How to Spray Paint Cabinet Hardware Black

  • In this video, I show a step by step guide on how I refinished my kitchen handles. Painting them black is a really popular choice and ended up looking great on our white kitchen cabinets.
    For people looking at buying new cabinet handles they notice they are pretty expensive and this DIY project can save a few dollars.
    If you follow each step you can easily paint your kitchen hardware to make it last longer. Many people forget a few steps, like priming or the topcoat, which really reduces the longevity of the black paint.
    I hope you enjoy the video and don't forget to subscribe!

    I find that satin brand of lacquer makes a metallic finish flat. So I sprayed one more coat of the metallic paint on at the end - if it wears off it won't even be noticeable

    It looked like you didn't top coat on the underside of the handles. Is this because you didn't want to handle them while spraying the lacquer? It seems like it would add to the durability or is the top coat more for appearance?

    Hi Everyone, Is the premier necessary, given it's sand ed, and metal paint is used?

  • @Powercrizz
    @Powercrizz 2 роки тому

    What’s the purpose of the primer color being light gray when the handles will end up black? For the lacquer, what’s the purpose in using wood finish spray on these metal handles? Thank you! This video is helpful.

    • @FurnitureFlippa
      @FurnitureFlippa  2 роки тому +1

      primers are great because they often have stronger adhesion properties when compared to paint. The color grey is a good option under black paint because it won't be very noticeable, unlike a white primer would be super noticeable if you scuffed the surface.
      As for lacquer, it is a super durable finish when dry. It will protect the paint for years to come if layered 3-5 times.

    Hi. Is it okay if I don't finish it off with the lacquer clear coat and just leave it with paint?

    • @FurnitureFlippa
      @FurnitureFlippa  3 роки тому

      It will not last long without some sort of finish. If you aren't going to finish just do a few more coats. But paint is not as durable as most topcoats, keep that in mind.

    How long do you wait between primer, then black paint and lacquer?

    • @FurnitureFlippa
      @FurnitureFlippa  3 роки тому +2

      Usually an hour or so, product cans give recommendations but when it is dry to touch I will begin next coat.
      Lacquer dries in like 15 mins and lacquer coats mold into each other so time doesn't matter too much.

  • @bellatronm5875

    They turned out nice, but the Amazon links you provided add up to over $70. So unless you have 20+ handles, it's cheaper to get new hardware. There's a lot of similar-looking hardware on amazon, 10 pack for $25 range.

    • @FurnitureFlippa
      @FurnitureFlippa  4 роки тому +1

      Spray cans can be found on sale regularly, like right now each can is more than 50% off. That makes this project 22 dollars. I also had 29 handles in my kitchen, I would have had to spend at least a hundred dollars for our size handles, and that would be at the cheapest style. I don't think getting new hardware is always the best option if looking to save money. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

      @Furniture Flippa thank you!!!! I have another question, I wanted to follow your instructions perfectly but i have already gone to three stores and none of them carry the Rustoleum Universal Primer and paint in flat black. So do you think if I use the Rustoleum Flat Protective enamel and buy a separate Primer it could work just as well? I also had trouble finding the watco lacquer so Lowe’s recommended getting Krylon colormaxx clear satin crystal clear. Do you think that should have the same effect?

    • @FurnitureFlippa
      @FurnitureFlippa  4 роки тому +1

      @@TheEndRange You can always order the products online where you prefer, but for a top coat I would find a lacquer clear coat, the brand isn't super important just paint on multiple coats. The Rustoleum flat enamel should be ok, just spray light coats because I feel it will run streaky if you spray a lot on. Automotive primer or something similar will do the trick! Good luck! Feel free to let us know your results :)

    • @FurnitureFlippa

      Sara Wylie well it’s not required to use a primer if using a 2 in 1, but I wanted to use a product that is specifically designed to be the primer, not both. This helps the primer bond to the surface reducing chips in the paint. I haven’t had issues yet and it’s been about 6 months!
