Rescuing 2 baby flying-foxes: Pianissimo & Bin Chicken

- The rescues are still happening daily, though they have slowed a little.
These 2 babies were rescued 24 hours apart.
Little Pianissimo is a female Black Flying-Fox pup who was on the ground about 100 metres from the colony; there was a female Black Flying-Fox female dead on the ground nearby, who may have been her mum but I didn't look closely enough other than to confirm she was dead.
Pianissimo is 2 weeks old, skinny and dehydrated; it was very very hot today and Blacks seem to suffer more from the heat than the lighter coloured Greys; black absorbs more heat. We were lucky the cool change came before the colony went down to heat stress.
Pianissimo's name came from my current cocktail theme (in a roundabout, Meg's brain kind of way). I was thinking on how beautifully black this girl is, and how her teeth were white and perfect little scimitars should she choose to wield them as such, and I thought of Ebony and Ivory, then I thought of piano keyboards... then I thought she was such a soft little girl, and so tentative, and I softened Piano to Pianissimo, which means soft. And yes, it's a cocktail as well.
Rescue 2:
Bin Chicken was found in a school playground. One of the teachers picked her up with gloves, and put her safely in a box until I arrived. It was reported that she was being "attacked" by ibises.
Ibises don't attack, in that their beaks are very long, blunt and curved but not weapons of attack. I suspect the ibises were checking out what was on the ground in their territory, investigating it for food value.
Little Bin Chicken was terrified, of course.
In Oz, the city ibises are known colloquially (with varying degrees of affection and exasperation) as Bin Chickens, for their urban foraging in the street and park bins (trash cans). Bin Chickens are treated as pests, which, in the city environment, they are.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Such an independent bat girl! That’s a lil fighter there to begin with. This is said with the upmost respect that Australian women of all kind will go full tilt til they die. So much admiration and respect to how y’all ladies kick as you say, “arse”. Indeed you do. Meg. You just blow my mind. I have so much respect for you.
Old ladies kick a lot of arse while they're still spry and active enough to do so.
Pianissimo (or Missie Pissy as we're actually calling her) will go to a new carer to buddy with another Black baby, in a few days.

Yes, and she's quite quiet and very soft at the moment; her adrenaline has worn off and she's not a happy girl, however she's a little better and more interactive tonight

Did Pianissimo try to do big wings at you? Cheeky little girl! But wee Bin Chicken literally made me say "awww!" (out loud!) in distress over her being so terribly skinny. My favorites have always been the foxes, but these two little girls may have converted me. They are gorgeous! Thanks MOPs for noticing them. Considering that she could fill her lungs and scream loudly at me, she's very quiet.

Another completely enjoyable round of Baby Bat Rescues, but it is sad to know they need to be rescued because they’ve been separated from their mothers. Thank God, they’ve got an angel of a woman in you!
Unfortunately the only way we get babies in care is if their mum can't look after them, has died, dropped them or unable to care for them... which is sad, but happens.

Wishing these two sweet little ones a quick recovery. You have your "bin chickens". We in the states have our "trash pandas" or raccoons.
I live in Chicago, IL USA and love Raccoons and Opossums which I see in the dusk & dark looking for food because they are hungry, bless them!🐾🥺💕💕💕

Poor Pianissimo and Bin Chicken! So very thin, so must not have been getting a lot of milk from Mummy before losing her 😢. I guess in this instance, it’s best fir them to be in care so they have a better chance of surviving as healthy batties into adulthood. It just breaks my heart seeing them so skinny and confused. I’m glad things are slowing down a bit for you, Meg. With all you have going on, you need a rest! ❤🦇❤️🦇❤️

Both of these wee girls are beautiful. It is awful that the heat is so high they get so dehydrated quickly. Pianissimo was fairly cooperative with not making you go for a net, and a talkative child, where Bin Chicken seemed quite out of it. Flat Teddy is holding up well over the years. The bats are really having a baby boom this year.🥂🥂🖤🇨🇦
Bin Chicken died today; it wasn't unexpected.
@@Megabattie I’m sad to hear that, but she really didn’t seem very present and alert…and she was skin and bone. I was thinking she had to have been off her Mum for a fair bit of time, or her Mum’s milk dried up for some reason.🌹🖤🇨🇦

There was a cool change last night which was an amazing blessing.

Blacks always come dressed to impress cute black suit with trousers 👖 included . 😅 they are the cutes of course . The gray come with wisdom already showing 😂the reds are just a notty bunch😅
Greys have little furry hobbit trousers down to their ankles; Blacks only wear furry knickerbockers

Last year a quiet year. This year very busy and many are so tiny. Every year is different? They are adorable.
This is an extraordinary year; the last crazy year like this was 2011 I think.
We had so many babies coming into care that we airlifted 15 babies to Victoria.

These babies are under 100 grams, they're tiny, have fallen and have been without their mums for an indeterminate length of time.
Many of them die. She was incredibly skinny. @@DSPsWifesBf

Pianissimo is a nice name but she's not very quiet, at least not yet. Bin Chicken is a great name. They really are very skinny. I think I asked you why the bats are all so skinny but not sure if you saw my question. I know scarce food is a problem but usually that's in winter.
For an outraged batty Pianissimo is very quiet; in care she's also very quiet and flat. I keep thinking she'll be dead next time I go to get her out of the incubator, however she's a lot more alert tonight.

I don't know, I think not.
I think she was a heat stress mumbat; it was over 40ºC yesterday, and the Blacks deal with heat less well, being black and absorbing more heat than Greys.
Mumbat wasn't close to powerlines but was close to the colony.
