Dude, where are all your subscribers and views? This is some of the best, most creative baseball content I've seen on YT. A pickoff is, generally, a mundane event but you somehow make it extremely interesting. Keep up the good work.
Kershaw and Carlton both pitched from the stretch. Kershaw was slide stepping and Carlton was leg kicking
fax i was so confused when he said that carlton wasn't going from the stretch
Honestly one of the best Channels I’ve seen, great Content up and down you definitely deserve a much bigger fan base, keep up the grind and keep making great content it’s fucking amazing
Love these videos, keep putting these out and you’ll be at 10k in no time man
Cool and awesome analysis of Plesac’s pickoff! Too bad he got picked off the team lol. You need more subs!
Just saw you on SRS! Fantastic video, you gained a new sub! Can’t wait to binge-watch all of your videos!
Carlton was pitching from the stretch 100%... One key indicator is if he was pitching from the windup and not the stretch, a pickoff to any base would be a considered a balk. He would have to clearly step off to throw to any base.
You can pitch "out of the stretch" without anyone on base, and then pick off normally and it wont be a balk. Not everyone has a windup. Some pitchers just pitch like they are in the stretch always
keep it up bruh you’re gonna blow up guaranteed
*Ready for another banger*
in that clip, carlton was most definitely pitching from the stretch
SportStorm kershaw’s move was definitely quicker, but from what I learned, windup versus stretch was always 2 feet on mound facing the batter directly being the windup and one foot on the mound being the stretch. imo both carlton and kershaw were pitching from the stretch, but i will say kershaw’s pickoff move was much quicker. lmk what you agree/disagree with about my take, would love to know. and keep up the solid content
Noah Jensen that definitely makes sense since they both have different windups
@@SportStorm23 @Noah Jensen I say you both are right. The stretch is also called the set, but every calls it the stretch. I knew you had to come to set but didn't know it was also called that. Kershaw used a slide step while fisk didn't. That's the only difference besides pitching motions
SportStorm definitely both stretch. Kershaw is just doing a slide step not a full leg kick
Check out Carson Fulmer’s pickoff vs Tennessee. Subtle art of picking up the heal of your front foot just before you step off. Too quick for the umpires to see, but still gives the runner the illusion you’re going to home.
In the clip used, Carlton balked and the runner got back safely. Umps screwed up twice.
Carlton and Kershaw were both pitching from the stretch... little different style of delivery, but still the stretch.
Max Fried has a gnarly pickoff move. He gets multiple guys every year. I believe he had 6 in 2019. Fun video!
Can you do one on Terry Mulholland? He had one of the greatest pickup moves of any lefties I ever saw.
I can still remember watching Andy Pettite fool guys on first with his pick off move. Good times
One thing that helps a pitcher's pick off is the fielder catching the ball as close to the runner as possible. I'm a crappy amateur but I've played gobs of 1B. When the throw was good I tried to have my glove touching the runner or within a few inches when I caught to the ball that way I don't waste time swiping back towards the runner.
Carlton's move was from the stretch. Kershaw's move is more of a slide step which is where the confusion is. Great vid tho
Zach Plesac and the art of getting kicked from your team
And in the slow mo, the runner was safe. Close play for sure, but ironically shouldn't have been one of his 145 pickoffs lol. Awesome vid though! Lefty pickoff moves would give me fits as a runner
keep it up
There was a player I played with once that would intentionally let players on just to pick them off. We were only 9 at the time but still cool
Most successful pick off attempts are setup on pitches to home plate. For instance if I do the same exact thing at the same time three pitches in a row with a runner on first the runner can kinda get lulled to sleep, then the fourth time I do it all the same and change just enough to legally attempt the pickoff it has a higher chance of success
Carlton also has the career record for balks
In the first pickoff clip by Carlton, you can see the umpire knew he was coming over. You can see him getting into position to watch the play.
Any time I see a video about pickoffs I have to advocate for a rule change I think would both speed up the game and improve the base stealing part of the game. They say nothing slows a game down like speed and I think I have the solution. Allow the pitcher one 'free' throw over to the bag to check on a runner per batter. After they make that first throw they get charged with a ball unless they actually pick the runner off.
What does this do? Well, first it makes them less likely to throw over, giving the runner maybe an extra half a step lead, which leads to more actual steal attempts. Second, it reduces the number of throws over to first, which are boring. Third, it adds a little strategy layer. 0-2 count the runner has to be really, really careful; 3-1 count the pitcher has to be really careful because if he throws over and doesn't pick off the runner he just gave first base to the guy at the plate, but because the batter doesn't get a ball if they pick the guy off on the throw. It could also make for some really great run down situations. Pitcher falls behind 3-1 and the runner takes a bit bigger lead. Pitcher thinks he can get him so he throws over, but with that extra half step the runner realizes he's not getting back to first so he takes off for second. Now, instead of just his own fate in his hands if he can get out of it- get back to first or get to second- the batter gets the walk (maybe score it as 'reached first on a balk' to make it more consistent with other scoring decisions.)
Fewer throws over to first, but the ones that are made have higher stakes. Even the first throw over has some stakes because now the runner can get a bigger lead. The runner still has to stay awake and manage their lead though. Better chance for steals. In the era of the automatic intentional walk it's not like we don't already have a mechanic for a runner to reach first on something other than a pitch. If you want a game logic reason for it... it's only a pick off throw if you get the guy. If you don't you threw the ball to first instead of home, which is about far out of the strike zone as you can get.
The runner is safe when in slow-mo for carltons clip
Another reason why he is probably so good at picking off is because he kind of moves his left foot just enough so it makes the runner think that he is throwing to home and not to first. The slight movement comes right before his right foot moves to pick so the umpire doesn’t notice it
RA Dickey had a crazy 2B pickoff move
Plesac looks like he may be doing a “balk move” which is when a righty pitcher lifts his front foot heel slightly to give the impression that he is pitching the ball, but then after slightly picking his heel up he will pick. While this is technically a balk, it almost never gets called.
Pickoffs still happen all the time in high school, so maybe the pickoff will make a comeback.
The higher the skill level the less and less prevalent pick offs and other rare occurrences drop off the higher the skill level goes (i.e. h.s./college/minors/majors) pick offs will always happen but i dont see any kinda of renaissance happening because of how detailed the game is nowadays. The only guys that are aggressive on the base paths are the fastest guys. Seems like the less speed a guy has below top notch speed, dont try to be overly aggressive and managers arent risking base runners with trying to steal unless they got a guy who can do it consistently. The focus on getting on base and not risking baserunners will contribute to pick offs never picking back up. It is one of the plays i find most exciting
What are those Royals and Indians uniforms?
It seems like its his small base, he keeps he feet close together so he can launch his body to the base sooner than other guys with a wider base.
I'm surprised no mention of Teheran on these lists. I know he led the NL a couple times.
Carlton isn't just by far the all time leader in pickoffs but also in balks
It's because his last name in Serbian means Dancer so it only makes sense that he's got quick feet
Do Jon Lester
Meanwhile, I've just noticed Ronald Acuna having gotten picked off twice in like two days now 😖
Nathan Eovaldi is good at this as well
You lost me at "Carlton didn't pitch from the stretch". Great pitcher though.
His uncle is Dan Plesac
RIP to plesac 😂
Carlton's move looks illegal. From that angle, it looks like his kicking foot crosses his other leg, which is also a balk. That rule might not have been in play at the time though
imagine if he was a lefty
Pettitte retired with 100
Do not do what Carleton does with his head as a left hander. Or at least don’t do it every time. When you do it every time this is called a stupid lefty. Also you can not pick off to a base like Carleton does unless you are in the stretch.
No offense but it feels like dude doesn't know a whole lot about baseball. I'd be happy to help.
I know what you mean... But I still like the content even if I’m correcting him in my mind half of the time. Hahaha 🤣
More bad umpires😂
This information is nonsense. Another guy who does not know how to pitch spreading misinformation. BOOOO!
Kershaw and Carlton both pitched from the stretch. Kershaw was slide stepping and Carlton was leg kicking
He's really safe on that play. That would have been reviewed in todays game.
Ghostdialoog yeah I noticed that too
@@SportStorm23 Wich kinda makes it a bad pickoff move. The baserunner noticed and was back in time. Its still pretty slick and the guy probably deserves respect, but he fooled alot of umps if that clip is anything to go by.
Yeah I was scrolling to see if someone caught that lol
