Rescuing a flying-fox tangled in netting: this is Mrs Winkie

  • Mrs Winkie is an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was noticed by some walkers, tangled in netting in the gutter beside a quiet road.
It makes my blood boil when I get this kind of rescue, because it means someone has cut them out of the netting in their tree and thrown them over the fence, expecting them to untangle themselves and fly off, or die without inconveniencing themselves.
All they have to do is to call wildlife rescue and someone will come and do this safely for the bat and the MOP, and most likely will offer them free netting to replace their crappy stuff.
This was worse than normal large aperture netting; this was monofilament netting, which I generally call slice and dice netting. The single fine strands of nylon fishing line thickness cut the bats membrane and mouth as they attempt to free themselves by biting on the netting.
There are still a few discount garden and hardware stores who sell this death netting and will continue to do so because it's cheap.
When I arrived, the poor girl was in the gutter, swathed in the netting with no hope of freeing herself. It took me 25 minutes to free her from the netting with scissors and hands with opposable thumbs; what chance did she have with just teeth and a mouth muzzled by netting.
The lovely MOPs (members of public) who found her, stayed and helped, and videoed for me when my video glasses, who had apparently been freelancing in my car, recording the ceiling view and other delights and flattening the battery, died a few minutes into the rescue. (That was quite a sentence wasn't it? Hope it makes sense)
For a while, Mrs Winkie was called Mrs Monumentally Cranky Pants, which isn't obvious in this video but comes to the fore in the next instalment of her time with me.
I was going to call her Winkurri, but one of the neighbours shortened it to Winkie which seemed to fit her well.
I have moved Mrs Winkie along to a carer along with Gertie, and I hear that while her wings are in the process of blistering and falling apart, she is doing better than expected.
I also hear that she's a sweet girl, passive and cooperative, which makes my heart glad that she's settled down and isn't so stressed.
Hang in their Mrs Winkie. If the world was the faintest bit fair you wouldn't be in this situation.
Update: Mrs Winkie is doing really well and is on track for release in the next release cycle. Her injuries are comparatively minimal considering the horrible netting and her entanglement.
She was saved by the thickness of the netting and that she didn't have single strand tight entanglements around her wing membrane.
    I love happy outcomes.

As much as my heart breaks for Mrs. Winkie, there's a wee bit of relief that an MOP was kind enough, caring enough to contact you, and stayed to do anything at all to help. It gives me a small hope that good people still try to offset the actions of thoughtless idiots.

So, here we are at the gates of Heaven. An admission angel finishes Meg's paperwork, says everything's in order, and hands her a bag with the standard halo, harp, and white feathered wings. Meg looks disappointed and says "I was hoping for black, membranous wings…" All the angels at the admission desk fall into silent shock, other people in line look nervous, but Saint Peter flys over and says "relax everyone, Meg's on the 'special angel' list" and hands her a bag with big bat wings, a floppy-ear monster hat, and a Gibson Les Paul (because why not?), then points her towards a cloud of bats looping and diving happily over a grove of fruit trees.

Those people that apparently must protect their fruit trees from the bats are so ill informed. There wouldn’t be any fruit trees anywhere if it wasn’t for the literal fruit bats who spread the seeds everywhere they fly. The animals are a blessing and so important for countless other wildlife that has food because of the precious bats.

I made the horrible mistake years ago of putting netting over my fig tree. No flying foxes here but a bird got caught and passed away by the time I found it. I threw the net away and decided if I never got another fig it would be okay as no animals would be harmed. I think I've had similar cut out times; there was one where the entanglement over his wrist was so tight I took him to the vet. He had fractures so he wasn't going to survive, so I chose to euthanase him at the vet rather than put him through the trauma of removing the entanglement at the site. It took me 10 minutes to cut it off his wrist after he was dead.

Amazing deft work you do to untangle her from all that netting! It's as though she flew into the center and pulled it down around while twisting to try and free herself. Boy did her eyes light up at the grapes, lol. She was pissed and so hungry. TY for taking such good care of these tiny teddies-💞

Well that has to be one of her longest netting rescues I've seen for a while and the most amount of netting, tangled everywhere😧 Lovely members of public asking questions etc and offering to hold the end of the netting so you could snip snip away. Mrs Winkie has to be one of the most cranky batties I have seen for a while. I do love the way they have their head under one end of the blanket whilst you are dealing with he over end, then suddenly the head appears somewhere you think it can't get to, almost they are saying with their eyes, AH HA!!! you thought you had got me BUT I AM BACK FOR MORE BITETY BITEY😂. Fingers crossed she can recover fully from the horrible netting injuries🤞Still can't understand these people who just cut the bat out of the netting then chuck it over the fence😡

Mrs. Winnie has the sweetest face, and I really felt sorry for her when the circulation started to come back…that is SO painful. I hate that netting with a passion, and I will NEVER understand how people can be so callous to a living creature as to cut them out of the net and just toss them with no care for their pain or survival. The MOPs were lovely and helpful, and I really enjoyed how they were rooting for the bat, who owes her survival to their having done the right thing and calling her in. I know how much you hate these netting cases, but you really do a good job with them. I’m glad she is going to make it, and has settled in care, when I saw how badly she was tangled I wasn’t sure she would survive this. It’s nice to know she is keeping company with your previous patient. 🥂🥂🖤🇨🇦

Have you ever tried a strap cutter? The US military uses them alot. The blade is deep inside a groove so it's difficult to cut yourself or others but easy to cut things like line, straps, netting.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  2 роки тому +2

As I said - the scissors I use are perfect for purpose.
I have tried shade cloth cutters and bandage scissors, but I need something to precision cut one strand of netting at a time as well as bulk netting, and these particular scissors are what I consider fit for purpose.
Bandage scissors will only cut think entanglements. Shade cloth cutters won't cut thick entanglements and need tension on the net in order to cut.
These little scissors do both thick and thin entanglements and precision cut, and are curved so for delicate areas I can angle the curves to cut away from the body.
