Too bad he sucks so much at bat. Best «strike stealer» in the game, arguably the best defensive catcher.

i was talking with a current D1 Catcher and he said he’ll prolly get drafted after his junior year but the only reason he didn’t get drafted out of high school is because of his hitting and i mean the dudes a beast behind the plate throwing 90 from home to second with a 1.91 pop time and what he said was true his swing is like butter but it’s just hard to hit 90s and it makes sense

All a catcher needs to know about a pitcher is What Pitches the pitcher Throws. He has to know that. AND a catcher has to know the signals. The catcher by his signals informs the pitcher what pitch the catcher is expecting the pitcher will throw next. Should the pitcher shake off a catcher, the pitcher is telling the catcher that the catcher has guessed wrong and should make another guess. Catchers do not call pitches. Managers do not call pitches. Scouting reports and analytics do not call pitches. Pitchers call pitches because pitchers are the only players in the proper position to see what the batter is intending to do with the next pitch.

At 00:47 these guys look like a bunch of 2-year olds after a jail-break from their play pen. At 00:54 Hedges tells you that scouting reports (which are based on analytics) provide insufficient information to properly pitch. At 01:00 Smoltz tells the catcher how important it is to the pitcher that the catcher should give him a good early target. He implies that the catcher hiding the target is more advantageous to a batter than to a pitcher. At 01:28, there are 2 names for a curve-ball thrown over the plate for a strike: hanging curve-ball and gopher-ball. At 01:42 he says he needs to remind a pitcher how to throw a curve-ball. How stupid are these guys? At 02:51 it seems that "pitch framing " means trying to fool the umpire. It appears that catch asserts the umpires really are that bad. What Smoltz fails to mention is that a player with a third-grade education and an IQ of 80 is smart enough to be a catcher.

karamazovkid JT Realmuto is nowhere near where Austin Hedges is now at defense for catcher of course and pitch framing and calling the game, handling a pitching staff

karamazovkid You have no idea what you’re talking about. Seems to me you’re the one with an IQ of 80, and there’s not a coach in the world who would trust you behind the plate.

A catcher has the whole field view. He can see where infield/outfield is position and can use his stats (if he chooses) to aid in determining the type of pitch a pitcher should throw. A catcher is highly involved in a game and can also help the pitcher decide what to throw due to that. At the end of the day theyre not going to argue in the middle of the game, so if a pitcher doesnt feel the pitch signal is the correct one for the time of the game, batter, feel comfortable throwing that type, etc. then of course he can nod and move to the next pitch. But a catcher DOES HELP in calling pitches

karamazovkid this is literally the stupidest take on catching ive ever seen. You do not deserve an opinion on the topic and may God have mercy on your poor little soul.
