Collecting a juvenile flying-fox dropped into a vet; this is Narnie Tootsie

  • Narnie Tootsie is a juvenile female around 18 weeks old, who was was found on the ground and dropped off to a (fortunately bat friendly) vet (the specialist practice where Adrian works as a locum. It may be a specialist dog and cat practice, however there are often vaccinated vets there and there are usually vaccinated vet nurses there.
The lovely vet nurse has made sure she's comfortable and has xrayed her to see if she has any major fractures, but our little Narnie Tootsie is largely unscathed except for a ding on her nose.
I know she's a survivor because she's 5 days into care now on uploading this video; survivors heal my soul.
Keep on keeping on Narnie Tootsie.
Her name story will come out during the videos.
She won't be hard released because she's too young, a bit skinny, and without her mum to shepherd her through the food shortage caused by teh wet weather.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospit...
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

I can watch your videos Meg all day long. Here in Illinois USA our bats are tiny and eat insects. Anything that eats bugs are our friend. I have a bat house and waiting for the city to trim some trees. Maybe they will put up my bat house.

      HI Judy
If you find out what bat species you have in your area, you will know what kind of box they like, and what sort of aspect they like (height and aspect - facing the sun or whatever your local bats prefer).
Bat World Sanctuary in Texas probably has info about various bats and preferences on their website, or email them and ask them.

So, when they are in the wild do they just wee and poo right on their moms?
Narnie tootsie shops! Thats amazing. Around here we call them "rich lady hobby shops". Like basically the implication is theres a rich lady whos bored and opens a shop just to have something to do but doesnt need or really care about the income.
Im glad to know shes doing good. After little Zondo we all needed to see a happy survivor.

    • @Megabattie

When they're really young (first week) they basically evacuate on their mums whenever they feel the urge, however the mums are usually fairly proactive and stimulate them to evacuate regularly and lick it all up (ick).
The babies in the wild are really fast learning to invert, and will often invert on mum and mum will kind of lean a bit so the baby pees down away from her face.

      Hi Deb
      Welcome to Megabattie, I'm Meg
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos.
The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too.

@@Megabattie Maybe I hears you wrong, I thought you mentioned giving it Pangesic, I had never heard of it, (US), so I looked it up, references I found lists it as containing Paracetamol and Tramadol. My apologies pharmacology and pharmacokinetics fascinates me, :)

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  2 місяці тому +1

@@brenthendricks8182 Nah, I can't check this video to see what I said in it; I'm on satellite internet where I am at the moment and if I check out videos they self load and use up all my hosts' data which is understandably not a good thing for them.
I upload the videos 5 or 20 kms away depending on where I am going and how the signal is.
I don't mention what I use because it opens a whole can of worms with other carers who disagree, or can't access this drug from their vet, or just don't think it's right for the bats (on no experience).
So basically I don't mention what I use but most people use Painstop which has paracetamol and codeine in it, or kids' paracetamol. Many carers have little access to any analgesics for their animals which is a tragedy.
This channel is not a HOW TO care for a bat channel; it's just bat rescue daily life from my point of view. In Australia the organisations are local or state wide (depending on teh state); all the regulations are different; all of us have to access local vet resources depending on the vets near us, and have to deal with the vet prejudices. It's a tricky can of worms and can turn into a minefield; I prefer to keep my head down and never advise what to do.
