That is a great idea. Most cars, if you don't have a LOADED accessory package will have blank knock outs that could be used for the on-off kill switch. Just get a switch that doesn't do anything, but go from ON to OFF from a dealer so it matches the others. Ya just have to be more devious then the thief, but, more creative.

Cars are good to have sometimes , but they can also be more trouble than they're worth , when things go bad . And without doubt , they are almost certainly guaranteed to do that eventually . Sometimes it's not even the car's fault . It might be what someone else has done , that gets you involved in their problems , in some unforeseen way . Have you ever thought why those new car ads show empty roads , on a bright and sunny day , with happy smiling people , without a care in the world . Because that's the dream , they're trying to sell you . But that's not real life . It's just make-believe . Save yourself a whole load of trouble , and let someone else do the worrying for you . And apart from anything else , you'll always have money in your pocket , doing that .
True story. I had a 1990 Toyota Camry stick shift. One day I found some punks broke into it, jammed the ignition to ON. But obviously the car didn't move because these young punks had no idea how to even start a stick shift, not to say drive one. This was in California.
It ABSOLUTELY works. I had a 69 corvette that I had a kill switch professional installed. I always parked the car so it could not be towed as often as I could.
As a professional auto mechanic, I got to see several different "kill switch" installations but the most ingenius theft prevention did NOT include an aftermarket switch of any kind. It was NOT a kill switch but a START PREVENTION system. The owner had the starter relay connected to the HIGH BEAM side of the dimmer switch so the only time the starter would engage was when the HIGH BEAMS were turned on! If done properly, I would challenge ANYONE to find out why the car would NOT start!
I have an S2000, it's my most prized possession. It killed me seeing those before and after shots. I'm sorry for your friend. I recently bought an E36 to drift and is usually parked on the street so this install comes in perfect time. As usual, great video
it had a toyota badge in the parted out pictures, at 1:07. Did they steal the badge too? and E36 is gorgeous. I have a e92 M3 but def want a e36 as a daily
@@TetovoBoy If you look at the before and after it is the same vehicle and they poorly placed the Toyota badge on it. Not sure what they did it for but by looking at what is left of the front end compared to before you can clearly see it is the same car.
when your car doesn't start because your testing the killswitch and when you turn the killswitch back off so that your engine can start but your engine didn't start even though you offed the killswitch *something's wrong, i can feel it*
I installed a kill switch in my truck. Having a blast labeling it each time I take it in for routine care at my mechanic's, "Bidet" "Landing Gear", "Seat Eject", etc.
My grandpa had a lot of classic cars and would essentially make the cigarette lighter a kill switch/start button. When it was in the slot and pushed in the car started, so he'd just take the cigarette lighter with him when parked around town somewhere. I always thought it was a cool idea because you're not leaving any switch behind to find.
i've got an idea of a factory switch that is none functional (because I swapped the part in from a higher trim level version of the car), problem is it's a Momentary switch, not a toggle.
Years ago I had a 1968 GTO. For a kill switch, I just ran a wire from the ignition coil to a toggle switch and grounded it out. Worked like a charm. Times were much simpler with that generation of vehicles..no electronics, no computers, no endless array of sensors...just a lot of engine.
@@drippingwax calling boss.. Heyy boss, umm i might be abit late for work today,, car wont start and the bus just drove by. give me an hour and ill be there.. ::P
I added this to my Jeep back in 2016 when it was recovered from theft. It was completely destroyed, so I made a kill switch and took whole bunch of pics to show how it works. However, I made it with 2 switches making it obvious for anyone who would attempt to start the car, but the main kill switch was hidden. I had to moved the car before while the driveway was been renovated, but due to work, I was happy I left a note to my mother on how to run the car. Which she was able able to move it.

Great job brother. When you have the wright tools and a little bit of knowledge everything is easy. If you have these two things this video is for you, other-ways get ready to pay a mechanic for this job.
Something you could consider is a magnet switch. Mount the switch anywhere behind the plastics, and when ever you plase a magnet on top the spot opposite of the switch, the switch will turn to the "ON" position.
I was thinking of doing that actually but I wanted to make it more simple. People grasp the idea of an on/off switch easier but once you know the basics of how to do it, you can make a fingerprint scanner if you wanted!
@@chrisfix I'm not sure that a finger print scanner would be wise, simply because if the thieves were dedicated enough, or properly prepared, they could lift your prints from the vehicle
My 1986 Vauxhall Nova had a distributor and points, so I broke into the 12v supply to the coil and installed a switch and capacitor to earth, so the engine would crank but there'd be no high tension supply to the sparkplugs. When I finish rebuilding my 1970s Land Rover I'll be installing something similar. The only downside is both vehicles have mechanical lift pumps, so cranking the engine without starting will flood the engine.
From an old Air Force electronics teacher and electronics technician, just to add a small bit to your comprehensive presentation: We always had to read aloud a "caution" about probing connectors. If you've never probed a connector with multimeter leads, it's possible to damage the connector. Just do this part with a little extra care so as not to damage the connector. Excellent video - thanks!
Definitely this, working with equipment we usually keep a handful of different pins soldered to short leads for probing for a quick insert that won't risk damaging the connectors.
@@jazzy_cats Missile Maintenance. We had to inspect every cannon plug we connected. We'd have a a flashlight and would say, "Checking for burnt, broken, bent or recessed pins."
You can still win. GPS welded into the frame with 1/4" steel plate and a separate battery that is charged by the main battery. GPS receivers draw very little power and you can easily run it for over a month even after they chopped the car. Show up with extra keys and buddies, take it in broad daylight as you can prove ownership and nobody else can. This avoids fighting for your car and the theif would have to identify themselves to stop you. A siren welded into the frame on an "always on" circuit, that activates permanently once a certain wire is unplugged. Any random wire will do, try to pick one on a valuable part that can be split where it isn't seen. Nobody ever chops a frame, and this makes it so they have to cut the frame (extremely loud) to make it stop. They'll dump the car ASAP or run My dad's Austin mini got chopped in his work parking lot while he was working. You do a wonderful job explaining things that anyone can understand. In the old days we would just cut and splice the coil to the kill switch but you better know what you were doing because that coil was like a stun gun if it grounded to something you were touching! But that was in the early 70’s!
I'm from Denmark, and I don't know anyone who had their car stolen, ever. Is this really so common in the US? Also, in movies, people leave their car without locking them, wtf?
@@magnuswf I know one person who had their car stolen right from their driveway when they were sleeping, security camera caught it all. Not sure how common it really is though. Also I don't know about most people but I double check to make sure my car is locked before leaving it. With the proper tools (cheap tools) its super easy to break into most cars.
@@magnuswf mostly it's Honda's from the 1990s. If they shave down a key they can steal any of them. All my friends that have ever had Honda's from that era had them stolen multiple times. Never known anyone that had a different brand stolen. It's basically just because they're easy to steal and criminals are going to go for what's easiest.
Great video...old school guys like me been doing the samething for years so car thieves know about kill switches. I suggest running more than one switch in 2 different places. One stays on all the time unless you plan on leaving your car for a long period of time. Put the secondary switch close to the driver seat and the primary switch under the hood or in the trunk. Leave the primary switch on all the time and the secondary switched off or on. If you gotta leave your car then switch off the primary and secondary switch

Thankfully we found it today still intact, but missing a battery and my ECU. Can't wait to install my kill switch
I had my silverado stolen last October, police found it without wheels and speakers but I got it back. Now it’s got 2 trackers on it but I still feel so uneasy parking anywhere, even at home. The feeling sucks :/
yeah my civic was stolen yesterday evening. found it a couple hours later in a parking lot after my whole family basically posted it on every car group on facebook im my area
Perfect, I had a kill switch put on my 82 Riviera and it kept my car from being stolen... of course they tore up the steering column but I was glad the switch worked... good investment.!!!
True story. Somebody mugged/carjacked my neighbor a few weeks ago, but didn't even make it out of our complex's parking lot with her car because after they stalled it they just got out and ran.
ONE UPGRADE: The quick wire disconnects should be Male/Female on the switch side and the same for the other side (@10:39 & 12:15). That way, if you ever want to temporarily eliminate the switch, just unplug the switch and plug the two original wire into each other. Voila!
This is a great idea but could be implemented in a better way: add a 'momentary' push-to-make switch in the crank (or security) circuit. This way, it is automatically 'armed' when the motor is shut down (you don't need to remember to throw the kill switch). But moreover it avoids the potential danger of the fuel pump accidentally being stopped while you are driving (at which point you might miss your power steering and servo'ed brakes (if auto)).
Thanks to you, they couldnot steal the car, but they trashed and broke everything trying to start it😢, anyways thanks man im glad your channel has grown

Someone broke into the car and smashed the ignition barrel, but they couldn't steal it. The switch was also much easier to reach being on the dash amongst the other switches.
That’s awesome!!!
Smart move.
Hidden in plain sight. Nice.
I was going to say the same thing. Much easier to just earth the coil. But your switch idea is pure genius.

As a professional auto mechanic, I got to see several different "kill switch" installations but the most ingenius theft prevention did NOT include an aftermarket switch of any kind. It was NOT a kill switch but a START PREVENTION system. The owner had the starter relay connected to the HIGH BEAM side of the dimmer switch so the only time the starter would engage was when the HIGH BEAMS were turned on! i've got an idea of a factory switch that is none functional (because I swapped the part in from a higher trim level version of the car), problem is it's a Momentary switch, not a toggle.
Wish it was that simple! But this is pretty straightforward too if you know what you are looking for!

Something you could consider is a magnet switch. Mount the switch anywhere behind the plastics, and when ever you plase a magnet on top the spot opposite of the switch, the switch will turn to the "ON" position.
Very clever
I was thinking of doing that actually but I wanted to make it more simple. People grasp the idea of an on/off switch easier but once you know the basics of how to do it, you can make a fingerprint scanner if you wanted!
Its a good idea, i had this in my car but the magnet was always rubbing on the plastic so i located somewhere else that doesnt degrade

Amazed it's taken so long for this idea to re-emerge. I fitted one to my 1948 Morris minor convertible back in the 1960's.
Thanks!
has the beauty of hermetically sealed packages faded or are they still sexy A.F. in your eyes as they are mine?
Definitely this, working with equipment we usually keep a handful of different pins soldered to short leads for probing for a quick insert that won't risk damaging the connectors.

They'll dump the car ASAP or run
