If we place all of them on the pain scale, the least horrific one will reach a few dozen points, and the worst torture device in all of history will sit at one hundred forty!

90% of these "totally real" torture methods in all kinds of parts of the ancient world, never actually happened. Most of it was invented later. In the 17th, 18th century when they realised there was money to be made on displaying ancient torture methods. Like the Iron Maiden... Never really existed.

The bronze bull story is believed to be 100% true, but after the emperor saw the result after burning a slave up inside he was so disgusted by the whole thing that he ordered the inventor to be placed inside and burned too. After the inventor was cooked alive inside the bull, just before he died he was pulled out and thrown down a hillside to die in agony. The bull was afterwards destroyed so it could never be used again.
The bull had several tubes and horns so the screams of its victim inside would sound like the roar of wild animals - just truly awful.

This is all completely b.s. Perilaus was in fact the first person cooked alive in the Bull, and he was thrown off a cliff while still alive.

I had surgery where they cut my achilles tendon in 3 spots and broke my ankle to place a bone in between bones. They kept it in place with really long pins. Like tip of the middle finger to end of the wrist long. And wrapped it in the cast. One day while I was on crutches, I fell down a flight of stairs, but the way that I fell was really weird. The crutches were too high set, got stuck on the ground, but I was already moving forward, so I kinda toppled over them and was forced to try to not land on my head. Of course I managed to land on the heel of my foot. The vibrations I felt in the pins and the spasms that yanked on my cut tendon still haunt me. I had bruised my tailbone before and that hurt, but the pain I felt that day was otherworldly. I'd never screamed from pain before that, but I lost my voice screaming. I was kinda hoping to see something involving the Achilles tendon here to know exactly where my pain placed. I ended up losing feeling completely from the left side of my foot. It took pretty much a decade before I had good balance on that foot again. Insanely unlucky, but absolutely torturous.

My absolute sympathy, I snapped several strands on my Achilles tendon while messing about on an icy skateboard ramp...my mother didn't believe me and made me walk to school. It was only thanks to my gym teacher that I was even taken to hospital, when they put my leg in plaster I nearly fainted in pain. What a lovely summer holiday that was lol.
I too had Achilles tendon surgery. I had originally injured it a couple of years prior but I didn't go to the Dr. After 2-3 subsequent injuries (it turns out they were partial tears). This last time the surgeon had to debride the torn-up tendon area, cut out the injured area and pulled back together and into place. It wasn't until the anesthesia and pain meds that were given to me at the hospital wore off that I felt that pain you described. To make matters worse, the bedroom and shower are on the second floor. I'll let your imagination work as to how I traveled up and down the stairs.🤕

The rack was worse than you described. When the body is stretched, the muscles actually tighten around the bone, so that your own muscles actually shatter your own bones.

No one is better at inflicting torture than our own body. People with severe CRPS, Tinnitus and other painful disorders know this all too well.

You forgot to mention that Adam was unrestrained during the water torture and was actually almost able to fall asleep if it weren't for a fly that kept landing on his foot. So it's not the water torture alone, but the restraint coupled with the torture that is damaging.
I saw pictures of a man from china who suffered from Ling CHi. To add to this, they make the person drink something to heighten the sensation and worsen the pain. I still cannot forget it and remembers it once in a while. I still pray for that man until now and thankful he has long rested in peace.

The oubliette reminds me of a case a cop once told me about. A family went to their beach house and noticed a strong smell. What about the Blood eagle punishment, done by the Vikings. Where the victims were placed in a prone position, their ribs severed from the spine with a sharp tool, and their lungs pulled through the opening to create a pair of eagle "wings". That must be up there aswell

I went to the Torture Miuseum in Amsterdam once. It was terrifying. I was the only one there, which made it really creepy. I also visited a dungeon at Prague Castle. I am glad we are more civilized now.
