  • Painting kitchen cabinets is an easy DIY for most people. But it's hard to find videos that aren't sponsored. In this video, we use a brush and roller to paint our cabinets. I explain what products we used and why, and what to expect as a result. This is the truth about painting cabinets and managing your tolerance for imperfections. The big question I answer is whether or not I think it's worth painting cabinets or not.
If you find any value in the effort made to make this video, all I ask is that you hit that subscribe button and drop a like on this video.
Here's a link to those mohair rollers I used: amzn.to/3oqp8Q3

I've painted lots of cabinets, and I appreciate your honest review. My cabinets don't look painted anymore because I've had 10 years of practice, read: messing up and getting better.
    Tips if interested:
    1. Use an oil based primer. My preference is Zinsser Bulls Eye 1.2.3. Use two coats of primer, lightly sanding between each one. Wear a mask. Fill in the gaps with caulk after the first coat of primer.
    2. The thing about Benjamin Moore's Advance paint that everyone loves is that once it cures, it's hard and won't budge easily, similar to an oil based paint. However, the thing that the sales reps never do a good job at, is telling people that the paint needs 24-36 hours to dry in between coats (which also means that amount of time for each side of the door). Most people don't want to be painting for several weeks, which is the time needed to truly paint well with that particular brand.
    3. The other thing is that that particular paint needs about a full week to fully cure before putting the doors back on. These are the things I've learned over the years. Just sharing in case anyone else wants to go that route.
    4. If you don't have that kind of time to wait, try Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint.
Also, I like the after better than the before, and I think you did a great job :-) But I agree that it's a LONG tedious task that I wouldn't tell most people to tackle unless they're super patient, and probably are gluttons for punishment.

A couple of tips for those interested
1: Use a high quality caulk where the panel meets the stiles and rails. Caulk will help significantly with any movement of the panel due to humidity or door assembly method. Paint in itself is not a filler material and BM Advance is especially not suited for that type of application as its leveling properties will work against you as the paint flows back out of the cracks and crevices.
2: You can use Mag Wheel Cleaner for degreasing if TSP or a heavy duty cleaner (Fantastik, Spray Nine etc.) isn't working. Use a scrubbing pad and plastic scrapers as your tools.
3: Stix is not a stain blocking primer like BIN, so if you sand/strip the existing sealer off and expose the bare wood then there is a chance that you'll get bleed stains from the tannins in the wood that will come through the paint in the future.
4: When spraying is not an option, I prefer using flock foam rollers to apply micro-coats although most short nap rollers will do a good job. Also, listen to your roller if you hear it making loud tearing sounds when rolling, chances are you're going to have a lot of stippling aka orange peeling. Just move quickly and don't overpaint.
Good job on the video and you did a nice job. I've seen far worse from paid professionals. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your next project.

Thanks for the info! Do you have any paint line suggestions other than Advance? I painted our bathroom cabinets (old school double cathedral, trying not to waste anything) with Advance and found it impossible to evenly cover all of the detail even after two coats of primer.

I do think it's a great product and I really only use Benjamin Moore paints. Would Regal Select hold up in a kitchen??

    • @choppedchamp8757
      @choppedchamp8757 3 роки тому +12

@@chellestan Both my painter and I use BM Advance for cabinetry all the time. It's a fine high quality paint and it levels off exceptionally well, but it's not "self leveling" such as self leveling mortars that are engineered to find a specific center of gravity. Paint cannot do that as it is applied to vertical and off angles versus a mortar which is primarily installed on horizontal surfaces. I personally like to use flock foam rollers and apply 3 - 4 micro coats which gives me a near spray like finish on my personal projects. My painter does 2 coats on the job, but this is mostly due to time and business constraints. I lay off in the same direction at a very low angle and do not apply pressure to the roller itself on the final pass. A high quality brush is also recommended, softer polyester bristles will generally leave less brush marks, but I myself prefer using a stiffer Chinex brush (Corona Excalibur or Ryan). As far as alternative paints I love Farrow & Ball for both cabinetry and trim, but that's a whole different price point. SW Pro Classic is also available in a waterborne acrylic alkyd (it also comes in the original latex , so you have to ask for the alkyd) which has a far less recoat time then BM Advance (16 hrs) and is a fine paint paint as well, but you might want to check pricing as SW costs almost what I can buy F&B in my area. As far as your coverage issue is concerened I'd change primers, Zinsser BIN is pretty much the go to primer as it offers both bonding and stain blocking properties while drying ultra fast. It does have a strong odor being shellac based, but since it dries quickly the smell disappears quickly as well. It's a bit runny so most painters prefer to spray it on when possible, but a short nap roller and good brush work just as well. It also sands easily when it dries although clean up is a mess (denatured alcohol or ammonia), but generally covers in 1 coat. Stix is great for things like PVC, but it offers no stain blocking so you'll end up with some coverage issues in certain situations unless you use another primer for a 2nd primer coat which adds time and cost to the project. Hope this helps you out.

Try using CabinetCoat - It's an Insl-x product (Benjamin Moore). My wife can destroy cast iron and it has survived two years of her thus far with no failures - even tomato sauce thrown from a blender wiped right off. It doesn't have the sticky "click" of latex and flows out beautifully. I used Advance in less abused spaces (guest baths and laundry) with good results.
Another "tip" is to use a spray primer. I use Sherwin-Williams Pro Block in rattle cans. It's expensive, but it goes on like butter, sands extremely smooth, and doesn't fight with the BM paints. I would be willing to bet that most of the defects in your paint are the result of primer marks telegraphing through the Advance. The Stix doesn't flow (which is why I don't use it - it's a "what you see is what you get" paint vs. the Advance which continues to "creep".
By the way, Advance and Cabinetcoat continue to flow out for several weeks after you finish painting. It's the beauty of oil paint.

Great video. I'm a professional painter and I have to say you did well. I love using Advance, it is a tricky paint to work with though. The reason I love using it for cabinets is because it's has a hardener in it for durability.
Here is how I would have done the work. When sanding I use a sponge and only sand in the direction of the grain. Next, I would paint one coat of primer. Once dry, gentle sand again. The use caulk to fill the panel cracks. The apply one more thin coat of primer. Once that is dry, sand gently then I would paint two to three light coats with the Advance.
Unlike your choice, I paint the back of the cabinet doors first, then flip to do the outside.
The key when hand painting cabinets is to realize it's a long process. Using multiple thin coats of primer and paint will give a better finish.
Btw, from what I was able to see from the video it seems like you received a fairly decent price for someone to do the work for you.
    Well done!!

I painted all my bathroom vanities using that combo of products (Stix, Advance, Mohawk hair roll, Silver tip brush) and had pretty good results. I took my time, first I cleaned them with TSP, then applied a deglosser as they were finished in that 90s oak finish, then light sanded everything. Filled any holes with wood filler and sanded again. Vacuumed and then used a tack cloth to make sure no dust was left behind. I did 2 coats of Stix, then 2 coats of Advance (1 day per coat, especially on Advance, you can't rush it, it needs 16 hours between coats). I feel like it self leveled really well - but not as smooth as being sprayed on. That was 2 to 3 years ago and vanities are all still perfect. My wife wants me to do the kitchen but I told her that's a lot of cabinets and if I decide to do it, I'll have to buy a sprayer. There's no way I'm brushing/rolling all those cabinets.

Here's the problem. People don't see the close up of quality work. They see the far away look of a DIY or HGTV job. Brushing and rolling will 100% give you a painted look. Even with good enamel paint. Most people don't understand that the doors must be off ground, must be sprayed, and must be sanded between each coat. This is how the smooth finished desired quality happens. It is a very surgical and precise process of prep, knowledge of tools and quality products to achieve a high quality cabinet REFINISHING job. I absolutly love this video because it shows the truth and how this trend of DIY cabinet painting has lowered the expectation on price and risen the expectation in quality. The point of this video should read to the viewer that it is NOT worth it to paint your cabinets yourself and that you SHOULD HIRE a professional cabinet painting company. If they know what they are doing, 3k to 5k for quality cabinet refinishing is still a savings when compared to a 10k to 30k cabinet demo and reinstall new. All in all this was an awesome video and I commend your effort sir. You did this job the same way I did my very first cabinet painting job and it was a nightmare!! We are now fine tuned.

As a professional painter this really shows how much work it takes to paint a cabinet and even a professional might have issues getting it as perfect as what most people think it will look like they're still going to be a lot of imperfections. The sticks primer also I have a lot of experience in it doesn't cover which you mentioned later in the video like it's paint it's going to be translucent because there's no real pigment into it additionally it doesn't cover Grease it's not a stain blocker for areas are very troublesome I would take denatured alcohol and clean those troublesome grease areas with that that's what we use. you could also use a lacquer base primer like bin primer and that would cover after you sprayed or rolled the sticks primer. One biggest mistakes with rolling on self-leveling paint is rolling the paint too much so you want to just get the paint on there roll it real quick let it dry do not add a second coat that day the back rolling would make it stipple and you would get that rolling effect these are things that are very hard to deal with and you know we roll the cabinets ourselves sometimes customers don't want spraying inside of that kitchen so we would have to hand paint the cabinet boxes so we use sticks primer and we use the same brand paint cabinet coat and we'll roll those we've had very good experience with that paint and it's cheaper if I understand then the advance

That way you don't have to roll them and at least the doors look a lot better. If you're able to use painters squares give them a try as well if not paint both backsides first then flip them over but I should be much faster that way before painting The Doors I had some water to the paint if it's a water base paint mix it and then spray and see how how it flows out don't add too much just try a little by little and see what you like

I'm with the wife... they look much better and it really brightened the kitchen up! I think spraying instead of brushing on paint would have resulted in a better finish... and you could still do that. I hope this doesn't turn people off from Benjamin Moore paint, as it really is great stuff and the go-to paint in the design world from what I see. Paint will never correct an imperfect underlayment, and the more glossy the paint, the more the imperfections from underneath will show. We were going to have all white cabinets, but I think we will end up going with wood bottom and white top cabs. You saved a ton of money doing it yourself and she appreciates your efforts! Win, win!

I just subscribed because I appreciate your honesty and humor! I think that your cabinets look great! Truly! I am sitting here in the middle of my kitchen staring at my cabinet situation on day 3 of our DIY kitchen remodel. My son is off school for a week for February break and he is helping me repaint the kitchen cabinets. It is NOT fun. We have sanded and cleaned and are ready to paint today. I am so glad I stumbled across this video and your channel. I have laughed out loud and honestly just feel better about the project. I am beginning the painting today knowing that I will feel less disappointed if they don't look professional. In my head, I picture perfection. I just lowered the bar and I thank you for it. BUT.....I truly think your cabinets look amazing!!!!!!! I think we who paint will always notice the imperfections. Thank you so much!

Finally, a completely honest video on painting kitchen cabinets. I did this exact same thing to my kitchen cabinets in 2018. My cabinets were a similar color to yours...maybe a bit more Caramel color. I have 9' ceilings in my home but the builder installed 36" uppers in the kitchen which left a big gap from the top of the cabinet to the ceiling which is a major dust collector. I'm on Pinterest and I saw where people were building open cubes on top of their uppers to take them to the ceiling. I really liked the look of enclosing that (no doors). I knew there would be no way I could match the stain on my maple cabinets but that was ok as I wanted white cabinets anyway. I spent hours over days, weeks and months doing research (I'm very analytical). I tried to think of all contingencies before I even attempted this. I figured I could possibly do the entire project for maybe $300 to $500. (HAHAHAHAHAHA). I had to buy a circular saw, table saw, etc to build the boxes. I tried to match the lines of the existing cabinets the best I could as far as the frame goes. I went down to my local Sherwin Williams store to get paint and supplies. They too have a "self leveling" paint. I walked out of there after spending $500. I had one mishap after another happen while working on this. All the research I did advised to scuff up the doors and I was told that even by Sherwin Williams. I applied 2 coats of good primer and commenced to painting. I could see the brush and roller marks under the paint from the primer. I took one door into Sherwin Williams to show them what this expensive primer and paint was doing. I sanded out the brush strokes the best I could and tried again. More of the same. Then I thought I would try my hand at spraying them. I went and bought a $200 sprayer. What a friggin hot mess I had. The sprayer was spitting paint all over the doors. I about cried (seriously!). By this time I had already spent hours over days and weeks. I thought to myself...what on earth have I gotten myself into? I got on Yelp and started looking for kitchen cabinet painters. Everyone was busy and not accepting any new jobs. I did manage to get ahold of one dude that does nothing but spray cabinets. He was nice enough to come to my house and look at my project but he doesn't work in my city. He looked around and said oh myyyy (he actually said something else but I'm keeping this clean). He told me I would have to sand the doors down to bare wood to get rid of the paint splatters and the brush strokes. I was desperate and I basically offered him a blank check to do my project. He declined. I went and bought a sander and started with course paper and worked my way down. I sanded for hours each day over many days. It wasn't until I was done and went to hang the doors back up that I found that I had done so much sanding that some of the doors warped. I got to the point where I was ready to attempt to primer and paint again. I worked on each door in the kitchen and had drying racks set up in the garage. After everything I went through, on two different occasions I found that the gardeners had blown shit in from the closed garage door all over fresh paint. Again, I damn near cried. I finally got the project done and it looks "ok". Same results that you got on yours in this video. Long story short (yea I know...too late for that) I would NOT recommend painting kitchen cabinets if you have nice cabinets...especially if you are in an upper end home. If you have an old home and the cabinets need to be replaced anyway but you can't afford new cabinets, by all means paint them. But I will tell you right now...the people doing YT videos and saying you can transform your kitchen in a weekend and it looks great...it's a flat out lie. My concern now is at the price point my home is could I ever sell it with these cabinets. Final cost...I can honestly say it would have been cheaper to buy nice RTA (ready to assemble) cabinets. Not saying it would include new counter top and sink but the cabinets themselves would have been cheaper to just buy nice white cabinets.

The crazy thing is you expect factory cabinets to be smooth and level, throw primer on and start the sand and you’ll see where your highs and lows are. It’s insane the difference! My OCD kicked in and now they’re a smooth as glass.
You didn’t sand in between? After your primer you should have went with 220-320 and lightly sand to get the imperfections out. I used 400 and 600 grit orbital sander after the primer and it’s like glass.
Also you shoulda used joint compound for the joint. Drys like concrete but easy to sand and manipulate.

The other DIY videos I've seen make it look like it's a simple weekend project with awesome results, but there must be a reason it is so damn expensive to have cabinets professionally painted. I also love that you pointed out the problem of hairs and dust getting into the paint. That's a huge challenge to overcome in a household. Who has an air tight squeaky clean garage with plenty of space to spread out cabinet doors as they dry? Your video has convinced me that this may be a project my laundry room cabinets, but not the kitchen cabinets. Subscribed and looking forward to your other videos!

Thank you for a totally honest review of this job! I recently painted some flat-panel laminated wardrobe cabinets with the Benjamin Moore Stix primer and cabinet coat paint, which is also supposed to be self-leveling. They did not come out good and the product is not the "miracle" paint they claim it to be. The cabinets were an ugly fake woodgrain before, now they are a streaky, ugly blue. My only hope to make them better is to take them off and try to spray them outside when the weather gets warmer. There is no way to get a perfectly even finish with a roller.

    Nice job!
Spraying the cabinet doors would have been just as much effort and would have given you a perfect finish. You did all the sanding and prep work already, spraying is easier than brush and roller. I picked up an electric HVLP gun and sprayed (shoe) cabinets and doors. Don't get me wrong, it took some time thinning the paint to the right consistency and getting the right volume of paint coming out the gun (not too heavy to cause drips and not too light to cause orange peel) but by the time I started painting the doors, the finish was perfect...and like you I'm super picky.
You can get a great gun on amazon for less than $150 CAN and use it on other projects (fences, etc.) in the future. If you're still not 100% happy with those doors, just lightly sand them and get two coats with a spray gun, they'll look perfect!

Earlier today I ran across a link to your stained concrete floors. I have now watched several of your videos and I must say I appreciate your wit, humor, honesty and timing. I am a huge fan of the unexpected - you definitely keep things interesting. I have viewed thousands of DIYD videos. In my wacky brain DIYD = Do It Yourself Disasters. (It could be DIYF = Fiascos but the former seems a bit less tragic.) Your honesty is much appreciated. I agree with your lovely partner - the white cabinets are fresh and brighten the space. If it was easy it wouldn't be so expensive to hire professionals to do it. Perfection is highly overrated. I guess that is why it's called Home Improvement in lieu of Home Perfection. (A former coworker bought a new home and hired a crew to paint the interior including vanities, cabinets, stairways, trim, library, etc. They horribly botched the job. Since the new homeowners were moving cross-country they were not on-site until after the painters departed. Paint was everywhere. The red oak floors had to be refinished, some tile floors had to be replaced since the finish was damaged removing blobs of spilled paint, etc. They never found the rowdy painters. They actually slept in the house for 2 weeks. They left a huge mess. They started a fire in the fireplace but the flue was not open. Nightmares for the new homeowners.) New Subscriber.

They.. nice honest video. I’m going through the same project(one week in so far). Man oh man.. it’s a lot of work. I see why it cost so much. I too went to the expensive paint shop(Sherwin William), picked up white primer and two cans of white paint all on sale for $290. I found a open box Wagner paint gun, which turned out to be crap. My cabinets are oak. I too stripped them down to bare wood.No matter how many coats of primer were applied, they still showed the grain with yellowing. I ended up using a product called kilts. We koffed up a little extra and got a proper paint gun from Lowe’s ($275). Not willing to take a chance with the white paint, we opted for five gallon of (grey)paint that was refused. I applied it last night. Oh boy oh boy. What a difference. I quickly learned how to use the spray gun. It looks fantastic with just the first coat. This may sound silly but, l need to learn how to post my project. Anyway, I’ll sand ant paint two more times. I hope this paint will hold up. By the way, where did yo get the iron on strip?

Our cabinets are 30 years old and pretty skanky. I might just replace them.

I'm very meticulous and patient. I've done cabinets and gotten awesome results. They helped move a house that had been on the market for 6 months to sellin

I am in the middle of painting our stained plywood cupboards. I am using Behr primer and paint. You’re right about the lack of hide-ability of the primer, but after two coats of paint, they turned out ok. In all fairness, I used a brush only on the doors and once they’ve been hung, will require a second coat to flatten the surface. I feel your pain. I have 36 doors, and 18 drawer fronts to do.

I used the same paint on my cabinets, but with a foam roller. I also painted on top of the kitchen island, in bright light. I was very happy with the results.
    I enjoyed watching your video.

I was told to add Floetrol Flow to the paint. It increases the dry time but it makes the paint self level a lot better than paint alone and not show brush marks as much. I made chalk paint for my cabinets which hid a lot of imperfections but I was painting fairly beat up cabinets so I didn’t expect them to be perfect. I think your kitchen looks nice.
