    50 grit too rough you will never get rid of those sand scratches. The old paint isnt peeling so id just sand it smooth and call it prepped. If removing old paint was desired then chemical paint stripper is your best bet.
    If you must sand use your shop vac equipped with a dust bag. That sander will easily accept the hose and boomski dust extraction.

    I would have started sanding with a small belt sander and 120 grit paper then switched to a palm sander with 120 then moved up to 180 then 220. Much faster that way. At least set a box fan in the window to blow the dust outside. Even better is to attach your shop vac to your sander.

    Some good tips for dyers, all ill add is if you're young and spraying, if you touch that trigger you better have an actual respirator on if you want to dodge the risk of cancers at a young age, just cause you see Jeff over here winging it doesn't mean it's okay for you to also wing it and be as reckless as this. Jeff you're a mad lad for 22:30 lol, that sticky chemical overspray micro paint particles going right into your lungs. Well anyways, besides the health risks the end result looked like a great improvement, great job =)

  • @davekushman2363
    @davekushman2363 26 днів тому +1

    If you’re around the corner from Home Depot it is definitely more efficient to hold off on starting to sand for 15 minutes while you run out and get proper grit sand paper instead of wasting your time pushing through with 220 to tear through two layers of paint one of which likely being latex based

    • @davekushman2363
      @davekushman2363 26 днів тому +1

      Also never sand material directly beside wet paint or primer… that’s a simple one even a diy guy knows that, you’re kicking up dust and particulates and they’re falling in the wet paint now you have tonnes of floaters and spots that to get a professional finish you have to sand out or in your case, landlord special and paint over

    Painting the builder's cheap pressboard kitchen cabinets white to cover the ugly dark stain was my first major reno project. Primer was my friend, I used a sprayer on the doors. It looked good for a decade and a half. My budget was miniscule so I used $1 sq. ft. tile on the countertops. No one told me I could rent a wet saw so the tiles were cut with a breaker bar.

    Jeff, I absolutely love watching your videos! The worst part is, you make everything look easy, then I get ideas that are beyond my reach. 😂 Regarding this kitchen paint job, I would love to do something like this in my current kitchen, but dust & overspray would be an issue. Yours was obviously a complete kitchen renovation - did you tape off much or have issues with overspray? Other than for the videoing purpose, did you not need a face mask or was there not much spray blow back? Thanks so much! Keep up with the great videos!

  • @catsmeow5566
    @catsmeow5566 Місяць тому

    Tack cloth is good for removing the dust and waterproof shelf liner can help afterward.
    Maybe its just me, but I prefer the inside of the cabinets to be lighter so you can see inside more easily when looking for things.
    The hook thing to hang the doors up is interesting. Wish I'd thought of that for my vanity doors but they are old plywood. Another way to do it would be to have two hooks so the doors don't move around so much. I don't usually paint the insides of the doors so I'd probably use loops on the back and S hooks to hold it on the bar.
    I don't have strong fingers so a drill bit or screwdriver would be good for moving the hooks.
    I'll have to see if I can set up something like this in my workshop but I'd use regular spray paint as I don't have the fancy paint sprayer. I'd probably hang stuff a little bit higher up so I wouldn't have to bend as far to spray underneath- I don't bend well. LOL. I'd rather have to use a stepstool or ladder to paint the top than have to bend down.

    How long did it take you to finish the cabinets? And they look great. I've been painting for some years and what I've learned from older guys who have been painting for 20+ years is that I've seen people who are "professionals " take weeks to do a job like this and in the end the cabinets turned out to look the same.

    N0 -if you change colors by just shoving the pickup in the new can the paint ends up being a blend of the 2 colors. You end up with a paint job where the color is a gradient changing from the old color to the new. It can take 1/2 gallon to get all the old paint out. You'll end up with a different shade until all the old color is gone. Just clean the machine, or have your primer tinted to the finish color. Also, you really ought to wear a mask. Breathing aerosol paint, even latex, is dangerous. That is a stupid way to save a few dollars.

      This is Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane. If you were to use a sprayer, you would not want to switch the dirty intake into the paint like he did. Secondly you would want to use a much smaller spray tip than he used. He has spraying experience, which is probably the only reason he doesn’t have big runs.

If you want to spray without a respirator and inhale multitudes of chemicals that are not good for you go ahead and do it but if you purporting yourself as a teacher you should be teaching the correct thing I've been a painting contractor for 40 years oh my guys wear respirators I tell everybody that I interact with to wear a respirator Read the paint can and it'll tell you the same thing

    Jeff, completely off the subject. But tell your Camera man, this is an old trick I learned when I was a camera man for 2 years at a local tv station here in San Jose, Ca when i graduated from High school. Tell him to Zoom all the way in, focus the camera, then turn off the automatic focus, and he will never be out of focus again. Also, you should put your remote mic closer to your mouth, it's hard to hear you most of the time. Don, CA. 4-21-2024.

    I agree with a lot of the comments on this video. This is a pretty poor how to video, and there are plenty out there. I like a lot of Jeff’s videos but this one is a bit hard to get behind. Sanding after spraying primer…seems like he realized after the fact that he should’ve done this. Moving the intake from primer into emerald urethane without cleaning, and at the very least it should be flushed with water, but the proper way would be to clean it completely. Using a much too large spray tip, looked to be in the 500s, and not wearing a respirator when spraying, especially into a cabinet opening which ensures blowback. Why not spend a little extra time to teach viewers the correct way? Because he’s a smart guy and knows how. Not great on this one.
    I hadn’t even got to the door spraying before this comment. My god man. That might be the most awkward set up, not to mention the single hook, the drying right in the spray zone, and the height. Despite saying “plan it out to make things easy, it just makes sense,” nothing makes sense here.

      @@muzic4lyfe2005you do know Jeff started off his career as a painter right? The thing op doesn’t realize is yeah he cut some corners but that’s the whole point of this series. He’s renovating under a budget and under a time crunch. He’s showing people it’s okay to do some things and it’ll be alright in the end. He said that when he put the white primer filled pump in the green canister. Op didn’t listen clearly. This series isn’t really a how to step by step. It’s a showing the process to make some people more comfortable with the idea of doing something without a big budget
