read conflicting info, thanks.

    • @johnjkizer6399

      Doesn’t matter because it only powered when the accessories is on., in either directions would give you the same result, I would suggest towards where the wire is going to be running so you won’t get a crimp, peace and God Bless

    You ran the wire wrong at the A Pillar its in the way off the SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG! the wire will catch on it when it deploys! the wire should go behind it.

      +sm2by Here is the instructions from Honda America to install the auto dimming mirror which states to run the wire harness in "front" of the vehicle wire harness. The dashcam wires are tucked between the weatherstrip and the gap.. its no where near the side curtain airbag deployment.

    No need to buy an adapter! Just use the cigarette lighter adapter/converter that came with the dashcam! Most definitely all of the Chinese brands and others split apart in the middle! Solder your wires onto the contacts inside.. run your wires out the tip of the lighter adapter... put halves back to gether... bingo!
