    Not only does laying the stone staggered look better, it also makes it a bit more sturdy in that if one of the bottom rocks break, everything above it won't just cascade and break as well, making a gap in the wall.

      it also helps with the support somewhat, you'll find that building staggered will allow you to build walls a bit higher before needing to reinforce them with metal supports.

      Yeah, this hands down is the superior way to go. I also tend to do my walls a bit thicker (2-3) layers, all interlocking. If anything this buys me time to respond to attacks and not worry that the enemy will just roll over me.

    5:20 You can create an overhang by placing a door on the edge and snapping a stone to it, that way you don't have to free place it and it alligns perfectly

      Yeah, doors are magical items in that they give you 1/2m snapping points.

    Valheim building is best building. Love structural integrity needed. Ends up making your designs look better as they are grounded in reality. Bonus is that it feels much more rewarding when you build an epic build as you can't just float everything. You really need to think about the design.

    5:58 Fun fact, that particular design of battlement is crenellated! An embattlement is any defensive low wall, and the gaps are known as crenelles, and can be referred to collectively as crenellations.

  • @NorthernChev
    @NorthernChev 5 місяців тому +3

    More importantly, you should overlap your stone joints, rather than stacking stone blocks directly on top of one another, because Valheim calculates the strength of the wall based on whether or not you overlapped the joints. A wall with overlapped joints will withstand more of a beating than if you simply stacked your blocks one upon another.

    The pattern you refer to is actually called a *bond* . Many different Bonds exist- the most simple and the one you show is called stretcher bond. And (in my opinion) the best bond is polygonal masonry, totally amazing.

    Looks rally nice for sure. If you are trying to build something more realistically defensible though I would create the lip with with the roof tiles (wood side out) and create gaps between them to make holes that archers could fire down through. With this design enemies could just hide all day long in the creases.

    Another Hint when building up Stonbe Walls - as you clearly see he is at absolute Max regarding height in terms of stability, meaning the Stones get damaged way easier when not "green".
    Just build the Wall "thicker", make it 2 of thoose wide. Then, you can incorporate Iron Beams in the middle unseen or have it one layewr thick and have them visible or conceal them with Decor. Just use Iron Beams and the Iron Cage Tiles for floors and Cellars to support the Ceiling.

    walls with a staggered pattern are a lot stronger, because if one brick is missing, the ones above don't fall as easily. so not only does it look more realistic, there's a better chance that the wall will survive and you can spend less time repairing it. makes it a bit harder for making towers though, but the result is much better.

    At pillar placement, you could make the pillars of 2x1 stones rotated per layer..
    And in the layer that's parallel to the main wall leave out the backside stone. Use this space to alternate bricks in the main wall.

    It's nice looking and all but when building defenses I much prefer function over form. The issue with this design is enemies can pile up under the lip of the wall with no easy way for you to eliminate them and they can essentially breach it with no resistance.

  • @konras_sk4547
    @konras_sk4547 5 місяців тому +1

    wow it looks really nice, just if its outside wall it would need to figure out how to prevent enemies get under you as you wont be able to shot them from above as its overhang, but still gr8 pattern and thanks for sharing

    Great format, mate. You kind of teach some design notions, names of the details and much more. I really like this. Feels like I learn much more than just seeing someone doing a construction and copying it. What would you recommend for someone trying to get this "design sense"? Did you learn by replicating something or by studying some specific content? How much practice is important to get this style sense and set of memory reference tools? I always see this great stuff and want to get better because this carries over to other construction games too, right? Thanks for any tip.

    I like this a lot more with the staggering, but just personally I wish the stone tiles weren't so massive. I wish there were options for smaller bricks (and more floor tile shapes). They're so chunky and it bothers me lol but you definitely found a nice way to make those big ol' unwieldy pieces look a bit more refined

  • @Kedvespatikus
    @Kedvespatikus 11 місяців тому +1

    This wall looks great, but totally improper for defensive fighting. Enemies will pile up at the foot of the wall, out of your reach (if you want to stand on the top). The only weapons you could use are bombs (ooze and later bile bombs), but those are quite costly. Actual medieval fortifications had slits in order to make downward shooting possible.
    Of course, if you build it for aesthetics, that's a completely different purpose and story.

    If you haven't used Unreal Engine 5, you REALLY need to. I think you would be amazing considering your attention to detail. I just watched a bunch of your videos and was seriously impressed. There is a bit of a learning curve but there are some pretty decent tutorials here on YT. And you really don't have to understand very much to place assets and build. You can just import a height map (pre-built landscape) and your off to the races. The efficiency of UE5 is amazing. If you built this wall, for example, you could select all the static meshes that make up the wall, consolidate them into one static mesh and duplicate it. You could make a wall a quarter mile long in seconds. Then break it back down into individual assets and customize it however you need. The best part? It's free! UE5 and thousands of assets, FREE! If you watch some vids on it don't let the blueprinting scare you off. For building like you're doing here you only need the very basics and its easy to follow a tutorial. You may not need them at all depending on the assets you download. And the lighting! Ohhhhh the lighting, its AMAZING now with the update.
    Okay, I'm sorry I talked your head off. It just got me excited watching your creativity!

    • @smittysurvival
      @smittysurvival  11 місяців тому +1

      It’s so interesting you bring this up! I’ve been super interested in UE5 as a creative tool. I’ve seen some people create INCREDIBLE renderings and I’d definitely like to try it out sometime but the learning curve is definitely intimidating. Perhaps someday I’ll try it out. Possibilities are endless with that engine

    • @smittysurvival
      @smittysurvival  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks!
      For a corner I’d actually move away from the wall pattern and instead build a tower or something similar. If you really need to keep the wall you’d have to come up with a thicker pillar design that you could transition in-out of for different sections of wall that are connecting at different angles.

    It's all very well to make a boring flat stone wall into a fancy castle wall. But get back to me after you spend 1 month gathering the resources to make that into a 100ft wall around your base. In most situations, the issue is 'time' cost of farming up all that stuff, and delaying doing the next boss or whatever, to make something fancy. Nobody can be bothered. lol
    However, it IS possible to make something fancy with very little extra time spent, and no extra resource.
