  • It has been 4 years since we started building and setting up the tidal mangrove paludarium.
It has been running only with snails and bumblebee gobies, but we are finally releasing mudskippers to the tank.
Since we are in New Zealand it has been very hard to source them, but we have finally manage to get 3. After a month in quarantine at a government facility, they where available on the market.
They arrived in pretty poor condition and one was severely underweight and skinny. After another 12 days of de worming in our home quarantine set up, with plenty of various food to gain weight and get their strength back, they were finally ready to be released into the main tank.
They are Periophthalmus barbarus, Atlantic mudskippers! The only species that inhabits the west African coast line. P barbarus grows up to 25 cm and is one of the larger mudskipper species.

I really like mudskippers and mangroves and always wanted to build a tank for them, would you please make a video about how you set up the tank (how did you create the "mud"?), how do you clean it, how do you create the tides and all of that. Hope it isn't to much to ask - thank you for your videos so far! love them!

Awesome tank btw. I wonder how hard it is to clean and maintain.

It is pretty easy as it is a full ecological system and therefore keeps itself very healthy and easy to maintain. Does not require a filter for example as the mud acts as a natural filter. The occasional water change , but mostly its just topping up the water that evaporates and cleaning the glass from some algae growth that the snails miss and spashed up mud from the muddies..

I just purchased one today where did you get the mud from and that’s all the water it needs ? That looks much natural for them.
