Completely agree with this vid. I once went into their catching facility for a tour but when I left I was a 1.3 defensive fwar player and now have to charge the batteries on my new right arm when I sleep
My buddy went a year or two ago, he still asks about some random Brewers fan named Sarah Connor every once in a while... Really weird, she must've left a lasting impression!
I just want to take the opportunity to say that the Murphy/Contreras deal still makes absolutely zero sense for the A's to have done and it eats me up inside every single day
by having the fortune of the Athletics valuing Ruiz significantly more than it seems like the general public/market did, and the Braves not having a piece Oakland valued as much, forcing Atlanta to run the trade through Milwaukee
They went from developing hitters like Braun, Fielder, Weeks, Lucroy among others to pitchers like Hader, Woodruff, Burnes, Williams. How about do both.. Together!
I lived 7 miles directly East of the Pitching Lab and I swear sometimes I saw groups of unmarked cars driving down Indian School Rd. Sometimes I saw baseballs in places you would not expect them. The lab is REAL I am not crazy.
Cards fan here, and I wish I could say the same about his brother. We know he can slug, but his 2023 numbers don't reflect that yet. He's very good at throwing out base stealers, but he was gifted a pitching staff and middle infielders that worked with Yadi. His framing and blocking still need improvement for him to become a decent backstop long-term.
@@JobiWan144Contreras has been a historically good blocking catcher and his framing is league average right now. He also has a couple of DRS. Overall, his defense has been a positive. He’s also not the catcher long term. He’ll catch this year and maybe next year, but Herrera is the long term catcher. They’ll platoon for a year and the Contreras will be the full-time DH with Herrera as the starting catcher.
Nah. He was already a really good defensive catcher. The framing was trending down but rebounded in Milwaukee but he went from 12 DRS to 0 in Milwaukee. We just got the last good framing year out of him but 2015-2017 he was an asbolute monster behind the plate.
Bailey I’m loving the humor you got going on lately. Real good stuff! Keep up the good work. I started with the baseball bits and I stayed for the foolish Bailey.
I am very glad to hear a shoutout for Baseball's Not Dead. One of the few truly quality baseball youtubers out there, along with "Look it's Baseball" who is new but awesome. Stark Raving Sports is quite good too. Now if we could also talk about how Baseball Doesnt Exist and Sportstorm are the big bang theory of baseball content- the lowest common denominator, pointless but appeals to dumb people who watch it because it doesn't make them think or challenge them to do anything except for see a thing they recognize and then start clapping- this would be truly justice done.
Honestly, this channel has the most consistent video quality on UA-cam. Refreshing to see when everyone else is just mass producing low density videos. Awesome work brother, keep it up.
Rumor has it that the j in j&l legal services (right next to Janet leathers on the map) is actually Jake Mathis Jeff's brother.... It was opened in 2017 when Jeff played for the dbacks.
So when can we finally get Manfred to investigate this? And which Brewers employee can we send to jail? Let's be honest. We already know some felonies are being commited in that lab. If it looks like a felony and catches like a felony... It's a felony. Should they just arrest the Brewers catching coach off the bat or go after Contreras and lean on him until he squeals for a plea bargain? We can't rest until at least one person pays the price for this.
@@timtebowsleftknee No... It's a lab. As in scientific laboratory. They are clearly cloning their own catchers and splicing their DNA with Johnny Bench. That's got to be illegal. Love the video but that building across the street has nothing to do with the Brewers. I was a catcher in the Brewers organization a few years ago and we never went over there. The gate around that facility is there because the spring training field is located in Maryvale which is not the best area. And the catchers in the Brewers organization are so good because of Charlie Greene. That man is a genius.
fun thing about players completely turning around their defensive profile: JD Davis currently has a 99th percentile OAA at 3rd base. I am not joking. also Joey Bart is on the blocks above average top list from this year and the low list from last year. Giants Cheating Lab is back open
if I was looking to scrap a whole team's leadership and swap, I'm starting with someone from the Guardians for pitching, Dodgers for hitting/structure, and Brewers for Catching. Figure out leadership there and you can literally build management around them, including their bosses
Very interesting stuff to listen to. Not sure why it popped up on my recos, but now subbed (not that you need more subs), great content. Appreciate this stuff.
I'm less interested in the how and the where and more interested in the WHO? This would have to be someone affiliated with the brewer for well over 10 years, assisting with Lucroy's development. As you may suspect, not many people predate manager Craig Counsell but I did find one man, one former *CATCHER* who has been with the org since his playing days in the minors starting way back in 2002!: Nestor Corredor. In 2016-2018, Nestor Corredor managed the rookie-level Helena Brewers. From his time there, only 3 hitters have made the majors. Two of them being Nestor's starting catchers Cooper Hummel and Payton Henry. Of Henry, Fangraphs said this last year: "A bat-first high school catcher who was considered a long shot to stay behind the plate, Henry has made sufficient developmental progress as a defender and now projects to stay back there." HMMM. Seems like perhaps the Brewers sent guys with poor defensive catching ability. Starting in 2021 Corredor became the bullpen catcher for the Brewers, you know, when Narvaez jumped into the elite tier. This year you can find him listed at the bottom of the Brewers official coaching staff page as 'coach'. As if they didn't want him to even bullpen catch but just focus on working with William Contreras every waking hour. I rest my case and I hope you find it compelling.
Googlemaps says that that building is home to a pediatrician's office. A little TOO convenient that it's a doctor's office, known for working with LABS 👀
As an Astros fan watching JT Realmuto catch fucking everything that got within 10 feet of him during the 22 WS was a treat, reminded me of the Brad Ausmus days. Everyone says Maldanado is "a wall", and maybe he was at one point in his career but he sucks now, it's no surprise he's not top 10 in blocks above average.
As a Brewers fan this is gold 😂😂 and SPOT ON. I remember Lucroy coming up and actually going to some of his high A games he was horrid behind the plate… What we do is a wonder of the world
The Angels also have a catching lab. Unfortunately they can't stop them from getting injured. However Stassi and O'Hoppe's replacements in Wallach and Thaiss are still very good. Too bad we still poverty
Awesome stuff. I would love to see Yasmani who gave up a ton of passed balls with LA and then had no noticible issues while he mashed with the Brewers. I saw he was on the worst defensive catchers list at the end with the White Sox haha
Next: Braves Pitching Lab. I’d love to know why Domingo Robles is all of a sudden amazing now that he’s with the braves. Honestly just waiting for another stat line scouting.
Great video! The Braves does not know how to increase defensive skills on a catcher. The Brewers are the best in the game in that realm. In the 3 teams trade Oakland got the worst part. Braves second, Brewers won the trade because of the catching coach making miracles.
Mj melendez has improved on defense this year but very small sanple size if the brewers offered robert gasser i would take it picked him because that name is amazing

At least Esteury Ruiz has 11 stolen bases
They have Langeliers and Soderstrom anyway, and they got a good haul
It makes sense in terms of ownership wanting to tank to get out of town. Criminal stuff
how did the brewers even get contreras out of that though
by having the fortune of the Athletics valuing Ruiz significantly more than it seems like the general public/market did, and the Braves not having a piece Oakland valued as much, forcing Atlanta to run the trade through Milwaukee
I like to think the Brewers hold all their catchers family hostage and every time they drop a passed ball they kill one of them
Am Brewers official. Can confirm.
😂😂😂😂
“You didn’t frame that, there goes your cousins fingers”
If only the Brewers could develop hitting this well
