    I had my dash cam installed rather ugly with the cable dropping into the trim and across the dash. After watching this video, I fully popped out the trim and saw I had the camera all over the curtain airbag. Following the instructions and precautions in the video, I moved the cable and secured it properly and down into the glove box and out into the usb port under my radio.
    Thank you ChrisFix. This looks so much better and so much more professional thanks to your video.

Then you need to add the code he provided QEBGTPOH and that's a $20 coupon. One tip also about camera location for rain/wet conditions... Would be good if you could run washer fluid on windscreen, then tap the wipers and you're most likely always have that one spot on top/mid where wipers cannot wipe, so if you placed your camera there you might have almost useless camera during the rain... I did that mistake on my last vehicle so I had to relocate the camera, you always learn something new every day.. 👌

    • @JoshuaPlays99

A request for a future time: do a video on how to do instructional videos "with common household electronics and software" (as well as whatever Chris is actually using). So many people do how-to videos and clearly have subject-matter expertise but don't know how to translate that to video format. A solid "train the trainer" video would be invaluable at helping everyone share the knowledge they have which would be a win for everyone else!

      Yep, most of the time your cell phone camera is a better option than what's on the market. It's getting better, I'm on my third gen of dual cameras, but objectively there's big differences that you frequently don't discover until a license plate is blurred in a freeze frame. Two 4k60 cameras can have big differences in the underlying hardware quality.

Sure enough, I had wired BOTH my cars as you illustrated as the WRONG way - where the camera wire would have impeded the deployment. After watching your video it only took me 30 minutes to properly pull off the A-Pillar inside moulding and correctly run and tether the camera wire to the factory harness in the A-Pillar - my curtain airbags are no longer impeded!

    You should address a few things:
    1. What to do in the case the cig lighter is powered all the time, such as having to unplug it at each stop. I see why you installed them the way you did the truck registered its cig sock as powered full time.
    2. With the fuse taps you need to pull the fuse out and see which side is powered. You did mention it in the missing fuse location but if you just plug in the tap and not check the wire to the camera will be unfused. I doubt a lot of DIY people would have picked up on that.
    3. There are more cars with bolts, or even one time use clips holding in the A-Pillar. Some Hondas for instance have you strike the a pillar with a hammer to break the clip before removal.
    4. A lot of newer cars have lane keep cameras, or something along those lines by the mirror and people need to avoid them when running wiring, for instance if you want the camera on the passenger side and the fuse box is on the drivers side. Subarus even have a warning to not even touch their cover just incase you shift something.
    Thank you for addressing the over airbag wire tuck, it enrages me seeing it as it can be so dangerous. Id even like to test it or see it tested once with a slow mo cam. Maybe with dash cams being more and more popular one of the youtubers will do it.
    Other than that nice clean video probably the most thorough one I've seen, I'm not a fan of just tucking wires in like on your truck I would have still removed the A-pillar but thats nit picking.

    • @antons7202
      @antons7202 13 днів тому

      I am just wondering when car makers will provide these basic 5 volts in the middle of the windscreen, so that no one needs to risk dragging the wire around to the fuse box. Nowadays, you get USB sockets instead of cigarette lighters, but installing a basic dash cam still turns out to be quite a process instead of just plug and play. Anyway, let us ask ChrisFix to make another video on dash cams installation with the newest and most advanced cars on the market.

    • @Shiznit304
      @Shiznit304 5 днів тому

      There isn't a senario where the camera would be unfused. It would just go through the bottom fuse if installed backwards. If no bottom fuse is installed, power won't make it to the dashcam if the tap is installed backwards.

    Chris. An old hot rodder life hack that was passed down to me as a teen, by my uncle, a master restormodder. Add the following tool to the list.
    A set of small, fine flat and round files. They not only are good for cleaning ignition points and terminals. They also make quick work if cleaning up even the most FUBAR looking of ground holes. A small taper works best, and also deburs, if 💨 ng wire, to allow the grommet to better protect the wire or hose.
    It's a top drawer on the box, glove box, and saddle bag must in our modest fleet of classics and bikes.
    Also handy for upkeep on the knee and ankle joints of my prosthetics. Hooks dirt and lint from the collar mounts, beautifully.
    Welcome back, Kid. Missed Ya.

    You know, Chris, I've had two dash cams (front and rear) installed, but I took it to a stereo shop to do it. After watching your video, I have confidence that I could probably do it myself next time.
    I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue. After watching you tug on the various panels to open them or remove them, I got my fingers under the rear door sill panel on one of the sides of my Rogue, and gave it "a good pull". It worked like a charm. Fascinating.
    Panel connectors seem much more robust than I remember from the '70s and '80s, where many of them would break if you gave them "a good pull". Of course, that was after you removed any screws holding them. I really like these new panel connectors.
    Heh. "All these plastic pieces just snap in. So just give them a good hit". You know, I'll bet that some of the assembly folks in the factories REALLy enjoy their jobs. That's a job for me. 😃

    What makes your videos so good is your meticulous attention to detail. I recently watched your "how to replace a broken window" video and one example is how you took into consideration WIPING THE OIL off the new razor blade before using it because it may affect the urethane adhesive. Once again you do it here with the high endurance memory card, the flush cuts, the voltage shutoff and more. All your little tips and tricks are very appreciated. Also just how universally applicable the videos are. I don't know if you read comments or take suggestions but one video idea I think you could do that would be useful in todays day and age with crime up is how to install an aftermarket alarm. I figured it out but it took a while and there's not too many great videos on it.

    @Fenix1861 20 днів тому

    Great video. You hit almost every issue most people will have. There are four things I think people still should consider before deciding:
    1) most of the camera systems average 2.5-5A of draw per camera. This means a 3 cam set will draw ~7-10A while active. The circuit needs at least that much headroom on the fuse, otherwise you might pop fuses while driving down the road. And no, no one should ever just put in a higher rated fuse. Fuses are assigned to the circuits they protect for a reason.
    2) Unfortunately, everything that I have read indicates that dashcams that are setup in Hybrids/PHEVs/EVs as aftermarket devices and utilize parking mode (remain powered while the vehicle is not running seem to tear up their 12V batteries. The recommendation I have seen most often is to make sure you get a camera system that has its own battery backup (most of the systems with supercapacitors just don’t have the endurance to power them overnight). That could mean an extra $200+ someone wasn’t counting on.
    3) I have also noticed that those same vehicles have made any and all fuse boxes and the 12V battery increasingly difficult to access over time.
    I have a 2019 Fusion Hybrid (not the PHEV) and the 12V Lead-Acid battery is in the trunk (no, I am not kidding) and the interior fuse box is driver side mounted INSIDE of the steel frame of the IP and recessed just behind a part of that steel making it nearly impossible to get a multimeter probe to contact. Any installer would need to wear Kevlar gloves for protection against severe cuts and have the smallest hands with the most flexible wrists ever just to test. I really wish the manufacturers included the engine-off state of each circuit as part of the fuse box diagram in the Owner’s Manual.
    4) If your vehicle has a HV Battery (Hybrids, PHEVs, EVs) DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT touch ANY wire with orange insulation that is larger than the wire part of your USB charging cord. If you see one, find a different way to go.

  • @andrewc7451
