    Thats a nice bridge. I think it is likely they eventually add large stone arches into the game, although at this rate it is probably 10 years away, in Valheim 2.

      Fingers crossed they do! Would make this whole process much easier!

    In case there's someone who struggles with making circles free hand I can recommend using a sign, finding a circle (Maybe "◌" or just the letter "o") in the character map and blow that up to a size you like and put that on the canvas wall and just follow that with the beams. "How to use signs"-videos should be available on UA-cam.
    With that said, love the video and the bridge!

    Haven't tried it myself, so idk if it'd be any better, practically speaking, but you might try implementing a technique that mirrors a binary search in a sorted list when drawing out the circle. That is to say, mark your beginning and end points (top of circle, bottom of circle on one side), then place a beam that you think decently marks the halfway point in the curve between the two points. Then repeat the process, except between this halfway point and your original two endpoints. Rinse and repeat. After every iteration, the halfway point you're placing on the curve gets easier and easier to estimate because the curve you're estimating for gets smaller and smaller, which should ultimately help draw a more "perfect" curve. Since you're placing these beams on what is ultimately a grid, you can fairly easily mirror these placements as well to get a more reliably symmetric look.

    • @smittysurvival
      @smittysurvival  Рік тому +12

      Oh I really like this suggestion! Like a mathematical based approach to keeping your curves consistent. Genius! I’ll have to try this out!

      @@smittysurvival When you do I'd love to know how it worked out for you! I imagine it might take a hot minute to get used to it in a practical sense, but if it produces good results then it might be a practice worth cultivating. Not that what you were doing already didn't have a good looking result, mind you! I just figure that there are times where precision and a specific process is desired over winging it.

      The 45 and 26 deg beams can be used to add more mark points along the circle, because it should have a constant radius from any part of the edge to the center.

    You mentioned the back side looking a bit wonky, but honestly it just adds to the authenticity. A dead viking using a hammer made out of rocks and sticks building a giant stone bridge like this is going to have some imperfections. My favorite builds are the ones that have those bits that make the whole thing not look completely sterile and perfect.

    If you were to remove the wooden beams of the arc, would the bridge collapse?

    • @smittysurvival
      @smittysurvival  Рік тому +1

      Good question. I don’t think so because what’s holding up the stone is the wood-iron beams of the core, not the wooden beams below - these are only needed as snapping points for the stone placement.

    How do you deal with wood rot from rain on your builds? As far as I know, the only way to avoid it is by putting a roof over everything. Do you just ignore it? I love the aesthetic on everything you make and definitely want to use a lof of this in my own builds, but I i am curious about the wood rot aspect

    • @johnpombrio
      @johnpombrio Рік тому

      That is what mods are for.

    • @smittysurvival
      @smittysurvival  Рік тому +2

      You can do this in a couple of ways.
      1. Mods if you’re on PC
      2. Use in-game console commands to set the Envioronment to Clear - no rain means no rot.
      Ultimately I don’t mind the wooden rot look that much. I’ve learned to live with it, but it just depends what project I’m working on in terms if I allow it or not.

      Maybe extend some light sources (most do prevent spawns) in both directions. Then only the opposite directions (river) need to be spawn proofed another way.
      Good point though!

    • @Ryöken17
      @Ryöken17 Рік тому

      @@nozee77 if you spawn proof with light source, they can destroy it, i experienced this with skeleton archer in my base, after they destroy one, others respawn. The best way to proceed is hidding the base of the light source, if they can't see it, they can't target it.

    So I was lying awake at about 5 this morning thinking about this fantastic bridge, and I remembered a technique for making ruffles that is basically the same as what UltraXan said in their comment. Something that you can do in combination with that is using the 1x1 wood walls instead of the 2x2s to make easier starting snapping points, like you did with the 1 meter beams for the iron and wood beams. That also lets it be more of a grid paper style mirroring situation rather than quite so much freehand, or at least that's what my finicky semi-obsessive (and completely hopeless at drawing circles freehand) self thinks. I think I'm going to wind up trying those techniques (as well as using the core wood where possible because when you were doing your freaking amazing tree house pathways, it looked a lot more like what I'd be after), and if it works as hoped I'll let you know. I'm thinking that it'll be something more like those three-arch storybook-style bridges if it's not too far out of my abilities...
    As a side note, have you ever played Aloft? It's in alpha, but it's free and it has a lot of building pieces, including curves, that can allow for some pretty great homes. I think I've heard that the devs are pretty good at listening to suggestions from players, and from a builder of your ability's pov I think that you'd probably have some thoughts.
