Yes, that is Stephen Hawking. At the beginning of the song he says,
"For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals.
Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination.
    We learned to talk."
Later in the song he says,
"It doesn't have to be like this.
All we need to do is make sure we keep talking."

When I was in college the local radio station aired the 'world premier' broadcast of the new Pink Floyd song "Keep Talking", which was the first glimpse of the Division Bell that was released. A multitude of people from all 5 floors of the residence hall tuned in and cranked their stereos to full volume to simultaneously play the song, effectively making the entire residence hall a giant speaker. A strange, but fond memory. Incidentally, the closing track of the album, "High Hopes", encapsulates that feeling of remembering the wonders and fondness of college from the perspective of being older, which makes the album even more powerful to me now than when it was released.

This song is incredibly relevant in today's world, where censorship abounds. David Gilmour was moved to tears by BT's commercial featuring Stephen Hawking's words: "Mankind's greatest achievements have come about by talking. And its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn't have to be like this. [...] All we need to do is make sure we keep talking." And looking at the world today, ripping itself apart, lead by radical ideologies that refuse to talk and reach common ground, where censorship is the default and it is applauded, it is hard to not be similarly moved to tears by those same words.

I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know, and I know all the great ones.

Deep Song. Stephen Hawking talking about how humankind learned to talk, which set us apart from the other animals, and how important communication is. The irony of the lyrics is the man is lost in his own world of isolation, not able to say what's on his mind, drowning in his own feelings... The woman pleading "why won't you talk to me? You never talk to me!" And the man just can't find the words to express his feelings out loud to her... completely wasting the gift of communication. The "tube" at the end is a Talk Box... even bestowing the gift of speech to a guitar... but Gilmour being the master of restraint lets the notes speak for him... maybe that's the man making his attempt to say what's really on his mind? Great, Deep Song.

@@DaneJacobsonMD I'm also seeing Roger in 2022. 4th time. While he isn't the most agreeable person, he puts on a hell of a Floyd show. Favorite show was the DSotM tour in 2007-2008. His reworked 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun' became my favorite live Floyd performance.

Jamel, are you my son I didn't know I had? Lol. I love the song "Us & Them". The sax will put you on the moon. They are number one since the summer i visited Alabama sitting in a cornfield (where they grew the pot, lol) at 15 smoking out like a cheech & Chong movie listening to DSOTM
For the first time. I am now 64. If I ever get alzheimer's their songs will be
The only thing I will remember. My brain has the hard drive of them, lol.
Love you Jamel. You have to watch Pulse live the whole concert. You will know what I am talking about. Keep playing and talking. Lol. Peace
Brother. I know you will know what I mean when I say the only person, besides Gilmour, who can make his guitar talk like it is talking to you is Chris Stapleton. One stroke sounds like a song. Amazing.

Attended the Pulse Tour in Houston at Rice Stadium when the Division Bell album was released in 1994... huge thunder storm, lightning, eardrum busting volume, laser lights into the night sky, smoke show, 3 gorgeous backup singers... almost like mother nature joined in on the concert. The most awesomely awesome concert of my life. I refer to it as the Pulse Storm.
Anyone else get to attend that event?

A damn good argument could be made that Gilmore is the greatest guitarist ever next to Hendrix.
He never plays a single note more or less than what the song calls for. He is the ultimate example of playing the song instead of the instrument.

David Gilmour was using a talk box to create his guitar sound on this track. A talk box is a device that allows a musician to create words through the sound of an instrument. It is what made Peter Frampton's famous talking-guitar sound possible. It is not the same as Auto-Tune, wah-wah pedal or even a vocoder. The girls singing background vocals were phenomenal on this track. in their long white flowing dresses and brilliant harmonies they looked and sounded unbelievable. I luv this track... go Pink Floyd!!! PS good job Jamel..

Hey, June 1994 , this exact concert was here in SC at the Clemson University football stadium. I was there with my sister. Packed stadium, bleachers and ground. The lasers went so high, the airport was notified to be aware of the lasers. The show didn't start til a little after 9 pm because they needed pitch dark to show them. Awesome show. Much better live! I do have the DVD of this concert. I turn it up!

Remember so well when Pulse came out in 95, trying to figure out how David played that relentless rhythmic riff that goes through the song... When i finally figured it out, it is SO simple.... Just a basic open Em chord picking and lifting one finger off alternately, AND having the right delay settings on the pedals. Only David cam come up with something so simple and so amazing at the same time... 😍
Same goes for the Take It Back rhythmic riff ...

Must react to High Hopes!! I absolutely LOVE The Division Bell and is very underrated within their catalog. Super mellow and chill album with great musicianship and female backup vocals throughout, some instrumental tracks, and a fantastic Rick Wright tune(Wearing the Inside Out. Some may say this is "Adult Contemporary Floyd", if you want to put a label on it, I say it's just a softer, mellow Floyd. Loosely based concept album of communication or the lack thereof. I Highly, Highly suggest you watch the entire Pulse DVD/concert filmed during The Division Bell Tour in 1994. It was the last full album and tour of Floyd unfortunately, though Dave would go on with his own band(with Rick Wright) and release On An Island in 2006. He's been touring with them ever since and still slays at 75!!
