      It's not that complicated .. Let the runner have the outside of the 3rd base line until the ball is contained.. and the catcher has inside the 3rd base line. Teach the catchers to plant their foot along the front edge of home plate.. similar to the way most 1st basemen push their foot against the side of the bag- this would eliminate most problems. Catcher was BS'ing with all the "blah blah confusing 100 years blah blah" .. it's his job to know home plate rules.. fine deserved.

    This exact thing happened to Gary Sanchez earlier this year. In the replay you can see him look down before the ball gets there to explicitly check where his feet were and even move his left foot into the fair territory, so he could receive the ball cleanly. Then he moved in front of the plate (with possession of the ball) to block and somehow the player was called safe, when the twins asked for a review the NY office AGREED it was a violation. He literally did the textbook thing they asked and then punished him for it. These rules need to be spelled out and enforced properly. Otherwise it’s no different that an Ump calling balls and strikes. Even though this example includes replay, people still manage to fuck it up royally.

      @@Cristalack Calling the runner safe was supposed to be a punitive measure against a catcher standing directly in front of the plate, which is what they used to do and what Hedges isn't doing here. Saying he's trying to injure the runner is a bad read of the situation. He's just trying to be in position to quickly block the plate once he has the ball.
      The main intention of the rule was to eliminate the head-on collisions. But what this rule now effectively rewards a bad send by the third base coach. These plays are beating the runner, but the runner is getting rewarded because the catcher's technique is now extremely limited. This simply isn't a safety issue anymore.

    If the MLB really wants to prevent collisions at home plate, then why don't they just implement the same obstruction rule that applies to the other bases? If the goal is really player safety, then they should want to avoid collisions whether or not the catcher has possession of the ball. This would also be a lot less confusing for everyone.
    Then again, I'm not baseball expert. Is there any reason why they can't treat home plate like any other base?

    • @rapple37
      @rapple37 2 роки тому +85

      Yes, the reason is that home can be overrun by the runner, and is not a force out like at first. Every other base the fielder is not interfering on a tag play if they are straddling the base or behind it because the runner is stopping at the base. Home and first base the runner can run straight through, so the fielder is still blocking the path if they are over or behind the base. But at first base it is always a force out, so the fielder never has to move from out of the path to into the path to make a tag. You can try to apply the same rules as every other base, but it really is a unique situation.

    As an unintended consequence of the enforcement of this rule I could see catchers aligning themselves behind the plate, so as to allow a clear path for the runner. With this positional change, when the catcher has received the ball they would then essentially dive forward to THEN block the plate, leading to headfirst sliding runners receiving mashed fingers and gnarled wrists.

    The rule that a player cant block the plate without the ball wasn't really the part that was meant to protect them. The rule says a runner cannot deviate from his direct path to initiate contact. MLB explains the rule as such "Runners are considered to be in violation of this rule if they collide with the catcher in cases where a slide could have been used to avoid the collision." logically you cant tell the runner he must slide into the plate without also requiring the catcher leave a path to the plate open.

He's stuck his leg out there and knew exactly why he did it and it was the difference between an out and safe. If that is all the catcher said then he should not be fined. Have not heard of an umpire or referee being fined for making the wrong call in pivotal points or ejections or technical fouls because an opposing coach disagreed with a call and the referee ego says how dare you question my judgment. If that umpire was wrong and did not like being called out on it shouldn't they be fine d. I think a key point is that when throws are coming from the left side of the field, as in Hedges' case, it is much more difficult to make a play on those throws without "blocking the lane" as it is in the other examples in this vid, where the throw is coming from right. The rule says it's okay to block the lane "if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in order to field a throw, and the Umpire determines that the catcher could not have fielded the ball without blocking the pathway of the runner". The officials in New York appear to be saying I don't care if you're squaring up properly to the throw (Hedges at 1:24), you gotta take that half step over the right to get out of the way because you "could" field the throw from over there. You're at risk of making an error on any ball tailing to your left or not blocking a short hop throw with your body, but tough luck, because a decade ago a runner decided ignore a lane that Buster Posey gave and just plowed into him instead.

If the throw is errant, and the catcher HAS to move his body or appendages to where they're INADVERTENTLY blocking the plate, then that's a judgement call by the umpire. This catcher was set up waiting for the throw, with his leg INTENTIONALLY blocking the plate, causing the sliding runner to NOT be able to go straight into the plate- that's dangerous for a runner, especially sliding head first, where he could break a finger, sprain/break a wrist and do the same to his hand.

    If the league wants to define a specific area that catchers are NOT allowed to enter until they have the ball, then they need to paint clear lines to designate where the catcher can and cannot stand during a play at the plate. It's asking too much of catchers to be able to field a ball and at the same time, look at the runner coming from 3rd to see what baseline they've "established" and then give them a lane that matches their chosen trajectory.

      Replay of Kwan's stolen base later in the game indicates you can now block any base EXCEPT home. Home plate used to be a free for all collision zone. Now the rule has gone too far in the opposite way. All players want is equal enforcement at every base.

      @@heretolevitateme I gotta go with Pete on this. Been watching baseball since the late 70s as a boy and I can’t, despite whatever technical rule you may be alluding to, think of fielders blocking 1st, 2nd, or 3rd base with their bodies to prevent a runner from reaching the bag. I’m sure it’s happened, but it’s not how your coached to play the position the way catchers were.
      The only thing close to what they’re trying to remedy here that compares were runners sliding to take out the fielder at 2nd to break up the double play. The fielder wasn’t blocking the bag though, the runners intentionally aimed for contact. MLB ended that as well for similar reasons.

    • @ktbeatty
      @ktbeatty 2 роки тому

      @@emr5836 To some degree, sure. I agree. However, the way they do it is more to do with feel and positioning. They can’t look down or back while catching the incoming throw and tracking the baserunner. It’s not anything on the level of an entire leg or body completely preventing access to the bag. For the most part, they catch and swipe their glove to tag.
      There are exceptions to everything, for sure. However, baserunners are rarely tagged out because they had no access to the bag as it blocked by the fielder.

    Seems pretty clear to me, you see it at 5:29. Hedges' left leg cross the line and his foot is in front of the plate from the perspective of the runner before he gets the ball. There is still at that moment a chance that he'll miss the catch, but he's forcing the runner to go around and take a longer dive. The catcher shouldn't be allowed to stand in the lane for a catch he hasn't made yet.

    • @Kylora2112

      My perspective as well. You can't block the plate while you're waiting for a throw, just like every other base. You can *move* into the lane to field a throw or batted ball, but you can't just set up there. Hedges's leg 100% blocking the plate before he had possession of the ball.

      Agreed, I have always taught my catchers to set up with left foot on or near the front left corner of the plate when fielding a ball from the left side. This allows a path to the base that is a few inches farther from 3rd base while still allowing a a straight path to the plate itself. If they are going to enforce this rule, the third base ump should be the one calling it. If the ump can see any part of the rear portion of the plate while standing on the third base foul line, no obstruction.

    It's pretty simple - they want them to be on the mound-side of the plate, out of the 3rd base side and especially the batter's box. I don't understand what is so hard about this. Both teams have to do it so there is obviously not a decided advantage to any one team prior to first pitch. Rules change all the time; I feel like a professional catcher could make this adjustment pretty quickly.

      @TheLastWalenta I would like MLB help players out by clearly defining the acceptable positions and routes with an uninterrupted line all the way to home plate. The assertion to catchers would be clear: Without the ball, you cannot be on or past THIS line.

      @TheLastWalenta 2 роки тому

      @@johnstrawb3521 Excellent point. I think they have this already - it's the batter's box. Neither you nor I have access to what the players see in MLB-provided videos to help clarify this, but all the evidence we have from replay reviews, etc is that the line you are referring to is the batter's box. Without the ball, do not cross that line. But who knows? Maybe they didn't clarify that. In which case, coaches should be telling their catchers that such a line is the batter's box.

    This is one of the reasons I quit watching professional sports like Baseball, Football, and Basketball..... The officiating sucks, the players are overpaid crybabies, it costs an arm and a leg to go to a game, and the players can't seem to keep politics out of it..... I watch a real sport, Hockey.... they play the game, they don't whine and cry about contracts, and the only time you see one of them take a knee is after a hit.
