  • Hey guys!
    So, I've had this idea in my notes for a while now and I decided to finally make the video. There are many intricate parts to the game of baseball that are fascinating to me. One of those things is pitch framing. I think it's an art form, along with defensive catching. And who is the best defensive catcher in the league today? Austin Hedges. So, today I look at Hedges' dominance behind the plate and the effectiveness of pitch framing. I hope you guys enjoy and make sure you're washing your hands!

    I always wait for Hedges star rating on OOTP to dip and then trade for him. You can’t beat two 75 ability catchers boosting those ERA stats

      A Catcher's equipment: shin guards, mask, chest protector, mitt, and cup are called collectively "The Tools of Ignorance" because the more ignorant a catcher is the more effective he will be as a catcher.
      Every catcher that has ever been born thinks they are a better pitcher than every pitcher who ever was born.
      A catcher's primary jobs are to tell the fielders how many outs there are, tell the fielders where they are to throw a fielded ground ball (in other words to call the defensive play), make sure the outfielders are properly positioned, and to enforce discipline on the defense.
      A catcher does NOT: call the pitches, or catch pop-ups in fair territory. A catcher chooses which infielder will catch a pop-up around home plate. He does not catch a pop-up if another player can possibly catch it. (Pitchers do not catch pop-ups either.) Infielders catch pop-ups.
      As far as being a catcher: when I was 5 years old my father bought me a catcher's mitt for christmas because, as a former professional pitcher, he liked to work off tension after work by throwing 90 mph fastballs at a 5 year old kid.
      I distinctly remember the first pitch he threw to me. He stood me in front of a granite wall and told me he was going to throw the ball and he wanted me to catch it with my brand new mitt. His pitch went past my head on the right and as I turned toward it, it ricocheted off the stone wall and zinged back past my head on the left. I almost died of fright.
      My last year in baseball I was 57 years old and an American Legion pitching coach who warmed up every pitcher on my staff every day. I had spent every day every summer for the final six years of my baseball life blocking 85 mph fastballs with my testicles and pissing blood.
      Do you still want to be a catcher? I think the ignorance part comes before one puts on the Tools! Are you ignorant enough?

    Padres fans have such shit comments on social media about his hitting, but dont realize how much better he makes pitchers and knows the staff. he is the definition of a catcher. he is not a dh behind the plate, but the mind of our defense and the man who develops young pitchers.

    • @richardtherichard26
      @richardtherichard26 3 роки тому +2

      A lot of people also don’t realize how unimportant hitting is for a catcher. In the past 40 years only 4 men who have won AL silver sluggers at catcher have hit over .300 over an entire season (mike Stanley, pudge (6x) Jorge posada and joe mauer (5x)) it’s not necessary to hit the lights out as a backstop, just do exactly what hedges does, make your staff better players simply by being there behind the plate.

    I’m a fan of classic strategy. IMO, it’s a bad idea to distance the classic fans in favor of “streamlining” or dumbing down the game in order to bring in more basic fans. I just think you’ll see many more offensive and good arm strength catchers and less Austin Hedges. But then again, I also don’t like the 3 batter minimum rule.

    • @SportStorm23

      Game Cuber that’s tough. Hedges is a leader behind the plate and pretty much makes any pitcher better, I’m not sure the same can be said for Sánchez. So if you can live with an offensive liability with the bottom of the lineup, I’d say use Hedges. If not, then use Sánchez.

    The art of “run reduction” wins games. There’s a reason Pitchers are labeled the #1 position and Catchers are labeled the #2 position. Neither position first focus is run production, but the teams with best Pitchers & Catchers win more

    If robo umps come into the game were going to have a couple years of really weird baseball where the catchers are good at framing but they're still going to struggle or where going to have a lot more of offensive power hitters like Vladimir Guerrero jr. Behind the plate so they can pump out guys at second and also hit nukes. It will change the game that's for sure and definitely not in a way I want it to.
