Rescuing a flying-fox who was on the road: this is Leonie

  • Leonie is a young adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was noticed on the road by a motorist; he thought she was dead and the wind was flapping one of her wings, however he then noticed that she was trying to get off the road.
    He bundled her up in a jacket and popped her in the boot of his car and brought her home.
    When he arrived, he put her into a gardening bucket with a towel over her, left her in the boot with the boot cracked open, and called for help; what a great guy. And in all this he didn't get bitten or scratched YAY.
    When I arrived, she woke up and became a little cranky (!!!) Initially when I looked at her she was fighting me so I didn't see the fracture in her elbow until she turned around in the cage. Elbow fractures are the worst, and this was a particularly nasty fracture from which there is no coming back.
    I couldn't get an appointment for euthanasia for an hour so I took her home and offered her grapes on which she was quite happy to vent her rage and frustration.
    RIP Leonie, my young lionheart from Lyons Rd.
    I have put up video clips of her injury post mortem after the disclaimer; if you're squeamish, don't watch past my warning screen.
    Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

    Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
    If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
    IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
    The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  25 днів тому +1

      Yes, too bad, however she is too small to even visualise the injuries well - we can see the really obvious fracture but we can't see what's going on in the angle of the jaws if it's a soft tissue injury or a fracture and they're too small to be able to wire the jaw shut, which then leads to who will rehab her for the 3 months required to attempt to heal up this injury.

    I do wonder. Regardless of cost, hypothethically. Would it be possible to build a sanctuary for the batties who can't properly heal? Where instead of putting them down, they could live out their natural lives, albeit in some level of captivity, (One could argue to make a big area) I mean sure it would completely remove the wild, and make them domesticated, but one can't help but wonder.
    All I have ever done is take in wild fox kits, and helped them. Some, Sure, become unable to care for themselves, and so we take them to a protected area, where they live out their lives, digging, playing, etc. While the anatomy is different, I cannot say i know the least about batties. I can say, That, it's possible to give a fox or a dog, or even a cat a somewhat meaningful life. I wish more could be done for the poor ones.
    Bless their feisty souls.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  25 днів тому

      Sure it would be great to open a sanctuary for them, however you'd have to fight the governing body for wildlife (Parks and Wildlife) and then build it, then staff it; Leonie would never be able to fly, so someone would have to feed her and care for her along with the rest of the cripples. It's fine to have a sanctuary but if they can't fly (most of the reason for bats not being able to be released), then they need to be cared for for their lifetime.
      Expensive thing to do with a lot of roadblocks.
      There's no room for it in the city, so it would have to be where there is land out of town, and it would need paid staff and a manager. You're talking a lot of money.
      I'm busy rescuing the ones and getting them back to the wild if they can be released; I don't have the time or inclination to get a sanctuary up and going.
      I visit Tolga Bat Hospital every few years and I had great admiration for a lady who keeps a lot of unreleasables plus rehabs the releasable but it's more than a full-time job and requires a lot of money to run plus a volunteer base who are actually willing to be reliable.

      @childofcascadia 24 дні тому

      @averieaurelia6505
      Living without being able to fly and having a severely damaged wing is no way for a bat to live. It would be like being a human with no legs or arms and no mobility aids. This species cant walk with their legs on the ground.
      Sure, you can fix a straight break in a dog or cat. Not sure about bat wings tho.
      Joint breaks are something else entirely even in a domestic animal. If a limb is that badly mangled, often times amputation is the best outcome. But a quadriped like a fox, dog, or cat can go just fine on 3 legs. A bat cant function with no wing.
      One of the things you have to ask especially in wildlife rehab is "will this fix allow the animal to perform the behaviors of its kind, successfully find or catch food and avoid predators (if a prey animal)". If the answer is no, euth is the best outcome.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  24 дні тому

      Hi Cascade and Averie
      Tolga Bat Hospital has a lot of one winged flying-foxes where their wings were amputated for some reason. They can still climb around the aviary and they still have a social life (because there are probably around 100 bats in the aviary); they still get to have sex (lots of choice), and the girls can have babies.
      Bloddie (Blodwen) one of the old girls had her wing amputated when she was a baby (I don't remember why - before my time). She quite happily had a baby every year till her death around 22 years old.
      But you can't just buy a property and release crippled bats there and support feed them because they wouldn't be able to avoid aerial predators, so you're left with keeping them in a large flight cage.
      Check out Tolga Bat Hospital online and see the work they do; Jenny, who owns and runs it is a quite extraordinary woman, but it's a full time job (plus more) with lots of admin, lots of managing volunteers and having to deal with a homeful of live-in volunteers every spring and summer to cope with the influx of the Spectacled Flying-Fox babies who flood into care off tick-paralysed mums. She's been doing this for about 30 years now.

      @Megabattie
      Thats so cool. I guess I should have clarified my initial statement with "for release back to the wild".
      Im assuming the amputee aviary has lots of roosting bars and climbing wires so the amputees can make their way about? What happens if one falls? Does a human have to rescue them, or are they able to crawl back over to a wire wall or other thing they can make their way back up?
      And its good they have their social lives and lots of mates to pick from. I dont know much about bats compared to domestic animals, but I do know how important their colony and "bat social life" is to their well being.
      Definitely going to check out their online site. The bats where I live (in cascadia, obv), although awesome creatures and very environmentally important, they still look like the "squashed face mouse with wings". Theres nothing even close to megabat sized here.
      My friend has a colony of a species called "keens myotis" that lives in an old abandoned barn on his property. There were bat colonies in the area, and there was also some development going on nearby. My buddy was concerned because of all the development that the bats wouldnt have a home so made the barn a nice roost by boarding up the ground floor windows, attaching a sturdy door and providing exit and entry flight holes high up with overhangs, and roosting crossbeams. Basically made a "cave". There has been a little colony living there every summer for 10 years now. They dont overwinter, but they always show up about may and then leave in fall.
      Bats are such cool creatures. Id love to get more involved in rehabbing them.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  24 дні тому

      @@childofcascadia If a one winged bat falls in the aviary they would probably flap madly with the wing they had left, but they're no more likely to fall than any bat with only one thumb. They get around the aviary just fine; even no thumbed bats get around just fine though they may be able to fly. Bloddie had her wing amputated as a young pup (no idea why because I didn't ask), so she basically knew nothing else. She would have a baby who would hang off her side without a wing, precariously gripping onto her nipple with no wing to enclose it.
      There will be videos on my channel of my times at Tolga; I like going up there to fill in occasionally if it's not busy here. I fly up because it's 2500 kms away. I've been up quite a few times. There should be a Tolga playlist on my channel

    I wonder why does she have to be killed? Even if she can't fly again she could live in a sanctuary? Makes me sad because although they are screaming in pain, I feel like they are fighting to live. As if they know they will be euthanized.
