Fun fact, at least for America, after the gaming crash in the 80s lots of people and retailers were wary of video games. So when the NES was released it was marketed closer to a toy which could be where the video games are for kids gained traction. Also lots of stores separate toys into boy and girl aisles. The NES was more often put with boy stuff which started the trend of girls don’t play video games. Which could contribute to why the early 2000s games shifted towards appealing towards teenage and young men you mentioned.
Seriously, I know non-gamer family members who binge watch some random TV shows every day after work. They binge and enjoy stuff like Breaking Bad, Criminal Minds, Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, The Office, Friends etc. I have NEVER seen a single episode of any of those. Yes, I have NEVER seen an episode of Friends. I have zero interest in hobbies these people have, I play videogames, and when I say I play videogames, I don't just randomly turn on Super Mario (what these non-gamer folks usually think when someone brings up videogames), I play story heavy games like The Witcher, Mass Effect, Fallout New Vegas and others. I only watch TV shows if it's something I'm interested in and if it's closely related to gaming or is "nerdy" in the nature, stuff like Game of Thrones, The Expanse, Supernatural and Vikings. At the end of the day, they need to realize that whatever you do for fun is technically "wasting time" cause it's not generating you any money or any tangible items. Watching movies, TV shows, playing videogames, reading books, playing chess, all of it is essentially "wasting your time". People need to realize that as long as it's not ruining your life and you've got your priorities under control, the time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.
What I'm confused by is that these people act like gaming is a waste of time but yet they also have the time to act smug on social media and be worried about what other people like. Isn't that a bigger waste of time than gaming? Social media is a bigger waste of time than video games ever will be.
