The old Vikings used to create forts where the walls were just raised mounds of dirt with a stake wall. So the terrain wall is historically accurate.

Hypothetically, if some giant blue troll were to smash a massive tree into a simple stone wall, there is no way that wall wouldn't collapse. There are good reasons why historical fortifications had really thick, earth-filled walls and moats. A stone wall on its own just isn't very resistant to impacts.

One of my biggest gripes with this game is the supremacy the defensive mound/gap. There are loads of defensive build pieces which are useless in comparison because even tiny enemies do absurd amounts of damage to built structures. I stopped using them after a pack of wolves bit through my stone walls in about 3 seconds.

My current base is built on a peninsula, so the only entrance is the tiny bit connecting to the mainland. No moat required, but I did build the land up in places, and built stone docks above the water line, making it impossible for any swimmers to gain access to the base itself. I also made a cheeky wall along the shore which forces the mobs to path hundreds of meters down the shore to get around, effectively making them de-aggro.

I always end up building as far out in the water as I can. Pretty much boat accessible only. (Without creative) you have to snake a very long land bridge out where you want it to be and then you raise the ground to its maximum height (which will still be underwater), then you start placing stone blocks to get it up above the water line, then you build on top of the stone blocks. To prevent land access, you just go dig up what you can of the land bridge (and you can wait for big waves to dig it back down even further). If you build far enough out, nothing will spawn during raids at all. Haven't even had fliers spawn yet. Plus, unlimited fishing right out my front door. I also do this for my portal hubs. Nothing bothers you out in the water.

I'm back playing Valheim again. While effective, I'm not a big fan of motes aesthetically speaking. I use a two-base strategy. For my "fortress" (where I live), I like to find a mountain that has cliffs on three sides, usually in the Black Forest biome. I then only need to create a short ravine across the backside and create a narrow bridge with two halves with a gap as you demonstrated so nicely. I also have a nice farm in the meadows lands, but I don't put a bed or portal in it. I have another workbench with a bed and cook fire just off to the side of my farm that is just in a shack. I always sleep and have my respawn point there, when I'm working on my farm. I did have my farm attacked once and have no explanation why, but other than that one exception, my strategy has worked like a charm. One time when Valheim was quite new, I had a large stone fortress I was quite proud of utterly destroyed by trolls. I vowed never again! : P
I also found that planting trees outside at vulnerable parts of your base does work for trolls. They will go around them allowing you to funnel them to a place on your base that is better fortified and easier to defend.

    • @Westernwilson

I typically just find a decent-sized island and spawn-protect it with torches (technique is to place a log next to the torch, and then clip another log into the torch so the torch is protected but the flame still above the second log - lighting and protection at once, and it looks like a giant candle). The only thing you need to worry about then is bats. The rest spawn so far away, if they even spawn, that they can't get to you in time before the raid ends.
I have a base that has been attacked by bats twice, and not a single thing besides that.

    @randomaccessfemale 10 місяців тому +8

Easiest is to dig a moat and use the stone for a wall. That will keep most mobs away. However, the safest place for your base is a small island far away from land. You just need a few workbenches.

  • @TheWtfnonamez
    @TheWtfnonamez 9 місяців тому +6

    Great video mate.
My personal strategy is to build one main mega-base with a portal hub, which radiates out into minimalist portal shacks, with just a bed, fire, box etc. Obviously this means Im really invested in main base defence.
Since I portal out to anything I need, I opt for building on a meadows island, somwehere central in the map[, where there is good sea access in every direction.
I raise the ground WELL above the highest sea level, trim off any excess land by digging down as far as I can go, and wall everything up, putting a roof over everything including corridors. I also build internal metal doors in case of a weird spawn or some new patch.
On an island its really easy to block spawns just with the work benches that are naturally dotted around for future building and maintenance. I also keep my pig farm entirely roofed in, and my chicken coop is a literal stone bunker with a stone roof. I learned that lesson after bats wiped out my entire 2 star pig farm. I also put a secondary wall around them to stop poison from hitting them through the wall.
Currently Im leaving one area of the island free, and building massive defences against that spot. This way if I get a raid I can still fight it at a location of my choosing, under terms that I dictate. Its free farming ftw.
Im still concerned about seeker raids, because despite them not being supposed to spawn in meadows, Ive heard of it happen via bugs etc.
But yeah.... island build, raised ground, stone walls, internal moats and doors, roof over everything I can, and always assume that you missed a spot somewhere and you will wake up in the morning with some random mob smashing up your garden.

All excellent choices! Thank you for all the visual measurements and videography - very well edited!! Incidentally, I've had success building villages on a /very/ subtle plateau (about 4m taller than the surrounding terrain). Doing so looks more organic than a Moat, plus no bridge requirements. And looking outward from the plateau reminds me of an 'infinity' pool; there's no unsightly Wall of Dirt encircling the town that needs to get hidden by build pieces. With that method, I skip spawn prevention techniques so the passive wildlife and ground walking mobs complete the appearance of a natural habitat and act as First Line of Defense against raids.

Two of my favourite base degence methods have been
    a) building a whole "village" of 2x1 tiny huts with a single crafting bench inside to negate spawns. It is not fool proof, but it helps control where raids and enemies will come from.
    b) planting treelines to bare access to the base. Mostly keeps Trolls out, but it also befuddles some other enemies from time to time.

    My go to build is:
Underground base under the Elder alter.
The terrain when dug down to the max is very flat, the altar is an indestructable roof, there is an infinite burning fire for your bed/comfort and you can extend your build to the top of the alter if you need more space.
The 4 corner pillars even allow for a pretty high structure.
Just big a trench around the whole alter and leave a nice amount of dirt wall around the basement to avoid damage.
If you use a portal, you can make the basement completely safe from mobs, nice if you want to raise your animals down there.

I've played quite a bit of Valheim and do love building a big base, but never thought of digging a moat! I'll have to try it one day, especially with the gap in the bridge method!
My personal method of defense is a good offense, especially when it comes to dealing with the trolls. My other method I use for my most recent world is to not defeat any bosses there, the ultimate spawn prevention. Thank Odin for the ability to hop between worlds, especially before the option of passive mobs was added, it spared me from a lot of headaches.
While I enjoy fighting in this game as well as the constant vigilance aspect of the game world, and entirely passive mobs is not what I look for, I prefer to control whether I am occupied with peaceful base building or going on an adventure.

Interesting video. I feel like earth+moat are very effective early on. At a certain point, tho, earthen walls are kinda pointless as you should be able to handle any raid that comes your way without having to hunker down inside. As for Mistlands, I don't build bases out there. I get what I need out quickly and haul it back home. Currently, I design my bases/outposts with double stone walls that have interlocking smaller pieces so an entire 4x2 piece being destroyed doesn't compromise the entire setup. Seems to work and looks nicer. Ymmv, of course. Anyway, helpful video for a fantastic game.

All you really need is the moat and dirt walls. I made a sick mountain base by starting on a hill and over the course of the gameplay i cut a giant trench out around where i wanted to build, then dug out the tip of the hill so it was like a mini mountain with my main castle on it, then on the lower level of the hill down a path i built the portal hub, store house, friend houses, etc, and then i put a wall snapped directly from my main building all the way around. Then i connected stone sections for basing and all that and eventually ended up with a giant mountain fort all connected to the same snap point. Made the entrance as the only land connection but the had that lead to a spot that had it's own moat and then a basic bridge. Almost never had any enemies go for the bridge as their pathing got confused and kept trying to go for the main entrance instead of the bridge that led to the path to the main entrance.

I put my town squarely on the intersection between a dark forest, a mountain biome, plains, and a swamp. It was the only instance I'd ever seen of all them touching in one spot and seemed like it wouldn't ever get boring.
It hasn't, I get attacked by everything, all the time. Most of the town resides closer to the mountain and dark forest.
My walls are stone blocks, triple layered with spike traps in between all of it. I have moats, and more spikes. The main building lies on top of a large mound overlooking everything around.
Most things die to the spikes, but every now and then they'll make a breach. What they don't know is that I have sections without spikes, which are full of tamed maxed out wolves.

Gap is useless against large enemies. Minimal large enemy I've seen just cross over my gapped bridge was a 3 star greydwarf brute. Stone floor bridge.
Hell, some small enemies can probably cross over. I tested with an 0-star boar. Normally it couldn't cross over, but when it moved a bit forward with a side turn, it suddenly had a foothold on the other side of the gap, enough for pathing to cross over.

Starter bases are basic, when you end up in the Plains build your "treehouse" base on the top of a stone spire. Then slowly build your main base around the base of the stone spire with deep trenches and a jump Bridge. Get some high stone walls up around the trenches and keep the buzzy pests out. Grow your wheat + Flax in peace. I often build a square spiral wooden staircase to the top of the Stone spire too. Make sure to build a protective layer of Stone walls around the base of the spire itself though. The Lox when ground stomping can smash the Stone spires to the ground easily..... then the whole lot comes down

The best base-defence is building on islands, period. I highly suggest going for a moderately sized island and simply building vertically if more room is needed. You should be able to build 3-4 stories quite easily. Just beware that you've got the entire area sufficiently covered with workbenches or other structures that prevents spawning. Also beware that islands close enough to the "mainland" can mean raids spawning on the neighbouring shores and then walking across on the bottom of the sea.
Personally I never really build a base defence on my islands. I do the stuff mentioned above and can aim for a more aestetically pleasing look which really lifts the gaming experience for me. Fields I usually have in a different location if needed Eg. other islands and just make a portal to that place. As long as there are no players near it, no attacks will happen to the crops. I hope they change this specific thing in the future so the game feels more alive and incetivizes building a base at one location rather than min-maxing.
EDIT: forgot to mention that bats and drake raids will still happen, but those are easy to handle. As long as you don't build your island base in the Fistlands biome you won't really see the What's up Gjall-raid either, thank god. That biome is so anti-player you should never aim to build there anyways.

I prefer to build fortress systems. Moat with spikes on the bottom and earthwall topped off with a full wooden wall - I also add towers to have better vantage points where I can attack enemies from the sides. Then I make one simple wooden bridge over the moat that is protected by torches and... enemies for some reason quite like attacking the bridge... which means that even if I'm not paying attention... the only thing broken is easily replaceable wooden bridge.

Building underground under the elder altar has become my main means of operation ever since I've discovered it, any other bases I build now are just functional biome or boss interfaces for me to travel between and gather resources. So my Swamp base is a simple tree house, my plains base is a very high up simple 2 floor house on top of one of those huge stone pillars so mosquitoes ignore it, and so forth

2 extra options include 1) building a base out on the water on a small island and 2) using tamed wolves, preferentially 2 star wolves.

Pro tip, use the terrain as walls for your structure. I was farming wolves and wyverns in my mountian base before I even killed elder. I basically just made a bunker with walls made out of terrain, and a basic roof and a moat that leads to an enclosure in the ground. I bait the wolves and kick them into the hole then I tame them. Wyverns? I have 9999999 arrows and a tower. How did I climb the mountain? 70 sheds with bonfires and alot of ladders

First thing we do as soon as we get the ability to craft a boat is go find a little island chain classed as Meadow and build on that. You still get the random stray greyling or something but no big deal. EZ.

I was able to get some work benches hidden in the ground a few times. It was finicky, but I built two of the stone floors, put the bench on it. Then placed the large stone walls on top of the floors and that allowed the bench to stay inside. I was able to add terrain on top. Took a few tries though and in some spots it was impossible. I have a private forest now though.

2 star wolves. It got to a point of overpopulation because they would keep killing deer and multypling. But then it transformed into an ecosistem: once heavy duty raids came (flying, blobs, poison), they would reduce, but then deer started to spawn again, so they began to multiply. Now the only downside it having so many drops around the base all the time.. so spawn prevention might be better

best base defense is to start building a base in a very good location. such as an isolated island, indestructible objects, places where water is present. isolated part of the land covered with rocks etc. Open places are good to build too as long as you build a lookout area where you can shoot everything. also, you can partially bury your workbench and they won't be able to hit it.

I found a tiny island in the middle of the ocean and put a gate down then built it up higher than storm wave level. Then built a 3 story tower on top of it. Have been through swamp attacks, ground shaking, and forest unrest and never seen 1 mob. After a few minutes, it goes away. One level houses nothing but gateways, 1 is storage and production, Roof has a bonfire on top of it and wind mills.

My fortress plan is to find a skeleton tower in the mountains, dig deep, and build a base inside the ground. Currently my base has a double stone floor ceiling, so nothing is getting through that. It has five stories and plenty of room, and I can still build more on top of it. Plus, since it's situated on a cliff, almost nothing other than drakes even come close to it.

honestly one of my favourite defensive setups is soooooo simple most have no idea about it mobs won't attack the backside of a staircase marble or stone doesnt matter i do a line of staircases slightly sunken into the ground all the way around my base with the stairs facing towards my base and the flat back facing towards the mobs the mobs will endlessly walk into the flat side of the stairs and never attack.

I just like to put workbenches everywhere inside little houses. Then I can just run around with the build menu open checking for any areas that don't have coverage. The torches work but only look nice when they are lit and if you have really massive projects keeping them fueled is not an option.

I have both a dirt wall and a moat surrounding my main base. And it's massive in size. The area my base occupies is very big, and i have an even larger area surrounding it before it meets the moat and the wall. Then i obviously populate the entire area with work benches. Besides, all my base is enclosed in stone. I have indoor animals and the warehouse, so no flying enemies get inside.

One 1 of my worlds i have abut 120+ 2 star wolves that surround my base. So far the only attackers come from the ground. as soon as a event starts, it ends within no time killing so manny by my wolves. Also allot of wildlife spawns close to my base so my wolves are always getting fed and thus multiply even more. The luck i had with 1 hp left before i trapped the 2 star wolf was quit something and heart thrilling. Getting damage from the cold first and then the wolf trying to kill me, still mission completed.

The gap can fail if you get a bunch of mobs pushing each other over the gap. In the case of a troll raid, trolls can actually push each other into your moat, and then out of your moat and into your base. So think about that. Spikes on the inside edge of your moat are helpful but annoying to maintain.
