I think Patchface takes on the role of the jester/joker. In old days they were supposed to act as the devil's advocate for rulers, keeping their ego in check and giving perspective (Watch Joker by Alan Watts). Over the years and a few short tempered rulers, they began to veil their criticisms in humor/songs. Similarly, Patchface is doing the same but no one reads into his sayings, except those who are perceptive.
Patchface died in the sea and the Drowned God brought him back to be his prophet. He volunteered to go to Hardhome, saying "We'll ride into the sea and out again." Whenever he talks about the sea, he means death ("under the sea, fish eat us" "under the sea, bodies fall up" etc.). So at Hardhome, going into the sea means dying and coming out means being reanimated. He may have a hand in bringing on the Long Night.

Definitely going to be key differences from the show with the concepts covered in this vid in terms of overall semantics , where characters are and general motivations. I have been leaning towards Shireen being sacrificed for Jon for a bit now ; with Jon's resurrection in general there is going to be more cost and likely more ritual sacrifice from Mel unlike the show's more simplistic hair washing and incantation version. So Shireen is a prime candidate here for a sacrifice connected to Jon , with ample textual clues for it. Stannis i do not see being directly involved or okaying her sacrifice in any way (even if he was in close proximity which he almost certainly will not be) as he does hold value for his daughter ; Selyse on the other hand the level of fanatic she is I would think would sign off Shireen's sacrifice if its something she deems rather important to the cause (not just a weather reprieve like the show). And this likely sacrifice is surely going to have ramifications on numerous levels and a general narrative catalyst for characters / arcs around and affected by the event. Patchface is interesting , somewhat bummed he was not in the show but in hindsight I am sure they would not have portrayed or captured him well anyway. In the books the prevalence of him in visions and another somewhat resurrected character who has prophetic / vision attributes / elements about him , does seem he has some integral role to fulfill , which may even manifest in his sacrifice. @@Paganscot i think there are a few differences there , for one Thoros resurrected Beric practically immediately after death each time which likely requires less cost / intervention , although there is surely some type of cost within Beric losing more and more of himself with each death. Catelyn required Beric giving his life to resurrect her as Lady Stoneheart after a few days had passed since she died. And as far as we are aware Mel has not done this successfully before so it would make sense for her to want to heighten her power (likely per the sacrifice) to get it done nd we do not know for sure if she is using the exact same method / spell as Thoros anyway. Ntm parts of her magic seems more tied with blood sacrifice in general with her after / coveting certain types of blood. Also as of now we do not know how long it will be between Jon's death and resurrection , where if a lot of time has elapsed between death and resurrection is at play this whole action looks a much more challenging task. Nor do we know if will cost more or less to get a soul / spirt that is in another entity (direwolf) back into their body with Ghost acting as a soul jar for Jon. At the 4:20 mark -- I think Quinn has a point, though perhaps not in the way we think. What if Mel's visions of Patches surrounded by skulls was a hint from GRRM about who Patches is? Meaning that he's a green-seer. Mel's vision of Patches in the flames and Bran's coma vision could be interpreted as similar: "...Many a time I have glimpsed him in my flames. Sometimes there are skulls about him..."-Mel "There was nothing below him now but...a frozen wasteland where jagged blue-white spires of ice waited to embrace him. They flew up at him like spears. He saw the bones of a thousand other dreamers impaled upon their points..."-Bran What Mel sees could be a reformation of what Bran saw. We know Mel seems to fear Patches because of her visions, and the only other time a fire vision scares her is the one where Bran and Bloodraven are staring back at her through the flames. Two greenseers. There's a lot more to the theory than that, too much to include in a comment, but just thought I'd mention the bits about the skulls since their possible meaning was touched upon in the video. It's also worth noting that if this were true and Patchface stepped onto Shireen's pyre, burning a greenseer could have interesting implications for Jon's resurrection. Maybe it'll awaken the gift in Jon, similar to the Jojen paste bolstering Bran's abilities. This could be what makes Patches more significant than Stannis as Quinn suggested. We know Bran tried opening Jon's third eye while Jon was in Ghost; maybe this inadvertent sacrifice will do what Bran couldn't. Further, Jon's direwolf has red eyes, and red eyes are the mark of a greenseer. Perhaps I'm misreading things but it seems like there's been some groundwork laid here.
In Homer's Iliad, King Agamemnon sacrifices his daughter Iphigenia to appease Artemis, change the winds and get the Greeks to Troy. When he gets back to Mycenae a decade later, Queen Clytemnestra murders him in revenge. Not an exact parallel, but close.
@@songbird7450 True! GRRM likes gender swaps and so do I. Hard to tell from the show how involved Selyse was in burning Shireen, but I bet she's gonna have a big reaction to it either way and so will Stannis (regret, guilt, shame etc)
Could it be that Patchface will go berserk when Shireen is killed, and the reason Melisandre feels so scared of him is that he will either kill her or be such a threat that she fears for her life? She said that she first learned to see danger to herself, and her intense fear/dislike of Patchface could be related to this
Well, patchface is a thing of his childhood, he is crazy, but that does not mean he is automaticly a threat. Nothing ever happened so there is no reason for Stannis to be cautious of him. That would be quite predjudiced! We know he is conected with higher powers and see Mels fear of him without the trust that builds with knowing someone as harmless for years. Stannis is pragmatic, he does not believe in the badmouthing of people and for him there is no indication of Patchface beeing anything but harmless and broken. Realy up toll this point to my knowlage patchface has not done anything to earn Stannises mistrust so I would not blame him for leaving a companion of his childhood with his daughter
It might have started out of the fact that Shireen, when she showed first signs of greyscale, would have had hardly anyone willing to go near her. A crazy boy might have been "disposable" enough to give Shireen at least some company while everyone was waiting to see if the disease would go dormant.
On many ocassions Patchface starts a phrase with the words "under the sea" . I noticed that if you replace under the sea with Valyria it kida makes sense. But you need to iluminate us on his quotes. He is the most misterious chatacter in ASOIAF, even more misterious than Quaithe
Lovely to have another video from you two! I definitely thought the television show story behind Stannis burning Shireen was totally lame. If he is somehow involved in the decision, then it would have to be an existential threat, like a literal attempt to save mankind from the Others, IMO. Though I won’t be surprised if he isn’t there at all either.
This is the one I was waiting for. Discussions about Patchface. His connections to prophecy and the deep ones. That is a plot threat I’m waiting to read
You guys should cover Hardhome. I think it will be the prologue chapter in Winds. Melisandre said none shall return from there. It seems much darker than the tv series, wildlings are eating the dead, Black fleet is broken, losing half it’s ships, the dead are in the woods and “things” are lurking in the water. It seems really ominous and creepy.
Ok so this is MY prediction, or atleast how I see it happening. I think they will try to sacrifice Shireen to the Red God, but when they go looking for her she's missing. Everyone goes crazy looking for her cause they believe that if they give her to the Red God they'll be safe but, when they find her she's been drown by Patchface as a sacrifice to the Drown God. Then they'll end up sacrificing Patchface to the Red God.
I don't know about drowning, but I could see Patchface trying to mercy kill Shireen so that she doesn't have to go through being burnt alive. I suppose he could try drowning her if his intent is to bring her back similar to the Iron Born drowning ceremony. Maybe he interprets "what is dead may never die" as immunity against being burnt.
Thanks for all the videos I love when you two team up! I just recently found your videos and have been watching both of you guy's channels and love the theories You make my work days enjoyable!!
These are great guys. Not overly long and the style of the room and table are on point. Also likin the classier look. You guys have solid insight keep it up
Glad to have you guys back I was going through vid withdrawals after that amazing March you guys provided us! Also shoutout to my boy Quinn with the fresh cornrows tho lmao.👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Finally! I was starting to be worried that you had stopped this serie. Don't you dare!! I love your various insights and analysis of the books. Great content, as always. Thanks also to give some attention to a couple of characters that are less present in the books but are as enigmatic and relevant to the story.
I feel that Patchface is connected to Euron in some way. All this talk about underwater beings and Euron wants to raise all sorts of creatures with his "sea of blood" plan.
I love the many styles of Quinn. hope ye guys are taking this pandemic on your stride and thrive. great time for reflection, introspection and changing of routines! also a great time for asoiaf content! loving every video!
I absolutely love these. After these are done, I’ll be looking forward to the actual book being released and am hoping to see the 2 of you going over all of these plot lines again and comparing what you thought would happen against what actually happens in the book. I really like the chemistry between the two of you. More collaborations for you two, please!
Just a random input about this scene: In the german version the forshadowing works a little different as Snow (Jon) and snow are both written capital in german so we dont get the hint in the Mel chapter. Therfore they changed this quote to something like: every time I ask Rhollor for the king he only shows me you (to Jon Snow). Implying also she always saw him when she asks for Azor Ahai when she saw s/Snow
I looked this chapter up and it turns out it wasnt this chapter/qoute that was altered. Could be that I was misreading something but I remember beeing supprised because Mel was so direkt to Jon. If I find it I will comment the exact quote translated.
Man, I had a mini heart attack when a saw it first thing on notifications. Keep up with this stuff guys its unbelievable!! (Also Patchface has the most fucked up lines in the book imo and I love it)
Guys you make the wait on wofw worth while! Love you 2 working together. Keep up the good work! God as a mother I dread the idea of a sacrificed Shireen. And I hope we learn more about patch face in the upcoming book. Quin did a video bout him and ever since I hope to learn more
Second queen, after Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra has an army! I hope the bit about dragons doesn't mean Dany's literal dragons are in any way involved. No Evil Dany, please!
If the reader is present for the burning of Shireen, it will almost certainly be a Mel POV. Jon is dead (for now), Davos will be marshalling an army to retake the Wall and George says she's misunderstood. Well, put us in her mind and show us how she feels about killing a little girl. It has the potential to be one of the best scenes in the entire series. Or maybe the wildlings will misunderstand her burning rituals and kill Shireen because of the greyscale, which will really upset Mel. I don't think Mel will purposely kill Shireen for any reason. Even for Jon. She needs a king's blood and Mance's son (that definitely wasn't swapped with Craster's son) will probably be used to bring Jon back. but he'll be more like Lady Stoneheart than Beric. It'd be an interesting sort of irony. Two of the characters who want nothing to do with each other are now more alike than anyone else in the Seven Kingdoms. I mean, there are a hundred thousand similar people north of the Wall, but that's not the Seven Kingdoms. And if we're sticking with the last thoughts of undead characters being their motivation in their new lives, Beric hunting the Moutain, Cat's hatred of the Freys, then Jon will likely spend the remainder of his existence killing turncloaks, whipping betrayal from the face of the earth. I got sidetracked. Sorry. I don't have any theories about Patcheface, but I think his songs and rhymes are more important than anyone realizes.
Thank u 2 for making these video's. I LOVE ASOIAF content, but especially now. With the lockdown in effect, we all can use more great content like this.......😀
I can’t be the only one who prefers Quinn without the fedora hat! Hahaha Nice job doggie! Awesome content as always guys! I am rereading the books and these insights are really helpful!
I really believe that after hearing Stannjs is dead in the pink letter(I don’t think he’s really dead)selyse it Mel will burn shireen asking to bring back azor ahai/ the prince that was promised and Jon will rise back from the dead...and that will be when Mel starts to support Jon instead of Stannis
Well maybe not, because Stannis is far from the wall and they may not be able to do that, even though it is a good idea. Most likely Shireen will be used to bring Jon back, after Melisandre confirms that he should be brought back. But she has never brought anyone back,or has nor met Beric Dondarrion so she knows that she can bring him back
Donald J Gump Official because Mel is a religious zealot who wholeheartedly believes that stannis is the prince that was promised/azor ahai...the moment jon comes back to life she will switch to supporting Jon.
All Patchface has to do to fulfill the "bloody lips, while surrounded by skulls" prophecy is : say the wrong thing, and get people killed. I predict the wildlings will insist on killing Shireen (because she's infected). Melisandre will convince them to let her do it her way, to bring back jon (so she feels like she's making the best of a bad situation). I bet Selyse flips out and tries to protect her daughter, so they are burned together (echoing the 2 skulls in the heart tree that night's watch found). Then Melisandre is like "we should never tell Stannis about any of this." But patchface goes ahead and tells stannis. I'd bet Stannis returns and intends to work with Jon to fight the Others, but because of this betrayal he just can't. (plus, there's stinging symbolism in the way Patchface is a fool stag. So Stannis's only remaining symbol to cling to is: what a foolish baratheon he's been)
If Mel and the queen think Stannis is dead( from the pink letter), then they would burn the daughter to bring Stannis back to life. But as Mel is trying to bring back Azora Hi, it will be Jon who comes back to life, and Mel will finally realize who Azora Hi really is. At least that's my theory.
White Walkers already have two wights inside, Jon had two corpses brought in and had them watched but after his death there might be no one being told to watch them...
We've already seen that Beric and even Catelyn didn't require a fire and blood sacrifice. So why would Jon? I mean, is there evidence that Mel failed red priestess school? I think the burning is for Stannis. Because what else would you do when you think the most important person in the world has died? You pull out all the stops. Maybe by proxy Jon will be revived instead (bc Stannis isn't dead). Then Mel will go on thinking that Jon is Azor Ahai instead and then Stannis will come back. Very messy.
The king being burnt by his crown that Stannis sees could be Viserys perhaps? This might be one of those instances that when people have visions like this, they can only interpret it within their context, but who's to say he was not seeing the past? Like with Melisandre, when she asks something of R'hlor, she doesn't have enough information to even understand the answer. Other visions in the books also show things out of context, like Dany seeing the Red Wedding. She is far removed from that event and the people involved. The Ghost of High Heart also sees the Balon Greyjoy.
I think that Mya, Gendry and Edric will become "Robert's Great Bastards", just like how Shiera Seastar, Bittersteel, BloodRaven and Daemon Blackfyre were called "Aegon's Great Bastards"!
*Away, away, come with me beneath the sea, away, away, away.* Patchface sings this to Shireen, so we can expect her death in the books to have some correlation with the Red God and/or Patchface. So, yeah I think your theory sounds about right!
"Skulls all about him, his lips are red with blood"... that could be a reference to the Knight of Skulls and Kisses, Ser Richard Lonmouth (who could be posing as Lem Lemoncloak, if a popular theory is correct)
Nice cornrows Quinn. Getting some 90s NBA vibes... maybe Allen Iverson or even Sprewell? Now you just have to convince LML to keep growing out his hair so he can get a matching set, you know, for the symbolism. Cornrows for the Green God!
Patchface and Shireen both burning at once to wake a dragonblooded person (maybe) makes me think of Rhaegar Jinglebell Frey and Cat Stark dying together to awaken the vengeful spirit of LSH. I also think it's possible that Mel might have someone glamored as Davos at her side if she and Selyse are involved in burning Shireen. Mel makes that comment about how a bag of fingerbones can be used to make a good glamor, plus the level of betrayal Stannis would feel if his three biggest advisors/people closest to him joined together (in his pov, since he wouldn't know that wasn't the real Davos) killed his child while he was gone...the tragedy alone would be just perfect for Martin and would fit into the idea of the crown burning everything he loves to ash.
I hope Patchface will find a way to get Shireen or get her remains to the sea ask "The King of The Mer-People to bring her back like he did him (or so the theories say) but instead the Mer-people King does bring her back but for himself as his queen or she comes back more crazy than Patchface and Patchface and Shireen go make a life together in like some F-ed up place like Ashai or in the actual shadow.
I love this episode but one thing I think youre both over looking is that Stannis still can die in the Battle of Ice, and I would agrue it makes sense for him to. The chain of events could be like: -Stannis dies at Winterfell. -The Wall gets word of their defeat. -Seyles and Shireen get word of his death. -Theyre both heartbroken and Seyles offer Shireen to Rhylor to ressurect their assumed Azor Ahia, Stannis -The sacrificial ritual ressurects Jon instead Is always the way I pictured it going.

So Stannis might go berserk if he comes back to the wall?
@@songbird7450 If it follows the pattern, Selyse would kill him in the bath with an axe.
@@rebeccaridolfo6538 Since Selyse is at the wall, maybe the genders are swapped. Sounds like an GRRM thing to do
@@songbird7450 True!
She said that she first learned to see danger to herself, and her intense fear/dislike of Patchface could be related to this
Definitely, I think so
I mean the blood can be Melissandres in th vision.
That whole thing about Patchface having blood on his mouth... Maybe it's about his prophecies about many people dying?
Patchface is the jar jar of ASOIAF. He is the key to everything
This is the only thing that’s getting me through quarantine
Jada Farmer Girl, same
These videos are phenomenal, and are really helping folks through the quarantine. Thanks for the quality content, guys.
Everyone knows patchface is pretty crazy, I have no idea why Stannis thinks he is a good playmate.
He's the one thing he has left of his parents.
Right??? "Let the lonely little girl run around with creepy! It'll be good for her"
Well, patchface is a thing of his childhood, he is crazy, but that does not mean he is automaticly a threat.
@@Jess-yo9rt Shireen is the normal highborn in her family
On many ocassions Patchface starts a phrase with the words "under the sea" . I noticed that if you replace under the sea with Valyria it kida makes sense. But you need to iluminate us on his quotes. He is the most misterious chatacter in ASOIAF, even more misterious than Quaithe
Not nearly enough material on this subject out there! Perfect for keeping me going at work thanks guys!
Hey, not a bad idea!
George has said that Jeyne Westerling will appear in the prologue chapter so it won't be Hardhome

Patchface is frontrunner for my favorite character of all time ❤ awesome to have another episode today, thanks fellas 🤘
Wouldn’t really follow Patchface’s character to kill off Shireen
That seems really unlikely
You guys have solid insight keep it up
very glad you two are back with this preview thx
Glad to have you guys back I was going through vid withdrawals after that amazing March you guys provided us! Also shoutout to my boy Quinn with the fresh cornrows tho lmao.👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Finally! I was starting to be worried that you had stopped this serie. Don't you dare!! I love your various insights and analysis of the books.
Great content, as always. Thanks also to give some attention to a couple of characters that are less present in the books but are as enigmatic and relevant to the story.
Could never get tired of you two collaborating on videos. Also, nice cornrows :D
I feel that Patchface is connected to Euron in some way. All this talk about underwater beings and Euron wants to raise all sorts of creatures with his "sea of blood" plan.
Patchface is definitely connected to the drowned god. Would be funny if he killed Euron for disrespecting the drowned god
Now do the rickon on Skagos video !
This is definitely my favorite format for these videos. I know you two moved... I hope it was closer together
Shireen is lovable in both the books and the show...I don’t want a anything to happen to her but...
You have no idea how much I love that you stuck that little chibi G.R.R.M doll inside the Weirwood cup.
You guys have motivated me to get back into making asoiaf videos so ty!
Bit late to the party, but I'm laughing my drunken arse off thinking that John Snow transcribes as yon schnee in Deutsch
Man, I had a mini heart attack when a saw it first thing on notifications. Keep up with this stuff guys its unbelievable!! (Also Patchface has the most fucked up lines in the book imo and I love it)
Thank god I thought y’all weren’t gonna continue this series! I’m so hype for your rickon prediction! He’s looks so bad ass in the teaser.
Guys you make the wait on wofw worth while! Love you 2 working together. Keep up the good work!
God as a mother I dread the idea of a sacrificed Shireen. And I hope we learn more about patch face in the upcoming book. Quin did a video bout him and ever since I hope to learn more
Thanks for keeping me entertained during the quarantine.
keep this videos coming, they are awesome
Second queen, after Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra has an army! I hope the bit about dragons doesn't mean Dany's literal dragons are in any way involved. No Evil Dany, please!
One of my favorite aspects of this entire series is Patchface. Can't wait to see where this goes. Still hyped for TWoW TO THIS DAY!!!
Thank god you guys are back at it
If the reader is present for the burning of Shireen, it will almost certainly be a Mel POV.
So fucking happy to see this new video popped up!! Love your all’s collaborations. Keep em coming
love you guys, thank you for the video!🥰
Holy F***ing S***, it's Quinn.

Patchface continues to be the character that is the most interesting to me, and really MISSING him in the show.

Good episode. Nice braids Quin!

Lmao I needed that Little finger joke. Great video LML and Quinn 👍
Thanks for a thought-provoking video on my favourite princess and her fool.
Great video, thank you. I love these discussions.
My man Quinn looking good with the braids!
But she has never brought anyone back,or has nor met Beric Dondarrion so she knows that she can bring him back
Why would Melisandre support Jon over Stannis? Couldn't she see the value in both of them and value them equally?
So Stannis's only remaining symbol to cling to is: what a foolish baratheon he's been)
I love your patchface singing voice
Loved this video fellas, can't wait for the next!
I love your videos! Do you know what that eerie/scary music you use at the beginning is called? The one you play when you read off the chapter text.

Lml lookin pretty sick and Quinn sittin awfully close
Not sick, just tired, and we filmed this in Feb. Thanks tho
Lucifer means Lightbringer glad to hear
If Mel and the queen think Stannis is dead( from the pink letter), then they would burn the daughter to bring Stannis back to life. But as Mel is trying to bring back Azora Hi, it will be Jon who comes back to life, and Mel will finally realize who Azora Hi really is. At least that's my theory.
White Walkers already have two wights inside, Jon had two corpses brought in and had them watched but after his death there might be no one being told to watch them...
Niiice
Didn't know there was episode coming out today
Will you and Quinn do an episode about the fate of the Bastards? Edric, Mya, Gendry, and maybe even more that you think might be bastards?
I think that Mya, Gendry and Edric will become "Robert's Great Bastards", just like how Shiera Seastar, Bittersteel, BloodRaven and Daemon Blackfyre were called "Aegon's Great Bastards"!
Thank y'all and I hope you're both staying safe 🖖🤙
Will there be any more episodes of this? Like the return of Rickon?
Yes, Quinn and I just both have ADHD and so it’s hard to say when we’ll make it happen l, but we plan to
*Away, away, come with me beneath the sea, away, away, away.*
Patchface sings this to Shireen, so we can expect her death in the books to have some correlation with the Red God and/or Patchface. So, yeah I think your theory sounds about right!
Oh how I've missed you guys!!
I cant wait for the Jon/Ghost hybrid.
You should do a reading of the book, with the right matching audio background just like you did in the begining of the video
Oh shit, you thought it was over, top works ma nerds!
"Skulls all about him, his lips are red with blood"... that could be a reference to the Knight of Skulls and Kisses, Ser Richard Lonmouth (who could be posing as Lem Lemoncloak, if a popular theory is correct)
could be... but they are so far and unconnected by plot
How does a Father and Mother come to gripes with murdering BY fire their only child. How.
You destroy your own life.
Extreme zealotry, essentially
Nice cornrows Quinn. Getting some 90s NBA vibes... maybe Allen Iverson or even Sprewell? Now you just have to convince LML to keep growing out his hair so he can get a matching set, you know, for the symbolism.
Cornrows for the Green God!
Also, what kind of harvest can you expect from a buzz cut?
Not sure if I'm late to the party here, but Quinn is rockin them rows.
I love this episode but one thing I think youre both over looking is that Stannis still can die in the Battle of Ice, and I would agrue it makes sense for him to.
The chain of events could be like:
-Stannis dies at Winterfell.
-The Wall gets word of their defeat.
-Seyles and Shireen get word of his death.
-Theyre both heartbroken and Seyles offer Shireen to Rhylor to ressurect their assumed Azor Ahia, Stannis
-The sacrificial ritual ressurects Jon instead
Is always the way I pictured it going.
Nice to see a new video!!
