Hey. It may work for a short term solution but I wouldn’t recommend as waterproof. You could try the same basic steps but switching out the topcoat for something with better waterproofing ratings if you want to test it out.
Does the door close as easy as before? I have done this to several doors but the latch part (in the strike plate) doesn't slide shut as well. Hi, great video. Just one question. Won't the door knobs be sticky after you paint them? Or does putting the clear primer on afterwards fix that? Thanks.
That’s up to you. There is a chance it won’t stick as well without it, but most spray paints claim to have a primer built into them. Cleaning well and a scuff sand will probably go a long way for you too.
2 Things; once you wash the hardware wouldn't you clean it even more with stuff like "Bar Keeper's Friend" or Brasso? Also I assume the paint&primer can should be enough, going to try 1 door without using that initial primer coat.
OldSchoolNoe you certainly can clean it with that if you want, I didn’t find the need. And you can do the paint & primer together. I don’t typically trust that type of product as a primer on a hard to stick surface, but it’s probably fine.
@@OriginallyWorn Spray painted the hinges and about 17 hours later I can scrape the paint off with my nail. I'll let it cure for another 31 hours. If it doesn't adhere I'll strip the paint and sand the hinges with P400 and use a primer before using the paint&primer.
Hey. They have worn off the most. The hinges are perfect. The strike plates have scratched quite a bit where it rugs and a few of the knobs have a few nicks.
@@OriginallyWorn take some 400 grit sandpaper and lightly go over the metal. Then primer. Sanding is the most important part to any paint project. It what makes the paint stick
Thank you for this video. I am attempting this on some door handles now! The products list a curing time of 48hrs. Do you let each of the 3 cure for 48hrs? Or just 48hrs at the end?
I tried to let each layer cure at least 12 hrs... sometimes I did longer, sometimes not. The longer you can wait the better. I don’t remember what I said in the video, but I would follow that as they turned out good. Haha I break my own advise often.
Mine have held up great! A few nicks here and there on the handle but overall once they cured they are good to go. Sanding won’t hurt at all. I chose not to, but you certainly could!
Ok, Here is my question. Does anyone have an answer? I got curtain rods, rings and finials. The rods came in black but the finials and rings are a pewter color. Do you think I can antique the poles using this method. Maybe spray a bit of silver on the black poles, use a sponge or cloth to dab and then do the top clear coat?
I sprayed my draw handles. Nearly all seem to have dried ok, although they never dried great. However I am having major problems with 2. They are not screwing back in properly and when holding them even slightly tight they get finger prints and all smudged and a mess. I completely cleaned off all of the paint with acetone and then gave them a wash after. I sprayed them making sure the create the thinnest layer possible and left them to dry for 2 weeks but I am still having this problem with them. Why are these 2 handles so impossible?! 😭
Hello. I am sorry you are having trouble. I have no idea why you are having such problem withs. I have spray painted many things and haven’t had such issues. Did you follow all the steps? Use the same paint? Do you clean them really well, and clean the acetone off? And let each layer cure well. Maybe try bringing them inside with each sprayed layer to make sure they cure. I’m sorry I can’t be of better help.
@@OriginallyWorn Yes they've all dried in well ventilated room and even in direct sunlight. I don't know what their problem is! No i used a different spray paint as we're in different countries. I just have no idea why these 2 handles hate being gold so much! 😭

No video follow up, just the info in the comments. It would be a short video ;) few nicks but overall good. Might replace knobs if I were to do it again, but paint everything else still.
Great tips but why dint you use Annie’s. I am about to do mine and that is what I thought I would try. Would like to know your thoughts before I do that
Cards Are My Canvas hey! You could certainly use Annie Sloan products. I have many times for furniture hardware. I like to dabble in all the stuff without really good reasoning. But I also like how the spray paint seems to make a black “shell” on the knobs. Like you can’t tell they are painted. They look purchased black, new.
So, you used a black primer as the topcoat. In other words, you did not actually apply paint, you simply stopped after applying the primer. So, I'm wondering why you did not take another step and actually apply paint.
No. You must have misunderstood. The black is a rustoleum spray paint that does contain an element of primer in it. So if anything you could have skipped the white priming steps, but I think prep work is important, so I do both.
Sorry, but done correctly they will. This video is from 2019 and mine held up just fine for a long time! I slowly replaced mine due to style change mostly.
@@bethh4271 why? cause you shouldn't paint over original materials like that. I just spent months stripping the paint off knobs and hinges from my new house (11 doors). Now I also have to figure out how to remove painted bricks around my fireplace. People are so dumb sometimes. You don't paint on metals or prick etc.etc. I mean, one can do anything one wants to do of course..... but it don't make right.
I disagree. If you want orig cheap gold doorknobs that aren’t worth keeping and you want to strip them back to original status, go for it. Most might agree that painting them updates a Hime.

Thanks for the tip! :)
Hi, great video. Just one question. Won't the door knobs be sticky after you paint them? Or does putting the clear primer on afterwards fix that? Thanks.
Hello! Thank you! The knobs are not sticky. If they are properly cured they will not be.
@@OriginallyWorn thank you
Do the hinges also...great look
We did :) thanks!
Hi! Would like to ask how I can paint the door hinges without removing them since spray painting inside the house is too risky health wise
Hey. I did remove all of mine to paint. If you didn’t want to do that you could try painting them with a chalk paint because that has high adhesion.
I've seen recommendations to use etching primer. I don't know if the bonding primer is the same thing.
Not sure either 😬
Do you need to use the bonding primer if your original color is a gloss black to get it to a matte/satin black?
Not sure if I missed it but what about the key hole? Just paint over and use the key to open it up after the fact?
Jo L these don’t have key holes, but yes, you could just paint over them lightly.
Very helpful
Thank you!
How have the strike plates held up? I'm curious if paint would be rubbing off there especially.
Did they were down at all I only used the spray paint on my garage nomb to test it out and it's all chipped off.
No. They look good. You need to clean them well and use primer. Sealer helps too.
@@OriginallyWorn I was thinking if doing this same thing to my bathroom faucet, and tub faucet, how do u think it would hold up in a wet environment?
@@kaylaperkins8309 I don’t think it would hold up for really long. But you never know. I have heard of people have success for it for a year or so.
Hi. I'm wondering how is this holding up? Do I not need to sand the handle?
Mine have held up great! A few nicks here and there on the handle but overall once they cured they are good to go. Sanding won’t hurt at all. I chose not to, but you certainly could!
THANKYOU.....VERY HELPFUL!
Tmesso thank you
So its the farmhouse black the same as the flat black???
Manuel Ramirez i imagine they are close, but I’m not sure. Farmhouse black may have a bit of brown to it... but I’m just guessing
I think that would totally work!
@@hanad1627 I’m so sorry you are having trouble! That really does suck. I think you did what was right and started back over again. I hope this time they behave! ❤️
How have these held up over the last 2 years?
Pretty good! I would recommend
It! A few got a few little knicks in the beginning but they haven’t budged in a long time.
What is the time frame between costs to dry and total dry time? Thank you
Depends on a variety of factors but I liked to leave 12 hours between coats. They can’t be sticky at all when you spray the next one.
Great info thanks!
Lucienne Henneberry thanks!
Can you paint bathroom faucets in this same way?
Carla Szczechowski technically you can, not sure how long it would last.
Just curious if there's been any paint thats rubbed off after 2 years?
A bit on the more used handles, but really overall not too bad.
It's been a few years, how is it holding up?
Pretty good! A few knicks and worn spots on the knobs. I would replace the strike plates if I were to do it again. Hinges are perfect. But definitely worth it to me.
How have these held up over time?
Pretty good. There are a few nicks on the knobs but everything else I did is still perfect.
I was just thinking about that too. Do you know if she made a follow up video?
No video follow up, just the info in the comments. It would be a short video ;) few nicks but overall good. Might replace knobs if I were to do it again, but paint everything else still.
How long is "curing for awhile"?
I would suggest 12- 24 hrs depending on temperature and humidity
Great tips but why dint you use Annie’s. I am about to do mine and that is what I thought I would try. Would like to know your thoughts before I do that
Cards Are My Canvas hey! You could certainly use Annie Sloan products. I have many times for furniture hardware. I like to dabble in all the stuff without really good reasoning. But I also like how the spray paint seems to make a black “shell” on the knobs. Like you can’t tell they are painted. They look purchased black, new.
Thanks for the quick response Rochelle! I think I will try the spray too! Fingers crossed it lasts!
Cards Are My Canvas I hope so too 🤪
Would this work on an outdoor front door?
Marjanne Descamps technically yes, but there are a lot easier ways to paint a front door :)
how did they wear over time ?
They held up great for a long time. We did this years ago and have started replacing the knobs slowly as they wear but the hinges are still perfect.
2 years… how is it holding up?
I am very pleased. A few knobs has some Knicks but really great overall
How long did you let each coat cure?
Andrea Hamblen 12-24 hours if I could stand it 🤪 probably more like 8 though.
How is it holding up a year later?
They have held up great. A few knicks or wear here or there sure. The strike plates are the worst looking. The hinges are perfect.
How did this hold up ?
Pretty good! The strike plates look the worse, the hinges are perfect and the door knobs are good for the most part.
Is it blog or vlog ?
It’s both. I have a blog and a UA-cam channel.
Like Barrio - Varrio 😄
those would look perfect golden like if were polished not painted lame black. it's more like rust-oleum commercial LOL.
How much $$$ were those 3 cans of spray paint?
Honestly I do not remember. Maybe $5 each, so $15.
@@OriginallyWorn OK, thanks for clarifying. I overlooked the fact that the black coating was a primer & paint product.
David DeRolph glad to help clarify :) hope you have a great day.

This will not last. Buy new door knobs.
Sorry, but done correctly they will. This video is from 2019 and mine held up just fine for a long time! I slowly replaced mine due to style change mostly.
TIP # ONE: Don't paint your door knobs, hinges, screws and such hardware.
Why
@@bethh4271 why? cause you shouldn't paint over original materials like that. I just spent months stripping the paint off knobs and hinges from my new house (11 doors). Now I also have to figure out how to remove painted bricks around my fireplace. People are so dumb sometimes. You don't paint on metals or prick etc.etc. I mean, one can do anything one wants to do of course..... but it don't make right.
I disagree. If you want orig cheap gold doorknobs that aren’t worth keeping and you want to strip them back to original status, go for it. Most might agree that painting them updates a Hime.
How have these held up over time?
Hello! The strike plates have scratches on them, the knobs have a few dings (but nothing major) and the hinges are still perfect. I would still do this again. :) hope that info helps you.
How’d it hold up?
Really good!
