Painting Cabinet Handles. What to expect. Unsponsored truth.

- I painted my cabinet handles with Rust-Oleum Metallic gold spray paint and it looked great at first but eventually the paint broke down and started to deteriorate. After spray painting I tried the Rub 'n Buff antique gold and the results were way better than I expected. I wish I had put more thought into hardware and handle color before I started painting the cabinet doors.

Bro you gotta keep making more DIY projects. Your editing, video quality, and comedic timing is top notch 👌
Oh man thanks for that! Seriously.🤙
@@RinkVideo I second this!
@@veronicabarnes8097 I third this and laughed my ass off at 3:55 in the video. I think you called it a Rub and Tug. Or I was just hoping that you did.
I like you. You tell the truth and talk in terms I understand. For example “ Builder grade shit” . Got it. Nice to see your wife helping with the handles.
I first used Rub and Buff back in the 80s when I worked at a hardware store. Great product!
Your sense of humor in combination with your honest report is amazing! Can’t wait to see that kitchen spray paint video!
Love it! As a wife to a man that would walk around in fish sandals I appreciated that moment 🤣
Love the humor and your laid back realistic diy style. I subscribed when I watched the cabinets get painted. Love the fish shoes....I raised boys and my oldest would wear those out in public just to watch the reactions. 🤣
This was my favorite video when I went spiral searching for kitchen hardware DIYs. Thank you! You made my day. Your sense of humour and editing.... amazing!
You're hilarious! I subscribed immediately after the cabinet video and went straight to look for more content. I think it looks amazing so far, but if by any chance these don't hold up, I ordered the same style on Amazon in a nickel finish for my sister's kitchen and the quality was great! I think we spent less than $50 on 35 handles or so. They've held up against her kids for over a year now! I hope you keep making videos. :)
Wasn’t expecting to laugh while researching painting hardware 😂
I’m honored! Thanks for answering my question with this video.
two years later I just watched and i love the video. especially when you whisper the truth. reminds me of someone sitting next to me. I will try the product, thank you
I love your videos! Like another person said, you have a great sense of humor and your info is greatly appreciated!!
Great video! You can spend a fortune on handles.
Here are some tips before you spray your lowers. Prep, prep, prep!! I cannot overstate this enough. Especially with going black. No matter what any sprayer or paint claims there will be overspray in the air. About 75% of the time it takes to spray is in the prep. Remember that paint that falls on the floor will remain wet for a bit, so be careful of walking around with paint on the bottom of your shoes, not that I've made that mistake before, lol.
Next make sure you have a board to practice on. It is very easy to have inconsistent paint coverage. Practicing will help a lot with consistency.
I still would lightly sand in between coats, and do multiple light coats. One final thought is to understand that primer and paint usually have different thicknesses. So you might need to adjust the pressure on the gun. Best to figure that out on the practice board.
Best of luck, cannot wait to see your finished product.
You are hysterical! I enjoyed your cabinet painting video.
Cabinet and handles look spectacular ❤❤❤ Beautiful
YOU CRACKED ME UP!
LOL mission accomplished
Handles actually save your cabinets from hand grease, fingerprints and etc that accumulates on kitchen surfaces quickly with use. Specifically if those are white color.
You're funny! I love the easy nature, yet very creative videos. Thanks!
Thank you! I've been looking for a spray paint for my kitchen handles - but now, I will do Rub 'N Buff!
Black cabinets sound awesome. Can’t wait to see them.
Isn't it crazy the thing we do now since were stuck in our house all day! Great video.
I would watch so many more videos like this! You guys are hilarious!
Thanks for the heads up on the rub n buff product. Exactly what I need and didn’t know it existed.
Omg the fish sandals im dying here 😂😂😂
Came for the info, stayed for the comedy. 😂 Thanks, Bruh!
This is one of the best videos I have watched in so long. And I’m a frequent DIY prowler on UA-cam.
You have a new subscriber and can from me !!
You guys are awesome
Appreciate that C! Hopefully you got a good laugh. Thanks for the sub…you’ll be rewarded with a real zinger in the next week or two. Stay tuned!
LOVE the videos! Keep em coming!
Totally subscribed bc you made me laugh… thanks for the tips on painting handles… I’m going to just buy some new ones & get rid of the knobs 😂
Subscribed for the humor and the helpful tips!
I bought myself a sprayer to do my exterior doors this summer. They came out amazing. The overspray goes everywhere so put up lots of plastic. Wear a respirator. Trust me on that one. And it uses more paint than rolling. Happy spraying!
I subscribed, because you are hilarious and I like the honesty !
Needed this exact video. Great work and much appreciated
You’re very welcome ✌️
I totally loved this video, it’s timeless honest truth!
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know ✌️
Excellent info lol. So much of my own diy is me messing up and then buying something else and doing it again. Nice to have you spending the money first ;)
Fish sandals, rub and tug, homie depot... big fan of your honest feedback about the process. Subscribed!
Again, YOU ROCK!
Glad that you got a rub and tug... looks great!
I'm happy I watched this. I was about to spray paint my kitchen nobs 😂 with the same paint. Let us know if that rub N buff rubs off anytime soon. 😂
You do need to set up a channel. The black cabinets on bottom will look amazing. Way more fun to watch a DIY er than a professional. Plus I laughed out loud at least 3 times. Kudos to your wife for discovering rub n buff
I have the same kitchen cabinets 😅 And going to paint them white. Thank you for your video!
Love the sandals.
Gold.I was just about to spray my handles with the rustoleum paint and glad I checked here to see reviews. Will order the better product and rub a few out with it. Thanks man
😂
Look into a critter spray gun. So easy to use and easy to clean. I think it cost $45-60 it takes a Mason jar and it got a best pick for crafting sprayers. It's one of my favorites.
I LOVE the long handles
First minute had me crackin up lol! those fish sandals are hilarious btw
I feel you bro! Up to this moment those disintegrated handles are still in. Gosh! I am waiting for summer tho to completely follow what you were doing
I have this same problem. Just bought a house and trying to save money❤ Thanks for the video!!
He's back!
So glad I subscribed
Man you make me miss Canada! All our Homedepot like stores are closed here in Germany so no chance-o of any home improvements.
Really want to paint kitchen cabinets and have watched hundreds of vids but your honest reviews are the best. Thanks mate! Deffo sub'd and waiting for the under cabinet vid.
Just keep in mind that wind is howling at about 70km/h here and it's going to snow 4 cm this afternoon. Thanks for the sub!
Subscribed for the fish sandals.
😂
You're funny and informative❤
You are so funny ! I love this DIY video. Im looking to do the same. Thanks for the video tips !
I like them gold.
This was delightful to watch! I’ll be using the rub and buff for my brand new home that has silver handles… my husband won’t let me just buy new ones so I have to DIY too
Thanks Whittney. Good luck. It will look great.
You saved me $250. I have the same handles as this video but 96mm. This worked great folks! $15 !!!!
How did the finish hold up?
Over 1000s of videos, I too bought a sprayer today lol. If not for your video I would have done everything you guys did lol
(You whispering) Lollllll!!! Those handles look nice 😁
I know you men don't care much about aesthetics, but those gold handles do look very attractive on the white cabinets. S gorgeous! Think of it as the bling on a gorgeous Mazzaratie. So wife is bang on!
This rub and buff would be great to freshen up the front door hardware.
Rub n buff
Nice
LOVE the fishsandals lol
I’m going to try the rub n buff on my kitchen handles 😂.. we were going to use the same rustoleum that you used but now I want to try the ol’ rub n buff.. I just have a question..
Did you clear coat or anything after you buffed them? Or did you just rub n buff and let it dry?
How did you waterproof / seal the rub ‘n buff wax though? My friend used it on pulls and it lasted perhaps 3 months before coming off almost completely.
too funny. I will have to check out that rub and tug, buff, what ever it is.
What about a one year update? 👀👀
Awesome video. I never heard of this before. I’m going to try it. Did you have to spray your door handles with a sealant after ?
they looked fine silver. Rub and buff is gonna wear.
So obviously I'm here because I made the same mistake with painting my handles with that exact same rustoleum color even, but I subscribed because those fish flops rule and I also own a pair.
obviously you’re rad! Fish flops or die. 😂
Omg you are hilarious. Thanks for sharing your mistakes so we all learn from it.
I cannot wait for the update. I’m about to do my cabinets and am wondering if I should get a sprayer or use a roller. Yours look phenomenal!!
Spray.. I tried both. Rustoleum 2X in a can works great! I did spray on a gray primer first. Because my cabinet color was black..
i love this video. After the first minute I had to take a look at your page. I knew you guys were Canadian!! hahah i know my peoples "accent". Secondly i am on my company computer watching this video and was SO nervous to google Rub n' buff for fear of what might pop up. Phew, dodged a bullet. It was legit lol
Lolololol! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed eh. ✌️
Lolololol! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed eh. ✌️
How do you keep it from coming off on your hands when you touch the surface later?
How did the rub n buff finish end up holding up?
Dont you need to prime before spray painting? Probs why it failed. This rub n buff, does it come off when cleaned?
You can actually buy a decent paint sprayer for $50 on amazon which costs less than renting a sprayer from Home Depot. That’s what we used for ours and it worked out well.
Love your content!!! Definitely subbed.
Nice video, you sound like you are from the Ottawa Valley.
What I did was used grey auto primer first then the spray paint
Let me allow myself to be another pain in the ass. The original color of the handles looked a lot (like A LOT) better. Common Sense Tip: don’t always listen to us. You’re welcome. Hysterical videos. Love the honesty.
Now that its been a year, how has the rub n buff held up?
Great content and you’re hilarious. Unfortunately I made the same mistake and so I stumbled across your video. Did you have to sand the handles you previously painted or did you rub right over?
Thanks Coach! I did a half-assed job of just scuffing them up with a piece of sandpaper by hand. Nothing serious. I’m not sure if it helped or not but thought it might loosen up any stubborn grease on them.
Check out Amazon for the handles we got ours for like $2 a piece, at our local supply store the same ones were $7.
hey there! How did the rub and buff hold up? I was thinking about using it on my fridge handles. I had the same issue as you did with the spray paint on metal handles turning to shit. Sure is a shame as it was easy peasy. Oh well, like you I'm trying to learn from my mistakes. I appreciate your honest review and tips!
Did you sealed them with anything or just rubbed the wax and left it alone?
I finally have nerve to do my cupboards 🇨🇦 you guys are to funny not watch lol🇨🇦♥️
Let me know how it goes!
I should have asked a couple weeks ago when I decided to order some because today is the day I apply it. On a new metal lockset, would you recommend sanding first??
Let's go! If it was me I would most definitely hit it with some steel wool at least.
How many tubes did you use to how many handles?
Hahaha I have the same sandals. Not at all comfortable, but worth it for the expressions!
Too funny. Not gonna win any medals at the track meet!
You had me At everything your wife said 😆
Hey, how did the rub and buff hold up? I’m thinking about using on the brass at the bottom of the bathroom mirror.
Bathroom mirror would be no problem. Some of the higher contact areas showed some ware but on a mirror should hold up perfectly
Silver matches the wall
How many tubes would I need for 12 handles?
This is great help! I have silver handles just like yours and want to change to gold. I've watched a couple other videos with rub-n-buff now, and many suggest painting black first and then rubbing on the gold. I wonder if you think that having spray painted them first helped the rub-n-buff grab better? Thanks!
Thanks Robyn. It’s possible that the paint helped. Sanding them a bit to rough up the surface would be ideal.
Did you put a protective cover coat on top of the rub and buff ?
Negative. Just as-is
How is it wearing???
How would you rate the durability of rub n buff on those handles? Does it stain or wash off with usage?
After a couple months now I would rate the durability 7.5 out of 10. It works better than I thought it would but it’s certainly not indestructible. It doesn’t stain but gets slightly worn on the heavy usage areas.
I’m looking forward to going to the craft store asking for Rub n Tug. 😂 Does it hold up cleansers? The black lower cabinets are going to look great.
LOL...it seems very durable so far. Been using them for a few weeks now.
Get the clear plastic make yourself a paint booth and buy the zipper that you can add to the plastic to get in and out of your makeshift paint booth if need be
These look good man. I'm curious to see how your bottom cabinets come out from spraying them. I just posted a long ass comment on your other video where you painted the upper cabinets.
And when you say long-ass comment, what you really mean is a novel that is meant to be read on a beach! LOLOLOL It's funny because basically everything in that comment is the stuff that people are looking for answers for. The videos that are sponsored by the big box stores skip 1000 steps and don't answer what to do when you have a gap over the cabinets. How hard it is to get a sprayer dialed in. Controlling dust! All the time for drying and sanding and blah blah blah. I'm dreading spraying the lowers but I'm gonna do it just to satisfy all the commenters who are saying "just get a sprayer" Another REAL LIFE video coming in hot!
@@RinkVideo haha. My motto is why respond with only 5 to 10 words when you can just as easily type out 500 words. 😂
I can’t wait to see your video on spraying. The guy that specializes in spraying cabinets (yea the one that wouldn’t take the basically blank check to help me out) told me you want a fine tip which of course means buying an upper end sprayer. You might actually check with either the big box stores or even a paint store and see if they rent out a sprayer. Wish I could be there to see how it turns out for you (grabs a beer, pulls up a chair and lights a smoke) 👍
How’s the rub b buff holding up? I just did a protective coat of varathane.. and I’m thinking it might have been a mistake 😅. Time will tell, but would love to know how yours are holding up.
The busiest handles are showing some weakness! Starting to wear off a bit. The least commonly used handles are fine though. I’d do a better job sanding next time.
